MAZDA

Mazda2 Updated with Lower Emissions

Mazda has updated the Mazda2 supermini for 2022, with revised powertrains and new trim levels. The latest model has reduced CO2 emissions by up to 14g/km and will be available from October. All current Mazda2 models use Mazda’s 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, which is offered in 75PS, 90PS and 115PS variants. Mazda’s M mild-hybrid system is fitted to all manual models, with the exception of the entry level 75PS SE-L. All models in the range feature sat nav, cruise control, Bluetooth and air conditioning, while wireless Apple CarPlay is introduced from Sport trim onwards. GT Sport models are equipped with a colour head-up display, reversing camera, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The range-topping GT Sport Tech (115PS only) has adaptive LED headlights, blind spot monitoring, rear smart city brake support and a 360-degree camera. Changes to the Mazda2’s suspension and steering are said to improve driveability. The car is also equipped with Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus), which uses the brakes to apply direct yaw movement control in addition to the previous system’s engine control. Jeremy Thomson, managing director of Mazda UK, said: “The Mazda2 may be the smallest car we produce, but it has at its heart the same values of style, driver involvement and quality that mark out all our vehicles. The Mazda2 is now more efficient than ever, while thanks to the generous equipment tally across all models, we have a distinctive and premium contender in what is still one of the most competitive segments in the UK car market.” The 2022 Mazda 2 gets a slight £200 price increase, with models now available from £16,475 and rising to £20,845 for top-spec versions. It will arrive in showrooms and go on sale from October 1st 2021.

NISSAN

EDF and Nissan launch new vehicle-to-grid EV chargers in the UK

U

sing Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-toBuilding (V2B) technology, the project aims to help businesses work out how best to electrify their fleets and make the most of the batteries inside EVs. EDF has teamed up with Nissan to launch a new vehicle-to-grid wallbox charger and companion app, which could save fleet owners up to £350 on charging costs for each of their cars every year by selling excess electricity from their vehicles to the national grid. Available only to fleet owners of the Nissan Leaf and Nissan e-NV200. The 11kW charger can brim the Nissan Leaf’s battery in three hours and 30 minutes, which Nissan says is around 50 percent faster than using a standard 7kW charger. The wallbox works intelligently, by selling electricity from the car’s battery pack to the national grid during peak times and charging the vehicle at night when electricity is cheap. Like many contemporary smart home chargers, the EDF V2G charging system can take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs by delaying vehicle charging until late at night. But, the wallbox can also take power from the car’s battery and sell it back to the grid during peak hours. To prevent the charger from selling too much electricity and stranding the EV, buyers can set restrictions on how much range they require for the day using a smartphone application. It also allows drivers to track their car’s charge level in real time, or switch the charger to “sell” mode whenever they see fit. Phillip Valarion, EDF’s interim head of EV projects, said: “Today’s announcement marks an important step on the UK’s journey towards electric mobility. By combining the expertise and capabilities of EDF, Nissan and Dreev we have produced a solution that could transform the EV market as we look to help the UK in its journey to achieve Net Zero. “Our hope is that forward-thinking businesses across the country will be persuaded to convert their traditional fleets to electric, providing them with both an environmental and economic advantage in an increasingly crowded market.”

ŠKODA

What Car? Reveals why they think the Skoda Octavia iV is a great company car.

W

hat Car? Highlights the key benefits of Skoda’s fleet-friendly Octavia iV. Read on to find out why their panel of experts named it a 2021 What Car? Award winner and why they believe it should be on your company car shortlist.

navigation with a crisp 10inch touchscreen display, keyless entry and electric mirrors and more.

4. Skoda Connect

The Skoda Connect smartphone app has added functionality specifically for the Octavia iV’s plug-in hybrid powertrain – with the latest information about charging prices, types & locations. Equally, the remote charging features let you monitor and control your battery level wherever you are, while Remote Air Conditioning lets you pre-cool or prewarm your car before your journey.

