ANOTHER AWARD FO We are pleased to announce that the Mazda MX-5 has won yet another award, but we think this one is the best yet. Last month, the all-new Mazda MX-5 was named both the 2016 World Car of the Year and the World Car Design of the Year. It is the second Mazda to win the award, following the Mazda2 in 2008, and the first model to win both titles in the history of the awards.
W
orld Car of the Year was established in 2004 by an international group of automotive journalists, and the judging panel this year consisted of 73 journalists from 23 different countries. The event took place at the New York International Auto Show on March 24th. Other finalists for the award included the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Jaguar XE and Mazda CX-3.
“What a wonderful honour, to have the Mazda MX-5 named both World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year,” said Masahiro Moro, President and CEO, Mazda North American Operations, and Managing Executive Officer, Mazda Motor Corporation. “As our iconic MX-5 roadster approaches one-million units of production, this award is proof that it is as young, vibrant, fun and relevant as ever, and proof that every Mazda looks as incredible as it drives, and drives as incredibly as it looks.” 4

The gram strategy:
How saving weight makes Mazdas better to drive Mazda main priority when producing a new vehicle is to create a car that inspires their drivers. One way they achieve this is through what they call the Gram Strategy, this is a method to shave weight from every component of every car.
everything together to make it as efficient as possible. Mazda’s view is even though they might be more expensive materials such as magnesium or aluminium to save weight; considering every component to produce a lighter car ends up saving money in the long run. A vital part of this is the communication between Mazda’s research and development team with the production staff from the beginning and into every stage of the car’s development. It means ideas can be put into the drawings from the start, which frequently contributes to cost and weight savings. Mazda a number of years ago did an experiment, to see if one engineer in charge of saving weight would make a difference but this
azda’s Vice President of European R&D, Kenichiro Saruwatari has revealed all about it. He outlines the key to making Mazda’s cars fun to drive was to make them lighter. That means a more nimble vehicle with reduced tyre wear, better fuel economy and less impact on the road surface. Kenichiro joined Mazda in 1987 and he said the process was in place then. But now weight saving in cars is even more important so the Gram Strategy and it has built momentum over recent years. A recent change in Mazda’s thought process has made a big difference, by now considering a car as a complete entity. In the past, they would carry over some parts from an outgoing model, but now Mazda revises

didn’t work. They found that’s it was better to get people to think of things as whole rather than just focusing on one area. Kenichiro explained one side-effect is having different departments working on the same thing. It breaks down barriers within the company and that can lead to a lot of arguments, Kenichiro believes that is a positive thing though.
All these changes to Mazda ranges makes Mazda’s cars pleasurable to drive. Experience it for yourself at Norton Way Mazda by test driving one of the range. Interesting Fact: The Mazda range is the youngest line up of cars in the UK.
His highlighted examples of the current range are: • MX-5 Transmission: smooth casing instead of a lipped style has saved weight • Seat Adjusting Lever: Very thin and very simple again saving unnecessary weight • Drivetrain Dynamic Dampers: Mazda changed the die cast of the bolts to reduce weight, it’s only a tiny amount but every little bit is a real benefit to Mazda drivers.
