in the crossover segment with new versions of the Nissan Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail. The company has also been breaking records with its line-up of electric vehicles including the fantastic Leaf. Nissan unveiled the latest version of the bestselling electric vehicle in the world, the Nissan LEAF. The new model now provides drivers with 155 miles of motoring range, beating all competitors in the industry. Paul Willcox, Chairman of Nissan Europe said: “This year we are proud to be celebrating the 5th birthday of the Nissan LEAF and the new LEAF 30kWh offers customers even more flexibility. The Nissan LEAF has sold 185,000 units globally and with over 92 per cent customer satisfaction rate, the LEAF remains the best-selling electric car. We couldn’t have achieved this remarkable success without the support of our employees, customers, dealers, partners and suppliers so this really is a historic moment for everyone connected to the Nissan business.” Paul Willcox added: “Nissan’s commitment

THE W SECRET BEHIND NISSAN’S CROSSOVER TESTING

ant to know how Nissan test their uber successful crossovers? You might be surprised. The seemingly bizarre objects used by Nissan to test its crossovers are revealed for the first time. But before we reveal the surprise here are some testing facts: • Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail have been run in excess of 2.4 million kms* (based on 3 Qashqai’s, 2 Jukes and an X-Trail) to test suspension alone - the equivalent of almost 60 trips around the world – yes that’s true. • Car doors closed 1.2 million times and bonnets lifted 48,000* times to ensure quality and durability! These tests might surprise you! Singer Mariah Carey might not know it, but she plays a crucial role in the development of every Nissan Crossover. However, she doesn’t take all the limelight, so do a brown bear and a selection of cups and bottles from around the world. For the first time, Crossover market-leader Nissan is revealing the extreme measures it uses

to test its new cars - including the X-Trail, Juke and the recordbreaking Qashqai (New Qashqai recently celebrated its 500,000th production milestone, achieving this feat in just 21 months and becoming the fastest ever UK built car to reach this figure). The rigorous engineering approach aims to replicate the real-life and sometimes arduous usage that the vehicles experience in everyday situations. Since the first Crossover was conceived in 2007, Nissan has conducted more than 150,000 tests across the Crossover range. These include some of the following surprising tests. They use special robots to open and close the windows at least 30,000 times per model, while using specific volcanic dust imported from Japan to test against scratching and ensure durable functioning of the electric window mechanism. These robots also activate the windscreen wipers for 480 hours at different speeds and settings, as well as in simulated varied weather conditions. They deploy the indicators right and left 2.25 million times on every model! Now this where Mariah Carey comes in; playing the stereo at high volume for a total of 1,200 days (that’s 1,728,000 minutes) using specifically selected music tracks to encompass the widest range of pitch and beat. These include Mariah Carey for the high notes and the thumping bass of German House music. Wow. Think a soft toy couldn’t possibly be a part of their stringent testing, well think again. They drop weights to ensuring the glass roof can withstand the weight of a brown bear climbing on the car. To really top it all

off they use a host of different cups, bottles and containers to check the usefulness of the cup holders and door pockets. Such is the dedication to perfection that engineers even decided to redesign the front door pocket of the Qashqai when it emerged that the new bottle of a popular brand of Japanese Green Tea would not fit without being slightly squeezed. Rather than risk customer dissatisfaction the design was modified at a cost of more than €50,000! The same engineers and their ingenious robot helpers have also opened the bonnets of its Crossovers collectively more than 48,000 times and the doors an astounding 1.2 million times. This may seem extreme, but it has to exceed the anticipated usage of these parts by customers during the cars’ lifetime. David Moss, Senior VicePresident at Nissan Europe Technical Centre said, “Some of the devices we have created and instruments we use might make us look like mad inventors. But they are all there to make sure that Nissan’s range of Crossovers are thoroughly tested to meet the needs of our customers - and will continue to do so for years to come” It’s a strategy which is clearly working. Last year, Nissan Crossover sales exceeded 400,000 in Europe delivering a combined market share of 12.7%. Fascinated? So you should be, come and test it out for yourself, why not bring your favourite water bottle and see if it fits! At Norton Way Nissan we may not be mad inventors but we sure do love your crossovers and we know you will too.

