ast month, Honda UK invited a number of young children to visit the Chiswick Honda dealership. The children were tasked to provide a vehicle review like no other and put the all-new Honda Jazz through its paces. Unlike other reviews this one was focused from the backseats and not the drivers. Here’s what they thought: “Just drive like a crocodile,” instructs four-

NSX: THE ‘TOTAL AIRFLOW MANAGEMENT’ CONCEPT
onda’s Thomas Ramsay Lifts the lid on NSX ‘Total Airflotw Management’ Concept ensuring highly effective thermal management for multiple heat sources Specifically created to bring a ‘New Sports eXperience’ to the supercar segment, the new Honda NSX challenges the status quo, just as the first-generation NSX did so comprehensively over a quarter of a century ago.
Balancing downforce for optimal performance The front-to-rear balance of downforce generated by the NSX’s exterior design was carefully tuned. An exhaustive research and development programme determined that generating approximately three times as much downforce at the rear relative to the front of the car would provide the optimal downforce distribution for high-performance and day-to-day driving.
Insights from Thomas Ramsay, NSX Aerodynamics and Cooling Project Leader “In many ways, with the design of the all-new Honda NSX, you literally have form following function, so this was a really exciting vehicle to work on as an aerodynamicist,” says Thomas Ramsay, the Aerodynamics and Cooling Project Leader on the new Honda supercar. With the interrelated objectives of superior downforce and efficient cooling, Ramsay and his team sought to extract maximum benefit from the flow of air around and through the all-new NSX. Using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations and testing of 40 per cent scale models in Honda’s advanced wind tunnel facility in Ohio, the development team optimised the intricate body shapes.
Thermal management As part of the total airflow management approach, the NSX’s exterior design also provides highly efficient thermal management required by its hybrid powertrain. There are seven different primary heat sources – the 3.5-litre V6 engine, two turbochargers, the nine-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), the Power Distribution Unit and the two motors within the Twin Motor Unit. To provide efficient cooling to each of these elements, airflow is managed through 10 different heat exchangers.

which provides Independent drive force to each front wheel meaning the NSX from active all-wheel drive. The character of the NSX’s dynamic performance can be tailored to preference thanks to the Integrated Dynamics System (IDS). Four selectable modes; Quiet, Sport, Sport+ and Track work by adjusting the steering, brakes, throttle, active damper, intake and exhaust depending on which one is selected.
A vivid and intuitive driving experience is achieved through advanced design, engineering fundamentals and advanced technology to allow the NSX to respond directly to the driver’s demands, whether accelerating, braking or turning. “Our engineers explored new technologies to create a car that redefines supercar performance, delivering a vivid and intuitive experience that places the driver at its centre,” said Ted Klaus, chief engineer and global development leader of the new NSX. “As a result, the NSX epitomises the new sports experience, delivering classleading performance with instant acceleration and exhilarating, confidence-inspiring driving dynamics.”
Body Structure The Honda engineers had to create an optimal platform in order to supplement the vehicle’s advanced power unit. They employed worldfirst engineering and production techniques for the multi-material body to provide class-leading structural rigidity that supports the handling, visibility, safety, durability and reliability of the NSX. The result of the advanced engineering methods are a body with twice the rigidity of its nearest competitor in both dynamic and static torsional stiffness. The rigid chassis working in conjunction with the advanced power unit-translates the driver inputs (steer, brake, and throttle) with incredible precision and fidelity-enhancing driver confidence and delivering a new sports experience.
The Power Unit The Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-WheelDrive (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD) power unit is the first-of-its-kind in the supercar market, and delivers virtually zero-delay performance. At the heart of the power unit is a mid-mounted twinturbocharged 3.5-litre V6 gasoline engine, mated to an all-new nine-speed dual clutch transmission (9DCT) and a Direct Drive Motor. This is enhanced by the front-mounted Twin Motor Unit (TMU),

READ THE FULL CHILD SEAT BELT SAFETY GUIDE
CH IL D S E A T BE L T It was ‘Child Safety Week’ last month so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to take you through some of the dos and don’ts of seat belt safety for children. minicabs- If a child seat isn’t available, children under the age of three must travel in the rear seats, but may be unrestrained.
All children must use the correct child car seat for their weight until they reach either 135cm or their 12th Birthday — whichever’s first According to Effectiveness of belt positioning booster seats: an updated assessment, “Using a child car seat reduces the risk of serious injury by 45% for children aged four to eight years old when compared with seat belt use alone.” If a child is not using the correct seat, the driver of the vehicle can be fined up to £500.
Kids under three aren’t allowed to travel in classic cars without seat belts Almost all Cars, Vans and Lorries have seat belts — with a few exceptions. Not all classic cars have seat belts. So if you’re lucky enough to own a priceless piece of automotive history, bad news: kids under three aren’t allowed to travel in your car. Children over three are good to go, but only in the back seats
Only EU-approved child seats can be used in the UK Legal child seats will have a label with a capital ‘E’ in the circle. If the label is not there you should get a new seat.
The driver of the car is responsible for ensuring that all passengers aged 12 and under are wearing their seat belts correctly However, passengers aged 14 and over are responsible for their own safety. According to research from Think! Road Safety, “Passengers aged 17-34 have the lowest seatbelt-wearing rates combined with the highest accident rate”, so even though passengers over 14 are technically “responsible”, it’s always a good idea to doublecheck. After all, you can never be too careful. Unless your child has a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing’ from a doctor, they must wear a seat belt No excuses! And last but not least, here’s a handy checklist for ensuring that a child’s seatbelt is secured correctly, courtesy of ROSPA: The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. • The belt should be worn as tight as possible, with no slack. • The lap belt should go over the pelvic region, not the stomach. • The diagonal strap should rest over the shoulder, not the neck. • Nothing should obstruct the smooth movement of the belt by trapping it.
Never use a rear-facing child car seat on a passenger seat where an active passenger airbag is fitted In the event of a crash, the airbag will expand at a rate of 160mph and cause severe injury or death due to the seat’s proximity. However the airbag can be left active for forward facing seats, but only if: • Car’s handbooks says it’s safe • You move the car’s seat as far back as possible. Only use a child seat if your car’s seat belt has a diagonal strap Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that diagonal seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by approximately 50%, so don’t forget to buckle up. In case of emergency, children over the age of three can travel in the rear of a car using an adult seat belt. This does mean emergency and not a late school run.
