HONDA: world premiere of new electric vehicle pro

READ MORE ABOUT THE NEW ELECTRIC HONDA URBAN EV

Honda has confirmed that the upcoming Urban EV electric city car will make its production prototype debut at the upcoming Geneva motor show. The Urban EV will be Honda’s first massproduced battery electric vehicle sold in Europe, but electric vehicles have been around for over 100 years in various shapes and forms. The idea isn’t new, but the technology is. Throughout creating the Urban EV Concept, Honda’s designers and engineers looked at new ways of expressing these ideas and found that simplicity was key. The number of moving parts is dramatically reduced; only a fraction of what you’ll find in a conventional vehicle. That means much greater energy efficiency and less maintenance.

Honda's all-electric car was originally revealed as a design concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017. It was a huge hit with both fans and critics, prompting the company to green light a production model. The Urban EV concept proved so popular that Honda has made very few changes to the final car’s design. Inside, the major changes will be the switch from four seats to five and the adoption of more conventional switchgear. Honda have revealed very little since the Urban EV concept, but a new interior image has been released in the run-up to the Geneva Motor Show. The driver interface shown in the image features a full-width dashboard with clean design elements and intuitive user focused technology. The full prototype will be unveiled on the 5th March at 2019 Geneva Motor Show. 2

NISSAN

Nissan Leaf e+ to be released this summer.

Earlier this month, Nissan revealed their new Nissan Leaf e+, a car built in response to Hyundai's 279-mile all electric Kona. The new Leaf has been fitted with a 62-kWh battery, 22kWh more than the current 40kWh car and was debuted at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. The latest version of the secondgeneration Leaf now has 215bhp in addition to the increase in range. Having been tested under strict WLTP rules, the new Leaf achieved 239 miles from a single charge, up from the 168-mile range of the current 40kWh version. The batteries themselves aren't massively bigger than the 40kWh versions thanks to denser cells. This being said, the Leaf e+ does now sit 5mm taller than the regular 40kWh version. Bigger batteries needed bigger motors. The engine now produces 215bhp with an impressive 340Nm of torque and a top speed up 10% on the last model at 98 mph. Luckily even though the batteries are bigger in capacity, the charging time isn't longer. Thanks to a new 70kW quick charger, up 20kW on the regular car’s charger at 50kW, the charge time up to 80% charge remains at 40-minutes. The new 70kW charger is still compatible with 100kW charging systems. Other updates with the e+ include a bigger 8" touchscreen media display, newly updated navigation, different badging and a new front fascia with blue accents. The model will be available this summer with the new 62kWh battery, prices are expected to be from £37,105 MRRP.

KIA Kia triumphs at the iF Awards

T

iF Design Award 2019: 6,400 submissions from 50 countries

hree is Kia’s lucky number once again. Following the launch of the all-new third-generation Kia Ceed, now onsale across Europe in three different bodystyles, the three newcomers have each received an iF Award for design. This triple triumph in the world-renowned design competition represents the third consecutive year in which Kia has picked up a hat-trick of iF design awards, following similar successes in 2017 and 2018. This achievement underscores the Korean manufacturer’s reputation for first-class design, which, for over a decade, has been shaped by Peter Schreyer, President of Design and Chief Design Officer for Kia Motors. The brand won its first iF Award in 2010, and has created at least one prize-winning model in every year since. Kia has now been awarded a total of 18 iF Awards for its vehicle designs. The latest trophies have been awarded to each of the three all-new Ceed variants: the fivedoor Ceed hatchback and Sportswagon models, launched in mid-2018, and the all-new ProCeed five-door shooting brake, which went on-sale in Europe this month.

The iF Design Award, established in 1953, is one of the most prestigious design awards globally, organised each year by iF International Forum Design GmbH in Hanover: the oldest independent design institution in the world. In 2019, companies from 50 countries participated in the iF Design Award and submitted 6,400 products to be judged by an international jury of 67 design experts.

any Car Today CCT100 Awards Peugeot has achieved some fantastic success again at the 2019 Company Car Today CCT100 Awards.

