SEP 2022 ISSUE 92

As a result of the overwhelming success of the first-generation car, the second-generation was offered across Europe; thanks, in part, to now being manufactured in the United Kingdom. The new car introduced an all-new, and now iconic 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC ‘K’ series engine that redefined what a normally aspirated two-litre engine could do. It too featured uprated brakes, a precise, close-ratio six-speed transmission and a shell that made extensive use of high-tensile steel to increase torsional static rigidity.

EK9 (1997-2000): An affordable, accessible Type R for all The Type R nameplate can be traced back to the 1992 Honda NSX Type R, which raised the bar on performance. Applying the Type R philosophy to the Civic followed a similar engineering ethic offer an engaging, rewarding drive. The EK9 was offered to the Japanese market only and had a high-end specification; including a hand-ported 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine that produced a highly impressive 116bhp-per—litre. Launched to outstanding reviews, the EK9 set in motion the pursuit of the ultimate front-engine, front wheel drive performance hatchback.

FN2/ FD2 (2007-2011) Type R – two ways

The third generation Civic Type R was unique in that the European and Japanese models differed dramatically. Europe received the FN2-based hatchback, which retained the proven 2.0-liter engine, but introduced a new chassis that moved the fuel tank beneath the front seats to improve interior space and flexibility. Japanese customers were instead offered the FD2 saloon, which offered an even more focused driving experience thanks to additional items such as a more powerful K20A engine, a helical LSD and powerful Brembo brakes.

HONDA Honda’s iconic Civic is celebrating two anniversaries this year: 50 years of continuous production and 25 years of the high-performance, race-derived Type R variant, which rewrote the rulebook on what a hot hatch should be. One that can comfortably handle the daily commute from Monday to Friday, before tackling the circuit at weekends.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

EP3 (2001 – 2005) A European take on the Type R

TurboA As market and regulatory expectations shifted, the move toward turbocharging was inevitable. Honda engineers worked meticulously to develop the K20C1 turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that offered explosive performance thanks to a 310PS output. In order to better control that significant increase in power, Honda introduced its Dual Axis Strut Suspension paired with a limited-slip differential to counter the torque-steer encountered in high output front wheel drive cars. The FK2 proved a formidable base for a competition car.

FL5 (2022-) Ultimate Sports 2.0 Launching later this year, the allnew generation car further evolves, matures, and refines technologies that have been developed over several generations. Whilst new technologies and refined aerodynamics have helped set the bar higher once again, a clear lineage can be traced back to the FD2 generation with the incremental revisions resulting in the fastest, most rewarding and addictive Civic Type R ever built. Already the track record holder at Suzuka, the 2022 Civic Type R is a fitting way to celebrate 30 years of the Type R nameplate.

FK2 (2015-2017) Introducing the VTEC

FK8 (2017-2022) The Ultimate Sports hatchback Arriving in 2017, the FK8 was the ultimate evolution of the Civic Type R. A significant evolution of the FK2, the new car gained a host of new mechanical features such as adaptive dampers, and further revisions to the engine to boost power to 320PS. The model also introduced downforce to the equation for an even more intense drive; the external aerodynamic package worked in unison with an advanced, almost flat underfloor, to actively contribute to negative lift.

Contemporary Style: The streamlined bonnet, clean lines and smooth surfaces all add up to the new Civic’s fresh and modern profile.

Adaptive headlights: The new Civic Advance features adaptive driving beam headlights that can individually control each headlight to maintain a wide and distant spread of light without dazzling other traffic or pedestrians.

Enhanced sensing: With new front and rear sonar sensors and a 100 degree extra wide front camera, the new Civic can better detect pedestrians and even small object on the road.

GROUND-BREAKING TECHNOLOGIES OF THE MAZDA CX-60 MAZDA 6 NORTON WAY CORPORATE • ISSUE 92 • SEPTEMBER 2022 6

First, a closer look at the innovative new feature of the CX-60: the Mazda Driver Personalisation System, designed to put the driver in the optimal driving position, every time. As anyone who shares a vehicle with other drivers knows, it takes more than a quick seat adjustment and tweak of the rear-view mirror when you jump in the car to get everything just right.

