PHOTO: Leader of Ashby Town Council John Coxon, Ashby Mayor Jim Hoult, and NWLDC deputy leader Alison Smith MBE, at the site where work has now begun to extend the car park by 52 spaces.

Work Begins To Create 52 New Spaces In Ashby Car Park Contractors have started work to extend North Street car park in Ashby de la Zouch providing a much-needed extra 52 parking spaces for the town. The extension to North Street car park is being built by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) as part of the its £1.1 million contribution to the Ashby Neighbourhood Plan. It will help address the need for additional parking spaces in the town, handing a boost to its retail, leisure and cultural offerings. The wider plan for the town, created by Ashby Town Council on behalf of its community, aims to improve the historic market town’s culture and leisure offer and celebrate the wealth of attractions it is home to, including the popular leisure centre with its unique Ashby Lido, museum, The Venture Theatre and various green spaces. While the impact on shoppers, visitors and leisure centre users will be kept to a minimum, the capacity of the current North Street car park will be reduced temporarily at different points in the project. The work will also require road closures at different stages. Members of the public can keep up to date on changes to the car park as the work continues at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ashby and on social media. Work began on the site in November with the demolition of the disused health centre to prepare the ground for the extended car park. An attractive redesign of the entrance to Hood Park Leisure Centre will be part of the next phase of the scheme. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We’re delighted that our £1.1 million investment is bringing these much needed parking spaces to Ashby, which will enable people to more easily enjoy its fantastic attractions and facilities. Our contractors will be working as fast as they can and we appreciate everyone’s patience while the work is ongoing.” Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services for North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “The additional spaces and redesign of this part of town support a wider aspiration to improve Ashby, which is a vibrant and enjoyable place to be. The extra parking will bring immediate benefits to everyone in the town and help attract new visitors to enjoy what we have to offer.” Councillor John Coxon, Leader of Ashby Town Council, said: “I’m delighted the district council is working with us to make these much needed improvements to the town. The new parking will open up a lot of opportunities for us in our efforts to make Ashby even more vibrant and successful than it already is. I’m looking forward to seeing the extended car park open and available for people to use when visiting businesses in the town.”

Community On A High After Funding Secured For Climbing Wall

Shire Grant scheme, Friends of Oakthorpe Village, the village youth club and Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe and Acresford Parish Council and the Tesco Bags of Help programme, to raise the remaining £10,000 required.

The communities of Measham and Oakthorpe are both celebrating after receiving funding for new facilities through North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) £20,000-forSeven scheme.

Colin Manifold, Chair of the Measham Leisure Centre Management Committee, said: “This will be another great asset to Measham Leisure Centre going forward and once again we say thank you to NWLDC for the £20,000-for-Seven funding that has enabled us to install this great facility for all to use.

Measham Community Leisure Centre landed £10,000 from the council and a further £10,000 from the Minorca Community Fund to build a new climbing wall at the centre. The new wall in the main hall of the leisure centre will be available to hire out and provides an exciting opportunity for people to try a new and different sport. Consultations carried out by the leisure centre had identified a need for more activities in the community especially for the 14+ age group. The new climbing wall will help to meet this requirement. The NWLDC funding comes from the £20,000-for-Seven scheme, which allocates money to community groups looking to improve what they offer to people living in the district. Also to benefit recently has been Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe and Acresford Parish Council, which received £10,000 from NWLDC. This money has been used to transform an existing changing room at Oakthorpe Community Leisure Centre into a community multi-media room. The media room will offer bespoke sessions for the local youth club and will be available for other groups to use too. The project also received funding from Leicestershire County Council’s

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Community groups continue to do a wonderful job across North West Leicestershire in providing activities for residents. I’m very proud that our £20,000-for-Seven scheme supports these groups so that they can offer better facilities for the benefit of the entire community.” Councillor Louise Richardson, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for Shires grants, said: “The Shire grants fund enables us to invest in communitybased initiatives that support those in need across the county. We want to encourage groups to come forward and apply.” Bob Walsh, Chairman of the Minorca Community Fund Committee, said: “The monies from the Minorca Community Fund were used to support many various projects in the three surrounding parishes, each one deemed to be beneficial to the community. The Measham climbing wall project was one such project which we were pleased to support”. The NWLDC £20,000-for-seven scheme has seen £240,000 handed out to various projects after the public voted on which they felt were most deserving of help.

