Car of the Year Awards, commented: “The EV6 combines a huge real-world range with the ability to charge at speeds that no rival can keep up with, addressing two of the biggest concerns that people still have about electric cars. What’s more, by using bespoke electric underpinnings rather than a set that’s shared by petrol and diesel models, Kia has been able to take advantage of the compact size of electric motors and produce a car that’s hugely spacious and practical. “Add in effortless performance, outstanding refinement, competitive pricing and one of the best warranties around, and the striking EV6 doesn’t just look like the future – it feels like

HONDA

HONDA JAZZ WINS THE ‘SMALL CAR OF THE YEAR’ AT THE WHAT CAR? CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2022

B

eating off competition from some big names, the Honda Jazz Hybrid proved its credentials by being awarded the ‘Small Car of the Year’ at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards – one of the most sought-after accolades in the automotive industry. To be eligible for a What Car? Award, a car has to have been tested back-to-back with its rivals, both on UK roads and at What Car?’s dedicated test track. Beating off competition from some big names, the Honda Jazz is a small car that’s big on features, including anti-fatigue seats, a large carrying capacity of up to 1205 litres with ‘magic seats’, and an infotainment system with seamless smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Steve Huntingford, What Car? editor commented: “The Honda Jazz is a small car that feels like a big one, not only because of the sheer amount of space you get, but also because of the comfort and refinement that it offers. The interior is incredibly thoughtfully designed, too, with lots of clever touches to improve practicality. Plus, the Jazz is an easier car to see out of than many rivals, and its hybrid technology allows it to sip fuel, particularly around town.” Rebecca Adamson, Head of Automobile at Honda UK, commented: “To begin 2022 with an award win is a great achievement for the Honda Jazz and being recognised by the UK’s biggest car-buying brand is a fantastic badge of honour. The Honda Jazz is very important to us and our top-selling model - I very much look forward to seeing its success continue”. The Jazz’s winning combination of comfort, convenience and connectivity is coupled with sophisticated technologies such as Honda’s unique three mode e:HEV powertrain that delivers a full hybrid experience with efficient and responsive performance. Comprising two electric motors, a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine and an innovative fixed-gear transmission, the Jazz Hybrid plays a key role in Honda’s commitment to achieving 100% electrification of its mainstream model line-up in 2022. 4

MAZDA

2022 MAZDA CX-5 SPECIFICATIONS UPDATE

T

he 2022 Mazda CX-5 line-up features five trim levels: SE-L, Newground, Sport, Sport Black and GT Sport. For the first time, individual model grades feature subtle styling differentiation to give customers the option of choosing a CX-5 with a unique character and focus. The three stand out trim grades: Newground, Sport Black and GT Sport each have a distinct personality. The Sport Black grade pays tribute to the first-generation Mazda MX-5, with its classic sporty, red accents, while the GT Sport design features a luxurious Nappa leather and wood interior. The Newground grade is the perfect companion for any outdoor adventurer with its dirt-resistant interior and maximised all-wheeldrive performance. The entry point to the CX-5 range is the SE-L model, which is offered with either the 165ps Skyactiv-G petrol or 150ps Skyactiv-D engine. Making its debut with 2022 Mazda CX-5, and offered exclusively with the 165ps Skyactiv-G engine.

Predicted to be the biggest seller in the UK, the Sport model is offered with a choice of 165ps Skyactiv-G petrol or 150ps and 184ps Skyactiv-D diesel. The higher output diesel is offered with a choice of front or all-wheel drive. Matched exclusively to an automatic gearbox this 184ps Skyactiv-D AWD Sport is the entry point of Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system in the 2022 Mazda CX-5 range. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 GT Sport also features a wide choice of engine, drivetrain and transmission with both the 2.0-litre 165ps Skyactiv-G and 194ps 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol available. As before, the 165ps engine is matched to front wheel drive, while the larger 194ps petrol comes exclusively with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox with cylinder deactivation for improved efficiency. The GT Sport is also offered with the 184ps Skyactiv-D diesel matched to allwheel drive. Since 2012 the CX-50 has won over 100 awards internationally, taking home 45 accolades in its launch year alone. And its safety credentials include a TOP SAFETY PICK award consecutively since 2012 from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. With more than three million models sold worldwide since its launch, the next generation CX-5 is joining an exciting legacy. 6 6

NISSAN

NISSAN QASHQAI – WHAT CAR? CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2022: SAFETY AWARD

8

NORTON WAY CORPORATE • ISSUE 86 • FEBRUARY 2022

For this award, our judges considered both active and passive safety, along with purchase price, because a model that sells in large numbers will have a bigger influence on road safety... The Nissan Qashqai takes the top spot this year for a number of reasons, not least because its overall Euro NCAP safety score is among the best of all the cars tested in 2021. And the fact that such safety comes in a relatively affordable family SUV is great news; it’s likely to be a huge seller, and that gives it the potential to bring the latest safety technology, along with improvements in road safety, to many drivers. The Qashqai gained the year’s highest Euro NCAP score for Safety Assist: 95%. That’s because all trim levels come with a suite of very effective active safety systems, including automatic emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keeping support.

