FJORD
Yule Tides
ON HOOD CANAL & SOUTH PUGET SOUND
Rachel Hansen | Tracing the Fjord editor
Twice daily the Salish tides sweep through the inlets and bays of South Puget Sound and Hood Canal. Whitecaps march across the fjord as whales, seals, shorebirds, and otters chase the runs of salmon returning home to their swollen rivers after long journeys. Winter is here and it is my favorite time to be on the fjord. Summer crowds have abandoned bare feet and beach fires for soccer schedules and pumpkin lattes. The lingering August smoke has been replaced with a sparkling freshness that is matched in brilliance only by the early snow on the Olympic Mountains. If you are lucky, you will find yourself in a sturdy cabin with a warm fire and a courtside seat on nature – wind buffeting fragrant cedar and Douglas fir bows and rain drumming a mesmerizing jig to the manic dance of the waves. Mornings bring air crisp with the scent of sea and forest. There isn’t a dull moment in this lush wonderland packed with wildly varied flora and fauna and bursting at the
seams with adventure. Fjord spirit abounds from the solitude of your beach cabin to the festivities of Holiday Magic. Winter is a time to reflect and slow down to enjoy the simple pleasures that fill our lives. In this Fjord we celebrate that spirit and embrace the holiday bounty of our communities clinging to its shores. Take the time for a wilderness walk. Enjoy the whales that seem to linger like us in our waterways. Drink deep the scent of the evergreens as we gather bunches for our homes. Savor the smell of the Pacific Northwest rain and wind.
FJORD FACTS Fjords are found where glaciation extends below current sea level. A fjord is formed when a glacier retreats, carving a U-shaped valley that the sea fills. Formed over13,000 years ago, Hood Canal is not a canal, as defined by Captain George Vancouver when he "discovered" it in 1792, but in fact the only fjord in the lower 48 states. There are plenty of fjords in Canada and Alaska. Averaging 150' deep, Hood Fjord is as deep as 600' in areas on the bottom are covered by glacial sill.
In this issue we welome Craig Romano, an author of more than twenty hiking guidebooks including the bestselling Day Hiking Olympic Peninsula 2nd Edition, as a regular columnist of the Fjord. Craig will be featuring hiking opportunities around the area in future issues. Thanks!
From the Fjord Magazine, we wish you a happy and joyous holiday season filled with laughter, love and fantastic stories!

This year I can't help but just go right out and say it. For weeks I've immersed
myself in "Christmastown USA" research; hunting for tree farms; and, along with my patient family – even built a 32' Santa Claus replica of the Shelton Kringle designed by Clarence Beauchamp in 1962. that eye twinkle just right – I hope to be forgiven for early holiday wishes. We're calling it Fjord Spirit and we hope your family gets on board too as there are so many amazing celebrations over the next month; organized by dedicated volunteers – who, like me this year, started chasing the yule tides early this year – let's honor their commitment by embracing the #FJORDSPIRIT! Fjord spirit gets into full swing Thanksgiving weekend with Alderbrook Resort and Spa's annual tree lighting ceremony heralding the beginning of the season. Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrive by boat amidst bonfires, carols, and glowing children. The finale includes a spectacular fireworks display. The Festival continues in the town of Belfair at the tip of the fjord. In December the town comes together to celebrate local military heroes with Santa appearances and a Christmas Parade. In Hoodsport the Hardware Distillery is partnering with local chefs in December to host delicious Holiday Distillery Dinners and caroling events. On both Hood Canal and South Puget Sound plan to partake in a lighted boat parade – December 14 -15 the Shelton Yacht Club organizes their tour down Hammersley Inlet; December 15 the Lady Alderbrook leads a lighted parade from Union. On board the Great Bend Choir will be performing Christmas classics

that will be transmitted by FM receiver to organized events on shore. These ticketed events include a bonfire celebration at the Union City Market and Hood Canal Marina as well as dinner event at the beach organized by Hood Canal Events. Check out explorehoodcanal.com for a complete list of events. Head to Shelton on December 7-8 for Holiday Magic. This annual event, hosted by the Downtown Merchants and the Kristmas Town Kiwanis, includes tree lighting and carol singing. When Santa arrives the block party really gets going! Marshmallow roasting bonfires in the street, train rides, shopping, and more. Saturday head over to the 32' Santa at Toziers for a Christmas Party before the Santa Claus Parade on Railroad at 5:00 PM. Custom floats, marching bands, antique cars, and of course, the Claus family, make for a great holiday celebration. Visit page 23 for more information on this event. Start a new family tradition and enjoy a holiday Cocoa Cruise with Santa aboard the Lady Alderbrook! Your kids will love the stories, cookies and cocoa with Santa, weekends until Christmas. Space is limited to 30 guests, $15 children under 12 / $20 seniors / $25 adults. Contact Alderbrook Resort and Spa at (360) 898-2200 for more information.

