Pilates Reformers - What Are They? Article by Jane Thomas Pilates
Mostly everyone knows what Pilates is - an exercise programme that promotes fitness, flexibility, mobility and strength, originally developed a hundred years ago by Joseph Pilates - but not many people know what a Pilates “Reformer” is, despite them forming the very original basis of Pilates itself. A quick bit of history - Joseph was German, born in 1883 and a gymnast, but came to England in 1912 to work as a self-defence trainer to the police in Scotland Yard. Classed as an “enemy alien” when WW1 began, Joseph was held in internment camps for the duration, working in hospitals to aid recuperation of soldiers after injuries. He used whatever came to hand to help with his work, making do with the metal-framed hospital beds and extra bedsprings to make supportive frames that people could do their exercises on. Effectively, Joseph’s exercises helped the patients get better faster, and they were less susceptible to secondary infection, which killed so many people in similar circumstances back then.

When the war ended he developed the recuperation and exercise beds further, into what were eventually called Reformers. Emigrating to the USA, he filed his first patent for the Reformer there in 1927, and also filed for several other bits of Pilates apparatus after this. Opening his first studio in New York, in the same building as the New York Ballet, his first customers were dancers, as well as the public.

Originally calling his exercise programme Contrology, his success at treating injured dancers in particular helped him spread his exercise programme throughout the States, and as more people became devotees it eventually became known as the Pilates programme.

Also, as more and more people began to train using his technique, he realised that a more “mass-market” way of performing Pilates exercises was needed - Reformers are quite expensive and difficult to teach in large groups. He cleverly took his Reformer exercise programme and developed the exercises into a suite of exercise that can be done on the floor - hence what we know today as Pilates matwork. Alongside the development of matwork Pilates and its subsequent uptake around the world, Joseph continued to develop and improve his Reformers over the years, to the modern Reformer comprising several important parts shown here. This is a typical Studio Reformer, which quite naturally is big, heavy and bulky. Home Reformers on the other hand are pared down, usually folding in the middle to aid storage, but keep all the important parts shown. Whether Studio or Home Reformer however, your Pilates is taken to the next level. Joseph had his original team of teachers he personally trained. Becoming known as Pilates Disciples, they took the Pilates programme arounds the world, in turn training their own generation of teachers, who in turn trained theirs. Looked at as a hierarchical family, Jane Thomas is effectively Joseph Pilates’ great-greatgranddaughter, making sure that the original Pilates principles are maintained to this day.

The Charnwood Gardener Article by Peter Flood Bedding Down For Winter October is the bittersweet finale for summer bedding. If you’ve managed to keep your Petunias going this long then I salute you, but it really is time to clear out and make room. Make room for what? Surely, with the onset of winter, all thoughts of colourful displays in pots and baskets are mere fantasy? Nay, brave gardener! Pull up your collar against those bitter northerlies, warm your hands with a nice cup of tea and lean closer. There’s a whole, beautiful world of winter bedding displays to explore, and these are the secrets to success! For larger containers, small shrubs are a good idea. Skimmia, Euonymus, heather and Cornus all make a lovely foil for smaller flowering plants.
We remain fully available for appointments via face to face, telephone, email and now by post if required. We are still willing to meet our clients in the comfort of their homes by appointment only and are following guidance provided by the Government in regards to hygiene and safe distancing. We will of course work with you, our customers and partners, and respect their wishes on preferred means of contract. Kornerstone Legal Services remains here for you.
Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling Skimmia japonica looks fabulous throughout the winter
Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).
Black mondo with a bright green stonecrop (Sedum)
Grasses look great. Black mondo (Ophiopogon ‘Nigrescens’) or Carex ‘Evergold’ will add structure, colour and, in chilly winds, movement to winter pots. Combine with contrasting colours for eye-popping interest on bleak days. A pot of hardy house leeks (Sempervivum) make a striking feature. Remember to add a layer of gravel to the top of the pot to keep the base of the plants dry. Pansies are fine, but think about using other winter-flowering plants like Cyclamen or Helleborus. There’s also plants with pretty berries through the winter months, like Ilex, Nandina and Gaultheria. Don’t forget to keep your containers going into early spring by adding some bulbs. Snowdrops are beautiful early in the year, Crocus will dazzle in February and everyone loves miniature ‘Tete-a-tete’ daffodils (Narcissus) in March. You can’t beat a white colour theme for the winter months. A variegated ivy like Hedera helix ‘Glacier’ combined with Skimmia ‘Thereza’ and white pansies (with a purple Heuchera or two) will look beautiful until it’s time to think about summer bedding again. OCTOBER TIP: Grown a pumpkin for Halloween? Keep some seeds for next year’s jack-o-lantern and roast the rest! They’re delicious roasted with olive oil and harissa.