Ashby Santa Run Raises £11600 For Local Charities! Ashby Castle Rotary Club have announced another record breaking year from the 2017 Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk. Over 1400 Santa’s signed up to the event and this combined with the sponsorship from many local businesses has helped the Rotary Club raise £11644.36 for charity. The 2017 event was the third and biggest that the Rotary Club has organised, growing from 625 Santa’s taking part in 2015 and 1100 in 2016. The event took place as part of the Ashby Christmas Event weekend on Sunday 3rd December in glorious sunshine where the sight of 1400 Santa’s turned the town of Ashby red.

WI Local Groups Meeting Hosted By Ashby Spa WI Ashby Spa WI took local WI groups ‘Around the World’ on Wednesday evening as hosts of the annual Northern Lights WI meeting. The theme this year was inspired by the Speaker and author Jacki Hill-Murphy ‘Adventuress and Rock Chick Explorer’ who has recreated the journeys of earlier women explorers. Her enthusiasm for travel was equalled by the enthusiasm for fun from WI guests at this extravaganza. National costumes were worn by many of the guests and together with room decorations of flags, bunting, travel posters and world maps, a magnificent international effect was created. Throughout the evening various travel related games and activities were enjoyed including a short quiz, entertaining competitions and free bottle tombola. An ‘International Corner’ of unusual hats and accessories to try on produced a fascinating selection of selfies. To continue the travel theme, members were inspired with an amazing selection of food tasters from Around the World such as Indian samosas, French brie, Spanish tapas, Chinese spring rolls and English cream scones then all accompanied by the essential Bucks Fizz. Attention to detail and careful planning by dedicated WI ladies made this a fun evening from start to finish with members meeting friends old and new from across the region. Ashby Spa WI would like to thank everyone who came and joined in the fun and made it a journey to remember. Please visit the WI website for photos and details of next year’s event which will be hosted by Breedon on the Hill WI.

The four main charities being supported by the 2017 event were Hospice Hope, Staunton Harold Sailability Trust, Rainbows Children’s Hospice and Wishes 4 Kids. Representatives from all four charities attended a Rotary Club breakfast meeting to be presented with cheques by Santa Fun Run committee Chairman Kevin Sanders and Club President Carol Eyley. Hospice Hope and Sailability both received cheques for £2800 with Rainbows and Wishes 4 Kids receiving cheques for £1400. The remaining funds raised will be distributed by the Rotary Club to their other supported charities. Kevin Sanders who leads the organising committee for the Santa Fun Run said “Well what a fantastic day we had and we were blessed with fine weather again. The sight of those 1400 Santa’s running around the course and then filling the towns pubs, café’s and street market after the event was something special and for many marked the real start of the festive season. Raising nearly £12,000 thanks to the brilliant support of the participants and sponsorship from companies and organisations was a wonderful result. We know all of the four main charities well and can be confident that the monies raised will be used effectively for the benefit of local people”. The Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk will be returning again in 2018 and is planned to be held on Sunday 2nd December. The Rotary Club are encouraging any local businesses or organisations who are interested in getting involved in supporting the 2018 event to contact Kevin Sanders for further information on 07808 095609 or by email at kevindereksanders@gmail.com. Interested in finding out more about Rotary? If you would like to come along to the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle please contact our secretary Chris Knight at enquiry@chrisknightspeaker.co.uk or visit www.ribi.org

Ivanhoe College S.T.E.A.M. Show sponsored by Rolls Royce On Thursday 22nd February Ivanhoe College hosted their second annual S.T.E.A.M. Show event; this year with sponsorship from Rolls Royce. At the end of 2017 students were invited to submit proposals of projects they wanted to investigate under the categories of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths and working either in small teams or individually they went away to develop their projects and to work on a presentation for the Show. After setting up their stands in the morning the students involved hosted lots of our Year 7 classes and talked them through their work, or guided them to use their hands on activities. The youngest students in our school were enthralled at the projects with many expressing a desire to get involved in next year’s competition. In the afternoon each team had 2 minutes to present their project to the panel of judges; to demonstrate to them their knowledge on the subject, the amount of original work they had put in and the findings of their research. Prizes were to be presented at the official evening event. Ivanhoe College were pleased to welcome representatives from Rolls Royce, Triumph, 3M and Siemens as well as Governors, Parents and staff to the event. The evening was a real celebration of the students’ hard work and dedication. Visitors got a chance to browse all of the stands and speak to the students about their work. We had many comments about the students’ maturity; that it was hard to believe that they were only ages 1114 years old. Ros Smith from 3M said, “I attended the first S.T.E.A.M. Show last year, but this year is bigger and better!!! The quality of the students work is absolutely fantastic’. At 6pm we gathered to discover who had won the awards, Subject Leader for Computing, Mr Thornewill said, “It has been an almost impossible task to decide the winners of tonight’s awards, the standard has been so high. It’s been really pleasing to see students take a passion from a S.T.E.A.M. subject and really pursue it as their project. Their unrelenting enthusiasm is infectious, they are a great advocates for all the wonderful work done at Ivanhoe.” The Best in Show Award, this year named, the ‘Rolls Royce Pioneering Award’, was presented by Mark McIntosh and Amy Derbyshire from Rolls Royce. Mark said, “I’m honestly astounded at the quality of the projects we’ve seen tonight. I can see a direct synergy with the work some of the students are doing with computing, design and science, and what we’re doing at Rolls Royce. I can’t believe the depth of knowledge the students have, and the creativity and originality of their ideas is what we need, in the UK, from engineers in the future.” As part of their sponsorship Amy announced to the students, and their families, that the winners of the awards were invited to come to Rolls Royce on a visit, as their guests, for a tour around the head office and a chance to meet some of their engineers and designers. The excitement in the room was immense!

