Honda’s 700th FIM

Everyone at Norton Way Honda would like to congratulate Honda Racing on reaching 700 FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Victories, I am sure you will all agree this is a fantastic achievement.

Team Honda, Isle of Mann TT, 1959 Tom Phillis, First World GP Win, 1961

This success was accomplished at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana, USA on August 9, 2015, when Honda MotoGP rider Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team RC213V) claimed victory in the MotoGP class, in Round 10 of the 2015 FIM Road Racing World Championship. By the beginning of the race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Honda had tallied 698 grand prix wins. The Moto3 class started under light rain, with most top riders choosing wet tires. 18 year old Belgian rider Livio Loi (RW Racing GP Honda NSF250RW) had taken a gamble to start on slicks, which paid off as the wet tire riders inevitably pitted, allowing Loi to claim his first victory after a consistent ride, taking Honda one step closer to the 700 win milestone. Uncertain weather conditions persisted in the MotoGP class which followed, with light rain in the latter stages of the premier class race. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team RC213V) maintained a 0.5 s gap with the race leader throughout the race, and with three laps remaining on lap 24, took the lead for a runaway victory, giving him his second consecutive win (third for the season), and Honda its 700th grand prix victory. This achievement began back in 1961, at the hands of Australian rider Tom Phillis on his Honda RC143 in the 125cc class of the season-opening Spanish Grand Prix, Honda has now achieved an unprecedented 700*grand prix wins. Freddie Spencer, NSR 500, 1985

M Grand Prix victory

This was after in 1954, Honda’s founder Soichiro Honda declared entry into the premier motor sports event of the time, the Isle of Man TT, aiming to “realize the dream of becoming the world’s best.” After five years developing a racing machine, Honda became the first Japanese motorcycle manufacturer to enter the Isle of Man TT race. Honda then forayed into the 350cc and 50cc classes in 1962, and the 500cc class in 1966, and won the championship in all five classes in 1966. At the time, Honda considered its racing activities to be a “laboratory on wheels,” and new technologies developed to win world championship races were applied to its production motorcycles. With dramatically improved quality, the market had expanded its support for Honda’s motorcycles. At the end of the 1967 season, Honda had paused its factory racing activities, which were to be restarted 11 years later, with 138 grand prix wins. In 1979, Honda returned to FIM Road Racing World Championship racing in the 500cc Marc Marquez, BRNO, 2015 Danny Pedrosa, Sepang 2015

class. Three years later in 1982, American rider Freddie Spencer won Round 7 in Belgium on his Honda NS500, giving Honda its first victory since returning to world grand prix racing. Honda then went on to win grand prix races in the 125cc and 250cc classes, contributing to its 500th victory in 2001, when Italian rider Valentino Rossi was victorious in the 500cc class at the seasonopening Japan Grand Prix. In 2005, Spaniard Dani Pedrosa rode his Honda RS250RW to victory in the 250cc class in Round 15 in Australia, marking Honda’s 600th grand prix win. Sales Manager of Norton Way Honda Bikes, Bruce Palmer had this to say: “A fantastic achievement for Honda racing, this clearly shows the excellence of Honda as a brand and I would like to wish them luck in continuing their success for many years to come.

REPSOL HONDA

MOTO GP

Despite a difficult start to the 2015 season, the Honda Repsol Team seem to be turning their fortunes around. Resurgent defending World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team RC213V) is currently in 3rd position in the World standings, behind two Yamaha riders- Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.

The last 3 races has seen Marquez in much better form recording victories in Germany & Indianapolis, and a second place finish in the most recent Grand Prix at the Brno Circuit, Czech Republic. BRNO Circuit, Czech Republic saw glimpses of Marquez’s recent form but he never quite had the race pace to keep up with Lorenzo. Marquez was the only man on the grid to keep up with Yamaha driver, but after 7 laps he started to struggle with grip levels, and changed his focus on securing second instead of pursuing the race win. Marquez said “Today Jorge rode a very good race. We knew we were not far off him, but we were not close enough and we tried to stick with

him, at least at the beginning of the race. After six or seven laps I began to lose performance and he was able maintain his pace. That’s where the difference was made. We achieved the goal we had for today: to try and open a gap to Valentino and the others from the start so I’m happy about that. When we have difficulties, as we did this weekend, we still have to score points. I think that this second position is good.” The next race in the season heads to Silverstone, GB. Both Repsol Honda riders will be looking to reduce the gap on their rivals in the Championship. Silverstone was successful for Marc Marquez last season, which saw him claim

R T R TYPE n Wednesday 19th August Norton Way Group provided a Civic Type R Track Day for a selected number of our lucky customers. The Track Day was to launch the vehicle and give people the opportunity to try the Beast that is the Type R out on the Track. The event took place at Bedford Autodrome, MK44 2YP. The track was designed from scratch by former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer, it was purpose build for speed and space, containing four entirely distinct circuits, over 5 miles of track, across 384 acre site. Due to the Autodrome not holding race events there are no crowdprotecting safety barriers or concrete walls, meaning the guests could drive to the limits in a safe environment. The South- West circuit at the track provided a fantastic venue to get the very most out of the amazing Civic Type R. It was decided to run three different slots for the customers, with starts at 4pm, 5pm and 6pm.

O

Each slot was filled with 14 customers, meaning this experience was provided for 42 customers. The day started off with a meet and greet at the circuit’s Monaco Suite with food and refreshments, giving the customers some needed fuel ready for the evening’s activities. This was followed by an introduction and full safety briefing by the head instructor for the day. The customers were then taking by coach to the track side ready for their race experience. Each customer had 4 laps around the 3 mile circuit with one of the track’s instructors in the car. The instructors were fantastic and gave directions & advice to our customers to get them round the track both as quickly and safely as possible. Each customer was given the opportunity to try the vehicle in its regular mode and then R mode which results in the suspension dampers getting 30% stiffer, the throttle becomes more responsive and the steering weights up. The circuit provided the 10

customers to reach speeds over 130mph as well as the opportunity to test out the Type R’s amazing handling on challenging corners and chicanes. Feedback from the customers about the vehicle was superb with many commenting on the vehicle’s handling, as well as how much quicker and the amount of improvements it has from its predecessors. This was further supported when the instructors took the vehicle around the track, many of which had professional race experience. All of the instructors gave the vehicle amazing feedback crediting the new 2.0 turbocharged i-VTEC engine and its grippy chassis enabling the vehicle to stick to the track to ensure precise handling. Norton Way Group would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Bedford Autodrome in helping run a successful event. The Group hopes all the customers had an excellent day and the track experience gave them an insight into how this fantastic car handles at high speeds. Following on from this Track Day, Norton Way Group is considering various different track days for its other franchises.