Also stop by Alderbrook Resort and Spa Capture the spirit of the season by taking your Selfies with Santa in the Lobby every weekend until 12/23, 11:00 AM -12:30 PM. This is open to both hotel guests and community members. Recently a reader requested that I profile Port Gamble for the Fjord. This lovingly restored village is the quintessential Christmas town. Great gift shops with onsite crafters and weavers, and even a shell museum that is a surprising delight on the mezzanine of the old general store. Like Alderbrook in Union, they too have their own holiday fireworks show – this one on December 8. I highly recommend a visit. In fact, if anything sticks out about the holiday happenings around Hood Canal is the amount of love and dedication that is put into each holiday event. In Seabeck an entire day is spent recreating a turn of the century Christmas. In the next few pages you will get a taste of just how diverse and wonderful the holiday events are – from caroling and intimate dinner and music events to visits with Santa – it will be hard not to fall in love with our #fjordspirit. 4

Xinh's Northwest Oyster Stuffing
If you are familiar with Xinh Dwelley's cooking than you can attest to her culinary genius. However, since she retired from her restaurant in Shelton we've all been experiencing some pangs of withdrawal. We caught up with her recently to share some oysters and eggrolls. Below is a oyster stuffing recipe to make your holiday dinner a little tastier. Xinh Dwelley was raised on a rice farm in Vietnam. Her first job was dishwashing, subsequently transitioning to cooking in an American mess hall. By her 15th birthday she was gaining recognition for her fried chicken and hamburgers. “The officers club loved my cooking,” she says. Along with the sense of flavors learned at her mother’s side – like learning to walk or breathe – Xinh just understood food. Xinh married an American soldier and – fortunately for us – he brought her to Olympia. She took a job shucking for Ellison Oyster, now Taylor Shellfish. She was good. And each year was better. In 1989 her first place speed at the West Coast Shucking Championship was 3:08 – taking her on to win the National Championship. In 1992, with five first place wins – each faster than the previous year–she decided to retire from competing. When her employer, Taylor’s, asked her to prepare an authentic Vietnamese meal, she accepted the challenge. It wasn’t the typical mess food she was
used to and she wasn’t a trained chef –but Xinh has a good memory. “I make curry sauces from memory,” she says, “Our rice farm was in a tidal swamp; we had a lot of fish. That’s what my mother cooked.” Needless to say, her meal was a great hit and her duties transformed.
"Xinh’s flavors are so intuitive they showcase each ingredient – but never distract from the dish." Recently we had the honor of Xinh Dwelley cooking in our kitchen for an event hosted at our shellfish farm. Cooking alongside Xinh is like watching a talented confident artist at work. My children took to her instantly and were enlisted as her sous chefs, scurrying around the hum of the kitchen like well mannered bees basking in her lively warm personality. Xinh gently taught Luke how to fold wontons and patiently brushed off crooked pinches. When my fridge lacked an essential dressing she just shrugged, “we’ll make do.”

Her grace not only made it an enjoyable experience – we also had a fantastic feast! Don’t take my word for it. Her restaurant walls were festooned with countless ribbons and plaques of the many honors her dishes earned. These were interspersed with the images of her with famous people: Julia Child, Anthony Bourdain and Dirty Job’s Mike Rowe to name just a few. Xinh speaks fondly of her friendships with each. Despite all the accolades she remains humble and genuine – enjoying a hot dog when she isn’t making divine seafood fusions for her adoring fans. Her restaurant may be closed but Xinh Dwelley is constantly "giving back" – donating countless hours and dishes to community events. October, her geoduck chowder and mussel curry were popular food choices at OysterFest. In December, catch up with Xinh at the holiday celebration December 8 to support the 2018 Christmastown Santa project in downtown Shelton. Stop by give her Christmas wishes at the 32' Santa! Until then, enjoy this oyster recipe!

In the wake of Hood Canal’s timber boom it was discovered that the glacial till left after the fjord was carved was ideal ground for growing Douglas fir Christmas trees. During the 1950s and 1960s, the area annually harvested several million, earning it the title as “Christmas Tree Capital of the Nation.” During the Christmas tree boom, every available hand was cutting trees and filling rail cars for worldwide deliveries. Entire container ships were filled with Mason County trees.

Local u-cut and pre-cut farms around Hood Canal continue to “Keep it Real” by producing some of the finest Nobles, Grands, Frasers as well as Douglas Firs. Northwest growers claim that real trees help the environment and are recyclable and biodegradable while artificial trees reportedly have a lifespan of 5 years and will eventually end up in a landfill - forever! Annually many families head to local farms to select their favorite and enjoy holiday activities like hayrides, petting zoos and visits with Santa. There’s hardly anything that’s more quintessentially Christmas than decorating a handpicked Pacific Northwest Christmas tree and gathering your family around a tree that you brought home together from Hood Canal.

D U C K A BU S H RIVER TRAIL Craig Romano | author Day Hiking Olympic Peninsula 2nd Edition
HIKES
The Duckabush River starts in the heart of the Olympic Mountains.
Fed by glaciers, snowfields, and a myriad of springs and alpine lakes; this major Olympic Peninsula river provides excellent wildlife habitat and makes for some stunning scenery. Explore this valley in the winter for the added bonus of solitude, a chance to observe elk, and to witness a rain-swollen river careening through clefts and over boulders.
Hit the Trail
The Duckabush River Trail is a portal into the wild interior of the Olympic Peninsula. A well-maintained trail travels along a good portion of the waterway allowing you to experience its grandeur. The trail travels a verdant valley for more than 20 miles terminating at Marmot Lake in the heart of Olympic National Park. That’s a long journey primarily reserved for multi-day backpackers who often continue farther from there to cross historic O’Neil Pass. Day hikers however will be content to head up this trail for just a few miles. An objective for many hikers and one that includes a good day’s worth of mileage and a little climbing too is to an imposing riverside knoll known as the Big Hump.
If the 7.8 mile distance and more than 1400 feet of elevation gain to reach this destination is too much, a satisfying turnaround spot is a nice stretch of river just prior to the climb. The Duckabush River Trail like many of the trails leading along rivers into the Olympic interior begins as an old roadbed. Park officials, foresters and others once sought to punch roads deeper into the Olympics. However, over time, changing attitudes that emphasized preservation of

