NISSAN SWITCHES ON THE SOLAR FARM

Nissan has switched on a new solar farm at its Sunderland Manufacturing site, it marks the company’s latest step towards intelligent mobility.

Pursuing a goal of zero emission vehicles and zero fatalities on the road, Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility vision is designed to guide Nissan’s product and technology pipeline, anchoring critical company decisions around how cars are powered, how cars are driven, and how cars integrate into society. Breakthrough initiatives recently announced concerning electric vehicles and next generation battery technology include: • A future generation of electric vehicle batteries for the UK battery plant. • A major vehicle-to-grid trial in the UK in partnership with energy provider Enel that will see Nissan electric vehicles supplying the UK’s National Grid with an efficient and flexible source of energy. A trial of 100 vehicle-to-grid units will commence in the UK later this year. consumers save and make money. • A revolutionary new residential energy storage system called xStorage developed alongside Eaton, the global leaders in power management. • Confirmation that Nissan will integrate V2G technology and energy storage solutions into all of its major European offices by the end of 2017.

The farm is made up of 19,000 photo-voltaic panels, giving the manufacturer a 4.75MW facility. Now fully operational and is a major part of Nissan’s twin goals of zero emissions and zero fatalities. It has been installed alongside 10 wind turbines which already generates clean power. Colin Lawther, Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Manufacturing, Purchasing and Supply Chain Management in Europe, said: “Renewable energy is fundamental to Nissan’s vision for Intelligent Mobility. “We have built over 50,000 Nissan LEAFs in Europe, and the industry-leading new 250kmrange LEAF is now available. With 10 wind turbines already generating energy for our Sunderland plant, this new solar farm will further reduce the environmental impact of Nissan vehicles during their entire lifecycle.”

Business charging point grant The Government currently provides discounts for domestic charging points but there is no such grant for businesses. This potential scheme would be a huge boost for both companies operating plug-in fleets and dealers selling EVs. Martell added the grant would be available via charging specialists. He explained: “It will be offered by a number of suppliers [and] we can guide people through the application – in fact, we can complete the application for them. We expect to do quite a large number of workplace units when such a grant is in place.”

The UK Government has set out plans to introduce a subsidy this July for businesses installing charging points at work premises. This is part of the Government’s plan to boost electric vehicle uptake by introducing the grant. Car news site, Auto Express understands a formal announcement will be in July. There is currently no confirmation on how much the grant will be but it’ll support companies wanting to set up charging points at offices and car parks. David Martell, CEO of charging point specialist Chargemaster, revealed: “We have been informed that there is likely to be a workplace charging grant established this summer by the government. “It hasn’t been decided exactly how much the grant will be, but certainly there will be support by the government putting in charging points in work premises.”

PSA TARGETING ELE TECHNOLOGY

Peugeot, Citroen and DS, all part of the PSA Group have set out plans to produce higher capacity batteries and faster charging times for their electric & hybrid vehicles. The next-generation lithium ion batteries will also aim to reduce anxiety for battery electric vehicle owners through an increased range.

The plans have set out that future plug-in hybrids will have 12kWh batteries (13kWh for SUVs), which are 12 times the capacity of existing plug-in hybrid packs and claim to be 20-30% more powerful than competitors, at 80kW and 90kW respectively. These batteries’ operating range is 210-350V (240-400V for the SUV). A 3.3kW onboard charger tops up PHEV batteries in 4.5 hours, or 2.5 hours if a 6.6kW fast charger is installed. The battery electric vehicles 7kW onboard charger can deliver enough charge in 90 minutes to drive 62 miles, while a full charge will take eight hours. A wall-mounted fast charger 8

An increase in efficiency of research and development activity is expected to save €1.5 billion (£1.14bn) in five years, or €300m (£228m) per year. PSA plans to motivate engineers by giving them back the savings to invest in new programmes. The PSA group is expected to launch seven plug-in hybrids and four electric vehicles in the upcoming years, as well as implementing a connected and autonomous vehicle programme. The Skoda Superb is set to be the first car in the Czech brand’s range to get plug-in hybrid power, following the reveal of the part-electric VisionS concept car at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Skoda boss Bernhard Maier told us “hybrids are something we are discussing for all of our

product line-up - in the years to come there will be a transition phase. We strongly believe that a big number of our customers will be dependent on normal engines as well but the plug-in hybrid solution, starting with the Superb in 2019, is our plan - but there will be other models as well.” CLICK HERE TO READ THE ARTICLE ONLINE