Its emergency lane-keeping system is one of the best; it will pull the car back into its lane if the driver inadvertently moves into the path of an oncoming car on a single carriageway, or if they steer the car towards the edge of the road. This helps to avoid these common causes of accidents. At higher speeds on dual carriageways and motorways, the lane support system helps to prevent the car from drifting out of its lane, working in tandem with the adaptive cruise control, which automatically maintains a safe distance from the car in front. Together, these systems improve safety by helping to reduce driver fatigue on longer journeys. On top of all this, the Qashqai has a very strong and well-designed body structure, enabling it to protect adult and child occupants in a crash just as well as some models that cost four times as much.

PEUGEOT

New Peugeot 308 range, coming soon to Norton Way The new-look Peugeot 308 hatchback and the more spacious 308 SW estate are available to order on the UK with prices starting at £24,000 and £25,200 respectively. Available for the first time with plug-in hybrid powertrains, as well as more conventional petrol and diesel engines, the 308 is distinguished by its bold new exterior design and its completely refreshed cabin. It’s also the first of Peugeot’s range to be graced with the new logo - the lion motif inside a shield on the nose and tail of the car. Customers in the UK are offered a choice of five trim levels, with the £24,000 Active Premium representing the entry-level option. For an extra £1,850, customers can upgrade to the Allure, while opting for mid-range Allure Premium takes the price to £26,750. Above those two trims, there’s the £28,650 GT model or the top-of-the-range GT Premium version, which comes in at £30,250. The basic 1.2-litre petrol engine offers 129 bhp and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The more economical 1.5-litre diesel engine that also comes with 129 bhp and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Above those engines will be the plug-in hybrids, of which Peugeot is initially offering two: the Hybrid 180 and the more powerful Hybrid 225 version. Both combine a 1.6-litre petrol engine, a 109 bhp electric motor and a 12.4 kWh battery pack, allowing them to cover up to 37 miles in electric mode before the petrol engine is needed, while CO2 emissions from 25 g/km make them an attractive choice for company car drivers. All new 308s will come with Peugeot’s latest-generation i-Cockpit technology, which includes a small steering wheel and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. That includes Bluetooth connectivity and the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration systems, as well as some ‘piano-key’ hotkey buttons for easier navigation. “With plug-in hybrid options available for the first time, the new 308 and 308 SW are the next step in our strategy to provide electrified variants across our entire model range by 2024 – giving buyers the choice to suit the powertrain that best meets their needs,” said Julie David, the managing director of Peugeot UK.

SKODA

Seven wins for ŠKODA in the What Car? Awards 2022

T

he ŠKODA SUPERB Estate has extended its remarkable winning streak by taking home the What Car? Best Estate award for the seventh year in the row. Not to be outshone by the seven-time winner, the new ENYAQ iV, SCALA, OCTAVIA, KAMIQ and SUPERB Hatch were all named as Best Buy winners by the What Car? judging panel. Read on to explore what the What Car? Judges had to say about the Skoda stars of 2021.

ŠKODA SUPERB Estate – ‘Estate Car of the Year’

“When it comes to carrying capacity, the SUPERB Estate turns it up to 11… carry-on suitcases that is. In other words, it has enough space for anything you might wish to carry, and then some. In addition, few rivals even get close to the passenger space it offers, while the interior is smartly finished, the ride comfortable and the pricing very attractive.” – Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor

ŠKODA KAMIQ – ‘Best Small SUV for Practicality’

“The KAMIQ is exactly what many buyers are looking for: a smallish car with small car costs and small car convenience, but the practicality of something much larger.”

ŠKODA OCTAVIA – ‘Best Family Car for Practicality’

"All passengers are well catered for in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA, while the boot is simply cavernous. It comfortably betters those of direct rivals, and shames a number of much larger models."

ŠKODA ENYAQ – 'Best Electric SUV for Value’

"When you look at everything that you get with the ENYAQ iV, it frankly looks like a bargain compared with any of its similar-sized rivals. Yet despite that keen pricing, it comes very well equipped and its interior feels expensive.”

ŠKODA SCALA – ‘Best Family Car for Value’

"The SCALA is very temptingly priced, the 1.0-litre petrol engine in our favourite version offers low running costs, and our recommended SE trim gets lots of standard kit.”

ŠKODA SUPERB – ‘Best Executive Car for Value’

"The SUPERB has long been a What Car? favourite, because it punches well above its weight when it comes to space and comfort, and delivers a knockout blow in terms of value for money.”