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey
T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Coronavirus As we write this report and prepare to send to print, cases of Coronavirus in Charnwood are on the rise, including some cases in Anstey. It is very important that we adhere to Government Guidance. We must continue to wash our hands regularly, cover our faces and maintain social distancing. The ‘Rule of Six’ is now in force and we must not meet, indoors or outdoors in groups larger than six people. We hope by the time you read this report, we will have turned the corner and cases are starting to come down again. We need to avoid a second wave and risk going into a local lockdown. Please do all you can to protect yourself and others. Charnwood Big Switch Residents in Charnwood can now reduce their carbon footprint and save on their energy bills with ‘Charnwood Big Switch’. The council’s energy switching partner iChoosr has introduced new rules which means only suppliers offering 100% renewable electricity tariffs can take part in auctions. ‘Charnwood Big Switch’ was launched last year to help residents change energy suppliers with ease and in the process, get a better deal. More than 200 residents have now registered for the scheme since launching and those who switched in May saved an average of £247 each on their bills. ‘Charnwood Big Switch’ is delivered by the Council and iChoosr, an independent specialist provider in collective energy switching. Collective switching gives people the opportunity to pay less for their energy. Residents can switch electric, gas or dual fuel and can choose to have paper bills or to manage their accounts online. iChoosr hold three auctions a year and energy suppliers compete to provide the lowest priced tariff in the auction. Residents can register their interest in the scheme for free and the next energy auction will take place on 19th October 2020. For more information about Charnwood Big Switch and to register visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodbigswitch Jobs in Loughborough A new ‘Lighthouse Lab’ facility will be established in Loughborough to increase the UK’s COVID-19 testing capacity, creating 400 jobs. The UK Department of Health and Social Care’s Lighthouse Lab at Charnwood Campus in Loughborough is a partnership with global diagnostics company PerkinElmer. It will be the seventh major lab supplementing NHS labs, processing tests across the National Testing Programme and will be the first facility in the East Midlands. The Lighthouse Lab network has been established to increase the number of COVID-19 tests that can take place each day. The labs receive samples from care homes, COVID-19 testing centres and home testing kits, which are then processed by a skilled workforce from across the scientific community. The Lighthouse Lab at Charnwood Campus aims to process 50,000 tests per day by the end of the year and will be delivered and managed by PerkinElmer. Charnwood Campus is the first and only Life Sciences Opportunity Zone in the UK and part of the Loughborough and Leicester Science and Innovation Enterprise Zone. Charnwood Lottery Two lucky residents have won £250 each, thanks to supporting good causes and playing the Charnwood Community Lottery. The lottery helps to raise money for local good causes, voluntary organisations and charities within Charnwood. For every £1 ticket purchased, 60p goes towards helping good causes in the borough and residents can choose which of the good causes registered to support when buying their ticket. The top prize in the Charnwood Community Lottery is £25,000. Local causes are still able to register for the lottery by visiting www. charnwoodlottery.co.uk so their organisations can benefit from the money raised through the lottery. Residents can sign up to play the Charnwood Community Lottery by visiting the website. www.charnwoodlottery.co.uk Storm Grants Residents in Charnwood who were victims of flooding after Storms Ciara and Dennis in February 2020 may be eligible for a grant.

