SINGING REALLY IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH!

It may look and sound like simple singing, but only now are its benefits being realised.

W

e are tapping into one of the greatest things of our culture that is the whole tradition of choral singing.

Professor of Music at Canterbury Christ Church University, Grenville Hancox, has teamed up with health professional, Professor Stephen Clift to run a research centre for Arts and Health. ‘There are different kinds of issues effecting different groups in society, but singing is a kind of universal activity that people can engage in from birth onwards, literally.’ They recently invited Dr Maria Sandgren, a Swedish psychologist, to present the results of a new study. The study was completed last year with 218 choral singers in Stockholm. Maria measured their emotional state before and after singing. And the results were quite unbelievable. ‘We could see that every positive emotion increased. I mean, the intensity, like "excited, alert, hopeful, relaxed, harmonic, to be present." One might say that the positive emotions increased a lot, but the negative emotions decreased even more, and pain decreased enormously.’ ‘It would seem we're pretty good at the MOT-type activities in health, we can replace the hip and that's great, but it's very difficult to replace the emotional heart. We have to look at other ways of doing that.’ Choral singing enables you to hear a sound produced from your own mouth that then is reverberated by others in your group and together you produce a magnificent huge sound. ‘We could also see that they felt more together after the choral singing and also less alone.’ Choral singing is definitely a very social phenomenon and the research appears to prove it. Even though many people feel they're not able to sing, with sufficient encouragement everybody can sing, it costs nothing and it can have very dramatic and very rapid effects on people's mood state.

Still not convinced ? Here are some quotes from the Shepshed Singers: “When I was teaching, I'd always come home absolutely drained. Wednesday choir practices were the highlight of my week as the music always took one into a different world - one of relaxation, calm and peace. Never failed to sleep well after a choir practice!” “When I sit in the Beaumanor Air Raid Shelter when the kids are really scared (some in tears) we always sit together and sing. Run Rabbit, Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Mayor, The Ovaltinies Song etc. Kids who have used words like 'petrified, terrified,...' to describe their feelings during the raid always come out smiling, skipping and laughing after the songs have lifted them out of their sadness and fear.” “On a blissfully sunny warm summer's day when you are strolling lazily through the fields or languishing in a boat on a gentle river. What does you almost automatically do - sing or hum a favourite tune. Our senses are fine tuned into music whether we are good at singing or not.” “For me singing certainly raises the mood, as it necessitates complete concentration and therefore provides a break from worrying: I find it impossible to worry and sing at the same time. A focus outside everyday activities brings relief and relaxation. The deep breathing must also benefit health, as I can think of no other activity where I have to consciously control breathing and expand the lungs to the same extent. Presumably this physical activity releases endorphins, which bring us back to improved mood.” “I find singing beneficial to ones breathing as it expands the chest and abdominal muscles, and gives you a feeling of well being. It's good to get together in a choir with like minded people and have made many of friends through this. It also stimulates the mind by continuing to learn new songs, not only in English, but in many other languages too.”

COALVILLE & WHITWICK SUPER SLIMMERS BRING FESTIVE CHEER TO FAMILIES

After seeing an appeal on Facebook from Jason Manford for donations of advent calendars to be put into Food Banks Sharon Dawson, Slimming World Consultant for the Coalville and Whitwick groups asked her members if they would be prepared to help with this. Not only did they donate 25 advent calendars to the Trussell Trust Food Bank box at the Hall Lane Methodist Church in Whitick they asked if other items would be needed to help families celebrate Christmas a little bit more. Sharon spoke to the Marlene Reid Centre who support local families and asked what they could do. As they have the annual Toy Run it was decided

that a package of chocolate santas, selection boxes, Christmas cards, Christmas crackers and Christmas puddings to add a bit extra to the Christmas spirit. Sharon says “Members of my Whitwick and Coalville Slimming World groups have really embraced supporting this appeal and have been more than happy to donate these items to bring some Christmas cheer to local families. The night when everything was brought together to hand over to The Marlene Reid Centre I was truly touched by their generosity, even if they did think I was being cruel having 2 tables full of chocolate in the room with them.”

SEASONAL TENSION FINAL STRAW FOR MANY, CLAIMS FAMILY LAW EXPERT A miserable Christmas break after a bad 2014 will see couples heading to the solicitors to seek divorces, claims Coalville’s leading law firm. Kathryn Hicklin, a family law expert, at QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank said that often the festive season is the final straw in unstable relationships. “Christmas sadly is a time that brings problems into the spotlight,” she said. “It is the time of the year when a secret affair becomes harder to cover because of family commitments, and also a time when disenchanted couples reflect and some decide they want a new life. When you add in drink fuelled rows and financial worries due to the commercial cost, it demonstrates why the early part of a New Year is a busy one for family lawyers,” she added. She said the tales of painful Christmases are often cited when divorce cases get underway.