areas free of roads and dwindling budgets that couldn’t maintain many miles of backcountry byways led to miles of roadway being converted to trails. In almost all of these cases this has meant miles of gentle hiking as the old roadways were often well graded. That is the case for the beginning of this trail. Head off down the trail gently climbing through a uniform forest of second-growth fir. This part of the Duckabush River valley was logged—but it was many decades ago. The real old and impressive trees are yet to come. At 1.2 miles the trail enters The Brothers Wilderness, a 16,000-plus acre federally protected section of the Olympic National Forest. Wilderness designation means that this rugged and ecologically important tract of land bordering the national park will never be logged, developed or have a road traverse it. Bicycles and machinery are not permitted either, allowing folks who come to explore this area by foot or horseback a true wilderness experience. The trail continues through a low gap near Little Hump and then begins a descent of 250 feet, following an old logging railroad grade on an almost perfectly level trajectory. Loggers here didn’t take all of the big timber as a few standing giants attest.

Roosevelt Elk Cervus elaphus roosevelti
In 1907 Olympic National Park was established to protect the Roosevelt Elk populations. The herds of elk had been drastically reduced due to over hunting and deforestation. In fact, the first proposed name for the park was "Elk Park." Thankfully, the name was changed, and the elk herds rejuvenated over the years. Now the elk are a story of triumph, as the Olympic National Park is home to the largest unmanaged herd of Roosevelt Elk with a population of 5,000 individuals. Their range extends along the western slopes of the Coastal and Cascade Ranges from Northern California up to Southern British Columbia. There are several populations on Vancouver Island and they were successfully introduced in 1928 to Afognak and Raspberry Island off the coast of Alaska. Roosevelt elk are crepuscular –they prefer to be active in the early morning and at twilight– so the best time to go looking

A winter visit to the lowlands along Hood Canal is often rewarded with sightings of some spectacular creatures – the Olympic elk herds. These pictures were taken in a recent visit to Brinnon – where they routinely roam the town core.
for them is closer to dawn or dusk. As the winter weather sets in and temperatures fall, the elk come down from the mountains to the milder, coastal climate. Since it is richer in greens and safe from predators they frequent open fields and enjoy salt marshes. The elk visit Brinnon to partake in the salt of the tidal flats. When viewing wildlife always keep your distance and take care of these large and unpredictable wild animals. They are dangerous during the fall rut (September – November) and calving season (May – June). However, the fall rut is a great time to watch elk, as the bulls (males) are so caught up with attracting the cows (females) that they are less cautious and more visible. This is also the time of year when elk are more vocal as bulls bugle call their mates.
This April 1956 cartoon from the Simpson Lookout tells the story of a bull elk that took on a pick up and a road grader. The loggers escaped when an attractive elk cow "suddenly appeared." At a little over 3 miles come to a ledge with a spectacular view east down the river valley. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Cascades. To the south, impressive St. Peters Dome hovers—often catching swirling low clouds. Return to this spot later in the spring and you’ll have an array of wildflowers enhancing the views. Keep hiking and come to another outcropping before finally cresting 1700-foot Big Hump at 3.9 miles. For most day hikers, this is far enough. But if you still feel like hiking, continue through a mosaic of old growth and fire scorched trees and descend 600 feet back to the river. Here at 5.3 miles from the trailhead is a camping area near a series of impressive rapids. During periods of heavy rain the river can be deafening here. Watch for darting dippers in the rapids as you rest up for your return to your start. And if you are a strong hiker or are out on a several day backpacking adventure, the trail generally remains snow-free through the winter for many more miles. Note that at 6.7 miles from the trailhead it enters the national park—meaning dogs are not allowed to continue—and if you are planning on camping, you’ll need to secure a backcountry permit beforehand.

Santa Claus is
BACK IN TOWN
Christmas has always been important to the timber town of Shelton. Located less than ten miles from Hood Canal on Hammersley Inlet, Shelton is serious about their
Christmas tree roots. In 1962, to celebrate the Seattle World Fair, the town commissioned the retired Simpson Lumber shop artist, Clarence Beauchamp to build a three story Santa Claus to wave at visitors all year long. The 32' Santa Claus was one of Beauchamp's many contributions to the community's history. In his years with Simpson, and retirement, he left a legacy of creative projects that showcased his gentle humor and sensitivity for spreading joy with his talents. A humble man, Clarence Beauchamp arrived in Shelton in 1947 to begin his job with Simpson as the shop painter. Tasks included painting caution signs, forestry signs and promoting safety in the camps. Beauchamp, or "Beau" as he was known by his friends, often volunteered to ply his pen, brush or chisel to a multitude of local projects including a totem pole with interchangeable heads rank-
ing each camp's safety record; the Simpson Clown troupe that traveled to parades throughout Washington (returning with multiple awards); as well as jaw dropping scale and ingenuity on the Forest Festival sets and floats. Most recognizable for Shelton residents is Beauchamp's log monument on Hwy 3 as you enter Shelton. He prepped and carved the 10 foot log end in the Simpson Shop. It was dedicated in May, 1953, as Mason County celebrated its 100th anniversary of logging . It still stand at Lookout Park, having been recently restored through a partnership with Kristmas Town Kiwanis and the City of Shelton.
The original Santa stands at Hunter Farms where he greets customers. The doll face "hole" is still visible.