The awards winners were as follows: Computing Award – Alfie Ropson who created a working model of an in house security system he had developed and coded using Raspberry Pie. Design Award – Hannah and Rachel Miness who investigated prosthetics through the ages and created their own working prototypes of hand prosthetics. Science Award (Double Award Winners) – Henry Freeman with a practical demonstration of the density of different liquids. Zara Platts and Keira Pagett with their science of superheroes investigation and a computer coded quiz to determine which superhero you are most like. Self Manager Award – Leah Massingham who researched sports injuries and developed athletic clothing with heated patches to aid recovery. Creativity Award – Alice Hall and Ruby Webster with a sensitive and thought provoking research project into Depersonalization Disorder and Derealisation Disorder. Team Work Award Kindly sponsored by Tesco Ashby – Sam Manning and James Gravett with a computer coding project The Rolls Royce Pioneering Award for Best in Show was awarded to Year 8 student Daisy Hainsworth. She impressed the judges with an original design project for a product called the Hydro Buddy. Daisy had identified an need for dancers and athletes to be monitored and reminded to drink water during exercising and had built a computer coded prototype model of such a device to be worn on the wrist. In addition she had done further scientific research into the amounts of hydration needed for different exercises as well as based on the physical makeup such as BMI and the impact on hydration. Her presentation to the judges was confident and her informative display presented her work impeccably. Congratulations to all of the winners. Subject Leader for Design, Ms Konig said, “I've been blown away by the quality of the work I've seen this evening - our young people have worked so hard on their projects and their passion and enthusiasm has just shone through. They present their work with such confidence which makes me so proud to have been a part of the event.” and Stephanie Morton from Triumph said, “It’s been a real pleasure to come to the S.T.E.A.M. show tonight, I’ve been really impressed. We’d love to work more with the school in the future.”

There are hundreds of quotes about economists and most of them are derogatory, for example, ask five economists and you’ll get 5 different answers, 6 if one went to Harvard. So please forgive my scepticism about the recent leaked growth predictions which have leaked from the Department for Exiting the EU. These are growth predictions by the same unnamed economists (despite my written questions asking for them to be named), who said a vote to leave would lead to an immediate recession and the loss of 800,000 jobs. In the event, the opposite occurred, indeed if it was said immediately prior to the vote in 2016, that in the next 18 months, the economy overall would grow by 2.8%, that employment would be up by 400,000, that manufacturing would be up by 4%, that exports would surge and that public borrowing would fall it its lowest level for 10 years, if those of us who were campaigning for a Leave Vote has predicted this before the referendum it would have been dismissed as fanciful Leave propaganda. When we hear constant revisions for annual economic growth throughout the year, the idea that you can forecast over a 15 year period is laughable. Think back 15 years to 2003 and who would have forecast the credit crunch, great recession and the rise of social media and mobile technology. The previous 15 years saw the emergence of the internet, the big bang and the fall of communism. None of which could have been predicted with any degree of certainty. Indeed only last week this year’s GDP growth predicted was increased again to 1.8% up from an original 1.4% which indicates that the original Treasury forecast was underestimating this year’s economic growth by almost 30%. On the subject of 10-15 year forecasting however, the European Commission itself has estimated that 90% of global growth over this time will be outside the European continent. With that in mind, one has to ask ,where is all this economic growth within the single market that we are going to be missing out on over the next decade and a half? In fact there is some considerable debate about the actual positive effect the single market has had on UK growth. In the 2 decades before we joined the EEC, the UK economy grew by two thirds and then only grew by a half in the two decades after we joined. The EU enthusiasts often cite is was joining the EU that saved the UK from being the