She added that QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank is well placed to help due to their experience in the area and ability to treat each case on its own merits. “Going through a marriage break up is difficult, which sometimes gets worse before it can get better,” she said.

“When we talk to those who wish to separate we hear tales where couples do their best for the sake of the family to create the best Christmas possible, but this becomes hopeless,” she said.

“However, what all our clients share is that they are going through one of the toughest times of their lives and we take this into consideration, so we can offer the required level of support through this time of change,” she added.

“Families spend more time together at this time of year and if there are tensions it can make for an extremely unpleasant situation.”

Anybody wishing to talk to QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank about divorce or separation can do so by calling 01530 510666.

SPICED CARROT AND LENTIL SOUP VEGETARIAN AND LOW FAT

INGREDIENTS • 2 tsp cumin seeds • Pinch chilli flakes • 2 tbsp olive oil • 600g carrots, washed and coarsely grated (no need to peel) • 140g split red lentils • 1l hot vegetable stock (from a cube is fine) • 125ml milk (use almond or soya milk if a vegan meal is required) • Plain yogurt (again soya is fine) to serve

METHOD Heat a large saucepan and dry-fry the cumin seeds and chilli flakes for 1 min, or until they start to jump around the pan and release their aromas. Remove half of the seeds from the pan and set aside. Add the oil, carrot, lentils, stock and milk to the pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for around 15 mins until the lentils have swollen and softened. Puree the soup with a stick blender or in a food processor until smooth (or leave it chunky if you prefer). Season to taste and finish with a spoonful of yogurt and a sprinkling of the reserved toasted spices. Best served with warmed naan breads.

TOWN CENTRE ICE-BOUND AGAIN A shower of Boxing Day snow coated the main roads and pavements of Coalville town centre with a treacherous layer of trodden ice. Days later, with ice still thick on the footpaths, residents and town centre Councillors were furious at the lack of resilience being shown by County Highways and the District Council.

Labour’s business lead, Cllr John Geary is annoyed, “After all the hard work being done by the Town Team to bring customers into Coalville, the town centre was left treacherous and ice-bound throughout the crucial postChristmas trading season.”

Frustrated by the lack of action, County Councillor Dr Terri Eynon said “I have raised the issue of volunteer Snow Wardens at the Highways Forum two years running. Still nothing has been done.” Her husband Cllr John Legrys agrees, “The personal and economic cost of sending just one person to hospital with a fracture, adding to the pressures on A&E, is considerable. Both Councils shelve residents’ complaints about this as soon as the snow melts. Resilience planning is a duty of the District Council and I am going to pursue this issue at the highest level”.

SNIBSTON PANTO COMPETITION WINNERS Congratulations to Trish Oliff and Emma Harper winning the competition. We hope you and everyone enjoyed the Panto and thank you for entering the competition.

FROSTY, FOGGY FIRST PLACE FOR HERMITAGE HARRIERS Sunday 4th January 2015 saw the third fixture of the cross country league get underway at Mount Sinai in Staffordshire. Despite a hard frost and foggy conditions, Hermitage Harriers romped home with all three teams securing first place in their respective leagues. The Harriers now hold the top spots in division one for both the men’s and combined teams and first place in division two for the ladies team.

Twenty eight intrepid Harriers tackled the challenging running conditions across a demanding five mile course. For the third consecutive XC race, Mia Weston and Tony Woodward were the first female and male Harriers over the line. The ladies team was completed by Zoe Sewter in 22nd position and Katie Smith in 28th. For the men, an 11th place finish from Jason Williams and 26th place from Paul Gregory secured the team’s success. Hermitage Harriers, known as the Silver Donkeys on account of their silver racing colours, have had a highly successful cross country season so far. With the start of the Leicestershire Road Racing League just weeks away, it seems that silver could be the new gold!

It’s not often I get a phone call regarding a potential story that hooks me instantly, but this is a rare one that did! Deana Wildgoose, the manager for the Sir John Moore Foundation called me up before Christmas to see if I’d be interested in featuring an article showcasing the fantastic foundation and everything they have to offer, I’m sure you’ll agree it would have been a shame to let this article slip past!

