Kia e-Niro gets new tech and extra supply for 2020
R
eleased to the UK market in April of this year as Kia’s second fully electric vehicle, the e-Niro out-sold expectations, clearing through the UK’s total UK allocation of 900 units within a month. So far customers, all 3,000 of them, have been on a waiting list for the new model ever since. Heading into 2020, Kia has promised to clear their current order bank of e-Niro’s in the first 6 months of 2020, a promising extra allocation from July 2020. The 2020 model will undergo a handful of updates including new LED headlights, a revamped interior featuring a 10.25in touchscreen, battery heating system, ambient lighting, and a new telematics system. The 2019MY ‘First Edition’ will be replaced by a new, bigger-spec ‘e-Niro 4’. The interior features black leather upholstery,
heated front seats and heated steering wheel, an electric parking brake with auto-hold, auto air con, adaptive smart cruise control, smart entry system, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay, DAB Radio, and an eight-speaker JBL sound system. The new model will be available for £33,795 after the UK Plug-in Grant of up to £1,500. Kia’s UK boss, Paul Philpott, admitted the firm faced a “challenge” to meet the “unprecedented demand” for the e-Niro, but promised that “we are ready to meet customer demand for all-electric cars” in 2020. Orders are now open again, with deliveries expected to start from July of next year. Can’t wait that long? How about the new 2020 Kia Soul EV? The second-generation Soul EV, sharing the same platform as the e-Niro, will be arriving in March.

NISSAN
Nissan to renew full SUV line-up in next 18 months
S
tarting with the X-Trail, Nissan have committed to replacing their entire SUV range within the next 18 months. Nissan has also promised that a new EV SUV is on the way with-in the same time frame, as previewed by the new Ariya Concept, European Chief, Gianluca de Ficchy told claimed in an interview. The all-new Juke, the first edition to the updated range, was released last month, replacing the hugely popular first-generation Juke that sold over a million units during its 9-year run. Nissan dropped the diesel powertrain in the latest Juke, following a decline in demand for diesel powertrains. De Ficchy gave no further details of subsequent model-launch timings, but a source close to the company said the next model to be replaced will be the X-trail within the next six months. The next-generation Qashqai is set to be unveiled in September of 2020, with diesel powertrains also expected to be replaced with E-power hybrid technology that’s proven successful so far. Both the next-gen Qashqai and X-Trail are expected to share the same plug-in hybrid system available on their alliance partner Mitsubishi’s new Outlander model. As for the new upcoming EV SUV, Nissan have suggested that we can expect to see it from November 2020 or early 2021 at the latest. With the addition of these four new upcoming models, Nissan will then feature one of the youngest passenger car line-ups of any brand in Europe. The next-generation Nissan Juke is now available to view, test-drive and order from us at Norton Way.

MAZDA
2020 MAZDA 2 UPDATE
A well-regarded supermini, the Mazda2 has been updated and improved – from its styling and design to the performance and safety. The 2020 Mazda2 has had a number of updates and enhancements which have resulted in an excellent outcome. The 2020 Mazda2 comes with many updates in comparison to previous models; featuring a renewed exterior design, latest technology improved refinement and an upgraded interior – the 2020 model will be offered with a simple five-model range, exclusively powered by Mazda’s familiar 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine – which for the first time is matched to Mazda’s M Hybrid (mild-hybrid system^). Heavily influenced by Mazda’s latest design inspiration ‘Kodo’ as the new grille features a mesh pattern, bringing it into line with the style seen on the all-new Mazda3 hatchback, while the wider signature wing and revised headlights heighten the Mazda2’s sporty appearance. At the rear, the redesigned bumper gives the impression of a lower stance on the road. The interior boasts a range of soft-touch surfaces; with revisions to dashboard trims, air vent louvres, door inserts and the instrument hood these are just some examples of how improvements to materials and design have enhanced the Mazda2’s already upmarket interior. Highlighting Mazda’s driver centred focus, the new front seats feature a more advanced design and structure that better supports the body and helps maintain a posture in which the pelvis is upright and the spine maintains a natural
S-shaped curve. The comfort of all occupants has also been considered with a host of upgrades designed to improve refinement and interior quietness. New damping materials have been added in the cabin and a reduced gap around the base of the B-Pillar further upgrades sound insulation, as do revised sealing rubbers between the roof panel and the boot. The 2020 Mazda2 has had subtle updates which have enhanced its driver appeal with changes that include use of a urethane top mount in the rear dampers and revisions to the power steering to improve response and feel. In addition, the 2020 Mazda2 features G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) – the evolved version of Mazda’s GVC system, which now uses the brakes to apply direct yaw movement control in addition to the previous system’s engine control. Fitted to all manual transmission cars, the 2020 Mazda2 benefits from mild-hybridisation with the debut of Mazda M Hybrid. This system uses a belt-integrated start generator (B-ISG) and brake regeneration. This mobilises the B-ISG’s power generation to make the most of the energy stored in the capacitor to reduce load on the engine and enable quick restart to help lower emissions and improve fuel economy with extended auto engine stop time. As a result, manual versions of the 2020 Mazda2 emit 94-95g/km depending on trim level. The entry level for the range is 75ps SE-L which is priced at £15,795 and comes with a range features a standard equipment tally that includes rear parking sensors, 15-inch alloy 6

