Over £2000 has already been raised for the charities. She found the sky-dive experience “amazing, exhilarating and thrilling”, jumping from the aircraft at 14,000 feet [strapped to an instructor], plunging in free fall for about 45 seconds at a speed of about 120mph towards the earth, “struggling a little to breathe”, before feeling the sudden uplift as the parachute opened to begin the drift down, “floating for about five minutes”, to the airfield where she landed safely.

Our meetings continue into the autumn. Sunday at 2.30 on September 11th at the Mary Forryan Centre; our ‘Challenge Parkinson’s’ weekly exercises at 3.00 at the St. Francis Centre; dance and singing sessions at Elmesthorpe Village Hall on Friday afternoons; our monthly ‘get togethers’ at Dobbies at Stapleton on September 19th from 2.00 in the Restaurant Conservatory; and our Nordic Walking on the third Thursday of the month at 11.00 from Acorns Café at Burbage Common. We now have a monthly Carers Group on the third Tuesday each month at the same time as the exercise class. Various other events are being arranged too. We are definitely a busy group but we are always pleased to welcome new members, who often come along after reading articles like this one.

The demonstration will be held at the Amherst School, Gray Street, Loughborough LE11 2DZ from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Doors open at 7 pm. The venue is spacious and airy, there is parking within the school grounds, and new members and visitors can always be assured of a very warm welcome. Tickets for visitors, priced £5, may be bought on the door.
I visited Londis supermarket last Sunday, parked directly outside the shop, to pick up a box of beers and bottles of pop. The kind member of staff carried them to my car for me , which was great. I then noticed I had a flat tyre, this member of staff then very kindly said he would get a pump to pump up my tyre, which enabled me to get home safely. I was very moved by these two acts of kindness. Thank you Londis staff member.

Following our successful photographic exhibition in June, Anstey Local History Society has decided to hold another event next year; this time with photos of the 1970’s and 1980’s.
We have very few photos of the uniformed youth groups in the village at this time and even fewer photos of sporting teams.

The NP group are undertaking a ‘Call for Sites’ to give all villagers and landowners the opportunity to put land forward. A site selection process will then be undertaken led by an independent external consultant, to help determine the most suitable site or sites for future development based on local factors and housing need. During the first week of August the judges explored the streets of Anstey, judging front gardens for the Anstey in Bloom competition. Despite the challenges of the recent heat and dryness, many of our residents had managed to produce amazing, colourful displays; it must have taken a lot of TLC and hard work! On the 6th of August Councillor Ball, Booth and Cotton attended the Methodist Church Coffee Morning and held a Councillor Surgery. Several residents came to speak to them, mainly with problems which we will endeavour to solve or at least direct to the appropriate council department. It was good to be able to speak with residents and hear their views about the village, things that are happening and proposed changes. It was a successful morning and we hope to continue holding surgeries for the benefit of our residents.

Machinemachine.knitting saves a considerable amount of time but does require learning to operate the machines correctly. Most if not all hand knitting patterns can be worked up on a machine, either identically or in a similar design, but some are simpler to do by hand, whilst others are easier on a machine. Hand knitting patterns are designed to "flip" the fabric on every row so that the knitter consistently uses the dominant hand. However, machine knitting is consistently knit with the fabric facing the same way. Flat bed machines knit back and forth and circular machines knit continuously in the Leicestershireround.
Shepherdess and spinner Angela Dews gave a talk entitled “From Fleece to Finish.” When her husband asked what she wanted for Christmas ten years ago, she asked for a spinning wheel. Her wish was granted, but with it came a surprise bonus; sixteen sheep! Since then Angela has become very busy, and learned a lot, much of which she passed on to us.
We make no charge to members for this garden party, but we ask them to bring a prize for the raffle. By the end we have almost 100 prizes to be won and we have a quick-fire draw to decide the winners.. Eventually, we hope that everyone goes home with a prize.

