Hidden under its bodywork are hybrid, plug-in hybrid or allelectric powertrains, and each of them are best of the breed. A mid-life update earlier this year brought modest tweaks to the exterior, together with a significant uplift in quality inside the cabin. NISSAN
NISSAN REVEALS FUTURISTIC-LOOKING, ALL-ELECTRIC ARIYA SUV Nissan has revealed the Ariya, its new electric SUV that will launch next year. Revealed on 15th July via a virtual launch, the new model, billed as a coupe crossover, features futuristic styling that is largely based on the concept model show at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. The Ariya is offered with a range of power outputs and battery sizes, giving a range of up to 310 miles. The styling reflects the car’s electric underpinnings, with short overhangs and a closed grille. Nissan’s new logo features in the center of the front panel, illuminated by LEDs and flanked by additional running lights to signal to others that the car is switched on. The raked roofline and large 19-inch alloy wheels give a sporty appearance, when compared to the brand’s other electric model. Inside, there is a departure from Nissan’s existing interior design. The Ariya goes away from the traditional switchgear and instead, features an array of touch sensitive ‘buttons’. Two 12-inch screens dominate the dashboard, providing digital instruments and infotainment. Five core models will be offered for the European market, including two-wheel-drive and all-wheeldrive versions. The entry-level Ariya 63kWh two-wheel-drive model has a range of up to 223 miles and delivers 217PS. ŠKODA
Škoda Octavia RS and Octavia Scout Revealed
The Škoda Octavia, heart of the brand and bestseller in numerous European countries, has now been updated with two new additions - A rugged SCOUT and two further sporty RS variants. The new additions to the fourthgeneration range, were revealed via a livestream on 3rd July. By electrifying the powertrain with new mild hybrid technology and two OCTAVIA iV plug-in hybrids, Škoda has reduced the Octavia’s CO2 emissions even further. The iV variants can travel up to 60 km in the WLTP cycle without producing any emissions; the combustion engines have also continuously been optimised. They are now even more efficient. Furthermore, Škoda has lowered nitrogen oxide emissions from the new EVO generation of diesel engines by about 80 per cent using the ‘twin dosing’ process. With a choice of two body variants, front- or all-wheel drive, manual or DSG transmission as well as five drive systems – petrol, diesel, CNG, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid – every Škoda Octavia customer will find their perfect match.
OCTAVIA RS
In the fourth generation of the Octavia RS, customers can opt for one of three drive systems for the first time. With a power output of 180 kW (245 PS), the new OCTAVIA RS iV with plug-in hybrid drive and 6-speed DSG as well as the Octavia RS equipped with a 2.0 TSI petrol engine and a manual 6-speed gearbox or 7-speed DSG are each on a par. The 2.0 TDI delivers 147 kW (200 PS); it is always coupled with a 7-speed DSG, and all-wheel drive is an optional extra. The controtl electronics of the optional all wheel drive react to changing driving conditions within a fraction of a second and support the driving dynamics, for example when cornering fast. Here, the system transfers part of the driving torque to the opposite wheel when the load on the inner wheel is reduced, and maintains traction.
