THE 208 WINS THE REAL-WORLD 2015 MPG MARATHON Peugeot has won the MPG Marathon with the 208 1.6-litre BlueHDi 75 Active 5-door model, taking the overall victory with best average MPG and finishing second in the most improved MPG performance category.

T

The event is far from crawling around at unrealistic speeds, the rules even stipulate that teams must reach certain checkpoints by predetermined times. This year’s course allowed navigators to negotiate hills and traffic strategically, but carefully chosen check-points made using the motorway network less advantageous, thus a real-world driving experience was ensured and the competition made more realistic and ever challenging. The winning 208 was driven by former Peugeot Sport UK Manager Mick Linford and part-time rally navigator Jemma Champion who managed to achieve a very impressive 104.5mpg average over the two-day event. The 208 1.6-litre

he MPG Marathon is sponsored by Barclaycard Fuel+ in association with TMC, the event involves driving in real- world conditions over 385 miles with the challenge of finding the most fuel efficient vehicle over a two- day event. The 2015 event was held on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th September, starting and finishing from the stunning Heythrop Park Resort, in Oxfordshire. Prior to the 2013 event, competitors were required to follow a standardised route, but for the last two years they have been able to select the route they felt was the most fuel-efficient, an approach that has proved universally popular. 4

ADVICE ON HOW TO BE AN ECO-DRIVER: Every extra passenger or item carried all contribute weight negatively to affect vehicle performance and therefore fuel economy, so only take what is deemed necessary where possible Drive smart – close windows, and minimise energy consumption where possible by reducing use of energy sapping devices like air conditioning or heated rear window usage Keep the car clean, as dirt disrupts the aerodynamics and reduces aero efficiency Driving style is a major factor. Smooth, progressive acceleration is best, using the gearbox to quickly select a higher gear. Anticipate traffic conditions ahead so you can maintain cruising conditions and avoid braking unnecessarily. BlueHDi 75 Active 5-door model has an advertised Combined Drive Cycle fuel economy figure of 80.7mpg, this means Mick and Jemma achieved a 29% improvement from that figure. There is an even-more fuel efficient 208 being introduced into the UK line-up in October with the Diesel 1.6-litre BlueHDi 75 now specified with Stop & Start technology that has the Combined Drive Cycle fuel economy of 94.2mpg.

Some people said that the new Suzuki Vitara lacked a turbocharged petrol engine to truly compete with rivals. Well Suzuki listened and responded with the new ‘S’ version of the compact crossover. Featuring an all-new 1.4-litre direct-injection turbo petrol engine, the Vitara S produces 138bhp and 220Nm of torque, significantly more than the 118bhp and 156Nm output of the current naturally-aspirated 1.6. It’s not clear yet if Suzuki plans to replace that unit with the new turbo. Despite the power and torque boost, Suzuki customers can expect combined economy figures to improve over the already competitive 50.4mpg and 130g/km of the current petrol. As well as the new engine, the Vitara S also receives styling enhancements inside and out to mark it out as the flagship model in the range.

A five-slot chrome front grille debuts, and red accents across the leather and suede interior. The familiar suite of active safety kit is also available. Suzuki plans customer deliveries before the end of the year, and although there’s no official confirmation of UK figures it’s highly likely the Vitara S will reach our shores and the forecourt of Norton Way Suzuki. If you can’t wait for the Vitara S, we have a fantastic range of Business offers available on all current Vitaras. The vehicles have proved to be very reliable, safe and comfortable, and feedback from our staff has been excellent.” He continued: “The cars convey the professionalism of our service and the range has really come on in the last few years, even the small models feel big and the specification is excellent, Sat Nav being essential for us and many of our Nissans having it as standard. “The new Pulsar has proved particularly good and although we have traditionally bought our cars outright, the
