MAZDA CX-60 NAMED BEST FLEET LARGE SUV IN THE 2023 FLEET WORLD AWARDS

The Mazda CX-60 has taken the Best Large SUV title in the 2023 Fleet World Awards. With a choice of PHEV or diesel mild-hybrid powertrains, the Mazda CX-60 sits at the top of Mazda’s awardwinning UK SUV line-up.

Commenting on the CX-60’s award, Fleet World, Editor, John Challen, said: “with plug-in hybrid and diesel variants, the CX-60 provides plenty of choice, in a product that is well built, good to drive and offers a very well-appointed interior.” Adding, “long journeys are made much easier with this Mazda.”

The CX-60 PHEV is the most popular vehicle in the UK thanks to its Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre fourcylinder petrol engine, 129kW electric motor, and 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery. However, for drivers who travel farther distances, the range has been extended with the addition of the brand-new in-line six-cylinder 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engine.

There are three highly specialised model grades available for the Mazda CX-60 PHEV and CX-60 e-Skyactiv D MHEV: Exclusive-Line, Homura, and Takumi. The stunning front-engine, rear-wheel drive SUV architecture of the Mazda CX-60 is rugged and beautifully dynamic, communicating the intellect and elegance of the most recent innovations in Kodo design.

The Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv-D MHEV offers the ideal answer for many private buyers, higher-mileage drivers, or anybody who tows frequently, demonstrating Mazda's commitment to a multi-solution approach to sustainable mobility and the principle of the right solution at the right time. The all-new 3.3-liter in-line six-cylinder diesel engine incorporates Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI) Technology, another illustration of Mazda's approach to engine development that never ceases to be difficult. The new e-Skyactiv D

unit, which achieves a thermal efficiency of over 40%, is one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world thanks to its extremely unique advanced combustion technology.

Exclusive-Line trim is the only place where the 200 horsepower engine is available, and it only comes with rear-wheel drive. However, Exclusive-Line can also be ordered with the new engine's higher output, 254 horsepower variant, which comes with all-wheel drive. There are many options available to customise your CX-60, including the combined Convenience and Driver Assistance Pack, which is an option on all Exclusive-Line CX-60s. Both the Homura and the top-of-the-line Takumi grade are only available with the 254ps AWD drivetrain; these vehicles can be specified with the optional Convenience and Driver Assistance Pack. A Panoramic Roof is optional on the Homura and standard on Takumi diesel models.

As you’d expect from a Mazda, the new e-Skyactiv D powered CX-60 delivers an impressive blend of performance and efficiency, alongside the driver focused handling, impressive comfort and high-quality found across the CX-60 range. The 200ps engine returns a WLTP average fuel consumption of 56.5mpg with CO2 emissions of only 129g/km in rear-wheel drive ExclusiveLine guise, while the AWD 254ps Exclusive Line, Homura and Takumi WLTP average fuel consumption is 53.3mpg with CO2 emissions from 137g/km.

PEUGEOT REVEALS NEW 2008 WITH UPDATED DESIGN AND NEW ELECTRIFIED POWERTRAINS

The PEUGEOT 2008 was introduced at the end of 2019 and has produced close to 700,000 units. It has continuously ranked among the top three B-segment SUVs in Europe, taking the top spot in 2021. In particular, the e-2008, which accounted for 17.4% of European 2008 sales in 2022, is credited for this model's success.

A new electric powertrain for the new e-2008 with a range of up to 252 miles (WLTP) is featured in the new 2008 along with a redesigned, more forceful look. Orders will be accepted in the summer in three trim levels: Active, Allure, and GT.

Design

The redesigned look of the new 2008 emphasises its step upmarket and improves its SUV designation. The design features a redesigned, larger front end with the new PEUGEOT shield integrated into it as well as a particular lateral pattern connecting to the headlamps. While the front end of Allure and GT versions has a vertical pattern in the same colour as the bodywork, the front end of Active variants is supplemented with a horizontal pattern in gloss black.

The new 2008 also features the newest PEUGEOT light signature, which debuted on the new 508 and 508 SW and is distinguished by three vertical light claws built into the gloss black bumper inserts. Exclusive complete LED headlights made comprised of three light modules are available only on GT models. By providing them a unique front-end characteristic, this sets the GT models apart from the rest of the lineup.

At the rear, the new 2008’s distinctive threeclaw light signature has also been redesigned. The LED rear lights are made up of three superimposed horizontal double slats, which help to visually widen the car’s stance. The reversing lights and indicators are also LEDs.

Powertrains

The new 2008 will be available with a range of electric, hybrid (from 2024), and petrol powertrains, enabling each customer to choose the version that best suits their needs. From launch, the new fully-electric PEUGEOT e-2008 benefits from a larger 54kWh battery and a new electric motor, with maximum power increasing by 18% to 156hp. The range also increases to 252 miles (WLTP mixed cycle), up from 214 miles.