"With the (Simpson) Company's permission," wrote friend and historian David James, "he turned the shop into a creative studio which bloomed with the giant figures of Paul Bunyan, cutouts of oxen, and tributes to citizens who rode in the Paul Bunyan Parade." James adds, "Beau the sign painter, was also a carver of wood, a cartoonist, a maker of displays, and even a poet. He was a warm, likeable man who worked with enthusiasm on all his assignments." James donated several of Beauchamp's pieces to the Mason County Historical Society where they are available for viewing on Railroad Avenue.
Shelton Santa Claus
At the age of 66, Beauchamp designed and built the 32' Santa Claus to commemorate Shelton's Christmastown, U.S.A during the 1962 Century 21 Seattle's World Fair. Built in four 16' panels and mounted on poles donated by the PUD #3, the giant structure required the help of multiple crews and boom trucks to erect on the corner of Railroad Avenue and First Street in downtown Shelron. The plan, according to a 1962 Mason County Journal article, was to give a "vivid message," to tourists passing though, "that Shelton is 'Christmastown, USA' when this eye-popping plywood Santa Claus rivets their attention." The Santa included a giant bag of Mason County products complete with oysters, lumber and a giant doll that featured a small hinged window that could be opened from the back so that children could peer through and be photographed in the bag with a doll body.

and plywood chipping, he was destined for the County dump. The Hunter family, loyal supporters of the Christmastown heritage and holding strong to Christmas tree traditions on their farm in Union, rallied friends to provide trucks to transport Santa's pieces to their barn for safe keeping. To this day Beauchamp's Santa leans his weight against Hunter's barn – standing tall after 56 years of wind, rain and sun – greeting the thousands of families that visit the farm for pumpkins in October and greenery and trees at the holidays.
In the late 1960's, citing degrading paint and the surrounding trees partially blocking his view, the Santa was moved from his orginal location to be stored in the City Garage until December 1970 when the Shelton Chamber of Commerce led efforts to restore him to public view. With the help of painters from the Washington Corrections Center, under the direction of Bill Gregory, the Santa was revived and reassembled on Highway 3 in the site that is now Tupper Flooring (next to the fomer Burger Pit) so that he could greet visitors as they arrived in the area from Highway 101. The site was provided by Elmer Leboki with the cooperation of the Douglas Fir Christmas Tree Co. The restoration was estimated to take over 160 man hours. In 1983 Santa Claus was once again restored to Railroad Avenue. This time he was placed in Post Office Park where he remained over 15 years when, paint peeling
A Santa Revival
As a part of this year’s Festival of the Fjord, a 32’ Santa will once again be smiling down on Shelton for the holiday season. In November, volunteers artists and local businesses came together to build a replica of the 1962 design created by Clarence Beauchamp, complete with a door in the doll’s face that children can peer through. Over the decades Beauchamp's design had been unsympathetically edited with layers of paint. Considering the weathering of the orginial plywood it was feared that more damage would be done if the piece was moved from its present attachments. Keeping as close to Beauchamp's design as possible, artist Wayne Wenstob created scale replica drawings using archival photographs as well as a 1962 color Ziegler postcard of Santa in combination with measurements and detailed photos of the current Santa Claus. The replica drawings were projected on the 32' X 16' plywood "canvas" for tracing.
1970 photo of Santa going up 22 Shelton Mason County Journal Image FJORD 22
The standard 8' X 4' plywood sections provided a grid for the projection lines. Each piece was cut with a keyhole locking system along the bottom of the section to provide a tight and secure fit with no exterior hardware. Clarence Beauchamp died in 1989 at the age of 92. This project honors his memory as well as that of Christmastown U.S.A. – a magical legacy that runs deep with so many families in the Shelton area. Grandmothers and mothers who remember placing their own faces in the doll will now be able to use their smart-phones to recreate the image of their daughters and granddaughters!

WINTER Birdwatching on the Fjord
BIRDS
With its wealth of shoreline, fresh- and saltwater marshes, mudflats, and of course the bountiful forest, the fjord is a birders’ paradise. And whereas winter and spring aren’t the most popular seasons for human tourists (meaning less competition for lodging and dining!), they happen to be the best for catching the avian crowds. From soaring birds of prey to elusive divers, birdwatching is one more reason to head to the Canal. The Audubon Society’s Great Washington State Birding Trail is a great resource, check out wa.audubon.org. Below we've included two birding areas to get you started! Twanoh State Park is a favorite in the summer for swimming and watersports, but the quieter winter and spring months make it a great place for viewing wildlife and birds. Bring your binoculars to the shoreline for an eyeful of diving birds such as loons, mergansers, murrelets, and ruddy ducks with their distinctive upright tails. In the towering cedars and maples inland, listen for brown creepers and red crossbills.
DEC 15
YULE TIDES
ON THE GREAT BEND
Potlatch State Park Like Twanoh, Potlatch bustles with humans in the summer and birds in the winter and spring. With 5,700 feet of saltwater shoreline, it’s a great place for viewing waterfowl, particularly during high tide. In the water, look for heron, scoters and scaups, and check the trees for fox sparrows and Steller’s jays.
Alderbrook Resort & Spa is a fantastic place to immerse in #fjordspirit. Beautifully decorated and featuring entertainment and seasonally inspired menus, whether its an overnight stay or a dinner out – there's more than great views of the canal. On December weekends schedule a family Cocoa Cruise with Santa! On December 15, enjoy the Great Bend Holiday Lights Caroling Cruise on the Lady Alderbrook. greatbend.org FJORD