A knitting machine is a device used to create knitted fabrics in a semi or fully automated fashion. There are numerous types of knitting machines, ranging from simple spool or board templates with no moving parts to highly complex mechanisms controlled by electronics. All, however, produce various types of knitted fabrics, usually either flat or tubular, and of varying degrees of complexity. Pattern stitches can be selected by hand manipulation of the needles, push buttons and dials, mechanical punch cards, or electronic pattern reading devices and computers.
Our annual summer garden party took place at the end of July and attracted around 100 members and friends. It was held at the home of our Chairman Mike Newcombe who has a splendid two-acre garden with wonderful views. The evening was beautifully warm and it was very pleasant to sit outside and enjoy the company of the other Theymembers.were

This was for demonstrations and talks. She regularly uses a more traditional type of wheel. Modern versions have no sharp points, so Sleeping Beauty would have nothing to fear these days! The audience was fascinated, and gathered round to watch closely and ask questions. A most enjoyable evening.
Comparison of machine knitting to hand knitting The fabric produced using a knitting machine is of a more even texture than flat knitting, hand-knitted fabric, which is particularly noticeable on large areas of plain stockinet stitch, and can be an advantage. Some stitch patterns (e.g., tuck stitches) are much easier to produce with a knitting machine. Others (e.g. garter stitch) can also be produced with machine knitting, but can take a little longer; however, this is still much faster than hand knitting. The standard gauge 200-needle machine can knit the finest yarns up to a good sport-weight (4ply UK), while the heavier yarns knit better on a mid-gauge or bulky knitting

As the monthly meeting of Anstey WI fell on president Anne Spanswick’s birthday, she shared it with us all by bringing Pimms and chocolate cake. Her generosity went down well.
Even for someone who is able to spin, there was plenty of new information. After shearing the fleece must be skirted, washed, carded or combed depending on whether the staple is long or short, then spun and plied before possibly being dyed, before it can be knitted or woven. for seasonal British grown flowers. He has been gardening all his life, but has lived near Chesterfield, Derbyshire for the past 20 years. Here, he devotes his acre garden to growing flowers and foliage for his demonstration needs.
The bouquets that Jonathan created were quite superb. In all of them he used different foliage to very good effect. The foliage included Pittosporum, Lilac, Eucalyptus, Physcocarpus, Sarcococca, and Privet to name a few. Different flowers were also added to each bouquets including Phlox, Echinops, Verbena, Sedum, Lavender, Hostas, Ferns, Helianthus, and many more. When talking about the plants he used, he also gave tips on the best ways to grow them and different cultivars to try.

He arrived with a huge amount of plant material, all from his garden. During the evening, he used this material to create several wonderful creations. Jonathan’s demonstration was enthralling. Standing on the stage surrounded by his home-grown flowers he put together three arrangements, whilst conversing with the audience in his humorous and friendly style.
He went through a delightful non-stop dialogue, with helpful tips, as he created a “Fragrance Bouquet” a “Colour arrangement” and an “Urn arrangement”. A top tip for all flower arrangers when cutting flowers from your own garden; take with you a bucket or bowl containing a small amount of water, always use a very sharp knife or hardened steel ‘flower snips’. These will give a ‘perfect’ cut causing less stress to the stem. Immediately place them in your container of water, this avoids any ‘airlock’ which would be detrimental to the life of your flower. A simple straight cut is all you need for the best results. The addition of a quality commercial flower food to the water, both when cutting and arranging, will keep your flowers in good order for a lot longer.

The Inspectors say there will be a ‘reflective pause’ to enable them to reach a position about the apportionment of the unmet need for both housing and employment and for the Council to respond as necessary, enabling any implications for the plan to be properly considered. Charnwood Borough Council has challenged the need for this further pause, as the Council feel it is in the best interests of the Borough to ensure the Local Plan is adopted as soon as possible. Charnwood Borough Council has launched a competition as part of the ‘Love the outdoors in Charnwood’ campaign to celebrate the Borough’s fantastic range of country parks, nature reserves and ancient Residentswoodlands.of
In my view, as I have previously stated, this is particularly bad news for our local area. Any delay in adopting the Local Plan will see more piecemeal development coming forward, because Charnwood Borough Council cannot demonstrate a five year housing land supply. That said, I still believe certain modifications to the Local Plan need to be in place, in line with my submissions to the Inspectors during the consultation process. These reflected on the large number of dwellings allocated to Anstey and the large development close to Woodthorpe that encroaches into the Woodhouse Parish. In my opinion, both these proposals will have serious consequences for the surrounding infrastructure and the wellbeing of local residents.