Two types of onboard chargers are available on the new PEUGEOT e-2008: as standard, a single-phase 7.4kW charger and, as an option, a

three-phase 11kW charger. The new e-2008 can be recharged from 0-80% in 30 minutes from a 100kW rapid charger, or 7 hours 30 minutes from a 7.4kW charger.

Technology

On Allure trims and above, the new 2008 is available with PEUGEOT’s i-Connect® infotainment system, which offers full connectivity through wireless phone mirroring (Apple CarPlay™/Android Auto). The system can be controlled via the central 10-inch high-definition touchscreen or via natural voice recognition,

activated by saying “Ok PEUGEOT.” PEUGEOT i-Connect® Advanced is available as an option across the range, which adds a high-performance TomTom® connected navigation system with over-the-air updates.

NEW GENERATIONS OF KODIAQ AND SUPERB SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE SUPER-COLD TESTING IN THE ARCTIC CIRCLE

IN-DEPTH COLD TESTING FOR THE NEW SUPERB AND KODIAQ GENERATIONS BY SKODA COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY.

SKODA
NORTON WAY CORPORATE • ISSUE 101 • JUNE 2023
NORTON WAY CORPORATE • ISSUE 101 • JUNE 2023

In-depth cold testing for the new Superb and Kodiaq generations by Skoda was completed successfully there. The quality, performance, and durability of the vehicles were evaluated in - 30 degree Celsius temperatures. These tests primarily examined driving stability, passenger comfort in slippery situations, and general dependability during protracted winter drives. The added weight of the snow and ice had to be supported by the vehicles as well. The testing of the new models has reached its final stage following the completion of the extremely cold trials. In the autumn of 2023, the second-generation Kodiaq and the new Superb will make their world debuts.

Johannes Neft, Škoda Auto Board Member for Technical Development, says: “Real-world testing in the toughest possible environmental conditions remains a crucial part of new-vehicle development, despite the advances in computer simulation. Our extensive test programmes in desert climates with extremely high temperatures on the one hand and on the other hand in the Arctic Circle ensure that Škoda customers can rely 100 percent on their vehicles in any weather conditions. At the same time, these tests give us the opportunity to identify optimization needs as early as possible and to design the vehicles in the best possible way to meet the requirements of everyday operation.”

Comprehensive range of tests covering all vehicle aspects

Intensive test drives in subzero temperatures are a regular part of the development schedule for new vehicles. The fourth-generation Skoda Superb and the second generation of the Kodiaq SUV have now shown they can handle any winter obstacle, and Skoda Auto regularly undertakes such tests in the Arctic Circle. The test vehicles' chassis, bodies, engines, heating systems, and entire electrical systems were all carefully examined.

Vehicle performance in snowy conditions

Skoda Auto studies the impacts of snow on the bodywork, as well as the results of snow entering the engine compartment and air intakes, to evaluate the vehicles' overall winter performance. Even at minus 25 degrees Celsius, the vehicle body's mechanical and electrical

systems must operate faultlessly, and the engine must start easily at temperatures around minus 30 degrees. On PHEV vehicles, all doors, the bonnet, the tailboard, as well as the fuel filler cap and the lid of the charging plug, must be able to open even under such challenging circumstances.

Tests examining driving behaviour and assistance systems

The performance of the front and rear bumpers when the car strikes a snow barrier, for instance, is one of several characteristics of the vehicle's behaviour that are evaluated during real-world driving. Another is how the vehicle handles slush on the road. Driving over ice blocks puts the suspension and underbody's durability to the test. The test drivers evaluate the vehicles' handling on slippery and snowy roads as well as the effectiveness of the assistance devices. The testers rate the driving characteristics of the vehicles, the effectiveness of the all-wheel drive, if present, and the functional qualities and ride quality of the suspension. They check whether the transmission shifts faultlessly and whether the windscreen wipers and washers work. The vehicle lighting at night and the acoustic behaviour of frozen vehicle parts are also tested. High-voltage batteries of PHEV vehicles are charged in a frozen state, followed by a determination of the maximum range. To precisely assess the vehicles’ durability in winter conditions, the test drivers cover tens of thousands of kilometres.

Testing interior functions

The test programme also examines a variety of interior features, such as how well the heating system performs in extremely cold weather and the degree of thermal comfort inside. The inspectors also look at how quickly the windows can defrost and whether the windows mist up. Additionally, they check to see if the heating systems for the steering wheel, windscreen, external mirrors and seats function as they should. When appropriate, they also check the auxiliary heating option. The drivers also test how quickly the central touchscreen responds when the interior temperature of the car drops below zero.

MG Cyberster makes exclusive debut in London

Apre-production design model of MG’s dramatic new sports car, the Cyberster, has made a first appearance at a special preview event held at the MG Motor UK headquarters in Marylebone, London. Advanced design director Carl Gotham and his Marylebone team – who played a key role in creating the Cyberster – revealed the model for the first time.

