SCAS NHS Trust Launches First Electric Kia Emergency Response Vehicles
T
wo Kia e-Niro cars have been launched as the first fully electric emergency response vehicles by South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS). The two electric vehicles have been designed and adapted by South Central Fleet Services to contain all the equipment, medication and supplies to allow first responder paramedics from SCAS to reach patients quickly under emergency driving conditions –generating zero emissions in the process. Charles Porter, Director of Finance at SCAS, said: “I am delighted that these first two fully electric, zero emission emergency response vehicles will shortly be introduced to our operational fleet. I would like to thank everyone in the project team for their determination and commitment to delivering this significant step in our strategy to continually reduce our environmental impact. “As an organisation, we operate over 1,300 vehicles to deliver our services so being able to move to fully electric vehicles will be vital in order to deliver our environmental goals. We are key partners in national projects to deliver zero emission emergency vehicle fleets and we are already exploring how we can bring electric vehicles into our emergency ambulance and patient transport service operations.” SCAS began its search for a suitable electric vehicle over 18 months ago, testing a great number of vehicles and making use of the latest advances in electric motoring technology. The Kia e-Niro delivered everything the Trust required. Nick Lambert, Head of Education – Driving at SCAS, said: “We tested quite a few electric vehicles and the Kia e-Niro came out on top every time as an all-round, versatile option for what we were looking for in our emergency response vehicles. Our staff will require extra training before taking the Kia e-Niro out on the road. Electric vehicles perform slightly differently from traditional 4

vehicles. We’ll need to train staff in how much more responsive they are in terms of acceleration and how to drive using regenerative braking, which allows us to regain energy whilst the vehicle is moving to extend its range.” The Kia e-Niro has a driving range of up to 282 miles on a single charge of its large 64kWh lithium-ion battery – well within the estimated 90-100 miles that an emergency response vehicle will cover in an average 10-hour operational shift. Charging points are available at the Trust’s ambulance stations, as well as local hospitals, so the vehicles can easily be topped up if needed whilst on standby. Gregory Edwards, Vehicle Commissioning Unit Manager, South Central Fleet Services, said: “It was really exciting for my team and I to be given the opportunity to design the vehicles from the ground up, taking them from a standard electric road vehicle to an emergency response vehicle. There were a number of challenges we had to overcome, including ensuring the additional electric systems needed in an emergency vehicle wouldn’t drain the battery, emergency light fittings, weight and space limitations, but we’re really pleased with the end result and our operational colleagues can’t wait to get behind the wheel and take them out to help our patients.” As fully electric, zero emission vehicles, there are also a number of additional benefits the Kia e-Niro will bring to ongoing fleet costs. With no internal combustion engine in the vehicle there is a significant reduction in moving parts required, no oil or filter changes needed, less waste produced, reduced downtime for the vehicles to be off road and a 25 per cent reduction in overall maintenance costs compared to a petrol or diesel vehicle, SCAS estimates. The UK Government’s Road to Zero strategy is a commitment for all new cars and vans to be effectively zero emission by 2040. The introduction of the first two electric emergency response vehicles into the SCAS emergency fleet is a significant step forward in the Trust’s own Green Strategy which aims to deliver a 50 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. These first two electric vehicles will be based at the Trust’s Oxford City resource centre as part of an initial pilot study. Once the anticipated performance, cost and environmental benefits have been proven under normal operational conditions, it is expected that further electric response vehicles will be rolled out to all areas that South Central Ambulance Service covers.

AWARDS 2021 WINNER: BEST SMALL CAR – HONDA E
H
onda’s Urban EV Concept has only been with us a short time but it has been earning rave reviews. It’s Honda’s first mass-market, pure-electric car, high on technology and great city car. Honda e has everything to make city/town driving effortless. There are many reasons why this is a clear award winner for SME users, with the car already having won numerous awards in the consumer motoring media. Firstly, the technology on the car is second to none. With no fewer than five screens taking the width of the dashboard from side to side, the Honda e is the only car in its class to feature cameras instead of wing mirrors. It’s also the only car to feature a virtual aquarium! Secondly, the cutting-edge design and styling makes it a highly attractive proposition. With clean lines and an almost concept style feel to it, the Honda e turns heads wherever it goes. Third, the driving experience is both dynamic and fun with the power going directly to the rear wheels and pushing the car from a standstill to 62mph in eight seconds.

