Kai Hopf, one of the most experienced sail designers in the world, is now responsible for ALL NORTH SAILS-designs. The Australian born former World Cup sailor, together with the R&D team, has created a range of sails which impressively underlines his competence. Kai, who in the beginning was responsible for the wave and freestyle sails, already achieved a real stroke of genius with his first race-sail: the WARP F2004. He instantly catapulted Micah Buzianis into pole position and together they took the PWA Formula World Champion 2003 as well as the Formula Windsurfing World Champion 2004 overall title.

In his Maui loft, Kai dedicates himself to sail design as well as other "playgrounds". Besides his legendary fin designs, Kai’s sail design programs are used to update the McSail design software, which is used by all sail designers of all major sail brands nowadays. This software allows a much more accurate and faster development of new sail profiles and generates the important data for mass production. Kai’s computer programs help guarantee all NORTH SAILS have accurate shapes which equals improved performance. For 2005 Kai Hopf has put his focus on the Race and Freeride sails. The new range features completely new ideas and designs, where Kai transfers innovations from the race-development into the Freeride sails. In combination with his enormous experience in aerodynamics Kai creates unique sails, which combine enormous power with precise control and excellent handling. Now you need just half the number of masts for your quiver! Kai's greatest revolution for 2005 is the brand-new MINIMUM.MAST.CONCEPT. The idea is to need only half as many masts for your quiver of sails as you needed in the past. Using less masts not only saves you lots of money but also the hassle of storing and transporting a large quiver of masts. The core of this concept is the brand-new CARBON.EXTENDER. An ultra-lightweight extension, which extends all masts by 50 cm without any influence on the bend curve or sail performance. Therefore all 2005 NORTH SAILS sail lines can now be used with a maximum of 2 masts. Of course the classic mast extensions remain fully compatible. Get ready to rock in 2005!

NORTH SAILS INTELLIGENT.CONSTRUCTION - makes your sail longer lasting while still keeping the weight low! – To make a sail durable by just constantly adding materials and reinforcements is easy. On the other hand the weight easily rises up to the point where a 5.0 sail has the weight (and feeling) of a 6.5. At NORTH SAILS we offer the highest possible quality and longevity (proved through our unique 5 year warranty) while still keeping the weight on a very low level. Years of experience have lead to a construction that eliminates weak spots as well as over-engineering. For example on a Freeride sail we use our strong TRIAX cloth as a frame effectively reinforcing the sail, instead of extensively using (heavy) X.PLY at unnecessary spots just to generate optics. NORTH SAILS IC – we know what we do!

EASY.T - keeps the sail rolled up. A simply genius strap which keeps the sail tight after rolling up.

UNIVERSAL.TACK.FITTING - minimizes the downhaul-forces. The 3 integrated rollers reduce the downhaul-forces down to a minimum. The secret for the reduced friction are the rust-free brass-rollers. When used with a pulley-hook the rollers can be easily removed. Racer-heads can also exchange the rollers into high-end roller-bearing rollers.

TT.TOP - improved control in strong winds. Designer Kai Hopf has taken the TT.TOP directly off the F2004 PWA-Racing victory sail. The unique concave outline results in a 3dimensional top-twist. Means in stronger puffs the top not only twists in a horizontal direction but also vertically now. Puffs get completely buffered and the rig remains neutral.

INTELLIGENT.BATTEN - individual batten setting for improved performance! As each batten in a sail has a different function we use different batten styles. Achieves 100% draft stability in the center, optimum twist in the top (both horizontally and vertically) and reduced top-weight for easiest handling.

BOX.BATTEN - extremely stiff, extremely light! Stop the draft from moving! Our ultra-stiff BOX.BATTENS are unbeatable in terms of stiffness. 30% reduced weight due to the hollowconstruction and the high breakageresistance makes these battens the best we have ever produced.

MAST.SLEEVE.OPENER - makes it easier to insert mast into the sleeve! A genius trick to speed up rigging – a rubber logo above the boom cutout slightly opens the mast sleeve so that the mast can be inserted in one go.


DURA.LUFF.PATCH - long-term luff protection. The area around the boom cut-out is exposed to extreme wear and tear as the luff-panel gets folded when inserting the mast. This "accordion-effect" can lead to tears in the luff-panel after a while. The new flexible DURA.LUFF.PATCH reinforces exactly this area making for a soft transition into the monofilm to avoid film-breakage.

INTEGRATED.TACK.PROTECTOR protects the board and feet. Now all sails feature an extended integrated mast protector which is doublepadded in the upper area. It avoids dents when the mast hits the deck and effectively protects the feet from injuries.

DURATECH.FOOT - long-term-guarantee for the foot area. The sail foot gets constantly dragged over the anti-slip especially on modern widestyle boards. To avoid the anti-slip destroying the seams and cloths we use our patented DURATECH.FOOTconstruction where the seams are running within a plastic channel.

FLIP.ROTATING.SYSTEM - no pull, no hard rotation! Takes away the dreaded pull during rotation as the battens do not touch the mast.

CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT - power and handling perfectly combined! The intelligent solution, which lowers the draft and at the same time supports the wide boom area. Allows for a powerful profile without affecting the handling!