Heart to heart; Leicestershire's Hidden Treasure Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century designed a building in Leicestershire that is still in use today – where is it? Where can you go to school; attend film club; take part in an archaeological dig; perform at a band night and hold your wedding? The answer? Appleby Magna! In the heart of the Leicestershire countryside lies a magnificent building commissioned by Sir John Moore in 1697. Sir John was born in Appleby. He was a passionate supporter of emancipation through education and good health and he was the second son of the squire of Appleby. Sir John made his own way in the world, amassing a fortune by trading lead. He was Lord Mayor of London in 1681, and a Master of the Grocers Company. He was a dedicated philanthropist and his own financial success was shared for the benefit of his fellow citizens. He made substantial investments in his home village to better the heart mind and soul of “the gentlemen of all England”, by building the Sir John Moore School in Appleby and in Christ's Hospital in London; both commissions for his good friend Sir Christopher Wren. Sir John and Lady Moore did not have children and the building in Appleby was put into the care of a family led charitable foundation. Descendants of Sir John and Lady Moore have always served as

Trustees. The beating heart of Sir Johns legacy is as alive today, as it was in 1697. The Trustees now as in 1697 are accountable for ensuring the success of the building as an environment that inspires learning and is maintained in excellent order. In 2004 the Trustees secured £2million in grants and donations to restore the building for the next generation of children. The refurbishment of this Grade 1 listed building ensured all three floors were brought back into use. Stepping through the ironwork gates is a step into the 17th Century. You will find a 21st century Village School. 140 pupils are taking their first steps into an education that parents, the village and Ofsted love. The ground floor is dedicated to the village primary school, as well as the larger rooms on the second floor and the majority of the grounds, providing outdoor space to play and compete. In order to enable every child to realise their potential and take up citizenship the Trustees must to continue to look after the building. A museum showcasing Victorian education is on the top floor and two elegant flats for rent, one with a rooftop garden. The original stables are converted to create a vibrant space that houses the foundation office; the hub of the charity’s operations. Adjacent to the stables is a bijou Coffee Shop with stately outside

seating. In the cellars is a licenced bar and recording studio for hire. One three-story wing is let as office space for local businesses with their own separate access. Both the regular upkeep and planned maintenance works require investment. The small team of Foundation staff generate the income that helps to sustain this inspirational and aspirational place. A big part of this is sharing the space with families to hold significant events, parties, weddings and celebrations. Holding a wedding or a party at Sir John Moore is affordable and grand. This unique venue delivers bespoke packages at completive rates. The enjoyment of guests who fall in love with this place makes a huge contribution to maintaining the building and site. 2014 marked ten years of success from our 2004 restoration. One thing is for sure, if Sir John Moore were here today he would be pretty proud that his legacy continues today, as innovative as it was over 300 years ago, to support and inspire all of us. We need at least £20,000 a year simply to maintain the fabric of this historic building. If you are inspired by our story, you can help by sharing your celebration with us in this unique venue: simply contact the office on 01530 273629 or email deana.sirjohnmoore@gmail.com

After reading the article I have done some research of my own and discovered that there is much more the Foundation offers Leicestershire. This is merely a taster and it’s certainly wet my appetite! If you want to find out more about this amazing place go to www.sirjohnmoore.org.uk. We hope to bring you more on 21st century education at Sir John Moore and 21st century inspiration from internationally celebrated educationalists who are as inspired as I am by what's happening here

DRIVING AT NIGHT, HOW WELL DO YOU SEE? As the long winter nights are drawing in I would like to highlight some simple steps you can take to ensure that you see as well as possible while driving your car. Millions of British drivers admit that they find it harder to see clearly when driving after dark and it’s a fact that more road accidents occur at night than during the day. Common night driving problems include blurred vision, difficulty focusing and dazzle or flare. Low light levels at night cause the pupil of the eye to become larger and this can accentuate any focusing errors – no matter how minor – causing blur. At night it’s therefore more important than ever to wear a pair of spectacles or contact lenses with an up-to-date prescription. For many people haloes and reflections around lights and headlamps can make their eyes feel uncomfortable while driving. The most

common cause is a dirty windscreen (often on the inside as well as the outside) or worn-out wiper blades, although scratched or dirty spectacles can be just as bad. Also, reflections from the surface of spectacle lenses can sometimes cause multiple images of lights at night. If you notice these, effective antireflection lens coatings are available. Older people often find night driving particularly stressful. With increasing age, the lens of the eye tends to yellow, reducing vision clarity, but major discomfort from glare can be caused by cataracts – a clouding of the eye lens which requires specialist treatment. If you are affected by oncoming headlights, try concentrating on the nearside kerb as you drive – but remember to slow down! • Never wear dark or tinted lenses for night driving • Keep a clear view on the road at night • Make sure you have regular eye examinations • Always wear a pair of glasses or contact lenses with an up-to-date prescription • Keep a spare pair of glasses in the car if possible • Don’t use tinted lenses, but have them anti-reflection coated if necessary • Keep your windscreen clean inside and out and check your wiper blades for wear • Check your car’s lights are working

Last, the Hugglescote Tree Choir did a small performance for us. They sang beautifully, conducted by school teachers Emily Wortley and Jonathan Nash.

