Mazda CX-5

One of the very best crossovers you can buy, the Mazda CX-5 is well made, really enjoyable to drive and good-looking too. Recent upgrades have improved the interior ambience and upped the technology levels so it’s now on a par with rivals.

ENGINE, PERFORMANCE AND DRIVE (4 STARS)

Mazda have modelled the CX-5’s driving dynamics on those of its evergreen MX-5 roadster, and while a high-riding SUV is never going to match a two-seater sportscar, there’s more shared DNA than you’d think. In fact, the CX-5 it’s one of the most involving choices in its class. The steering is fluid, accurate, and full of feedback, while the suspension manages to soak up bumps without the trade-off of body roll in corners. The best test of this crossover’s abilities is to drive one on an unfamiliar back road in bad weather - the sheer balance and poise on offer ensures the CX-5 inspires confidence behind the wheel like no rival.

MPG, CO2 AND RUNNING COSTS (4 STARS)

The whole point of Mazda’s SkyActiv programme was to make its cars as light and as strong as possible, and its engines as frugal as they could be, all in the pursuit of lower emissions and improved economy, as well as decent dynamics. Our experts predict that it will retain around 46 per cent of its value after three years, which puts the car ahead of rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V, Ford Kuga and even the old-shape BMW X1.

INTERIOR, DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (4 STARS) and Twitter integration, plus internet radio streaming and DAB. You can even set it up to read out and respond to text messages on your mobile phone.

Critics of the interior design of the CX-5 think it looks a little too dark and gloomy, while fans praise the high-quality fixtures and fittings and call the layout classy. The new set-up comes with satellite navigation as standard on all models, and the update brings Facebook

RELIABILITY AND SAFETY (5 STARS)

Buyers should certainly have no worries on the safety front. The CX-5 was awarded a five-star crash test rating by Euro NCAP, which included an impressive score of 94 per cent for adult occupant protection. Mazda has also been one of the pioneers of fitting camera and radar-based braking systems, which respond automatically when they detect cars or pedestrians.

MAZDA2 WINS FLEET WORLD MPG MARATHON 2016  CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION The Mazda2 has beaten tough competition to win the ALD Automotive Fleet World MPG Marathon, achieving an average of 91.37 miles per gallon over two days of driving, using less than half a tank over the 406 mile course. Driven by MPG Marathon regular John Kerswill with Ian McKeen as co-driver, the Mazda2 1.5 diesel completed the distance in 12 hours at an average speed of 33.83mph using just 20.2 litres of fuel. “This was an exceptionally tough event,” commented John Kerswill. “There were lots of steep climbs, heavy traffic and head winds on the route so genuinely reflective of UK road conditions. To achieve 91.4mpg was really impressive and a tribute to the Mazda2’s outstanding real world fuel economy.” “One small detail that impressed me is that the car was even more economical than it said it was. At the end of the event the trip computer was showing 90.0mpg, but the accurately calculated figure based on actual fuel used was 91.4mpg.” With prices starting at £12,495 the Mazda2 1.5 diesel official fuel consumption is 83.1mpg on the combined cycle, at 91.4mpg a 10 per cent

improvement was achieved over the official figure. “This MPG Marathon result, improving on the official mpg figure, is a great demonstration of the Mazda2’s fuel-stretching abilities,” said Peter Allibon, Mazda UK Sales Director. “With a design that offers great kerbside appeal and driving dynamics that make this car great fun to drive, owners can have a car that looks great, handles fantastically and is really affordable to drive.” Combining Mazda’s unique SKYACTIV technology with its striking KODO: Soul of Motion design philosophy, the Mazda2 brought new levels of technological sophistication, driving pleasure and active safety to the highly competitive B-segment when it went on sale in the UK in March 2015. Offering a choice of eight petrol and two diesel variants, the 10-strong line-up of Mazda’s best-selling UK model is priced from £12,495 to £16,095 on-the-road (OTR). 4