The Inspectors conducting the examination of the Charnwood Local Plan have provided a further update. As you will recall from my previous news items, the hearings were paused in July as the Inspectors wanted interested parties to have an opportunity to comment on the evidence which underpins the apportionment of Leicester’s unmet housing need. The competition is really heating up now, as we made it 4 out of 4 with an impressive win over our friends at Market Harborough, despite being outgraded on every board. There was a fabulous win for Matt Connor, with two creditable draws for Julian Tarwid and Boris Lazarov. If we win the next match away at Braunstone, the Cup is ours!
At this time the groups that are up and running include: Walking, Ride and amble and book groups, sewing , card making and dry crafts. For the singers there is the “come and sing” choir. The “garden visits group” have already visited a number of formal gardens and a trip to enjoy a bluebell wood and various local gardens centres, To get members up and active there is the ten pin bowling at Holywood bowl, Petanque on the piste at Mitchells field ,Croquet on the court at Milfield Road recreation ground, from early September weekly indoor bowls will be on offer at Mantle road comunity centre in Leicester. Other indoor groups are held in Anstey library include ; a Canasta school, mahjong, Table games where a wide variety of games is on offer and a Scrabble group and two further Canasta groups which are held in members homes. Around 90 members have recently met at Jubilee Hall for a cream tea. A successful coach trip with 30 members to Upton House Warwickshire has been organised by the National Trust Group, the next outing will be to Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire on 21st September, other travelling groups are the garden visitors, Military History and Heritage groups. Indoor bowls will be restarting on Thursday September 8th at Mantle Road Bradgate u3a hold a monthly members meeting at Jubilee Hall on the first Wednesday of the month, 2.30 PM here you can find the latest group information, listen to a wide variety of speakers and complete the afternoon with a tea or coffee. Membership is £14 for the 2022/23 period. Come and meet us and enjoy a sample monthly meeting . August is my quiet month, and this has enabled me as usual to catch up with some much needed reading, covering the Children’s Social Care Review Paper and the SEND paper (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), along with some high-level research into how we police the country and the changes in crimes that we can all be victims of.

I was delighted to welcome to County Hall the Police Force’s Road Policing Unit to show what equipment and skills they can use against criminal activity, just ahead of the last Police and Crime Panel meeting that I chair. In attendance we had a response car, an armed response vehicle, police motorcycle, the tactical support vehicle, and the drone team. We were educated about how these are all used within the force and watched a demonstration of the drone flying. The drone is capable of being used in many different scenarios but was most recently used to fly over the fires we have had locally to see the extent of the fires and where the high risks areas were.

I have received information from the highways team, that the re-location of the bus stop to Stadon Road from Leicester Road, Anstey, has suffered another delay. This work was due to be started on 21st August. The delay is due to electrical work that EON need to complete for the ‘Real Time Information’ boards. There is a delay in EON getting the correct approval from Western Power to work on their network.

We met at the impressive little museum, where Ken Hillier gave an accomplished summary of the town’s history. The name Ashby implies that it was a Danish settlement. The Zouch family, which originated from Brittany, supported the Norman invasion and became lords of the manor in about 1150. Ashby remained an unimportant place until the 1460s, when Edward IV gave control of the Midlands to his friend William Hastings. Hastings chose to make Ashby his headquarters and built a substantial castle on the site of the former manor house. The newly important town developed in a distinctive manner, with shops and inns lining Market Street and long, narrow “burgage plots” extending back from them to North Street and South Street. In the English Civil War, the Hastings family supported the King. The castle was besieged by Parliamentary forces and eventually surrendered. The defending force was allowed to leave honourably but the castle was slighted.
You probably know Ashby de la Zouch for its fine main street or perhaps for its castle but here is more to the town that meets the eye, as members of the Society discovered during a visit in August.

It started with learning to knit at school and then moved into weaving when, on a visit to Scotland, she was inspired by the patterns and colours of Harris Tweed. She then moved into spinning when she was encouraged by a group of like-minded 'woolly friends' she met at a monthly 'Woolly Day' meeting.
At 7.30pm on 20th September, we return to Thurcaston Memorial Hall. We hope as many of you as possible will come to share your memories of life in the two villages in past decades – or to listen to the recollections of others. Everyone is welcome and on this occasion there will be no visitors’ fee.

Christine recently bought two alpaca fleeces from Anstey Alpacas in Cropston and said she is currently experimenting, trying to turn them into the lovely tweedy yarns by mixing different fibres and is also having a go at dyeing - again drawing from ideas picked up on the mill tour. She showed us some examples and explained how difficult and lengthy the process is but said that while her woolly journey has slowed down because of it, she didn’t think it would totally end. Christine did, however, conclude her talk by stressing she would draw the line at acquiring her own flock of sheep!!

