SEMI-AUTONOMOUS

NEXT GEN LEAF TO BE SEMI-AUTONOMOUS HERE FOR MORE  CLICK INFORMATION

Nissan’s autonomous car drive has gained significant momentum at the CES show in Las Vegas. Nissan has put a timeline to its plans, and confirmed the MkII Leaf – due in the next year or two – will get semiautonomous functionality as standard. Nissan has also collaborated with Nasa to help develop something called SAM (Seamless Autonomous Mobility) that means proper selfdriving vehicles – taxis and vans with no drivers in them at all – won’t be completely stranded when an accident or construction work ahead of them blocks the road. The idea is that actual humans will monitor the vehicles’ progress – the head of a fleet of autonomous cabs, for example – and if a car gets confused by a road layout, it’ll pause, send its human an alert, and they’ll use its cameras and location to guide it around obstacles and back on track. You might ponder the point of a self-driven car if it can’t entirely drive itself. Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn is fairly bullish about the fact that it’s a long time before our road networks will consist purely of driverless cars. “No matter how much artificial intelligence or algorithms come along, there’ll always be a case where the car gets stuck and needs human intervention,” he says. “In 15 to 20 years maybe we’ll overcome it, but I doubt it. Humans know how to overcome rules but still respect them.” Such high levels of autonomy are many years off yet, of course, and in the interim, Nissan is being pretty careful about how much of its self-driving software it releases. ‘Propilot

1’, the first level of autonomy in Nissans, launched in Japan last year, and sees the Serena people carrier drive itself within a single lane in motorway traffic. It’s also what we’ll see on the new Leaf, which could look like the Nissan IDS concept, pictured above. “We need to make sure customers do not overtrust autonomous cars,” says Nissan engineer Kazuhiro Doi. “When launching Propilot 1 in Japan, we had engineers go to every dealer to educate them, so they could then educate the customers on how to use it,” Doi adds. Nissan’s very serious about the whole thing. It’s even employed anthropologists to study human behaviour so that cars can be taught how to react around pedestrians, and when to yield to other road users. This includes teaching cars to be assertive, so that other drivers don’t take advantage of dithering driverless cars. Like it or not, the technology is firmly on its way. Are you pleased with the prospect? Or do autonomous cars still give you the heebie-jeebies? 2

review Carbuyer review the allnew Nissan Micra

Carbuyer took the all-new Micra for a spin putting it through its paces. Here’s what they had to say about it: The new Micra has made a welcome return to form, shedding its dowdy image to become a fun, stylish and desirable supermini” The Nissan Micra is a name that’s spent time both in the spotlight and in the shadows since the first model with that badge arrived in the UK in the early eighties. A new, curvaceous ‘bubble’-shaped version arrived in 2003, widening the Micra’s appeal somewhat with characterful retro charm. After then, though, the Micra rather lost its way, with the most recent version coming up rather short on visual appeal and quality. Car manufacturers just can’t afford to rest on their laurels in the supermini class and the new Nissan Micra represents the greatest shakeup the model has ever been given. Nissan acknowledged that a clean-sheet approach was really the only way forward and you can see this in the way the car has been styled. It has the ‘floating’ roof that has become de rigueur on trendy small cars, and like the Nissan Juke, the new Micra has its rear door handles concealed in the rear pillars. Disguising the rear doors is a subliminal hint that the new car is about playing hard as well as working every day and the bright colour options mesh very well with the Micra’s fun-loving persona. There’s stacks of new technology, too, with Nissan clearly on a march to attract buyers who are downsizing from more tech-laden cars in the class above, or even further upmarket. Considerable attention has been paid to the way the new Micra drives, too. For a good while the Fiesta and Ibiza have been the cars to beat for sheer driver entertainment and that remains the case. We weren’t expecting it to be such fun to drive, though, and nor were we banking on it being so ‘wantable’. Life just got a whole lot harder for the established frontrunners in the supermini class. The Micra is back. 5

NISSAN'S AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE

FIRST ON-ROAD AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE TO BE TESTED IN EUROPE February 2017 will see Nissan provide on-road demonstrations of autonomous driving cars. The demonstrations will showcase nextgeneration technology, Seamless Autonomous Mobility (SAM), making vehicles smarter, more responsive and better at making decisions in a variety of driving environments. The real-world demonstrations will take place in London, enabling the vehicles and their passengers to cover a diverse city environment. Following recent

announcements of both the refreshed Nissan Qashqai and the new Nissan LEAF, both models (coming soon), will be equipped with autonomous drive technology to enable single lane autonomous driving on motorways. Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark said: "Government and industry are working together to build on our world class reputation for excellence as a leading location for automotive R&D and manufacturing. We want to see centres, like Nissan's here in Cranfield, continue to develop, making us a world leader in the development and testing of auto technology so we can anchor the next generation of vehicle manufacturing and its supply chain here in the UK."

The autonomous vehicle demonstrations will primarily be available in the new LEAF by passengers including government officials and technical and safety experts, giving them the opportunity to experience and test the technology in a live environment. The Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE), is the European Research and Development hub for Nissan. They are developing autonomous drive technologies as well as new advanced fuel, energy and efficiency technologies, in collaboration with the Nissan Technical Centre and Advanced Technical Centre in Japan. Paul Willcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe, said: “Innovation and ingenuity is at the heart of the Nissan brand and its people. We’ve been developing that pioneering spirit for over half a century in Europe and for over 30 years in Britain. With future models secured and cuttingedge innovation being developed right here in the UK, we’re looking forward to a strong future of designing, engineering and manufacturing in the country for customers right across the world.”