The Property Flood Resilience (PFR) Recovery Support Scheme Grant 2020 is funded by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and administered by Charnwood Borough Council to residents on their behalf. The recovery grant can cover works up to the value of £5,000 (inclusive of VAT) with the aim of helping home or business owners to make their properties resilient to future floods as a part of the repair process. The Council is aware of approximately 40 properties that were affected and are contacting the owners directly, but any property owners who think they could benefit from the support are encouraged to check the eligibility criteria and apply. Claims will be dealt with promptly, and all eligible funding is expected to be claimed within the current financial year (end 31st March 2021). The final date for applications is 31st December 2020 but in exceptional cases, extensions to these deadlines may be granted. Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/flooding_grant for full details and to apply. If you require more information, contact the Council at FloodResilienceGrant@charnwood.gov.uk Local Government Reform The Government is expected to publish a white paper about devolution very soon. This paper will look at ways to transfer the delegation of power to a lower level, by enabling local administrations to take over some of the decision making currently made by central government to local or regional level. This is beginning to look at how we can work better together at a local level and provide better funded local services. The leaders of all seven district and borough councils within Leicestershire say that they will be fully involved in any discussions about the future of local government and will protect the interests of local residents and businesses. In a joint statement, the Leaders said: “The district and borough councils are continuing to focus their efforts on playing a crucial role in tackling the coronavirus pandemic and working hard to support communities and local businesses in these difficult times. That involves working with a range of partners, including Leicestershire County Council. We are aware that a white paper about devolution and local recovery is expected shortly and should the government initiate a consultation about the future of local government, the district and borough councils of Leicestershire will be fully involved and will ensure the interests of residents and businesses in our areas are protected”. As more information becomes available, we will share in our monthly reports. Updates The new bollards outside the Post Office have unfortunately been ignored and a small car is squeezing between the gaps in the bollards. Highways officers are looking into this and if this parking doesn’t stop, another bollard will need to be installed. The bollards have been placed there for pedestrian safety both on the crossing and on the shop frontage. It is disappointing that one car owner is choosing to ignore this safety feature. We have had a few enquiries about the new pedestrian crossing due to be installed on Cropston Road following the planning permission granted for Barwood Homes at the old Brookside Nursery site. The legal agreement states that a pedestrian crossing must be in place by the occupation of the 10th dwelling at the latest. The developers estimate that this will be approximately December 2020. Highway Officers have requested that the crossing is put into place as soon as possible, so that there is a safe walking route to school for children and make crossing this busy road safer. We are still waiting for the Public Consultation on the blanket ban on parking around the three entrances to Bradgate Park to be launched. We expect this to be by the end of September 2020. We will advertise the consultation as soon as it is launched on our social media channels but please also keep an eye on the Leicestershire County Council web page where the details of the consultation will be available: www.leicestershire. gov.uk/search/site/Consultations?nid=66651 If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help. Anstey Local History Society Article by Jane Cole
Can You Help? Did you work at Marwins Engineering or know someone who did? Anstey Local History Society has received an enquiry from Pat Bates who worked at K&T in Brighton when Marwin Engineering merged with the company in 1973 to form KTM. He worked directly with many of the people who moved down to Brighton from Marwin. He would be very interested in talking to anyone who has a good knowledge of the earliest days of Marwin Machine Tools up to the time of the merger with K&T in 1973. Pat says ‘I’m particularly keen on learning more of the earliest hydraulic drive NC Max-E-Trace, Max-E-Mill and Min-E-Centre machines. I wonder if anyone knows if Dave Perkins is still 'around'. Dave never moved down to the Brighton area and I think Ges Gandy moved back to the general Leicester area many years ago.’ If you can help please email Pat at: family.bates23@gmail.com
The Anstey Millennium Collection Article by Brian Kibble
Some fifty years ago through the then Anstey Village Society I started collecting old pictures of the village and villagers which eventually became The Anstey Millennium Collection in the year 2000. The Parish Council at that time funded the production of “The Changing Scene” book and gave everyhousehold in the village a copy to mark the occasion. The book comprised of a small selection of pictures and comparing them on a “Now and Then” basis. Looking at the “Now” pictures today empathises the maxim that today’s picture is tomorrow’s history and heritage. The collection is now under the guardianship of the Anstey Local History Society, complete with cross referenced indices and comprises over 2,500 copies of scenes and events with near 4,000 villagers identified from the late 19th century to the present time. In addition the collection has over 2,500 historical items recorded such as letterheads, invoices and adverts of the very many businesses that have traded in our village since the 1870’s. In recent years many of the collection have found their way onto the Old Anstey Photo Group facebook site. Today the Society is still seeking to find more items for the collection and invite you to contact me at Brian.Kibble@ virginmedia.com, phone 236 4441 or call at No.2 Elms Court on the Cropston Road opposite the Co-op. All items will be carefully receipted and returned and signed for when processed. Original pictures are preferred and if possible please give as much information as you can such as date and the names of any people identified. All items in the collection acknowledge the donor. The Society hope to meet up again in the New Year. In the meantime get your camera out and record today’s ever changing scene - keep safe, Brian Tel: 0116 236 4875

Deborah Taylor County Councillor for Bradgate Division
T: 0116 2350126 - E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk Life is continuing as much as before but I did manage to have a week away. It was my first break since Christmas and was much needed. I didn’t switch my two computers on for the whole time I was away, and thoroughly enjoyed long walks with our dogs and a bit too much good food! It had been a busy few months before I went away, and it’s been very busy since I returned. The meeting schedules are now back to normal following the summer recess and that means a lot of pre-reading and a lot of meeting preparation. I have been supporting schools as pupils have all gone back to school and, unfortunately, as expected, we have seen some cases of Coronavirus. These are mixed cases, with both children and teachers affected. These have been single cases rather than outbreaks and the affected schools have taken all the necessary action as per the guidance from Public Health England. Further guidance has been issued locally and we have requested that all parents and carers wear face coverings outside of schools and to ensure they practice social distancing. This is to try and stop community transmission.
course of action fails, we will have no other option but to install additional bollards in the area, but we are trying to avoid these extra costs from public funds which could be used elsewhere. Bradgate Car Parking Consultation I am hopeful that the consultation will go live before the end of September 2020. I will promote this consultation across my social media platforms but please keep an eye on the consultation web page at: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/search/site/ Consultations?nid=66651
All the County Council operated museum and heritage sites have re-opened to the public from the beginning of September. Charnwood Museum, which is run in a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council (CBC), but operated by CBC, re-opened on the 26th August.