A large stone was gently laid in the park, supplied kindly by Bardon Quarry and a plaque bearing all fifty names donated. The names of the men were called out all indivdually followed by the last post by a young man playing it on his bugle.

We moved up to Hugglescote WMC and had cakes and drinks, followed by a performace from the Coalville Community Choir. Two of our own students, Helena Meadows (8B) and tara Reynolds (8R) were involved in this. It was a fantastic day!

L.B.P.

The relatives were all given a ribbon, bearing the name of their loved one. They were asked to tie it to a tree of their choice around the park.

PANTOMIME DICK WHITTINGTON Every Christmas, Newbridge holds a Pantomime starring our very own Newbridge students. Yet again we have not failed to impress our audidence with thus year’s Pantomime - Dick Whittington, starring Alex Bentley, 8R, as Dick Whittington. Many students this year joined our group, having never experenced the spotlight before. Others have their expertise from previous experience in the Performing Arts subject. As a group we have learnt so many new skills. From the people behind it all - Mr Little, our Music and Performing Arts Teacher, Miss Hewkins, our Drama and English teacher and, not to forget, Miss Sheppard, our very talented Dance Teacher. They choreographed this whole show and have put in many hours of their

own time doing so. If it wasn’t for all Conservatories their generosity this show would never have happened.

Overall, this show as a massive success Porches and a great experience foretc. every single

student taking part in this show. There are so many mixed abilities and so much talent. Without all our different skills the show wouldn’t have been so good. Well done to everyone - backstage, actors, dancers, lighting, choreography and scripts. Article by Tara Reynolds (8R)

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Martyn Kemp feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double

glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up

when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Coalville and the surrounding area and Martyn is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction

that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION WHY NOT HELP TO CARE FOR A YOUNG CARER? Did you know that there are estimated to be 700,000 carers under the age of 18 in the UK? Some of these young people live in your area and the Barnardo’s CareFree Young Carers’ Services is asking if you can help support these young people to have some time away from their care roles. In partnership with Leicestershire County Council and Health commissioners, Barnardo’s provides a range of support services for children and young people in Leicestershire who provide care for a family member at home. The family member is often a parent but can also be a sibling or grandparent. They need care due to having a disability, a chronic health condition or a mental health problem. Young carers often feel they miss out on their childhood because of their very adult responsibilities.

for young carers. The groups help young carers have regular time out from their care responsibilities and give them the opportunity to socialise with other children who understand their situation. In order to get to these groups, most young carers need help with transport which is why Barnardo’s is asking if you would be willing and able to offer your time to help. To become a Barnardo’s volunteer you will need to be able to offer about 3 to 4 hours of your time on a weekday evening either once a week or once a fortnight during term time. You will also need to be able to transport children or young people in your own vehicle as well as support young carers once they get to their group activities. In return you will be offered full training and reimbursement for your expenses.

The next volunteer training session runs in Enderby on Saturday 31 Jan and 7 Feb. Process Of Lamination! Let us create a unique blind for your home with a fabric of your choice. Using a unique lamination process we can turn your choice of fabric into a roller, vertical, or panel blind, without changing the appearance or feel of the fabric.

For more details please call Caroline Thompson Acacia Curtains and Blinds 0795 1619046

For verticals this works particularly well as a working blind behind a dress curtain, offering privacy and light control and as a stylish alternative to a roman blind. For rollers you can add a shaped edge, braiding, or even beading and crystals as a finishing touch. For panel blinds your fabric could change the appearance of a patio door and can also be matched to wallpaper. The possibilities are endless! All styles are available with a blackout option making them perfect for bedrooms. For a designer look why not consider a matching pelmet or valance? We will be happy to discuss all the above options with you and can offer a wide range of beautiful fabrics suitable for this window treatment.

GARDENING

T

CREATING YOUR DREAM GARDEN

he New Year is a great time to reflect on the year past & dream of the long sunny days in the garden to come. If your garden looked tired in 2014, lacked colour and drama then now is the time to make plans for a great garden in 2015.

