Kia Ceed Sportswagon and XCeed PHEVs launched

Kia Motors has taken the next step in its vehicle electrification strategy with the unveiling of new Plug-in Hybrid variants of the Kia XCeed and Ceed Sportswagon. Due to go on sale across Europe at the beginning of 2020, the two new low-emissions models represent the first time Kia has brought electrified powertrains to the compact family segment.

Emilio Herrera, Chief Operating Officer at Kia Motors Europe, commented: “These two models represent an important next stage for Kia as we introduce advanced, nextgeneration powertrains to our wider vehicle line-up. Sales of the new Ceed range have grown 40.1 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2019, and new Plug-in Hybrid variants will further widen the appeal of the line-up. Both models are powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and an 8.9kWh lithium-polymer battery pack, producing 139bhp and 265Nm of torque. The PHEV powertrain sends power to the front wheels via a sixspeed dual-clutch automatic, allowing the Ceed Sportswagon to accelerate from 0–62mph in 10.8 seconds and the XCeed in 11 seconds. Kia is targeting an all-electric range of around 60 kilometres for both vehicles. CO2 emissions, economy figures and official charge times are still pending homologation and will be announced nearer to both cars’ on sale date. Both new models feature their own distinctive design features to differentiate them from other petrol and diesel models in the Kia XCeed and Ceed Sportswagon line-ups. Each car has a new closed ‘tiger-nose’ grille at the front of the car to aid aerodynamic efficiency, and Sportswagon models feature distinct ‘eco plug-in’ exterior badges. Equipped as standard with 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels and optional 17-inch wheels (Ceed Sportswagon) and 18-inch wheels (Kia XCeed) are available.

many other plug-in hybrid vehicles, in which the battery pack takes up valuable cargo space. As a Plug-in Hybrid, the Ceed Sportswagon provides 437 litres of luggage space, and up to 1,506 litres with the 40:20:40 split-fold rear seats folded down. Luggage capacity in the Kia XCeed Plug-in Hybrid is 291 litres, growing to 1,243 litres with the rear folded down. There is a dedicated space beneath the boot floor of each car to store the charging cable when not in use. Kia’s unrivalled seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty are offered as standard, extending to cover the new powertrain’s battery pack and motor. Built exclusively for Europe, sales of these new models will commence at the beginning of 2020. UK specification, pricing and on-sale date will be announced in due course.

Inside, both models come with a reconfigured version of Kia’s eight-inch infotainment screen, supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Kia’s UVO telematics system. The software incorporates a range of new PHEV-specific features, such as a public charge-point locator and a charge scheduling function for home charging, allowing owners to take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs. A 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system is available as an optional extra. Both models also feature Kia’s new “Driver Only” heating and air-conditioning function. The system is designed to reduce the draw on both cars’ battery systems by switching off all but the driver’s ventilation fans. The 8.9 kWh battery pack is located alongside the 37-litre fuel tank beneath the rear bench, unlike

NISSAN

Next Generation Nissan Juke

The compact crossover sector has grown significantly in recent years, with more than 20 supermini-sized SUVs on sale in Britain today. But one of the first of the breed has just been totally renewed. Introducing the second-generation Nissan Juke. The secondgeneration Nissan Juke replaces a model that has been on sales for nearly nine years. It’s bigger, lighter and better equipped than its predecessor. The Juke remains a stylish crossover with purposely exaggerated wheel arches, a rising window line, strong shoulders and a squat rear end. It’s 35mm wider and 75mm longer nose to tail than before, but importantly, the wheelbase has grown by 105mm. Despite the size increase, the Juke is now 23kg lighter, mainly due to the use of more lightweight, high-tension steel in the body, but also to the adoption of a new platform called CMF-B, which is shared with the Renault Captur. The new Juke will be launched with a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol from the Micra, with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an allnew seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, replacing the CVT transmission previously offered. The Juke accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds, while the top speed should be somewhere around 120mph. Nissan has yet to release final official CO2 emission and fuel economy figures, but 113-118g/km and around 45mpg under WLTP rules seems likely. The hatch is 131mm wider than before and it