TEATRO FOR DAYZ CONCEPT REVEALED CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL ARTICLE ON THE NISSAN TEATRO FOR DAYZ CONCEPT

Have you heard about it yet? It’s a lunchtime topic here at Norton Way Nissan. Nissan are exhibiting a brand new concept call Teatro for Dayz at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. The idea behind the concept is to design a car specifically for the generation known as “digital natives.” We’re sure you will agree this vehicle is an out-of-the-box concept that truly defies convention and rejects restrictions. It’s automotive design that supports sharing ideas and experiences. Nissan have decided to use a clean canvas for this concept, and the idea of the vehicle to being able to freely create and share experiences. The car will allow people to share own experiences, connect with friends, display an attitude and freely share them. “Designing a car to appeal to the generation we call ‘share natives’ required us to intentionally not use knowledge and tried-and-true approaches we had amassed,” says Executive Design Director Satoshi Tai. “For example, through design we typically try to convey a sense of acceleration, power, or supreme quality. But these values do not resonate with share natives. If anything, such car traits just call to mind old-fashioned technology that bears little relevance to their lives.” Nissan has surveyed this generation extensively. Nissan’s Product Planning General Manager Hidemi Sasaki says: “Share natives

feel that time spent in a car should be time for connecting and sharing experiences with friends. We can no longer attract their attention with the same old values.”

The interior of tomorrow The first reaction to Teatro for Dayz is, “Is this really a car?” After all, all you see inside the interior are solid white seats, a steering wheel and two pedals. Instead it is a “Future Canvas” interior concept: • The vehicles appearance can transform: Image display technology supports this concept turning seats, headrests, door trim and the instrument panel into a moving screen. • Voice Control and motion sensors for air conditioning and audio system • Removal of conventional knobs and switches, instead a flat instrument panel. In drive mode, meters and car navigation data are displayed on the instrument panel. When parked, it all disappears. • Seats have bases that resemble balance balls feel radically different from the usual grip of a car seat, further signaling a departure from the conventional. Exterior design: “Digital device” Nissan made another unexpected turn with the exterior design. They have kept the Nissan signature V motion grill and headlamps but dropped the usual traits of speed, size and elegance and have opted for a design that resembles leading technology and expresses creativity. Teatro for Dayz’s simple, square design maximizes possibilities for communicating and sharing, both inside and out. The wide, open interior provides the perfect space for friends to gather, while the plain exterior features LED screens that enable further self-expression. This unique concept was born from the hearts and minds of tomorrow’s drivers and it allows us to enjoy cars in a way could never have imagined before. At Norton Way Nissan we have been trying to image this car and it has been fun, we think it will be fantastic if it does go into production. But first we must wait for the concept, watch this space.

NEW LEAF WITH 155 MILE RANGE The Leaf is always at the forefront of our minds in our Letchworth dealership because since its introduction it never fails to excite or surprise us, but yet again it strikes.

Commented Paul Willcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe: “The LEAF, the best-selling EV in the world, just got even better. And up-to 155 miles opens the world of EV to thousands of drivers across Europe who before just weren’t completely confident that an EV would work for them. This extra range will make LEAF ownership an easy first choice, for many, many more drivers.”

issan is once again transforming the performance, practicality and perception of EVs with the introduction of the LEAF 30 kWh an updated Nissan LEAF that gives drivers 155 miles of motoring range, beating all of its competitors in the segment. This remarkable achievement - one that opens up a new world of opportunity for drivers - is made possible thanks to the introduction of a new 30kWh battery. The new battery is the highlight of an update package that will see the 2016MY LEAF 30 kWh reinforce its position as the most capable and practical electric vehicle in the world, and with the best value. The longer range significantly broadens the LEAF’s appeal - making it a true alternative to an internal combustion engine vehicle for thousands of motorists and reinforcing its position as the world’s best electric car.

N

New battery, new technology, same simple usability The LEAF’s new 30kWh battery delivers a longer range with no compromise on internal packaging. Available on Acenta and Tekna trim grades, it has exactly the same exterior dimensions as existing 24kWh unit and only a modest 21 kg increase in weight. The result? A car that goes significantly further while offering the same practicality and usability as previous versions. 8

Key to the new battery’s higher performance is an update to its internal design and chemistry. The introduction of Carbon, Nitrogen and Magnesium to the electrodes improves performance, while the change to the cell layout also contributes to the gain.

LEAF 30 kWh - the world’s favourite EV made even better All Acenta and Tekna 2016MY LEAF models are equipped with the latest evolution of the brand’s acclaimed NissanConnect EV infotainment system. Featuring a new interface and digital radio receiver, it also offers a capacitive 7-inch touchscreen that allows owners to zoom in and out of maps and flick between menus just by moving their fingers on the screen.

New IT technology gives owners even greater control One of the LEAF’s most celebrated and useful features is its ability to interact with and be controlled remotely by its owner via NissanConnect EV.