Coronavirus ‘Rule of Six’ From Monday 14th September 2020, the rules about meeting up have changed. You must not meet with people from other households socially in groups of more than six (including children). This will apply indoors and outdoors, including in private homes. This change will simplify and clarify the rules on social gatherings, so they are easier to understand and easier for the police to enforce. There will be a limited number of exemptions. COVID-19 secure venues, such as places of worship, restaurants and hospitality venues, can still host larger numbers in total but groups of up to 6 must not mix or form larger groups. This rule will not apply to individual households or support bubbles of more than six who will still be able to gather together. Education and work settings are unaffected, and organised team sports will still be able to proceed, as will weddings and funerals with up to 30 people. These new limits will be enforceable in law and any enforcement will be carried out by the police. The rules in England differ from those in the devolved administrations of the UK (see further guidelines below).
Secondary School Places Parents and carers with children, due to start secondary school in Leicestershire in September 2021, can now apply for school places. The application process is now open, with parents and carers required to apply for their preferred schools by Saturday 31st October 2020.
Flu Vaccinations There have been some changes to the availability of flu vaccinations this year due to Coronavirus. Eligible residents will begin receiving invitations to get their annual flu vaccine. Leicestershire County Council Museums and Heritage Sites The County Council Museum and Heritage sites of Bosworth Battlefield, 1620s House and Gardens at Donington le Heath, Melton Museum and Harborough Museum closed to the public in March 2020 in line with government advice. From 1st July 2020, government advice changed to permit museum and heritage sites to re-open with various restrictions in place. Significant work has been underway to prepare sites to re-open to the public, safely and in line with relevant guidance. This has required the installation of screens in receptions, ticket and retail spaces, clear signage, installation of hand sanitising stations and enhanced cleaning regimes along with restricting the numbers of visitors at any one time. In line with the government’s advice, all visitors are required to wear a face covering in all the venues, unless they have a valid exemption. The venues will also require people to book their visit in advance through the relevant website. For anyone unable to book online, bookings can be undertaken by phone.
If you are unable to apply online, you can download a form from the website, fill it in and post it by the closing date. Alternatively, please call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684 and request a form to be sent out to you. Bollards, Anstey I have had several residents contact me about the persistent car that is still parking at the front of the Post Office despite safety bollards being installed. I have held discussions with highway officers about how we can overcome this issue. Since it is the same car parking there on a daily basis, we are trying to work with the vehicle owner to highlight the reasons why the bollards were placed there. If this

When’s the right time to consider a stairlift? This month Occupational Therapist Sophia Dickinson BSc (Hons.), MRCOT, Founder of Home Independence Occupational Therapy Ltd, tells us about her role as an Occupational Therapist and how she helps people to maintain their skills and independence with everyday activities in their home. Sophia also talks about the positive impact that a stairlift can have on a person’s life and the signals that indicate a stairlift could be a necessary solution for moving between the upstairs and downstairs as mobility becomes an issue. Sophia Dickinson BSc (Hons.), MRCOT Founder of Home Independence Occupational Therapy Ltd
Q • Sophia, many people have reservations about getting a stairlift and feel it could take away their mobility – from your experience, what would your view be on this? A • If an individual has reservations about getting a stairlift, due to a fear that it may reduce their mobility, I would ask about their current level of mobility. Are they walking with a mobility aid or independently? How far can they currently walk? Do they tire easily? Do they experience shortness of breath? Can they complete the stairs easily now or are they beginning to find the stairs are exhausting? Do they feel anxious about completing the stairs? Do they have stair rails in place to help them? Have they ever felt unsafe to complete the stairs or worried that they lack the strength to continue? This information would help me to assess the current mobility, levels of fatigue, shortness of breath, emotional wellbeing, and the impact on energy levels. Completing stairs is a great form of exercise for those who are physically able to manage without risk of injury or harm, fatigue, or shortness of breath. However, for those with reduced mobility, who are finding that completing the stairs is exhausting, a stairlift could be the perfect solution. Q • If people don’t feel ready for a stairlift, what else could they do to ensure they are still able to access vital parts of their home such as the bathroom and kitchen whilst remaining mobile? A • If an individual does not feel ready for a stairlift but is unsafe to complete the stairs due to a risk of falling down the stairs. I would advise them not to use the stairs at all and instead to have a downstairs existence. I would ask the following questions: Do you have two reception rooms? Can one