accesses a boot that’s now 422 litres in size, an increase of 68 litres over the Mk1. The brand-new interior is more spacious than before, with rear kneeroom increasing by 58mm and headroom growing by 11mm. Much like the exterior, the cabin design majors on the Juke’s sporty character and is a total overhaul from the previous models. Buyers are presented with plenty of choice when it comes to exterior personalisation. The new Juke is available in 11 different colours, with wheels ranging from 16-inch steels with covers to 19-inch alloys. Top-spec Tekna+ cars are available with contrasting finishes on the roof and mirrors, too. Three optional interior schemes also add to the plenty of scope for personalisation, with availability in in orange, white or black leather and Alcantara upholstery. 6

READ MORE ABOUT THE NEXT GENERATION JUKE

Alongside this, the new Juke gains intelligent automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, speed-limit and traffic-sign recognition, lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert. Blind-spot monitoring is also present. The new Juke is available to pre-order now but will be on UK roads in November. Entry-level Visia models start from £17,395, but more popular N-Connecta and Tekna cars cost from £20,995 and £22,495 respectively.

Sitting on top of the redesigned dashboard is a brand-new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while some cars will also be available with a seven-inch colour driver-information display within the instrument panel. In-car technology and safety features have come a long way in nine years, and as such, the new Juke arrives with plenty of new driverassistance technology. Chief among this is Nissan ProPILOT, the brand’s semi-autonomous driver aid. It’ll be optional on N-Connecta trim cars and standard from Tekna grade upwards. 7

PEUGEOT

New Peugeot 3008 and 508 plug-in hybrids announced

P

eugeot has revealed details of of new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the 508 saloon, 508 SW and 3008 SUV ahead of their arrival in UK showrooms before the end of the year. With low CO2 emissions of 29g/km, the Groupe PSA brand believes the new models will find favour with fleet customers as the tax liability will be significantly lower than on conventional petrol and diesel models. The PSA Group powertrain pairs a 196bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine with an 108bhp electric motor on each axle. In the 3008, it recorded 176.5mpg on the WLTP combined cycle. David Peel, managing director of Peugeot UK, said the brand is “rapidly embracing an electric future. The all-new 508 Hybrid and 508 SW Hybrid will join our growing line-up of plug-in electric hybrid and fully electric models, including the all-new 3008 SUV GT Hybrid4 and the e-208 and e-2008 SUV,” he added.”

Powering the new 508 and 508 SW hybrid is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor, providing a total output of 225PS. Power is sent to all four wheels – a first for the 3008 – via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The car uses an 11.9kWh battery back, which can be recharged in less than two hours when using a 7kW charger. Through clever engineering of the battery pack, Peugeot has achieved zero compromise in boot space or versatility compared to conventional 508 and 508 SW models. A 221bhp front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid variant will be added to the range next year, powered by a 177bhp petrol engine and a 107bhp electric motor on the front axle. A 13.2kWh lithium ion battery provides up to 36 miles of electric-only range (WLTP), and Peugeot claims charging times of less than two hours from a 7kW domestic charger.

8

NORTON WAY CORPORATE • ISSUE 61 • OCTOBER 2019

The 3008 Hybrid4 can accelerate from 0-62mph half a second quicker than its Vauxhall sibling, in 6.5sec, and emits slightly less CO2, at 29g/km. This low emissions rating means it will attract a 10% business-in-kind tax rating as of April 2020. The electrified SUV features leather upholstery throughout plus driver assistance functions, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance, taken from the new 508. The all-new 508 HYBRID comes with 487-litres of boot space, with the 508 SW HYBRID providing 530-litres of load capacity. The launch of the new models works to fulfil Peugeot’s philosophy of ‘choose your Peugeot, choose your powertrain’, where customers can choose between conventional petrol and diesel models as well as electrified variants. It plans to apply this approach to all models within the range by 2023. When the new models go on sale later in the year, three trims will be available: Allure, GT Line and GT. The same powertrain will be offered in the 3008 Hybrid alongside a more potent 300PS allwheel-drive version that uses two electric motors and a larger battery.
