THE ESSENTIAL
READ THE FULL CHILD SEAT BELT SAFETY GUIDE
CH IL D S E A T BE L T It was ‘Child Safety Week’ last month so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to take you through some of the dos and don’ts of seat belt safety for children. minicabs- If a child seat isn’t available, children under the age of three must travel in the rear seats, but may be unrestrained.
All children must use the correct child car seat for their weight until they reach either 135cm or their 12th Birthday — whichever’s first According to Effectiveness of belt positioning booster seats: an updated assessment, “Using a child car seat reduces the risk of serious injury by 45% for children aged four to eight years old when compared with seat belt use alone.” If a child is not using the correct seat, the driver of the vehicle can be fined up to £500.
Kids under three aren’t allowed to travel in classic cars without seat belts Almost all Cars, Vans and Lorries have seat belts — with a few exceptions. Not all classic cars have seat belts. So if you’re lucky enough to own a priceless piece of automotive history, bad news: kids under three aren’t allowed to travel in your car. Children over three are good to go, but only in the back seats
Only EU-approved child seats can be used in the UK Legal child seats will have a label with a capital ‘E’ in the circle. If the label is not there you should get a new seat.
The driver of the car is responsible for ensuring that all passengers aged 12 and under are wearing their seat belts correctly However, passengers aged 14 and over are responsible for their own safety. According to research from Think! Road Safety, “Passengers aged 17-34 have the lowest seatbelt-wearing rates combined with the highest accident rate”, so even though passengers over 14 are technically “responsible”, it’s always a good idea to doublecheck. After all, you can never be too careful. Unless your child has a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing’ from a doctor, they must wear a seat belt No excuses! And last but not least, here’s a handy checklist for ensuring that a child’s seatbelt is secured correctly, courtesy of ROSPA: The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. • The belt should be worn as tight as possible, with no slack. • The lap belt should go over the pelvic region, not the stomach. • The diagonal strap should rest over the shoulder, not the neck. • Nothing should obstruct the smooth movement of the belt by trapping it.
Never use a rear-facing child car seat on a passenger seat where an active passenger airbag is fitted In the event of a crash, the airbag will expand at a rate of 160mph and cause severe injury or death due to the seat’s proximity. However the airbag can be left active for forward facing seats, but only if: • Car’s handbooks says it’s safe • You move the car’s seat as far back as possible. Only use a child seat if your car’s seat belt has a diagonal strap Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that diagonal seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by approximately 50%, so don’t forget to buckle up. In case of emergency, children over the age of three can travel in the rear of a car using an adult seat belt. This does mean emergency and not a late school run. currently manufactured in 4 plants- Hofu (Japan), Changan (China), AutoAlliance (Thailand) and Mexico. The vehicle is also assembled in Malaysia and Vietnam. Since the first generation, the main goal of the Mazda3 is to exceed expectations, this has been achieved through a dynamic design, responsive driving to increase enjoyment and reducing ownership costs. The current generation, launched in 2013 with two options; hatchback and fastback, both were re-designed from the ground up with an award-winning KODO: Soul of Motion exterior. t the end of April, Mazda achieved the milestone of producing 5 million Mazda3 units, 12 years and 10 months after the company began manufacturing the first generating in 2003. The Mazda3 is only the second Mazda to reach the figure after the Mazda Familia, which was built from 1963 to 2003 and was known as the Mazda 323 in Europe. Europe has found home to 700,000 of the total figure. The cumulative top seller in Mazda’s current line-up accounted for roughly one-third of global sales during the 2014-15 fiscal year. G-Vectoring Tech
Mazda has announced a new technology to improve comfort, stability and grip. The new engine control technology is called G-Vectoring Control and a number of different press teams have been trying out the technology in France. CLICK HERE TO READ THIS ARTICLE ONLINE
car to the front wheels to improve turn-in, this allows the load to move to the back as the driver accelerates away, thus improving stability. Chassis platform manager Alexander Fritsche described the system as “simple in theory, but complex to implement,” as the torque control needs to be done instantly. Mazda’s latest range of Skyactiv engines and chassis were the only units able to support the system, which has actually been in development for around six years. Unlike torque vectoring, the GVC system increases grip rather than the amount of wheel rotation- but the key difference is it can be fitted using only engine software and sensors. Updates will begin in the summer, but it hasn’t been confirmed by Mazda which car will be getting the new system first.
The system works by limiting the torque from the engine to create a smooth transition between G-Forces. It works all the time by measuring steering wheel movements every 5 milliseconds and benefits driving on both straight roads and during cornering. Toru Yoshioka, Integrated Control System Manager: “This system encourages the driver to operate the vehicle like an expert driver.” It does so by optimising the vertical load on different corners of the car, in the same way a racing driver would modulate their throttle input during cornering. The advance computers work at such a speed to be as accurate as a race-driver. The system works when cornering by limiting torque by up to 30Nm to shift the load of the 8

Lethworth spinning!
On the 24th June Norton Way Group held a fundraising day to support the British Paralympic Association, this was to help Nissan’s commitment to Paralympics GB on their road to Rio.
Nissan, who is amongst one of the brand within our Norton Way Group, is the Official Automotive partner of British Paralympic Association and as part of the Heartbeat of Britain campaign our day aimed to supercharge ParalympicsGB athletes in their preparation for the Rio 2016 Games. At the last Games, the support of the nation inspired ParalympicsGB to give the performance of their lives, helping to make the London 2012 Games their most successful yet. On the day we raised a total of £348.25 and these funds will help make the team the strongest it can be ahead of Rio 2016. Their success can achieve the BPA’s wider charitable vision to challenge perceptions and inspire a better world for disabled people.