Theler Wetlands Nature Preserve offer spectacular Birding opportunities Looking for a refreshing easy local walk with plenty of birds and wildlife? Consider visiting the very accessible Theler Wetlands near the south entrance to Belfair, WA. Interpretative signs, native plants, and even a reconstructed whale skeleton – makes this an inspiring walk.
Rebuilt whale skeleton on display at Theler
“Spring and fall, listen for Golden-crowned Kinglets; Bewick’s, Marsh, and Winter Wrens. Birds of prey “prowl” the air: Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Red-Tailed Hawks, Shorteared Owls. Winter brings Northern Shrikes to meadows. Features include dabblers: Northern Pintails, American Wigeons, Green-winged Teals; and divers: Ruddy Ducks, Horned Grebes, Common Mergansers, Common Goldeneyes.” Excerpt from The Great Washington State Birding Trail map – Olympic Loop, Site #54 View at wa.audubon.org or purchase a hardcover copy online.
Kassidy Kadoun | Story and images
Located at the head of Hood Canal the Theler Wetlands offers several accessible walking trails within a protected salt marsh and estuary wetlands. The Theler Wetlands of Belfair include a gorgeous salt water estuary. The wetlands are accessible through many miles of level trails and boardwalks, surrounded by roses, shrubs, and blackberries in bloom in the summer months. The trails amount to 3.5 miles round-trip, with the option of three different routes.
Theler #54 | Oly Loop
The Union River Estuary Trail is the longest trail offered. To the left of the trail is an old dike that travels through some of the tidal wetlands, and to the right is fresh water marshes filled with cattails and tall grasses. The viewing point from this perspective is spectacular! There are 360-degree views of the Union River, Hood Canal, and the Olympic Mountains.
Sam Theler, a real estate developer, deeded the wetlands to the North Mason School district in 1968 in honor of his wife. Families can give these trails a visit, and if they are open, displays and hands-on exhibits are available to examine. They help to teach more about the wetlands ecosystem. There are mounted animals with plaques of information on each, along with a gray whale skeleton for display. There is a picnic area and a restroom as well. Keep an eye out for the many birdhouses along each trail—they are hard to miss! Often spotted are red-winged blackbirds, kingfishers, herons, eagles, otters, and geese. These trails are perfect for people of all ages.

Salal can be kept in a cooler for up to three months – and still be FRESH.
Build A Wreath
SUPPLIES:
Shears or hedge clippers Florist wire, raffia or garden twine (if you want your piece to be completely compostable use raffia or string) Ribbon and/or ornaments (optional) Greenery – holly, cedar, and/or fir balanced with a red berry such as rose hips, red currant, hawthorn, mountain ash
TO DO:
Form a bunch of greenery and secure with florist wire or twine, take a section and then add another bunch, continue this until you have formed a garland approximately 4 feet long. Make big loop of this garland and twist it together to form a circle. Secure again with wire. Next add more greenery to fluff up your wreath. Then insert bunches of brightly coloured berries, twisting the branches into the wreath. If you like, add a bow or some such ornament.