of them become a bedroom? Do you have an easily accessible toilet downstairs? Or is a commode needed? If a commode is needed, who will empty it? Do you have level access shower facilities downstairs? If not, can you manage to have an all over body wash independently? If not, can someone help you? I would assess the environment to reduce the risk of falls and offer solutions to promote independence. Q • What would you say are the ‘red lights’ that might indicate a stairlift could be needed relatively quickly? A • There are several factors which could indicate that a stairlift is needed. Reduced mobility, the need for a walking aid, such as a walking stick or a walking frame. Fatigue, shortness of breath, existing stair rails no longer appear to be helpful, feelings of anxiety related to the stairs and worry that they are unsafe to complete the stairs or that they lack the strength to continue. Anstey Parish Council
Article by Liz Hawkes Loneliness
Councillor Vicky Ball Chairman of the Events Committee What is loneliness? “An unwelcome feeling of lack or loss of companionship.” We have all probably felt lonely at some point in our lives. It’s not necessarily a consistent feeling but, never-the-less, an unpleasant one. Before the pandemic crisis, one in ten people said they experienced feelings of loneliness. Figures prior to the pandemic showed that nine million people in the UK were experiencing loneliness; 1.2 million older people, 40% of 16 – 24-year olds, 50% of all disabled people and many more. After the first two weeks of lockdown in April, this rose to one in four. There can be many reasons a person feels lonely.
Not only does loneliness affect your mental health it can affect your physical health too, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. So, what’s the solution? One antidote to loneliness is connection and a strong, close community. In these days of social distancing, mask wearing, and a lack of local groups and activities to attend, it’s very hard to feel connected with others. As a threat of another lockdown looms, we all need to be aware that there will be people around us who may be feeling very lonely indeed. Look
around you, can you connect more with others? Perhaps saying hello to people in the street, speaking to neighbours, offering assistance to others, phoning people rather than texting might help to make you and others to feel connected, part of the community. Please remember, if you are feeling lonely you are not the only one. Millions of people feel just like you do. The following organisations may be able to help; Campaign to End Loneliness - MIND Let’s Talk Loneliness - The Silver Line (helpline for older people) 0800 470 8090 Or phone your Parish Council 0116 2362646 who may be able to put you in touch with volunteers who may be able to help. Vicky Ball Groups in Anstey There are groups in Anstey who are starting to meet again within the Social Distancing Guidelines, if you know of any groups that could help people in need of social contact please contact us. If you would like any information about groups currently running do not hesitate to contact the Parish Office. We are aware that the following groups are running: • U3A Petanque – Mitchells Field, Tuesday afternoon • U3A Croquet – Millfield Playing Field, Thursday morning • Anstey Nomads Juniors – Mitchells Field and the recreation ground, Stadon Road • Keep fit classes – Long Close & the recreation ground Stadon Road Opening of Jubilee Hall The following plan to re-open the Jubilee Hall is subject to change and will be updated with Government Guidelines, do check the website, noticeboard outside the Jubilee Hall and facebook for notices about re-opening. Since the start of lock-down in March the Jubilee Hall has been closed to the public meaning an abrupt stop to main social groups. The Parish Council is now looking to see how we can slowly start to re-open this important facility. The Parish Office will be looking to re-open from Monday 5th October to answer queries between the hours

David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
T: 01530 244804 - E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk Planning News I have ‘called in’ the planning application to extend the current dwelling and the erection of a replacement garage at 11 Windmill Rise Woodhouse Eaves, to be determined by the Plans Committee. The recommendation from officers at Charnwood Borough Council is to grant conditionally. I will be speaking at the meeting, outlining my concerns with the proposal, I will let you know the outcome of the Plans Committee decision next month.
COVID-19 Testing Boost in Loughborough A new ‘Lighthouse Lab’ facility will be established in Leicestershire to increase the UK’s COVID-19 testing capacity, in an investment creating 400 jobs. The UK Department of Health and Social Care’s Lighthouse Lab at Charnwood Campus in Loughborough is a partnership with global diagnostics company PerkinElmer. It will be the seventh major lab supplementing NHS labs, processing tests across the National Testing Programme. The Lighthouse Lab network has been established to increase the number of COVID-19 tests which can take place each day. The labs receive samples from care homes, COVID-19 testing centres and home testing kits, which are then processed by a skilled workforce from across the scientific community. The lab at Charnwood Campus aims to process 50,000 tests per day by the end of the year and will be delivered and managed by PerkinElmer. Don’t forget to keep updated on all COVID-19 news, visit www.charnwood. gov.uk/coronavirus for all Charnwood Borough Council service changes and developments, useful links to NHS and government advice, business support, community information and more.