That’s why the Mazda Driver Personalisation System incorporates three functions: an automatic driving position guide, automatic setting restoration, and ingress/egress assistance*. Using a camera, the automatic driving position guide detects the position of drivers eyes and, based on your height and estimated physique, it adjusts the seat, steering wheel*, head-up display and door mirrors to match your eye line. This suggested optimal driving position provides comfort while ensuring you have an excellent view in and around the Mazda CX-60.

The second function—automatic setting restoration—builds on the first by using the camera and facial recognition technology to return the CX-60 to suit your driving preferences. This extends further than simply restoring the driving position and includes audio and air-conditioning settings. The Mazda Driver Personalisation System can store settings for up to six people, meaning you’ll always find the CX-60 ready for you, even if you weren’t the last person behind the wheel.

Lastly, on Homura and Takumi model grades the Mazda Driver Personalisation System features ingress/egress assistance, sliding the steering wheel and seat away from each other to make it that much easier to get in and out of the car. To keep the driver safe and allowing the driver to focus on enjoying the drive, the Mazda CX-60 is equipped with a comprehensive range of i-Activsense safety technologies. Features debuting on the Mazda CX-60 include 360-degree See-Through View camera, Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Blind Spot Monitoring with Vehicle Exit Warning. See-Through View is a next-generation

he all-new Mazda CX-60—the first plug-in hybrid vehicle and new flagship SUV—is equipped with the latest technological advancements to ensure that every journey is built around your comfort and safety, making every drive enjoyable.

360-degree monitor that provides an extended field of view when parking the Mazda CX-60, making you aware of your surroundings. Hill Descent Control (HDC) provides a safe descent of steep slopes when the surface is rough or slippery, giving you confidence when making full use of the CX-60’s i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive system. Lastly, Blind Spot Monitoring with Vehicle Exit Warning alerts you before opening the door if an object is coming into a blind spot, meaning you can exit the car safely. The innovative technologies featured on the all-new Mazda CX-60 provide new levels of comfort and safety to all occupants. And with the first plug-in hybrid powertrain delivering outstanding performance, every journey in the CX-60 will be memorable.

Optimised battery management and infotainment: ŠKODA launches for ENYAQ

ŠKODA

In terms of battery and charging, the new software offers, among other things, a battery care mode in which the battery is only charged to a maximum of 80 percent during the next charging process. This helps to conserve the battery and extend its service life. However, its full storage capacity and maximum charging speed will be available at any time, should there be a need for them. The maximum charging rate will increase to 120 kW for the cars featuring the 62-kWh battery and 135 kW for models with the large 82-kWh battery. For owners with an ENYAQ iV with 50 kW charging rate as standard this will only apply if they purchased upgraded DC charging as an option or upgraded their charging rate via the approved ŠKODA accessory upgrade. The charging and range graphics in the infotainment system now also include a display of the destination and any required chargingTherestops.have also been improvements to the Virtual Cockpit and the head-up display, including displays of the current battery charge level. The rear-view camera offers increased contrast, for improved visibility of the car’s surroundings. A button on the multifunction steering wheel allows the driver to switch quickly and easily between Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Travel Assist. In addition, numerous ŠKODA Connect online services have been expanded or refined, making them even more intuitive to use.

ŠKODA AUTO is performing a software update for existing ENYAQ iV models as part of a free service campaign. KODA AUTO will start installing the new ME3 software version for already delivered ŠKODA ENYAQ iV cars with immediate effect. This will enable increased range due to the optimisation of battery management. The software also offers numerous improvements for the Virtual Cockpit and the head-up display, the infotainment system and the ŠKODA Connect online services. Owners of qualifying vehicles will be contacted by their local ŠKODA retailer and asked to book a free service appointment to install the new software. The process takes about five hours. Future updates will be performed over-theair. New ŠKODA ENYAQ iV vehicles and the ŠKODA ENYAQ Coupé iV will come with the new software as standard.