Fourth, the car was designed with the urban environment in mind, hence the 126 mile range. The turning circle is smaller than that of a London taxi and the Honda e has a reverse parking function at the touch of a button, making it perfect for city driving. Fifth, SME customers will find themselves among celebrity owners with Guy Martin and the Joseph & Joseph brothers all owning a Honda e. Finally, when the SME driver is done with the car, the car has residual values among the best in the industry.

HONDA LAUNCHES E:PROGRESS CONNECTED EV CHARGER AND TARIFF
H
onda has launched a new connected charging service that allows electric vehicle (EV) drivers to save money by charging their car at the cheapest time. Saving users potentially up to £475 per year compared to a standard tariff. The e:Progess charging service combines a connected home charger with a dynamic energy tariff from Octopus Energy. The charger uses software developed by Moixa, which sets a charging schedule to ensure the car is always adequately charged when it’s needed based on the requirements of the owner, while optimising the use of low-price clean energy. Customers can change their charging requirements at any time through the e:Progress app. Electricity is provided by Octopus Energy, with its UK-first dynamic tariff, Agile Octopus, a combined tariff for both the EV and home which allows customers access to lower prices during renewable-heavy, off-peak periods. Moixa’s software selects the most costeffective times to charge the car based on the
tariff, which changes price as often as every 30 minutes in response to fluctuations in wholesale energy prices. Jørgen Pluym, general manager of Honda’s Energy Solutions division, said: “Introducing e:Progress to the market is a significant statement of Honda’s ambition in the provision of energy solutions as part of the continued move towards electrification and the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. “This unique and innovative service, our first energy solution for Europe, gives Honda e customers a highly-advanced intelligent charging solution offering considerable cost savings, while our partner Octopus Energy guarantees that 100% of its electricity comes from renewable sources.” Offered exclusively to Honda e customers, e:Progress is available in the UK now.

ŠKODA
T
2021 Škoda Fabia Officially Revealed With More Of Everything
he new, fourth generation of the Škoda Fabia is based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Toolkit MQB-A0, making it longer and wider than its predecessor. As expected for a Škoda, it is bigger than its platform-sharing counterparts to enable a spacious interior and best-in-class practicality. At 4,108 mm (161.7 inches) long, the not-so-little hatch is now 111 mm (4.4 in) longer than before. Most of the stretch is found in the wheelbase, now 94 mm (3.7 in) longer than before to reach a generous 2,564 mm (101 in). It remains a city-oriented car as before, but with the cargo capacity growing by 50 litres (1.76 cubic feet) Škoda is spicing things up with new Orange Sunset and Graphite Grey paints and up to 18-inch wheels. High-end versions of the Fabia will be offered with a contrasting Black Magic or Graphite Grey colour for the roof, side mirror caps, and the front grille frame. The new model depicts a rangetopping Fabia with full-LED lights front and rear along with a panoramic glass roof. It also boasts a grillemounted radar for the safety and assistance systems, plus sensors for Park Assist that works at up to 25
mph (40 km/h) and takes care of the steering. The large, free-standing display dominates the aesthetic of the new Škoda Fabia’s interior. The Fabia finally gets the company's 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment up to 9.2 inches in size. The touchscreen enables the modern infotainment systems as well as many other vehicle functions to be controlled with ease. The design sketch also shows the customisable Virtual Cockpit, which is a key feature of larger Škoda models and is now making its debut as an option for the Fabia. The engine line-up includes the familiar suspects, kicking off with a naturally aspirated 1.0-liter gasoline engine with three cylinders. It's offered with either 65 or 80 horsepower, and in both cases, it develops 93 Newton-meters (69 pound-feet) of torque channelled to the wheels exclusively through a five-speed manual gearbox. This base Fabia takes its sweet time hitting 62 mph (100 km/h), taking 15.5 seconds with the lesser MPI engine before reaching 107 mph (172 km/h) and 15.1 seconds for the sprint en-route to 111 mph (179 km/h) with the slightly more powerful engine. Step up to the turbocharged 1.0-liter engine and power jumps to 95 hp and 129 lb-ft (175 Nm) while sticking with the five-speed manual. This setup is good for a sprint in 10.6 seconds and a maximum velocity of 121 mph (195 km/h). The beefier version with 110 hp and 148 lb-ft (200 Nm) upgrades to a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed DSG and covers the sprint in 9.7 seconds (9.5s with the automatic) before maxing out at 127 mph (205 km/h). The flagship Škoda Fabia will see the return of a four-cylinder engine, a 1.5 TSI with 150 hp and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) as seen in the bigger Scala and Octavia. Offered only with the DSG, the bigger powertrain helps the stylish supermini complete the sprint in 7.9 seconds and reach a respectable 140 mph (225 km/h). Electronically controlled cooling vents in the lower intake cut fuel consumption by 0.2 liters / 100 km at a constant speed of 75 mph (120 km/h). Aero wheels play their part as well to maximize every drop of gasoline used. Škoda will sell an optional 50-liter fuel tank to enable a diesel-like range of more than 900 kilometers (559 miles) based on the WLTP cycle.