‘It’s Down To Us’ Campaign Charnwood Borough Council have been involved in co-ordinating a campaign called ‘It’s Down To Us’ which has been launched across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to tackle the rise in case numbers. The campaign involves localising key government messages with local places and faces, highlighting the changes in behaviour which everyone needs to continue to adopt and also thanking those who are already taking steps to protect one another. As well as sharing the Council’s messages on social media, below are a few messages from the campaign. Meeting others safely is an important way to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19. Make sure you’re meeting in a group of 6 or less and follow social distancing rules wherever you go. We all want to get back to the way life was, including getting together with family and friends who don’t live with us, For now, we need to stay apart so we can be together again. This means meeting in groups of 6 or less. Thank you to residents and local businesses for playing your part in helping to control the virus, It’s down to all of us to protect each other. All of our actions make a real difference. Wash your hands regularly, wear a face covering and make space to control the virus and protect one another. The last 6 months have been tough for everyone, It’s vital we keep our distance from one another so we can be together again. Stay apart from people you don’t live with to protect them and help control the virus. Wearing a face covering can help to control the virus and protect others. However, some people are exempt due to disability or medical conditions. Please don’t judge. Supporting Charnwood Communities Charnwood Community Action is continuing to support residents across the Borough. The Borough Council launched the campaign earlier this year in partnership with John Storer Charnwood and other voluntary organisations to help advise, co-ordinate and guide the borough-wide community efforts during the coronavirus pandemic. They are now working with many community groups to help volunteers continue to support vulnerable people within the Borough of Charnwood. Charnwood Community Action recently delivered its 12,000th food parcel and is currently delivering to around 600 households each week. The team has also provided a befriending service to residents and signposting people to a range of services. Staying Safe From COVID-19 Scams As people worry about their health, families and finances during the COVID-19 pandemic, unscrupulous criminals are taking full advantage of these fears and are preying on members of the public. As scams that have been around for a while are ‘updated’ to exploit this situation, Leicestershire Trading Standards are warning residents to remain vigilant. The following are two of the various scams currently circulating to be aware of. Telephone scams: Beware of cold calls pretending to be from a trusted organisation – such as banks, the police, a utility provider or a computer company. Trying to obtain personal or financial information, they encourage victims to hand over card details, or trick them into revealing PIN numbers or transferring money into accounts they control. If a call wasn’t expected, it’s always best to hang up and find the real phone number from an actual bill or similar documentation. Door-to-door scams: It is the elderly and most vulnerable in our communities who are targeted by criminals with cold calls on the doorstep. Scammers take the unsuspecting victims’ money and may also attempt to obtain personal information that may then be passed to other fraudsters. Recent scams include individuals turning up out of the blue with bogus offers to clean front doorsteps or driveways claiming this will kill off bacteria and help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Traders have been in local areas offering discounts to work carried out, particularly for home improvements and gardening work. These people may seem genuine, but the work is often unnecessary and substandard. Do say no to unwanted, or uninvited callers at the door. Do make sure your back door is closed and locked so no one can gain entry whilst you are distracted if someone knocks on your front door. Do not open the door if you are not sure. Shop Safe, Shop Local Shop safe, shop local – that is the message from Charnwood Borough Council as it launches a campaign to support local businesses. The Council and partners, are calling on people to support their local high streets and reassure them that significant steps have been taken to ensure visitors are safe when shopping in the Borough. High Streets have extra signage to remind people of the need for social distancing and local businesses have introduced their own measures to ensure they are complying with the latest COVID-19 guidance. Extra cleaning is also taking place in some areas and pubs, cafes and restaurants have introduced a range of measures including test and trace. Over the coming months the Shop Safe, Stay Local campaign will be highlighting the steps taken to ensure our local high streets are safe places to visit. They are not only safe, but also great places to visit for shopping, eating and going out. For more information on the campaign, please visit www. charnwood.gov.uk/shopsafeshoplocal.