Both the 5008 SUV and all-new Rifter are powered by a choice of petrol and diesel engines that meet the stringent Euro 6.2 limits and offer very low emissions, combined with impressive fuel economy and competitive company car tax rates. What are the CCT100 Awards? The Company Car Today CCT100 Awards run down the 100 cars able to serve any fleet requirement, picking out the class best in the 20 main car categories, and of course, anointing the overall Car of the Year. A panel of Company Car Today’s expert editorial team and contributors review the UK car market, assessing the merits of every car on sale to then decide on a shortlist of the top five cars in every segment. Each car is given a score based on what makes a good company car, including running costs, price, emissions, BIK payment, residual value – just to name a few. The winners for each category are then picked.

The Winners: • Peugeot 5008 SUV – ‘SUV of the Year’ • Peugeot All-New Rifer – ‘MPV of the Year’ It’s a second time win in the CCT100 Awards for the 5008 SUV which took the ‘SUV of the Year’ award in the inaugural CCT100 Awards soon after its launch in 2018. The all-new PEUGEOT Rifter brings style and practicality to the MPV sector, with a choice of five and seven seat models in two different lengths. Like the 5008 SUV, the Rifter benefits from PEUGEOT’s i-Cockpit® and flexible interior layout, combined with impressive carrying capacity. Commenting on the 5008 SUV award, Company Car Today Editor, Paul Barker, said, “The 5008 SUV does a great job of combining style and practicality with the sensible elements that make a great business car, such as impressively low emissions figures that lead to low running costs. It’s a fine illustration of how far the PEUGEOT brand has moved with its latest products, and very worthy in retaining the CCT100 SUV of the Year title.” Turning his attention to the all-new PEUGEOT Rifter, Paul said, “The all-new Rifter sets new standards for affordable practicality and peoplemoving ability. It’s a car that offers huge loadcarrying potential, clever use of space throughout the cabin, the option of a seven-seat layout and admirably low running costs. It’s a great new arrival into the sector.”

MAZDA MAZDA RELEASE THE MX-5 30TH ANNIVERSARY TO CELEBRATE THE VEHICLES 30TH BIRTHDAY. 30 years ago, at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show, the debut of the original Mazda MX-5 took place and Mazda have decided to do something very special to celebrate. Mazda have unveiled the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition at the 2019 Chicago Motor Show, which ran until 18 February. After three decades and more than 1 million units sold, Mazda feels that the MX-5 has grown into more than simply Mazda’s creation. It now belongs to the enthusiasts around the world who have supported the development of the model and helped it become the world’s best-selling two-seater roadster. Launched as both a tribute to these MX-5 fans and as a mark of the high hopes the firm has for the future of its sports car, the 30thAnniversary Edition is exclusively offered in the newly developed Racing Orange body paint, a strikingly vivid colour that marks out this special MX-5. In addition to Racing Orange, the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition features forged aluminium Rays wheels developed exclusively for the MX-5 in cooperation with Rays Co Ltd. and a 30th anniversary badge displaying the model’s serial number. Other unique features include orange brake callipers, and for the first time in the UK, Brembo front brakes. Inside, the bespoke feel continues with orange accents on the seats, door trim, dashboard, steering wheel, air vents and gear lever, while Recaro seats and Alcantara trim on the door trim and instrument panel add a sense of exclusivity. The 30th Anniversary Edition also features Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard. Just 3,000 cars will be produced globally, and fittingly for one of the world’s biggest MX-5 markets, the UK will receive

600 – 400 convertible and 200 RF. Marked out by its black two-tone roof, the Retractable Fastback RF is £29,895, while the convertible is £28,095. Commenting on the launch of 30th Anniversary MX-5, Mazda Motors UK Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said: “in the three decades since the launch of the original model over 130,000 Mazda MX-5s have been sold in the UK. This is a sports car that has resonated with enthusiastic British drivers ever since its debut and four generations on it’s as popular as ever. Along the way, it has remained true to the original principle of being an affordable, lightweight and above all fun-to-drive roadster. Today it is the very essence of the Jinba Ittai driverand-car-as-one philosophy that goes into every Mazda.” Adding, “and with its unique detailing, generous equipment levels, exclusivity and bold Racing Orange paint, the 30th Anniversary Edition is the perfect way to celebrate three decades of this iconic sports car”.
