Auto Express hosted a fantastic race this month at Rockingham International Circuit, Nortants, by putting Honda’s current fastest road car, the Civic Type R, up against the fastest motorcycle the CBR1000RR Fireblade SP.
Both vehicles had two big names in the racing world in control of them. The Civic Type R was being driven by British Touring Car Championship Legend, Matt Neal from Honda Yuassa Racing and British Superbike racer, Dan Linfoot was on the Fireblade SP. Matt Neal had this to say about the Civic Type R: ““My BTCC car has a 2.0-litre turbo with around 360bhp, depending on the circuit. It’s stripped out and so a lot lighter [than the road car], plus there’s much lower gearing, whereas the Type R has all the creature comforts and less power with 306bhp for greater reliability. Still, for a road car it’s pretty incredible on track.” Dan commented on the Fireblade SP saying: “It feels softer than my BSB bike. Its suspension and brakes are just more forgiving. And this plus the road tyres mean you can’t push it as hard round a circuit. And with 178bhp it’s down over 30 horses, too - but blimey, it’s probably still as fast as race bikes from just over a couple of decades ago.”

Auto Express decided they wanted the challenge to be as fair as possible. The bike had a serious advantage with a superior power-toweight ration of 848bhp/tonne compared to the car’s 221bhp/tonne. If the track would have been wet the contest would have been even as the Type R could make time up under braking in corners due to the added gap coming from its two extra wheels. Because the track was bone dry Dan decided to let Matt have a 10 second head start, watch the video to find out the winner!

Honda at the Goodwood Revival This year’s Goodwood Revival saw the 1966 Hansen Honda CR450 in action, in the annual celebration of vintage racing. The Revival for those you don’t know is a celebration of Goodwood’s halcyon motorsport days, from 1948 to 1966. And this year, saw the fantastic 1960s Hansen Honda in action in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy race. The day sees every detail of the racing period recreated, the enthusiastic spectators dress in pre- 1966 fashion, traditional race day food is served, paddock shelters move back in time and the races themselves replicate the past as much as possible, including a 30- strong grid of racing motorcycles. The Revivals period bike race was originally known as the Lennox Trophy, and many of the greatest two- wheel racing stars competed. These included the late two-time world champion Barry Sheene, who took five Revival victories ahead of his untimely death from cancer in March 2003. The race was then renamed to Barry

Sheene Memorial Trophy to honour the popular champion. This year’s Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy was a fantastic race featuring many iconic bikes from the 1960s, including the 1966 Hansen Honda CR450 American racer. The Honda Hansen was built in the same year the Goodwood track shut down from competitive racing. In this period Honda was flourishing by becoming the world’s largest motorcycle producer and turning into a dominant force in Grand Prix racing, by winning the Constructors’ Championship in every competitive class for that year. Bob Hansen the creator of the 1966 CR450, was an ex- bike racer and tuner, an American Honda dealer and a key force in racing during the 60s and 70s due to running Honda’s American bike teams. He had a lot of success as the leader of the teams, such as in 1967 at Daytona with a trio of semi- factory Honda- prepared CR450s. Hansen won his first Daytona 200 in 1970, using the CR450’s successor the CR750. This year the Hansen Honda was ridden by Chris Barge 5
and three- time Isle of Mann TT winner Ian Simpson, Ian took all of his TT victories on Honda motorcycles. Honda has continued from its fantastic heritage of producing both great road and race bikes. at the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015
Honda have announced their line up for the 44th Tokyo Motor Show which runs from October 30th to November 8th. The show’s concept will use Honda’s global slogan - ‘The Power of Dreams’, as the brand will showcase a broad range of items from innovative mobility products. Here are some of the innovative motorcycle concept models.
CBR250RR (pictured above) This light weight super sports concept is designed with the idea of a strong presence. This nextgeneration super sports concept features a long nose and low crouching position, which creates a sense of speed for the bike. Its aggressive look is topped off from a combination of different surfaces and sharp edges, which create a sense of hardness and solidity. Finally the exterior features matte- black- based low- contrast graphics which underlines its beauty and eyecatching form.
Neowing (pictured middle) Neowing is an unprecedented three- wheel vehicle that offers the cornering feel and sporty ride of a large-size motorcycle with the bonus of excellent stability at low speeds. This vehicle will feature an innovative hybrid system that will combine a horizontally- opposed 4-cyclinder engine alongside electric motors to generate plentiful torque for powerful acceleration. Last of all the vehicle will feature an original Honda linkage mechanism on its front wheel, I am sure you will agree this concept model gives an insight into Honda’s advanced futuristic styling and despite it being on three wheels it emphasizes the same mechanical fascination of a two-wheeled motorcycle. 6

To allow easy mounting and dismounting the battery component is positioned in the middle of the body. As well as the benefit of ease-of-handling due to the concentration of mass and lowering of the centre of gravity. Last of all our favourite part of this bike is that the battery itself is fully detachable, which means it can be recharged using a standard home wall socket.

The Correct Clothing
Riding comfortably in the cold weather begins with the correct gear choice. Black ice is extremely dangerous, if it looks remotely looks like ice our advice would be to stay away. Also be aware that with added salt on the roads, means that motorcycles can quickly succumb to rust. The best way to stop this would be regularly wash your bike to free it from as much salt as possible. TIP

Increase Visibility and Following Distance
In winter months you should be much more cautious with your driving style, by increasing your visibility and space. Increasing visibility means trying to look further down the road, helping you recognize hazards before they occur. This will allow you to react to a potential threat well in advance, and this is more than needed in winter when traction is limited from the cold roads. For following distance, maintained a few car lengths of space, will increase reaction time to hazards. Space is important this is shown by: in optimally-dry conditions, it takes an experience rider about 85 feet to stop a bike traveling at 35 mph. An average car is around 16 feet, so it would take about five car lengths to stop.

Watch for Salt, Fresh Cracks and Black Ice
Cold Weather = Colder Tyres
Cold weather means colder tyres, which equates to limited traction. Riding helps increase the heat of the tyres, but with the colder weather the briefest of stops can quickly cool your tires down, providing lack of traction. Also make sure you have adequate tread on your tyres for winter riding, this is part of our winter check and we will advise if any new tyres are needed. Finally check you tyre pressure, which again is part of our winter check. The correct tyre pressure is even more crucial during winter months when optimal traction is needed. 13