wheels, LED headlights, climate control and cruise control. Moving up the range, specifications SE-L Nav, Sport Nav and GT Sport Nav are all powered by the 90ps version of 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine and feature Mazda Connective Navigation with a seven-inch colour touch-screen, plus Apply CarPlay® and Android AutoTM. Further additions to the safety equipment have been added including Front Smart City Brake Support and Lane-keep Assist. From Sport Nav onwards the 2020 Mazda2 is equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, gloss black grille treatment, rear privacy glass, sharkfin antenna and a chrome exhaust trim, plus it benefits from the smart keyless entry. Sitting at the top of the range is the GT Sport Nav. This trim shows-off the premium features usually only found on typically more expensive sectors such as reversing camera, leather seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a colour head-up display. Commenting on the arrival of the 2020 Mazda2, Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director Mazda UK said: “the Mazda2 may be the smallest car we produce, but it has at its heart the same values of style, driver involvement and quality that mark out all our vehicles. With the updated 2020 Mazda2 all of these attributes have been enhanced; the Mazda2 is now even better to drive, plus it’s more efficient. Add in the refreshed styling, upgraded interior and the generous equipment tally across all models and we have a distinctive and premium contender in what is still one of the most competitive segments in the UK car market.” * standard on all cars with manual transmission

SKODA
New ŠKODA OCTAVIA scores five stars in Euro NCAP test
T
he fourth-generation of SKODA’s global best-seller has achieved a maximum fivestar score in the independent European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The results mean the OCTAVIA is one of the safest compact models available to purchase. With a score of 88% for Child Occupant Protection it puts the car among the absolute top performers of vehicles tested to date. Its outstanding overall result continues the tradition of maximum scores for SKODA vehicles in what is the benchmark test for crash safety, following in the footsteps of previous five-star performers such as the KODIAQ and KAROQ SUV models, the compact SCALA and the KAMIQ city SUV. The OCTAVIA Estate scored the maximum five-stars in the Euro NCAP crash and safety tests, which also applies to the OCTAVIA Hatch. The model performed particularly well in the field of Child Occupant Protection. Scoring 88% of available points, the OCTAVIA achieved one of the best results ever, along with its assistance systems, scoring 79% of the maximum points available. In the Adult Occupant Protection category, the OCTAVIA scored 92% of all possible points. The new SKODA OCTAVIA comes with a number of assistance systems but three were debuted
for the first time for SKODA – these were Collision Avoidance Assist, Turn Assist and Exit Warning. Front Assist including Predictive Pedestrian and Cyclist Protection uses visual and acoustic signals and gentle brake activation to warn of a potential collision, and automatically applies the brakes in an emergency. Side Assist indicates vehicles approaching from behind or in the driver’s blind spot up to a distance of 70 metres, effectively helping to prevent accidents on motorways and dual carriageways. And if, despite the numerous assistance systems, an impact is unavoidable, the proactive Crew Protect Assist system prepares the vehicle and occupants for the impending head-on/rear collision or roll-over. Up to nine airbags, among them a driver knee air bag and rear side airbags, protect occupants in the event of an impact. After a crash, the Multi-Collision Brake stops the vehicle, preventing it from rolling any further in an uncontrolled manner. The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) was founded in 1997, with its current members including transport ministries, automobile clubs, insurance associations and research institutes from eight European countries. The tests are conducted in Leuven, Belgium. These crash tests are conducted with current models 10
and are based to test their active and passive safety. Throughout the years these tests have become mo stringent and now test a wide varie of crash scenarios. Although the primary focus may be the outcome of the crash test, the results give a much better assessment of the active safety systems and driver assistance systems. Christian Strube, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Technica Development, says: “We are very happy with the five-star Euro NCAP test score for the new OCTAVIA. We work hard to take our vehicles’ active and passive safety to ever higher levels and provide road use with maximum protection. In recen years, all our new models have bee awarded maximum scores in this benchmark test for crash safety. Preceded by the SCALA and KAM the new OCTAVIA is the third ŠKO model to have achieved this top rating in 2019. The new generation comprehensive safety equipment is once again complemented by numerous assistance systems that were generally reserved for higher vehicle classes until now.”