She started by telling us how, at the age of about eight, she learnt to knit at school. She would have to sit at her desk and knit a row and then take it up to the teacher to be inspected. If the same number of stitches were present she would be sent back to knit another row. Along with a bit more teaching from her mother and grannie, she developed a real liking for knitting. The first thing she really remembered knitting was a big baggy cardigan in the early 1960s when huge knitting needles seemed to be a fashion. It was in her school colour - bottle green and real chunky wool - nice and warm. Then followed the story of how she, along with three of her school friends, snuck out of school one lunch time and all ended up falling through ice on a local canal. Christine was the last to get out owing to her lovely chunky cardigan weighing her down. She was eventually rescued by a local shopkeeper with a long pole. She also remembered knitting a Mary Quant dress in the 1970s which she wore a lot to work and also lots of baby clothes and toys as her children came along, always being drawn to tweedy and textured wool which she would pick up in sales and charity shops. This, of course, was a familiar story to most women of a similar age as most ladies in the audience could knit and relate to it - knitting and dressmaking was actually cheaper than buying ready-made clothes. However, there the journey for most women ended.

“The Duke” will be shown on October 14th and lasts 96 minutes. Our October film is a delightful U.K. comedy crime drama, starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. This is an uplifting true story where an idealistic old-age pensioner steals a Goya masterpiece which he hides in his wardrobe! You will return home smiling.
Christine then acquired two rigid heddle weaving looms and set about weaving her own version of tweeds.
Before the Summer, we showed “Belfast” which was Sir Kenneth Branagh’s most personal film. It followed his own childhood In Belfast at the beginning of the Troubles in 1969. At Thurcaston after the film, we included bonus features about the making of this film & fascinating comments by Sir Kenneth and Dame Judi Dench.
She showed us some examples of the different designs she developed and samples of brooches, scarves, bags, cushion-covers and purses she had made. She also had ‘a dabble’ at spinning with a drop spindle using some of the small bits of fleece she acquired on a visit to Orkney. This proved to be very slow, so during lockdown she ‘bit the bullet’ and bought a modern spinning wheel and various types of fleece and taught herself to spin inspired by what she had learnt from her tour of the Harris Tweed mill. Also during lockdown, she really managed to indulge her hobby of knitting, weaving and spinning. Many shawls, scarves, cushion-covers, hats, gloves, socks etc. were produced from her wool stash which had grown over the years resulting in two huge bags of all manner of woolly stuff.

The Industrial Revolution largely passed the town by, with developments happening at Swadlincote and Coalville instead, but in about 1800 Ashby unexpectedly became a spa. There was a brine spring at Moira but, because of nearby coal mines, no-one wanted to visit it there so instead the water was hauled to Ashby in tanks. The Ivanhoe Baths were built, named after the popular novel by Walter Scott, which had just been published and was partly set in the area. Although Thomas Cook’s second excursion was from Leicester to Ashby Spa, in the end it was the railways that put an end to the venture by making seaside holidays possible. Eventually some industry did come to Ashby, including biscuit- and soap-making. Many of the factory workers and their families were housed in narrow “courts” crammed into the old burgage

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society
Holidaying aboard a glamorous Egyptian river steamer, Hercule Poirot, played by Sir Kenneth Branagh, is caught up in a terrifying search for a murderer. With stars Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and Letitia Wright, there are many unexpected additional twists to the original Agatha Christie mystery.
Fast forward to retirement and many visits to Scotland and the Outer Hebrides where Christine fell in love with Harris Tweed. She would buy pieces and set to work turning these lovely bits of fabric into glasses cases, pouches, bags etc. and lovingly sewing on the authentic labels supplied with the fabric, examples of which were produced. Christine then fancied weaving her own tweedy fabric; enrolled on a couple of weaving workshops and managed to buy quite a bit of the wool after a tour of one of the Harris Tweed mills on a visit to the Outer Hebrides. Christine then gave us a brief description of the processes the fleeces (which had to be from Cheviot sheep) go through - the washing, dyeing, carding and blending of colours before being spun into cones of beautiful coloured tweedy yarns ready to be sent out to the weavers on the Isle of Harris to be turned into the famous cloth. The woven cloth is then returned to the mill for inspecting and mending of flaws before being washed, fulled and pressed. Only then would it be stamped with the authentic Harris Tweed label and rolled into bales of fabric ready to be sent out to customers and shops to fulfil their orders. There it would be turned into all manner of clothes
