MX-5 NAMED UK C The MX-5’s success has continued after taking triple honours in the 2016 UK Car of the Year Awards, including claiming the overall Car of the Year accolade. The awards were judged by 27 of Britain’s leading automotive journalists with road tests carried out on British roads.

he Car of the Year title adds to the MX-5’s already impressive trophy cabinet which includes 2016 What Car Awards Best Convertible, 2015 Auto Express Awards Best Roadster and 2015 Scottish Car of the Year Best Drop Top. CLICK HERE TO READ THE ARTICLE ONLINE
So why is it an award winner? Well the new vehicle has maintained the driver-focused ethos that lead to the MX-5 being the best-selling two-seater sports car of all time. It continues the characteristics of being agile, fun and engaging, whilst at the same time meeting ever-increasing safety and efficiency requirements alongside improved refinement. Commenting on the MX-5, UK Car of the Year judge, John Challen said “With the latest MX-5, Mazda has created the perfect roadster. A lightweight engaging, simplistic and even practical vehicle, which is an absolute pleasure to drive. Fellow judge Mat Joy added, “27 years on and still no-one has

come close to rivalling what is seemingly a straight forward recipe. Light, compact and simple, driving the MX-5 makes you wonder why anyone would consider anything else. All sports cars should drive like this.” While Paul Hudson succinctly commented, “the MX-5 is simply right for most people, most of the time.” There was more success for Mazda at the awards, with the all-new Mazda2 being victorious in the hotly contested Best Supermini category. It received the award after being hugely fun to drive, but not at the expense of affordable running costs or practicality. FIRST PEAK AT THE 2O17
CX-4
Mazda’s sporty new CX-4 coupe crossover is set to make its first appearance at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show later in April.
The new model will be largely based around the Koeru concept that was on show in last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Mazda has a recent history of keeping the styling of its production models very similar to the concepts, so we expect to see something very similar. Other rumours around the model are that it will feature front or four-wheel drive options, in a mix of engines from Mazda’s SkyActiv range. The model is expected to be available to purchase in the first half of 2017. We will keep you up to date with the latest news on the CX-4, so stay tuned with us for more.
The CX-4 will be a coupe SUV that is designed to be a more style focused stablemate to the successful CX-5. It will be set on the same chassis and underpinnings, but will feature a more stylish roofline and rumours have hinted that the vehicle could feature a third row of pop-up seating allowing two children to sit behind five adults. 6

MX-5 RF Revealed
CLICK HERE TO READ THIS ARTICLE ONLINE
Mazda has revealed a brand new version of the MX-5 at the New York International Auto Show, labelled as the MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback). The latest version of the legendary sports car offers a new dimension of open-top driving, whilst making the roadster experience accessible to a broader range of drivers.
Mazda has broken convention from previous retractable hardtop MX-5s by featuring entirely new fastback styling with a smooth roofline that slopes down to the rear. The power roof will open and close with a press of a button, and work with speeds of up to 10km/h. The RF version will feature the same amount of boot space as the soft-top model. A choice of two petrol engines will be available- SKYACTIV-G 1.5 and SKYACTIV-G 2.0, mated either to a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT gearbox or exclusively for the MX-5 RF- a sixspeed automatic.
1o things you should know about the Mazda MX-5 RF 1. When does all-new Mazda MX-5 RF launch? The RF will launch in 2017.
2. Where is it going to be produced?
It will be produced at Ujina1 in Japan, where the soft-top model is produced.
3. What is fastback styling?
Fastback styling features a smooth roofline that slopes down to the rear. Mazda has adopted this because it represents an open-top car with a hardtop roof that offers beauty and stylish design.
4. What are the performance figures?
The RF has been developed with the same power and torque as the soft-top: 8
N O R T O N WAY M A Z D A • I S S U E 1 8 • A P R 2 0 1 6
maximum output 2.0L / 6MT & 6AT - 160ps @ 6,000rpm 1.5L / 6MT - 131ps @ 7,000rpm
maximum torque 2.0L / 6MT & 6AT - 200Nm @ 4,600rpm 1.5L / 6MT - 150Nm @ 4,800rpm
5. How does the roof work?
The front roof, middle roof and back window glass are stowed, leaving the rear roof in place. The top lock of the RF is fully electrically operated (whereas the previous generation RHT was manual).
6. What impact does the roof have on boot space? No impact on boot space. The roof and back window are stowed in the cabin, so the boot has 130-litres of volume, which is the same as the soft-top model.
7. How long does it take to open/close the roof? Specific figures are not available as it is still under development. However, Mazda are aiming for around 12 seconds, similar to the previous model.
8. What are the dimensions of the allnew MX-5 RF, is it as compact as the soft-top?
The dimensions are the same as the soft-top except for the height, which is 5mm taller due to the hardtop roof.
9. How many exterior colours are available?
There will be 7 colours available to choose from, including a brand new colour of Machine Grey: Soul Red Metallic, Ceramic Metallic, Blue Reflex Mica, Crystal White Pearlescent, Jet Black Mica and Arctic White (solid)
10. Is it still a lightweight sports car?
Despite the weight increase of the roof, the RF still provides the agile driving experience that has made the MX-5 so famous, and can therefore still be referred to as a lightweight sports car.