MAZDA
A GREEN PERSPECTIVE OF THE ELECTRIC MX-30
M
azda's first fully electric vehicle is now here and ready to be tested. The MX30 incorporates all the very best that Mazda is known for, putting the driver and passengers' comfort and safety as crucial inspiration for this re-imagined everyday electric vehicle. With the help of a review by Chris Lilly at nextgreencar.com, we take a look at the MX-30 from a green perspective.
or Sport mode, the MX-30 instead relies upon 'the regen setting and driver to perform tasks', and according to Lilly appears to 'work well'.
Eco-Friendly Interior
The MX-30’s distinctive, stylish and sustainable cabin features high-quality materials and a driver focused interior. The lower console incorporates a 7-inch colour touch-screen air conditioning control panel, and in a nod to Mazda’s founding as the Toyo Kogyo Cork Company in 1920, the Mazda MX-30 features cork lined centre console trays and inner side door handles. Harvested from the bark of trees without felling, the use of cork and door trim materials that incorporate fibres from recycled plastic bottles, are perfectly suited to Mazda’s first pure electric production car. Benefiting passengers and drivers alike, the sense of space is enhanced with a floating centre console that sits independently from the dashboard, while the use of environmentallyfriendly materials has been carefully matched to meticulous quality and finish.
Performance & Handling
Being described as an everyday electric vehicle, the MX-30 doesn't boast as a pulse-racing vehicle. Instead, to suit the needs of the everyday driver, the Mazda MX-30 holds a 107 kW motor, allowing it enough power to handle daily life tasks on either the busy city roads or quieter country lanes. It is also proving itself a key competitor among the electric vehicle group, due to its softer suspension, the MX-30 has been described as the more comfortable drive and performer among the newest range of electric vehicles.
Body Style & Comfort
The MX-30 certainly doesn't disappoint in the comfort and style category. Described by Chris Lilly, the MX-30 is 'a stylish machine' with 'the looks of a coupe-crossover but with the added practicality thanks to the pair of rear-hinged half doors, allowing easier access to the rear seats.' Ideal for a family of four, the spacious interior cabin offers comfort for those more longer holiday trips as well as the errands of daily life. Taking inspiration from Mazda's heritage as a cork manufacturer 100 years ago, the MX-30 interior cabin has clearly been extremely well thought through, the interior lining of cubby holds and trays are cork along with natural and recycled fabrics incorporated into the front interior to ensure longlasting convenience as well as a luxurious feel.
Mazda MX-30: Model Summary
‘The Mazda MX-30 is a very good EV. It’s comfortable, stylish, drives nicely and has a lovely interior. Some will want a bit more performance, others a bit more range, but the Mazda does all that’s needed of it in these regards, so the ‘rightsizing’ aspect must be remembered. Although not for everyone, it’s an EV that’s suitable and worthy of consideration for more than you might think.’
Range & Green Credentials
Although the 124- mile range may deter potential buyers describes 'the MX-30's range to be more than enough to meet the typical daily mileage of the majority of drivers in the U.K'. The MX-30 also incorporates a different tactic in terms of its braking energy, choosing to not include an Eco,