Wrap Yourself in holiday tradition
Stella Wenstob, MA | Tracing the Fjord Contributor
With the falling leaves, shortening days and the chilly winds it is comforting to be in the Pacific Northwest surrounded by fragrant evergreens giving us hope for life in the dead of winter. Whether you buy local greens or gather your own it is easy to “bring home Christmas” as the medieval English phrase used to say. Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menzi), Noble Fir (Abies procera) and Salal (Gaultheria shallon) lend a cozy texture, while the jewel toned berries of Holly (Ilex aquifolium), Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris), Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), Cascara (Rhamnus purshiana), Wild Rose (Rosa acicularis) hips and Mountain Ash (Sorbus sitchensis) add a colorful contrast. Seasonal colors abound and evoke a Christmas-y feel to the world. Bringing in green for the midwinter is an ancient practice with pre-Christian roots amongst many cultures, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Celts and the pre-contact First Nations of the Pacific Northwest. The Greeks awarded wreaths made of laurels to the victors of the Olympic games and even today the laurel is engraved on the modern-day Olympic medals. Although the fragrant bay laurel has fallen out of favor as a seasonal decoration, the wreath is still a popular way to festoon winter festivals. Taken from the Old English word ‘writhen’ which means ‘to writhe’ or ‘to twist,’ the wreath is an elegant way to decorate your home for the holidays.
Contrastingly, a wreath hung at the door would welcome the Christmas Spirit into the house. The Christian faith graphically reinterprets the symbolism in the song the Holly & the Ivy, depicting Holly as the thorny crown that Jesus Christ wore and the berries as red as the blood of Christ. It is argued that the Ivy represents the Virgin Mary in this song as it is often associated with feminine symbolism. Ivy’s clinging nature has been used in a contradicting manner as both a symbol of humanity’s fallibility and also as a metaphor of the tenacity of Christ’s love. Interestingly, the tenacious nature of the holly and the ivy makes it difficult to eradicate from gardens and the wild and this is exactly why they are disparaged now as invasive plants. Both plants grow quickly and easily and are on Washington’s hit list of noxious weeds. Western Red Cedar with its strong, pliable, rot resistant wood was essential to life among the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest coast from Oregon right up into Alaska. Split cedar boards were used for house making and creating steamed water-tight boxes that were used for storage. The old growth giants are still felled for dugout canoe building. In the spring, the outer bark of the cedar is easily peeled in longitudinal strips which may be twisted into a strong, flexible rope. In olden times, clothing was also woven from this bark.
Although prickly and tricky to work with Holly is a traditional green for wreath making or swags. Holly enjoys a long history of superstitions and reinterpretations. Since ancient Celtic times, a sprig of holly has been a useful protective plant that kept away witches and evil spirits, as well as protecting the house from lightning.
33
33 FJORD
Since cedar lent itself to so many important uses, it was considered the Mother Tree for Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest and was important for many spiritual purposes such as cleansing ceremonies and potlatches. The aromatic Western Red Cedar was quickly adopted for garlands by early settlers and now its crisp, fresh smell forms an important part of seasonal greenery.
Decking the halls in the Pacific Northwest can be as simple as raiding your garden. However, if you lack the greenery, you can still enjoy the foraging-feel by obtaining a free personal collection permit from your local forest service office for collecting greens in the Olympic National Park.
Wreath Capital of the Nation
The Hood Canal area is reported to be the Nation’s leading producers of wreaths and cut greens. The brush picking industry alone is estimated at approximately $200 million – a larger producer than Mason County’s legendary recognition as the former leader in Christmas trees. The brush picking industry has been a part of the Pacific Northwest since the early twentieth century, with bales of greenery such as salal being shipped from Mason County to Seattle via steamboat and later train, but it took off in the late 1960s as a result of changing fertilization practices among the planted Christmas tree farms which promoted the growth of shrubs such as salal and huckleberry – prized plants in floral arrangements. These days businesses such as Lynch Creek Farms, Hiawatha Evergreens and Super Select Greens employ upwards of 1500 people who are responsible for harvesting greens and wreath making during the threemonth season leading up until Christmas. These locally made and harvested wares are shipped to flower markets across the globe. If you aren’t feeling the creative spirit or lack the time, pick up one of these locally made wreaths. Family owned Lynch Creek Floral offers many beautiful wreaths, swags or centerpieces. Each display is handcrafted in Shelton with sustainability harvested greenery.
Greener Greenery:
If you buy cut greens from a florist soak the boughs in a tub of water over night to saturate them, as cut greens can be kept for several weeks in coolers– they may not be as fresh as you think! Greenery, such as fir boughs, last longer in a cooler climate with lots of air circulation. Lightly spritzing your indoor and outdoor greenery with water is a good way to keep your greens hydrated and fresh-looking longer.

Workers assemble wreaths for shipment at the Super Select Greens yard. The scent from the cut greens is intoxicating and decidely "Christmas-y".

Winter recreation opportunities around the Fjord Ron Adams | Prostaff, Verle's LLC
The long and sunny days of summer have once again given way to the shorter, cooler and yes, sometimes wetter days of winter. Those who are fortunate enough to live near the Hood Canal embrace the new season in expectation of its accessible and delicious bounty mixed with family fun and adventure. Opportunities abound for those who are willing to bundle up and enjoy breathtaking scenery of pristine rivers and the snow capped peaks of the Olympic Mountains. The Hood Canal offers delicious oysters and several varieties of succulent clams ready for the taking on several State beaches. The winter months are known for the best months to harvest these delicious bivalves having their best flavor this time of year. Harvesting them can be a fun family adventure and deliciously satisfying. Fishing opportunities in the Hood Canal and surrounding lakes and rivers are as exciting as they are rewarding. The Hood Canal offers fishing for an extremely sought after fish known not only for its exceptional table fare, but also for its strong and exciting fight. Known as Blackmouth, these
local chinook or King salmon are challenging to catch but well worth the effort. Baked, fried or smoked blackmouth are hard to beat. There are several year round lakes around the Hood Canal as well and they are well stocked and offer excellent opportunity to catch nice rainbow trout that will occasionally weigh several pounds. Locals take advantage of this winter harvest either from the shore at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife access points or by boat. You have to be a little more patient in the winter but the palatable quality of the fish is better making them that much more delicious. There is also the opportunity to encounter a fish of almost legendary status that return to rivers near the Hood Canal in the winter and that is the winter run steelhead. Every
Smoked Salmon Cheese Ball 8 ounce brick of Cream Cheese 1/4 cup sour cream 1/8 teaspoon ground garlic 1/8 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 1/4 teaspoon lime juice 4 ounces smoked salmon-broken into small pieces 1/2 cup chopped smoked almonds Mix very well the first six ingredients then gently fold in the smoked salmon. Form the salmon mixture into a ball shape and roll in the chopped almonds, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours before serving.
Tips:
If your smoked salmon is mild in flavor you can add a drop or 2 of liquid smoke for a little more flavor. You can substitute other kinds of smoked fish will work well in place of the salmon. From Michelle’s Kitchen Courtesy of Verle's Sporting Goods, LLC FJORD 48

