Nissan Sunderland Plant’s 30th anniversary This month marks the 30th anniversary of the official opening of Nissan’s Sunderland plant. Nick Gullon sits down with plant manager Kevin Fitzpatrick to discuss the car maker’s historic past and uncertain future. When Margaret Thatcher opened Nissan’s first European plant, the car maker had 470 staff and was making 5,000 vehicles at a rate of 12 an hour. Fast forward 30 years, the plant has grown to become the largest in the UK, with more than half a million vehicles rolling of its line each year, now at a rate of 117 an hour. The plant employs almost 7,000 people, 117 of which have been there since 1986. “I don’t think anyone realistically thought the plant would grow to one that is making half a million cars a year” said Mr Fitzpatrick. “By the time we got to 1992, the plant is not much different to it is now.” The Nissan plant is now an iconic feature of the Sunderland landscape, but some may be surprised the Japanese company chose a relatively unknown North-East town, as it was, for its first European venture. Not Mr Fitzpatrick. 3

“They wanted to come to the UK. There was competition between the North East, Wales and the Midlands. “The first point was we had access to deep sea ports and were closer to Europe, the second was there was a large, skilled, industrial workforce and the third was the emotional aspect – the North-East made a good job of selling itself.” Nissan’s arrival in the NorthEast coincided with a troubled industrial time. “We transferred the good stuff from Japan and we wanted to get away from the traditional way of running a factory with an approach based on teamwork, engagement and everyone having a role to play. It hasn’t always been so straight forward. When asked about Nissan’s greatest challenges, Mr Fitzpatrick cites the reaction to the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in 2008. “Virtually overnight people stopped buying cars. All of a sudden customers were scared to spend money so didn’t buy anything. It really was as dramatic as that.” READ THE FULL INTERVIEW HERE ONLINE

NISSAN IS GOING GREEN WITH ADBLUE

With all the recent focus on vehicle emissions, we thought it worth flagging something of a positive in the industry: an eco-innovation which isn’t yet commonplace but is gaining ground and has the potential to significantly reduce pollution from diesel engines: AdBlue. CLICK HERE TO READ ONLINE

The new regulation for diesel has taken effect. The new regulations target a hosts of emission s particularly nitrogen oxides(NOx). Your new LCV has been fitted with an advanced emissions control system that meets the latest Euro 6 exhaust gas regulations.

HOW DOES THIS SYSTEM WORK?

Based on simple chemistry, AdBlue is a high purity urea solution which, when combined with the harmful nitrous oxides in the vehicle exhaust gases, reacts to convert around 90% of them to harmless nitrogen and water vapour. It actually enables manufacturers to take a legitimate shortcut to make their diesel engines comply with Euro-6 emission regulations to improve air quality.

KEEP TOPPED UP

AdBlue is stored in its own tank we’ll be pleased to show you where your AdBlue tank is and how to top it up. It is really important that keep your AdBlue levels topped up-if you run out, your vehicle may not start.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

This is a good move for Nissan’s, our efficient engines are now even cleaner if you’d like more information about adding AdBlue-equipped vehicles to your fleet contact us and we’ll be happy to advise on current options and deals. 4

When an ICE blocks a charging space! A term used to describe the fear of running out of battery while driving a pure electric car. Realworld accounts suggest range anxiety isn’t as common as thought, and trials show that anxiety recedes over time as drivers become more comfortable with their cars’ actual range capability

In a domestic setting you will generally have a choice of two charge rate options: • 16A (3.6kW) Approx 8 hour charge* • 32A (7.2kW) Approx 4 hour charge* To future proof your home, a 32A charger is recommended and will in no way harm your 3.3kW vehicle as the car will only charge at a rate that is mutually agreed upon by the car and the charger.

ick-up drivers have another reason to choose the Nissan Navara. The entire range has now switched to a more advanced and eco-friendly Euro 6 Engine. That means the Navara now adds impressive emissions to its already renowned tough attitude, robust performance and award-winning design. The upgrade covers both the 190PS twinturbo and 160PS single turbo versions of the 2.3-litre dCi engine. CO₂ emissions now start as low as 159 g/km and a fuel consumption on the Official Combined Cycle has improved to 46.3mpg. The Euro 6 benefits from a reduction in oxides of nitrogen thanks to the addition of a Selective Catalytic Reduction system. An AdBlue tank has been fitted to the Navara, which allows up to 7,150 miles between refills.

Other enhancements include:

• I dle-Stop System (ISS) for reduced fuel consumption is now standard on all Navara manual models • All Navara models now come with a colour combimeter, cruise control with speed limiter, Bluetooth hands-free audio and multi-function controls on the steering wheel • The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) has increased 25-35 kg, while kerb weight has increased 5-38 kg (both depending on model) • One-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity remain unchanged The improvements to the Navara clearly demonstrate Nissan’s desire to bring advanced technologies to every sector of the market, to make driving more convenient and safer for owners. The Navara is available with Nissan’s pioneering Around View Monitor (AVM) camera system, and with Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) – systems which have proved popular on Nissan’s best-selling range of crossovers, the Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail.power even further. The company says it’s recorded over 225bhp from this combination of components. CLICK HERE TO READ ONLINE

Luna Animal Rescue

In July, sadly Norton Way lost one of our long standing Sales executives Mr Roy Hurwitz. His wonderful personality, and laugh will be greatly missed by all of us here at Norton Way, and sadly this news, also came the fact that Roy left behind two beloved dogs- Teddy and Gypsy, both who needed to be rehomed. At our time of need, a fantastic local charity called Luna literally came to our rescue and helped get Teddy and Gypsy safe and comfortable. This Charity has worked closely with Roy’s family and friends to find new homes for the dogs, and provided the greatest comfort to us all, knowing they were ok.

ABOUT THE CHARITY

Luna Animal Rescue was founded by Louise Jest and Natalie Howe in October 2013. They had both been involved in rescue before and decided to start Luna to help the many UK dogs that find themselves needing to be re-homed. Great Britain is a nation of animal lovers but there are still many unwanted dogs and puppies being left in UK pounds and being euthanised every day, Luna are trying to make a difference by saving these poor dogs on death row and re-homing them as loving family pets. Luna are a voluntary non-profit organisation, with a non-destruct policy ( we will not put down a

healthy well balanced animal), all dogs that are re-homed through the charity have a lifetime of rescue backup, whether it is behavioural issues or a change of circumstances they offer help and guidance. All dogs are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, flea treated and vet checked.

THE CHARITY’S WORK

Luna Animal Rescue became a registered charity in October 2015, and are based in the South East of England. They work together to save dogs in UK pounds and from local people that need to re-home their pets for whatever reason. Norton Way have been raising money for Luna in honour of Roy’s memory, collecting over £510.00 for the Charity so far. We are also happy to let those who knew them that so far Gypsy and Teddy have adapted well and are doing ok!