sick man of Europe however I believe it was the reforms of the then Thatcher Government that delivered that prosperity, something we are still enjoying today with unemployment rates approximately half of the EU average. The UK has contributed hundreds of billions to the EU budget over the past 4 decades, money the UK has had to borrow and pay interest on. This for the privilege of buying more from EU Countries than we sell to them. Europe is the only part of the world we buy more from than we sell to. Have we really been getting value for money for our membership? This week the Prime Minister has been to China where UK exports have risen by 25% in the past year. There is no question of the UK paying China for the privilege of selling our goods to them. The Treasury analysis did not consider the possibility of a bespoke deal. To reiterate, we buy more from the EU than we sell them, have agreed payments of billions of pounds as part of the divorce arrangement and we are the 3rd biggest Country in Europe with 3 million EU citizens living here. We are not Norway or Canada so it is in everyone’s interest that we work out a free trade deal and quickly. The longer it is left through transition, the less leverage we have for the negotiation. There is no point in paying the EU lots of money for a worse deal than trading under World Trade Organisation terms. I would also point out that Europe relies on the British military and our intelligence services for its security and defence , something we provide in our own interest and theirs, without sending them a bill for it. I believe there is a negativity within the civil service and the establishment in general surrounding Brexit which is evidenced by their pre referendum analysis, and if those same economists, who the Treasury refused to name, are those continuing to develop forecasts, then in my view they are more than likely to view future scenarios which are open to interpretation, in a negative rather than a positive way. The Prime Minister must stick to the terms she set out in her Lancaster House speech if we are to achieve the full benefits of Brexit and treat with caution those who have wrongly forecast disaster in the past and whom have spent a career taking a lead from the EU.

National Housing Crisis When Prime Minister Theresa May spoke of a national crisis in housing earlier this month, she claimed the answer was to overhaul the planning system. However, her most senior Tory Councillor, Gary Porter, Chair of the Local Government Association, seemed to have heard it all before and in a rebuke to the Prime Minister, said that nothing will happen unless we build more council houses. My Labour colleagues on North West Leicestershire District Council couldn’t agree more, and so we submitted a motion to this month’s Full Council calling for an accelerated building programme of suitable social housing, to provide some of the 750+ people on the Council’s waiting list with a secure home. At February’s meeting, we asked for figures on the net change to the Council housing stock in the current year and over the last seven years. The figures showed the Council losing a net 206 properties over that period, with most of the losses coming through the Right to Buy. New build properties totalled just 6. Clearly that balance has to change, otherwise the crisis will surely get worse, not better. So what can the Council do? Well, for a start the Council has £16 million borrowing capacity which it could allocate immediately to fund new housing. The Council could also increase its use of compulsorily purchase powers to buy and renovate privately owned properties which have been left empty or in disrepair. The motion also calls on the Council to lobby the Government to reform the Right to Buy, lift restrictions on the re-investment of £5 million from council house sales and relax HM Treasury rules on Council borrowing for newbuild housing. The issue could not be more straightforward: providing homes for people who desperately

need one. Let’s hope the Council follows our lead and does something to make a real difference. New Road Schemes The County Council are planning to make road safety improvements on the bend of Leicester Road, Measham, on the approach to Gallows Lane junction, following a series of accidents. The proposals include additional chevron signs on the approaches to the bend, Reduce Speed Now plates, signs for an advisory speed limit for the north western approach to the bend and additional SLOW carriageway markings. I am reliably informed the works are expected to be completed by this summer. Leicester Road, Measham is also scheduled for much needed carriageway patching repair work on the 18th April. This will require a full road closure and there will be a press release with full details nearer the time. Queensway House Site I have been continuing to press the case for the derelict Queensway House to be redeveloped along with the land at the back, formerly an orchard. The owner of this land has submitted a series of plans, which in my view are unsatisfactory in terms of design and access. The latest one came before planning this month. I took the opportunity to attend the planning committee and repeated calls for the District Council and developer to come up with a joint plan covering both sites, which would make possible a good quality scheme. I’ve spoken to other local councillors and we all agree that with the site being near the centre of Measham, it would be ideal for bungalows, suitable for elderly and disabled residents. In time, I hope the developer will come to realise the benefits of working together with the Council on such a scheme.