Future of Local Government The leaders of all seven district and borough councils in Leicestershire say they will be fully involved in any discussions about the future of local government and will protect the interests of residents and businesses. The government is expected to soon publish a white paper about devolution. In a joint statement, the leaders said: “ The district and borough councils are continuing to focus their efforts on playing a crucial role in tackling the coronavirus pandemic and working hard to support communities and local businesses in these difficult times. That involves working with a range of partners, including Leicestershire County Council. The district and borough councils would like to make it clear that the number one priority is continuing to help people and businesses through this crisis. However, should government initiate a consultation about the future of local government, the district and borough councils of Leicestershire will be fully involved and will ensure the interests of residents and businesses in our areas are protected” Charnwood Big Switch Residents in Charnwood can now reduce their carbon footprint and save on their energy bills with ‘Charnwood Big Switch’ Charnwood Borough Council’s energy switching partner iChoosr has introduced new rules which means only suppliers offering 100% renewable electricity tariffs can take part in the auctions. Charnwood Big Switch was launched last year to help residents change energy suppliers with ease and get a better deal. More than 200 residents have now registered for the scheme since launch and those who switch in May saved an average of £247 each on their bills. Collective switching gives people the opportunity to pay less for energy. Residents can switch electric or dual fuel and can choose to have paper bills or manage their accounts online. iChoosr hold three auctions a year and energy suppliers compete to provide the lowest priced tariff in the auction. Residents can register for their interest in the scheme for free and the next energy auction will take place on October 19th 2020.

Rural Watch Scheme I have had a very good meeting with the Police Sergeant for our local area, Steven Kilsby. He is keen to set up a rural watch scheme for the farming community and like organisations such as owners of horses. Sergeant Kilsby would be interested to hear views from the farming community and others as to how we can work together to help reduce crime in our rural areas and meet up with the local policing team on a regular basis. He stated it is important that people know that there is a local policing team as well as the 24/7 response officers. Within my Borough Council Ward, your local policing team for the Parish of Newtown Linford is Police Constable Moore and Police Community Support Officer Jarvis. For the Parish of Woodhouse it is Police Constable Hobbs and Police Community Support Officers Vaughan and Hallmark. Since the meeting with Sergeant Kilsby, he has updated me with a point of contact for the upcoming Rural Watch Scheme. This will be PCSO Vaughan, who will be the best person to contact. Thomas.Vaughan6051@ leicestershire.pnn.police.uk Contact details for Sergeant Kilsby by e-mail steven.kilsby@leicestershire. pnn.police.uk. He is keen for residents to register their interests and also follow Charnwood Police on social media. Kicking Joint Pain Into Touch
Rainbows Classic Car Run
Physical activity brings with it enormous health benefits but for those of us with some form of arthritis - an estimated 20% - gardening and other such activities may not be as enjoyable as they once were.
In early September, and for the sixth year running, Terry Farmer and Vicki Friend, of Charnwood-based North Leicester MG Club, along with Reliant Scimitar Club member Mick Squire, organised a classic car run in aid of Rainbow’s Hospice for Children and Young People, despite the current difficulties.
Article by Gary Trickett
Arthritis is somewhat of an umbrella term and literally means ‘inflammation of the joints’. As you grow older your body is often unable to replace new cartilage to counteract any loss, allowing insufficiently cushioned bones to rub together causing inflammation, pain and stiffness. Diet is important. Eating less of the foods that can increase inflammation and lots more of the anti-inflammatory foods that can help to reduce it, can help: reduce your intake of coffee, alcohol, fizzy drinks and foods made from refined white flour and white sugar, as these foods are known to promote unhealthy levels of inflammation. Do eat lots of oily fish or plant oils, nuts and seeds, and plenty of fresh vegetables and berries; they are packed with nutrients and antioxidants that can help to reduce inflammation. Anti-inflammatories can also help. Devil’s Claw for example, a plant only found in the Kalahari Desert, has been used for many years to help reduce rheumatic, muscle and joint pain. Studies suggest that long-term use of Devil’s Claw is not only safe but may also lead to improvements in those with chronic lower back pain. A. Vogel’s Atrosan® Devil’s Claw tablets may be used as a rheumatism product for the relief of joint and muscular pain in adults and the elderly. For topical relief from inflammation you may wish to try an Arnica containing gel. Arnica is well-known for its homeopathic use for bumps and bruises. Fresh Arnica herb can also be very effective when applied topically. Finally, stay active. Regular, gentle exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight, which in turn lessens the stress you place on joints, helping to improve the pain of arthritis.