Removing the covers, Carl commented: “It is a special moment for all of us who have played a part in designing this unique car. The Cyberster will offer MG customers a striking, all-electric roadster which will be as exciting as MG sports cars of the past.”

MG is producing a brand-new movie that focuses on the design story to commemorate the impending release of the Cyberster. This talk by Carl Gotham describes how his team came up with the idea for the first commercially available all-electric sports automobile.

The unusual styling of the Cyberster, which was conceptualised by Gotham and his fellow designers at MG's design studio in Marylebone, London, is inspired by MG's history. Signature design elements include a recognisable long bonnet, low nose, and curved surfaces. Additionally, the Cyberster will debut some eyecatching new elements like scissor doors and a Kammback rear design.

The two-seater Cyberster marks a keenly anticipated return to sports car production by the MG marque, with the car bringing the story right up to date with a high performance all-electric powertrain and modern cabin featuring an array of advanced driver technology. The Cyberster is scheduled to arrive in the UK and Europe in the summer of 2024 and MG will shortly announce further details of its first public appearance this year.

MG wins ‘Best Electric Car’ at 2023 Autocar Awards

The MG4 EV returned to the podium last night, securing the ‘Best Electric Car’ title at the 2023 Autocar Awards held at the iconic Silverstone race circuit.

The all-electric hatchback, which debuted in the UK in the fall of 2022, has won a slew of honours and contributed significantly to MG's strong sales growth. Since its launch in September 2022, the MG4 EV has been the second-best-selling electric vehicle in the UK, with over 5,200 customers taking delivery of the vehicle thus far.

Autocar Editor Mark Tisshaw commented:

“MG has become a big hitter in the UK car market with their cars value striking a chord with customers. The MG4 impressed all our judges, but what is most intriguing is that this looks like a sign of things of much to come from MG. But for now, there is no doubt the MG4 is an electric family car that offers impressive spaciousness, driver engagement, rapid charging and range for a very competitive price.”

Guy Pigounakis, MG UK’s Commercial Director, added:

“Receiving an Autocar award is a very significant achievement, and we’d like to thank the expert judging panel for their very positive feedback. There’s certainly much more to come from MG and this includes our recent announcement that we will return to manufacturing sports cars. The Cyberster, a full EV roadster, will arrive in the UK next year and will build on the success of the MG4.”

23YM HONDA EM1 E

BIKES

The EM1 e: is Honda’s first two-wheeled electric vehicle for customers in Europe, following the announcement in September 2022 of the company’s plans to introduce 10 or more electric two wheelers globally by 2025. It is also a notable first step towards meeting Honda’s stated aim of carbon neutrality for all its motorcycle line-ups during the 2040s.

The ‘EM’ stands for Electric Moped, and the model is aimed squarely at a young demographic looking for easy, fun, emission-free urban transport. It is compact, flat-floored, with smooth styling that marks out its difference and unique identity within the Honda range.

Perfect for short hops around town and making journeys to work or college efficient, quiet and emission-free, the EM1 e: syncs neatly with modern expectations for urban mobility.

Model Overview

The majority of the EM1 e: is conventional: steel underbone frame, telescopic forks, twin shock absorbers, and disc front/drum rear braking being traditional moped components. It is small, simple to handle, and offers clean mobility with fresh new appearance.

The electric in-wheel motor and Honda's proprietary Honda Mobile Power Pack e:, which can be removed for convenient home charging with a custom charging station, are what's actually new.

The EM1 e is completely furnished with a digital dash, top-notch switchgear, a spacious floor area, under-seat storage, and a USB charging port. It also features pillion footpegs, rear carrier and side stand for speedy parking.

Styling and equipment

Deliberately shaped to stand apart from its ICE siblings, the EM1 e: is slim and compact, blending a mixture of smooth, organic curves up front with a more angular, purposeful rear section. A 12V battery powers the scooter’s systems and all lighting is LED. A simple digital dash displays all the information that matters concisely, including remaining battery charge percentage.

There’s 3.3L of storage space under the seat, and an inner pocket large enough to store a 500ml PET water bottle can be found on the left side of the fairing front; on the right a USB socket for smartphone charging is a useful feature. There’s also a handy hook to hang a bag from, and grab rails for the pillion passenger.

A rear carrier is also fitted as standard while the pillion footpegs fold neatly into the bodywork when not in use. A useful 35L top box and rear carrier will be available as an optional accessory.

Battery and charger

The EM1 e: is powered by the 50V Honda Mobile Power Pack e:, developed in-house by Honda with the same relentless focus on durability, reliability and quality for which its internal combustion engines have long been known. A single charge will offer a usable riding range of 41.3km or approximately 48.0km in ECON mode under Honda’s internal test conditions (30km in WMTC Class 1 testing conditions) and the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: is designed to withstand different temperatures, humidity levels, impacts and vibrations.
