In addition to our classical programme, this is a special season as we welcome the world-renowned Welsh National Opera back to the Theatre Royal, after an absence of more than 40 years, and to the Playhouse for the first time as a part of our new approach to artistic programming across our stages. The company will be arriving in style with two very different takes on two favourite operas. The first is a riotous version of Rossini’s Don Pasquale at the Playhouse and then Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, a period-set production, on the main stage at Theatre Royal in April 2020. It is fantastic to welcome WNO to our family of artistic partners alongside Glyndebourne and English Touring Opera. We look forward to welcoming you to our stages during this season and don’t forget that there are discounts available through our Classical Music Subscription and you’ll find more information on page 11 about how to take advantage of this. So whether you are a committed classical music fan or planning on attending your first opera, there is something to suit all tastes. We hope you will find something to treat the ears, eyes and senses!

TENEBRAE CHOIR WITH AURORA ORCHESTRA NIGEL SHORT (MUSIC DIRECTOR) Bach
Partita No. 2 in D
Faure Requiem Tenebrae, under their acclaimed Music Director Nigel Short, are currently regarded as one of our finest choruses and with the Aurora Orchestra will give a performance of Faure’s serenely beautiful Requiem. This is one of the most ethereal works ever composed and is a great favourite with audiences the world over. Before the Requiem, Nigel Short has conceived an ingenious combination of the unaccompanied Bach violin Partita with excerpts from the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion. This blend of Bach’s greatest music runs seamlessly into the Faure Requiem as a final D minor chord.