MAZDA IMPRESSES WITH MX-5 SPEEDSTER AND THE MX-5 RF KURO HERE TO READ THIS  CLICK ARTICLE ONLINE

MX-5 RF Kuro - painted Satin Black Metallic

M

azda North American Operations (MNAO) is no stranger to the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, providing its designers the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild to create some truly stunning dream cars. This year proved no different with two new concepts: the lighter, more ruthlessly efficient MX-5 Miata Speedster Evolution and the stealthlike MX-5 RF Kuro, based on the 2017 MX-5 RF retractable fastback that will be going on sale in 2017. MX-5 Speedster debuted at the 2015 SEMA Show as an ode to the lightweight, frills-free, pure driving experience of 1950s sports cars. Weighing just 2,080 lbs., MX-5 Speedster’s 150-lb. weight 6

loss—an 11-percent reduction versus a stock MX-5 soft top—propelled its performance and elevated the open-air experience for which the roadster is known. Following last year’s SEMA Show, MX-5 Speedster spent the summer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K., where it ran the 1.16-mile hill climb. MX-5 Speedster then returned to Mazda Design Americas, where the Irvine, California-based team that created it experimented to see just how much lighter they could make their project. Its 25.1-lbs. stock battery was replaced with a Braille GreenLite G20 Lithium battery that weighs just 4.5 lbs. Painted White Ether, MX-5 Evolution further hones Mazda’s performance heritage,

complete with the adjustable suspension from the MX-5 Global Cup racecar and BFGoodrich g-Force Rival R1 grooved racing slick tires, sized 225/45R17— the same model of tire used as the race cars competing in the Battery Tender Mazda Global MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires. “With MX-5 Speedster Evolution, our goal was to further deliver the essence of what MX-5 has represented for the past 27 years—lightweight engineering and pure driving joy,” said Saward, who also owns and races a Spec Miata. Joining MX-5 Speedster Evolution on the Mazda stand is a new concept based on the 2017 MX-5 RF that will be going on sale early next year. Called MX-5 RF Kuro, it is a car that also adopts much of the MX-5 Global Cup

technology but in a much more street-focused package. MX-5 RF Kuro also shares its adjustable suspension with the MX-5 Global Cup racecar as well as its Brembo dual-piston front brake calipers. It is painted Satin Black Metallic, a semi-matte black metallic color. “We wanted to give MX-5 RF Kuro a stealth look to complement its sleek profile, providing subtlety and purpose,” said Saward. “As we move our brand in a direction we call ‘Mazda Premium,’ we want to embrace our longstanding motorsports heritage and reach forward with breathtaking designs like the MX-5 RF.”

7 REASONS TO BUY A WhatCar? Have recently reviewed the Mazda 2 and have come up with 7 reasons that make it stand out amongst its rivals. Here’s what they thought:

1

Running Costs

3

While others such as the Hyundai i20 and Skoda Fabia might offer cheaper running costs still, the Mazda 2 has competitive C02 emissions – the diesel emits just 89k/km CO2 – and returned more than 50mpg in recent True MPG real-world fuel economy testing.

2

Equipment

Entry-level spec cars are a little too basic, but next up SE-L trim is altogether more generous, with alloy wheels, electric windows all-round, cruise control and leather trim; it’s our preferred pick.

Safety/ Security

4

A decent amount of safety kit comes as standard on the 2; six airbags, traction control, hill hold control and tyre pressure monitoring are among the highlights. Opt for an SE-L trim car or above and you get automatic city braking as standard.

Driving Position

There’s a good adjustment range on the 2’s interior, including on the steering wheel and height adjustment on the driver’s seat. Overall, it’s on par with rivals in terms of comfort behind the wheel.

A MAZDA2

5

Performance

7

All of the engines in the Mazda 2 range are 1.5 litres, but the 89bhp petrol motor in the 90PS Skyactiv-G is the pick of the bunch. It’s a popular choice, and providing you’re not scared of a few revs, is nippy enough to manage with everyday travel.

6

Reliability

Mazda’s strong suit is its reliability record – the previous-generation Mazda 2 finished first in a total of 22 small cars for reliability, and Mazda placed fourth overall from 37 manufacturers in our What Car? Reliability Survey.

Infotainment

If you go for the SE-L spec – which we strongly advise – you get a nearclass-leading infotainment system, with a 7.0in touchscreen and rotary controller. It’s easy to navigate and intuitive, meaning you won’t get lost trying to navigate menus.
