Before you use your precious time physically checking the car, pick an app to verify that the car is as described and finance-free. We like Total Car Check because it gives data from a range of credible sources for only £1.89.

Ask us for the V5C. Then, check the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) matches the one under the hood. Gov.uk can also be used to verify the MOT status.

We have already checked, but why not check again. Lift the mats, check the door hinges and under the bonnet, paying special attention to chipped bolts – rust will tell you if the car’s been looked after.

Flat feet can put extra pressure on your knees, and misaligned wheels do the same to cars. Tyres with bald bits can suggest issues with alignment. Check tread with a 20p piece.

Fogs, reverse, interior, headlamps, dash; if it has a switch, go crazy. Are they all on? Hit the switch again and make sure they turn off.

An experienced Honda mechanic says that kicking the tyres is utterly useless. It proves nothing, except suggesting you don’t know what you’re doing.

In the same way Apple computers rarely get viruses, some cars rarely break down (Our cars, for instance). So do some research and use us questions about reliability.

Anyone can conceal a bad odour, but it’s much harder to actually get rid of it. So, check for cigarette burns.

Do it handsfree to check that the mic, speakers and Bluetooth are all working well. Ask her if she can hear you while you’re driving at speed, not just when you’re parked.

With winters becoming notorious for flooding in recent years always check for water damage. Are there odd smells? Do the windows steam up quickly?

NEW CR-V COMING IN 2018

Honda has given an exclusive insight to popular car review site, Auto Express. The site has announced that a new CR-V will be released in 2018. The next-generation model will be bigger than the current model and will focus on a more upmarket experience when it is released. The vehicle has already been spied testing in the US, and early signs are that the vehicle is expected to have a third row of seats, making space for 7 people. The CR-V will share the chassis with the new Civic Hatch, which arrives in the UK next February. The wheelbase on the allnew CV is expected to increase by around 80mm, adding 50mm to the overall length. Changes will also extend to the engine range, Honda has already confirmed new 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre i-VTEC turbos and an upgraded 1.6-litre diesel for the civic, and it is likely the CR-V will benefit from the two larger variants. A hybrid

may also be a possibility due to ever-tightening emissions regulations. The new Honda will be built alongside the HR-V in Japan, launching in the US in 2017 and the UK in early 2018. CLICK HERE TO READ THE ARTICLE ONLINE

£2M GOVERNMENT PLEDGE TOWARDS BUSINESSES BUYING HYDROGEN CARS The government is putting 2 million pounds towards the further development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and plans to triple the number of FCVs on the UK roads by next spring.

“Hydrogen is definitely on the [government’s] agenda; it’s better understood and people understand the environmental benefits of hydrogen cars better than they ever have, but certainly more could be done.”

The money pledged by the Government will be offered to businesses to help cover 75% of the new car costs, in addition to the vehicles’ running costs over three years. These businesses include local authorities, police forces and fire brigades, as well as private sector companies. Currently there are only limited FCVs available in the UK market, but this kind of Government support is guaranteed to encourage the development of FCVs. In 2014, the government earmarked £5 million for 12 hydrogen refueling stations, two of which are now opened, with the rest scheduled for the back end of this year. In spite of the investment in FCVs and their infrastructure, industry experts explain that the national infrastructure is still too weak to support

Diana Raine, European business manager of hydrogen energy for distributor Air Products

a mainstream hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, and awareness around the vehicles still needs to increase. Diana Raine, European business manager of hydrogen energy for distributor Air Products, was recently interviewed by car magazine Autocar said: “Ultimately, the strength of the framework is what will drive the adoption of these technologies. “Hydrogen is definitely on the [government’s] agenda; it’s better understood and people understand the environmental benefits of hydrogen cars better than they ever have, but certainly more could be done.” Raine did however acknowledge that ensuring refueling stations will be used is key to their development. “We need people using the station to justify the station itself, so we need to be nurturing vehicle deployment simultaneously.” she said.