1. Low BIK tax

The Skoda Octavia iV’s innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain blends a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with a 13kWh lithium-ion battery to deliver CO2 emissions as low as approximately 30g/km (WLTP tested). That means incredibly low benefit-in-kind (BIK) rates and road tax costs. With a BIK rate of 7% for 2021/22, you’ll pay from as little as £36pm as an employee in the 20% tax bracket, and £72pm for a 40% tax band employee. Equally, with the Octavia iV in class B for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), it’s road tax-free for the first 12 months and just £145pa in subsequent years.

5. Tech that makes driving easier and safer

You’re going to spend a lot of time on the road in your company car, and that’s why Skoda makes advanced driving tech a top priority with a range of standard and optional safety systems. Including Front Assist with Predictive Pedestrian Protection, Adaptive Lane Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control – keep you safe while on the road, while parking sensors and Blind Spot Detection help you navigate tight and narrow urban car parks more easily.

2. Cut costs with plug-in hybrid fuel efficiency

The Skoda Octavia iV’s hybrid powertrain also helps improve your fuel efficiency on longer trips. With up to 43 miles of all-electric range, and the typical daily commute being just 23 miles, you can do most journeys exclusively on all-electric power. With home charging rates of around 17p per kWh, that means you can drive locally for as little as 5.2p per mile.

6. Versatile space that adapts to your day

Using the optional ‘virtual pedal’, a simple waggle of your foot reveals the large 1.01m-wide access to the cavernous boot, making loading and unloading an ease. Remotely folding the rear seats provides up to 1,550 litres of versatile boot space in the Octavia Estate and around 1,405 in the hatchback. Equally, five comfortable seats make outings with friends and family relaxing, while a plethora of clever cubbies make storing smaller items a breeze.

3. Advanced tech with a premium feel

A great company car should boast cosseting comfort and impressive levels of equipment – and the Skoda Octavia iV really delivers on both of those fronts. All Octavia iV models come with the 10.15 inch Virtual Cockpit cluster as standard plus a head-up display and the intuitive Laura voice control for handsfree access to navigation, music and more. The high-spec SE L trim comes with even more goodies, such as comfortable heated microsuede seats, as well as Columbus satellite

7. It’s all just ‘Simply Clever’

Skoda is renowned for Simply Clever features that make everyday life easier, and there is a wealth of these that help to make the Skoda Octavia iV an even more compelling company car. They include an umbrella in the door to keep you dry on the way to meetings, an ice scraper in the fuel filler cap for those early frosty morning 10

starts and a ticket holder on the inside of the windscreen.

8. The option of vRS performance

Finally, the fun factor. Encompassing all of the versatility, practicality and comfort of the standard Octavia iV, the Skoda Octavia iV vRS injects an added dose of excitement into your daily drive thanks to a sports chassis with tuned suspension, body-hugging buckets seats and a 1.4-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid powertrain with 245PS, 400Nm of torque and a 0-62 time of just 7.0 seconds – all while still achieving up to 256.8mpg (WLTP Weighted Combined). KIA

The Kia e-Niro ‘2’ Long Range – Deliveries available from September

T

he Kia e-Niro is a firm favourite and one of the bestselling EV vehicles so far this year. The e-Niro ‘2’ 64kWh was introduced earlier this year to give buyers a long-range version that’s eligible for a £2,500 plug-in car grant (PiCG). Despite being an entry level trim, the new e-Niro ‘2’ Long Range uses the same 64kWh battery and 150kW motor as higher-spec versions of the electric SUV. It’s the first time the bigger battery has been available in the entry-level trim, with the car starting at £32,445 including the grant. However, it’s the lower price that makes it eligible for the Government’s revised grant as it costs less than £35,000.

Standard equipment includes a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control (with stop-and-go functionality), keyless entry and start, and an eightinch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Kia has also included a heat pump, which is a more efficient way of heating the interior - and doesn’t affect the quoted range so much. Buyers of the Kia e-Niro ‘2’ trim were previously limited to a smaller battery, which offers 180 miles of range. The bigger battery returns a 282-mile range and you can see as much as 382 miles between charges if you only drive around town. Recharging the battery takes 9.5 hours from a 7.2kW wallbox or just under an hour with 50kW 12