year these gigantic sea run rainbow trout emerge from the ocean and make their way up the rivers to return to their hatchery of origin or wildly spawn in the same river bed their life began in. They will test the will of even the most seasoned fisherman and fishing for them can almost become addicting. The table fare of these hatchery steel head is outstanding and they are just as delicious smoked. If trudging up and down a river bank in mid winter is not your cup of tea then maybe a comfortable and serene ride in a drift boat with a local guide to try your hand at landing a truly revered trophy fish would suit you, either way the opportunity is there. Just thinking about these wonderful and rewarding activities gets my pulse racing in anticipation. Local know how will be key to your success and there's no other place to get such good information and a great selection of the gear you will need than at Verles Sporting Goods in Shelton. Walt Harvey and I have been taking advantage of the wonderful winter bounty this area has to offer for a long time and we are eager to share our local knowledge with you to make you successful as well.
The invitation is open, the opportunities are here and we hope to see you soon so we can help you make some of your best memories (and meals) you will remember for a lifetime.
While at Verles check out our winter specials like the nice steelhead rod and reel combo by Abu Garcia or the Big Chief smoker and try some of the delicious Scotts Fish Brine to make your smoked trout, blackmouth or steelhead their best. Port Gamble
HISTORIC LOGGING TOWN Perched on the tip of the Kitsap Peninsula facing the mouth of the Hood Canal and the edge of Port Gamble Bay awaits one of Washington’s best-preserved, company lumber towns – Port Gamble. Featuring lovingly restored houses and buildings from the mid-nineteenth century, Port Gamble’s historic district has been a U.S. National Historic Landmark since 1966 and is a destination not to be missed. Just minutes from the Hood Canal Bridge, Port Gamble was established in 1853 for the Puget Sound Mill Company by Josiah Keller, William Talbot, and Andrew Pope. The site of Port Gamble was originally inhabited by members of the Nooksclime, Clallam, or S'Klallam Tribe who called the site Teekalet, "brightness of the noonday sun," for the way the water and sand reflected light on sunny days. This name was adopted by Talbot for the mill site. In exchange for free lumber, firewood, and Christmas gifts, Keller convinced the S'Klallam to move to Julia Point across Gamble Bay, which came to be known as Little Boston.
Tapping into the massive tree reserves along the Hood Canal the company flourished and by 1862 the Puget Sound Mill Company owned a shipping fleet of ten vessels supplying their lumber to a global world market reaching markets as far away as Australia, South Africa, Hawaii and Shanghai. Surviving economic booms and busts, the Puget Sound Mill Company eventually changed its name to Pope & Talbot and then Pope Resources. When Pope Resources closed its operations in 1995, it was the longest continuously run mill in the United States at that time. Even today, Port Gamble is a company town as Pope Resources reacquired the historical district in 1996 and refurbished the buildings and grounds.
The New England style slat-wall buildings have been converted into business spaces, a theatre and a small museum. Additionally, many of the original houses have been converted into guest houses. These properties are now managed by the Olympic Property Group, who are in charge of maintaining the houses, buildings, all common lawn areas, cemetery, church, museum and the water/sewage treatment plants. The family homes are available for lease, as are company offices. St. Paul's Episcopal Church built in 1879 is a popular choice for destination weddings, along with the outdoor Hood Canal Vista Pavilion.
To encourage a permanent work force, the The original company general store is a Puget Sound Mill Company built houses charming gift shop and coffee shop with and a play house for their workers. creative displays and fine treasures. 51 FJORD
Conchology: the study or collection of mollusk shells Tom Rice, the curator of the Sea & Shore Museum, was born in Port Gamble and began his shell collecting at the age of seven walking the shores of the Hood Canal with his grandmother. Since then Tom Rice became a leading conchologist of the Pacific Northwest and is the author of Marine Shells of the Pacific Northwest (1972) along with two other books on shells. He was the editor of the Sea & Shore (from 1970 to 2008) a popular journal amongst shell collectors that had over 1000 subscribers in its heyday. Interested shell enthusiasts can find all of the issues of the journal online for free at Conchology. Rice opened the Sea & Shore Museum in 1973 donating part of his collection to create the museum and continues to add shells every year. He now makes his home on the island of Phuket in the Kingdom of Thailand where he still collects shells.
Upstairs is a quaint line of display cases of curiosities that make up the informal Sea & Shore Museum. A local marine biologist’s private collection of shells, sea creatures and other natural oddities from around the world makes for an enlightening display that will entertain and educate the young and old. As you cross the creaking original 1916 wooden floors marvel at the creative displays of giant spiny conch shells and stuffed sharks. Next door at the Scratch Local restaurant, take a table next to the distorted antique windows facing out over the Hood Canal – perfect for storm watching or simply staring – as you order from the locally sourced menu. The seafood is delicious, but the lamb burger is inspired. The hand cut crispy fries are a favorite. You can tell by the large safe doors opening into a room that is serving as a pantry that this restaurant is in a space that once was the town’s bank. Little conversion idiosyncrasies like this, where the old safe doors are left in the modern space of a bustling café, exemplify Port Gamble’s whimsical quality.