HYPER.LEECH - makes speedoriented sails even faster! Inspired by airplane-wings. Exactly defined spot from where the top reacts extremely sensible. Means: improved looseleech-twist for more control and improved stability in puffs and when getting over-powered.

3D.TECHNOLOGY - guarantees an absolute accurate profile! Superior aerodynamics and absolute profileaccuracy through laser-cloth-cutting, complete fold- and bubble-free gluing of the panels on 3-dimensional moulds avoiding any tolerance variation. The result is a monocoque-corpus with a built-in profile.

VTS-VISUAL.TRIM.SYSTEM - perfect trim and maximum range of use! You can’t trim faster and more accurate! Just pull the downhaul until the loose leech wrinkle in the top hits the "min wind-limit" or "max wind-limit" (according to the wind-strength) – off you go. The patented VTS® acts like turbo-charger and allows for maximum performance and range of use.

HTS-HARNESSLINE.TRIM.SYSTEM Forget about wrong-positioned harness-lines! Stop pumped-up forearms and the never-ending try and error method to find the correct harness line position! The print on the sail shows exactly the center of the harness line position. Just position both ends symmetrically left and right from the print and off you go.

Here is our fastest no-cam-sail, which combines sensational speed with the advantages of camberless sails in terms of handling and ease of rigging. It is a completely new development which Kai Hopf gave a progressively twisting TT.TOP and a forward-oriented draft position. This improves the rig handling, extends the wind range and remarkably improves the draft stability. No wonder the brand-new CROSSRIDE is the first choice of our SuperCross team. By the way all CROSSRIDE sizes fit on one 460-25 mast (one mast fits all!).

The brand-new R.TYPE was designed to work on all kinds of Freeride and Widebody boards, covering an incredibly wide wind range. Due to its low-end profile and the new TT.TOP it develops enormous low end power, gets planning extremely early and easily planes through lulls. It is the ideal weapon for days where the wind falls below planing force. The 2 supersoft rotating HYPER.CAMS keep an aerodynamic shape creating a rock solid profile, which in contrary to no-cam-sails is locked in even without wind pressure. This greatly improves the stability. To keep the weight at an absolute minimum the R.TYPE uses only 6 battens (except 9.5 and 10.5), of which 4 are extremely stiff BOX.BATTENS.

NATURAL

FREEMOVE/FREERIDE

The new NATURALs have been drastically improved, especially in handling, comfort and low end power. Kai Hopf "copied" a lot from the DISCO without reducing the top end speed. The result is an extremely balanced sail, where sizes up to 6.2 focus on handling and draft stability (freemove) whereas the larger sizes focus on planing and handling (freeride). The Natural is the perfect synthesis of speed, acceleration and control. This makes Windsurfing much easier and less complicated and the question: "What is the right sail for me?" becomes obsolete.

CROSSOVER FREESTYLE-WAVE

Powerful, direct and extremely versatile: hardly any other sail covers such a wide range of use from waves to flat water freestyle as the new DUKE. Strong acceleration and ample power push you through mushy onshore conditions as well as through speed dependent tricks. A slightly flatter profile and the new TT.TOP improve the high end control and handling so that the Duke is more neutral down the line or during difficult freestyle moves. A real sensation - all sizes can be used with one 430-21 mast only.

Ambitious freestyle sailors swear by the DISCO. The full-on trick sail is focused on easy handling, maximum low end power and an extremely wide wind range. They prefer the boosting acceleration as well as the absolute neutral handling. Through the integration of the new TT.TOP and a reworked twist pattern Kai Hopf improved the comfort and high wind control. You realize this especially in gusty conditions as the sail is much less nervous and easily planes through lulls.

SUPERSTAR

WORLD CUP WAVE

The legendary SUPERSTAR in the 2005 design. Extremely aggressive, very direct and due to a reduced pre-shaping and boom length it is now even more neutral when going down the line. This also supports the new twist-active TT.TOP which improves the high end control. Also new is that all sizes can be sailed on one (400-19) mast only! The Superstar is designed as a World Cup wave sail meaning it’ll perform as good in Hookipa as in Sylt or Gran Canaria.

HARDCORE WAVE

A completely new designed and much lighter VOODOO is wait-ing for you. Just 5 battens and the intelligent mix of X.PLY and TRIAX cloths reduce the weight to improve the handling and response. Yet the hardcore durability remains unchanged. It still remains one of a very few monofilm-free sails surviving even the most hardcore days. Due to its unique elastic Vinyl window the VOODOO is also the perfect sail for extreme nuking and gusty conditions. On top: “One mast fits all” (400-19) – the complete sail range can be used with one mast only!

The INSTINCT has also been radically changed, to cover an even wider variety of wave conditions and surf styles. With the new TT.TOP Kai Hopf increased the top-twist increasing the elasticity. The waterproof SNAP.LOCK IV secures the boom length and prevents the tubes from twisting. Thanks to the bolted-on front end and the one piece rear end, this even stiffer version of the Progression delivers power directly without collapsing even one millimeter (Boom can not be taken apart). It also has thin RDM tubes with oval SQUASH.GRIP速 sections which give a comfortable grip without affecting the durability and stiffness. The range consists of 5 different boom lengths. The PRO.GRESSION COMP makes a perfect boom for all sail types from wave to freerace.