The usual start venue was unavailable due to the Covid-19 regulations, so after a rethink Barkby Hall was made available, thanks to the kindness of Mr and Mrs Pochin. The cars drove through the hall grounds to collect their route books, commemorative plaques and money-off vouchers for entry to Barnsdale Gardens, the final destination. Eventually, forty cars set of on the run’s 45-mile first leg, exploring the east of Leicestershire towards and around the Langtons, Eyebrook Reservoir, Launde Abbey, Knossington and Cold Overton, finishing at Gate’s Nursery for refreshments (and some shopping!). The gathered classic cars made a splendid sight in the car park. In their own time cars then set off for the shorter 23-mile second leg to Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland, where all forty cars successfully completed the journey to fill the overflow car park. Time, then, for the drivers to admire each other’s vehicles as well as visit the restaurant and shop, and take a tour of the gardens using the voucher for reduced price entry, through the generosity of Nick Hamilton. The day went really well, eliciting many congratulatory comments from participants, and thankfully the weather stayed dry throughout. Widespread support from members of the North Leicester MG Owner’s Club, the Daimler and Lanchester Owner’s club and drivers from as far afield as Burton-on-Trent, Nuneaton and Cheshire, ensured the run’s success. The icing on the cake was the £900 raised to assist the Rainbows Hospice in their invaluable work.

It was great news that as from the start of September we were able to move to Stage D of the Rugby Football Union’s Roadmap just leaving one letter to go until we are able to fully train for the forthcoming 2020/21 season.
Anstey WI
Article by Sheila Timms Anstey WI was founded in 1941, when it met in the Adult School and Institute on Church Lane. Later we met in the Memorial Hall, followed of course by the Jubilee Hall. More recently we were unable to meet for a while. Now we meet in each other’s gardens, although with winter approaching that may not be congenial. Hopes of meeting as normal again have been dashed by the introduction of the rule of six, but when we are able to, we would welcome new members. We are a lively, friendly group. Regular readers of this magazine will recall that we have been keeping in touch during the pandemic by WhatsApp, email and telephone, and have distributed goody bags for an afternoon tea party. A walking group is now well established, and many of us are still making handcrafted goods for charity even though the craft group has not been meeting. In September we were planning to have a speaker, but that fell through, so groups of six met in gardens, where they enjoyed a good natter, and signed paper flowers to be inserted into a 90th birthday card for former President Chris Figgins, who has moved to Turkey to live with her daughter. Chris has been ill for a long time and was very frail, but we are thrilled to see and hear that she is flourishing in the sunshine, and enjoying constant company.

This is the message received at Anstey RFC : ‘The reintroduction of contact training has been approved by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and moves the Return to Community Rugby Roadmap from Stage C to Stage D. The reinstatement of some contact activity is important to ensure players can continue to practice core skills and are able to start preparing and conditioning themselves appropriately as the game starts to return to normality with regular training and matches.’ With the start of the new season for Premiership rugby now not to far in the future, competitive rugby should filter down to our level not long after. Our constituent body, Leicestershire Rugby Union have been supporting local rugby with help and advice during the pandemic and now with useful equipment. Early in September, Peter Howard, RFU Council Member for Leicestershire and Rutland presented a Floor standing Hand Sanitiser Unit to our Chairman, Shane Frear for use at our Home ground off Link Road between Holgate Close and Martin High School. Something to note, this ground is leased to Anstey RFC Ltd and not a general playing or training field for other sports. Preparations at your local village club have been intense in recent weeks where we are keen to build on our top of the table finish to the 2019/20 season.. If you would like to get involved contact either our Club Coach and Chairman Shane Frear on 07725 642525 or Captain Graham Waring on 07764 461961 Unfortunately due to Rules of Six, 10pm Curfews and anything else coming our way our big 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner has had to be postponed again and we will announce a new date in due course for sometime in the Spring or Summer of 2021 The Club noticeboard is in The Coach & Horses - at the big screen end just round to the left inside the official entrance door from the Nook Visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey or our Facebook Group Page at www.facebook.com/groups/20694012567 for updated information.

Layered Meanings. A Group Exhibition By Members Of Artspace. Article by Judith Eason
G E GAMBLE & SONS INDEPENDENT FAMILY FUNERAL DIRECTORS —–––––––––– ESTABLISHED 1830 —–––––––––-
West Bridgford Library will be hosting a group exhibition of art work by ‘ArtSpace Loughborough’. This group of professional artists will exhibit work on the theme of “Layered Meanings” from November 17th until December 8th 2020 . 'Eco Warrior' Sally Reayer
'A Slip in time’ Pam Everard
‘Peace Freedom and Rest'
The theme “Layered Meanings” has been interpreted in various interesting, and thought provoking ways by the 19 artists taking part. Some have chosen to look at the theme in terms of layering of the painted surface, others by using words and phrases as a starting point to then develop the idea of different interpretations of those words through visual form. Painting the changing view from windows and using a historical figure re imagined as a present day eco warrior are other themes explored by individuals, another has used imagery from childhood. Some have used the natural world as their visual stimulus for developing imagery based on the earth and nature.