The Olympic Outdoor center is located in a converted fire hall complete with a bright red truck parked out front. They offer SUP and kayak rentals that open up opportunities to explore the waterways of the Hood Canal and Gamble Bay. They also offer mountain bike rentals. Pope Resources has opened up the town’s privately owned 4300 acre tree farm for hiking and biking. Visitors may be lucky enough to see deer, owls, coyotes, or bears. Next door to the Olympic Outdoor center is the Port Gamble Theatre which offers productions of such classics as Charlie Brown’s Christmas (November 30 to December 16) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (March 29 to April 14). The theatre proudly claims to be established in 1906 and 2011–– as it originally closed its doors in 1958. Now the renovated theatre is entering its sixth season and often offers a dinner theatre option with productions. LOCALLY SOURCED & UNIQUE GIFTS Each community on the shores of the fjord and the inner inlets of Puget Sound has a unique personality. We invite you to take some time get to know each town – shop, stay, dine and support the local businesses.
BRINNON is located on the Hood
Canal waterfront. Here you will find food and shops. Be sure to stop in and visit the seven acres of heritage plants at Whitney Gardens and check out their retail store open year round. This is a great opportunity to find that elusive heritage plant for the gardener on your list. After your garden walk, stop in at the Halfway House Espresso & Gifts in Brinnon. This quaint diner offers fun shopping right next to their home style restaurant – remember to try the homemade pie! South of Brinnon stop in at the Geoduck Tavern for some great views of the Canal and tidelands.
QUILCENE, in land from the Hood
the antique shops to pick up some wellloved treasures. The Picket Fence features handmade and one-of-a-kind gifts in a country setting. Beautiful sewn creations, gifts for baby, pets, gardeners, food lovers and much more. Quilcene Village Store offers more than just gas and snacks – stop in for all kinds of gifts, beer and wine, and gourmet items that far surpass standard gas station fare.
LILLIWAUP is located at the mouth
of Lilliwaup Creek. Highway 101 passes through the small town. The small shop makes a great break for Olympic Mountain ice cream. Down the road at Hama Hama Oyster Farm, check out their retail store for some great gift ideas. Cookbooks,

HOODSPORT is a great place to
find unique Christmas gifts. Hoodsport n'Dive hosts a variety of items for the divers from masks and accessories to full certifications. The Octopus Gallery carries a beautiful selection of silver and gold jewelry at all price ranges. Owned & operated by Lucy & Tim, who are both goldsmiths, much of the jewelry is made on-site, along with some items produced by local artists. Lucy’s mother makes collectible watercolors that are copied onto cards, keychains, clothing, mugs, and more. Stop by the Hardware Distillery to sample their "fjord spirits" and pick up a few gnomes with wax hats (below) – starting at just $15, these make great stocking stuffers!
POTLATCH is located on the
western shore of the Hood Canal, near the mouth of the Skokomish River. Potlatch State Park is year round camping park with 5,700-feet of saltwater shoreline. Climb the hill to Peterson's Gallery and check out the native art carvings, prints and paintings. Reasonably-priced, the artwork would be a gift welcome by anyone on your list.
UNION is renowned as an artists’ haven. With a range of lodging options – from quaint cottages to inclusive resorts, the area was recognized as the “Prettiest Town in America.”
Stop by the Union City Market for local produce and wonderful gift ideas, many of them artistic creations you will find not anywhere else! Across the street visit the Union County Store and shop the pop-up clothing selection and handmade jewelry from local artists. Down the road, Cameo Boutique carries a great selection of wines wines as well as “Hood Canal” handpainted tableware. Recently Cameo started to carry a signature Hood Canal label wine that feature George Stenberg's photography.
Cameo Boutique's Hood Canal label wine.
ALLYN, located in the protected waters
of the South Sound, is famous for kayaking and boating on Case Inlet. Stop in for a selection of restaurants and shops. Don't miss the surprisingly wonnderful chainsaw carving retail outlet, Bear in the Box. Next door is a great little wine shop and down the road visit the specialty wool shop. Bear In the Box -- One of a Kind wood pieces
The Hardware Distillery "spirited" gnomes are popular and great value! FJORD 54
BELFAIR is nestled in the tip of Hood Canal. Belfair hosts local and chain stores and restaurants along with major grocery stores and many small local shops. A great place to pick up a cherished gift is at the Mosquito Fleet Winery. Stop by the Bent Bine Brewery for a tour and to take a few samples home.
SHELTON is the westernmost city
on Puget Sound. Here you will find a selection of great shops downtown. The main shopping area is located on Railroad Avenue, in the classic timber town core. Here you will find a selection of gift shops, antique stores, jewelry stores as well as a well stocked bookstore, Brilliant Moon, that carries a selection of natural handmade goods as well as freshly blended teas. Stop by Lynch Creek Floral for a beautiful array of gifts including furniture, chocolates and flower arrangements.
A favorite spot is the Treasures Thrift and Book Shops. Here you are sure to find a one of a kind unique item or sought after out of print volume. Head down the road to visit the Mason County Historical Museum to view the exhibits as well as shop from a selection of local books. It's amazing how rich the history of Mason County is and the volunteers at the facility are always happy to show guests around.
Have a difficult person to buy for? Try Tozier Brothers on Mill Street. From bee balm handc ream to bird feeders, boots, and backhoes – there is something for every stocking at this store – including the stockings.
On Cota Street stop by the Cota Street Antiques and check out the antique English furniture. Some of the pieces are slightly well used but if you like quality unique pieces this could the place to go. My favorite are the beautiful stain glass windows that the shop owner salvaged from buildings dismantled in England and shipped to his shop in Shelton. Priced from $25 – 45, each one of these is a work of art to begin a new life in your next project.