CREATING THE GARDEN OF YOUR DREAMS

Creating a planting plan

Developing a design

Gardens can quickly become untidy and unmanageable with shrubs which have outgrown their space, flowers which flop & a hotch-potch of impulse purchase plants. Most family gardens have an existing lawn and patio with need a little regular maintenance but like the flooring in our homes although they serve a purpose, they rarely offer much in the way of decorative excitement! Like our interior soft furnishings, wall coverings & ornaments, It’s the planting in a garden which adds the colour and drama. With a planting revamp your garden can be a bright, colourful and fun place to spend time. Planting design is my speciality, as an experienced plantswoman I love to create plant rich spaces to excite, inspire or soothe. Whether you desire a garden to enjoy with your friends & family in the summer or a relaxing hideaway to destress after a long day, plants are perfect for setting the right mood and injecting some colour and drama.

DESIGNING WITH PLANTS Establishing how you want the garden to look, how it will be used, when and by whom, is the first step in the design process. Following a consultation and

Selecting the plants

a survey of the garden, a planting scheme can be developed to transform the space whether it’s to become a contemporary outdoor room, an entertaining space, calming courtyard or a wildlife friendly haven. With such a huge range of plants to choose from it can be tempting to cram all sorts in! By selecting groups of plants which will provide the structure, the bright flowering colour and the softening foliage, a patchwork of random plants can be avoided. So before I choose the individual plants I decide which groups will be need for the overall scheme. For example: The BBQ & party friendly garden – Would comprise of background of low maintenance shrubs for the structure, grasses for the softening foliage and bright, long lasting perennials for colour during the summer party season. Pots of colourful perennials & herbs could also be used to jazz up the patio. The secluded chill out zone – Tall bamboos and grasses could be used to give height and seclusion. Flowering shrubs & perennials in cool shades of blue, ivory and lilac would give a calming colour palette to help purify the soul after a long stressful day. The Country cottage garden - Romantic swathes of ‘chocolate box’ pretty perennials in pastel shades would provide the colour whilst traditional flowering shrubs would give structure.

alongside it’s neighbours to create a cohesive scheme. I feel that every garden should offer colour or interest throughout the whole year whether from flowers, berries, seed heads, stems or plant form so I ensure I include plants to fulfil this in each scheme. I find the creation of concept boards useful at this stage to show how colours and forms work together in the developing scheme. With the palette of plants selected I move on to the hand drawn planting plan – a scale drawing to show planting density and position amongst the existing garden features with accompanying plant collages and a maintenance scheme where required. With this complete it’s time to present to the client, source the plants and get to work on the garden. Whether you long for a secluded hideaway or an entertaining space, a consultation and planting revamp can help you achieve the garden of your dreams. Give me a call to discuss your requirements or check out my website for more details. Tel. 07506 750250 www.belgrierson.co.uk At this time of year the shiny seed catalogues start to drop through the letterbox to my delight. Next month I’ll be looking at which packets of seeds to buy if you’d like to start your own cut flower garden in the spring. Wishing you all a happy New Year!

Once I’ve chosen which groups of plants I’ll be using, I go on to consider the individual plants themselves looking at the size, shape and form of each plant and how it will work

SNIBSTON CLOSURE DECISION CONDEMNED The decision of the County Council to proceed to close Snibston Discovery Museum has been met with much condemnation locally. However, a long running campaign by the Friends of Snibston and local politicians to save the site won’t stop following the decision of the County Council Cabinet to proceed to closure. Despite not yet having full plans in place for the site the Cabinet report asks officers to go ahead and plan for closure. The Cabinet are rejecting proposals to take over the site by the Friends of Snibston, claiming they are not ready. The report by the Tory Cabinet represents a disappointing decision for those who have been campaigning to save Snibston. However the campaign will continue. The Conservative plan to plough on with the closure of Snibston at the detriment of our local area is terrible news. However my resolve in fighting to save Snibston won’t weaken. The campaign to save Snibston has been loud and clear - people right across Leicestershire want Snibston saved. Saving Snibston is not only what people want but it’s also vital for the local economy. Snibston brings over £4m into the Coalville economy every year. Yet the County Council claim closing Snibston Discovery Museum will have no significant impact on the social, economic or environmental well-being of the County area. I do not think there is anyone living in Coalville believes that to be true.

In North West Leicestershire 584 people have been hit by the Bedroom Tax. That’s why I was disappointment in December when MPs failed to back Labour’s attempt to scrap the Bedroom Tax by Christmas. Labour forced a debate and vote in parliament on the Bedroom Tax. Sadly Tory and Lib Dem MPs voted together to ensure the unfair Bedroom Tax remains. The motion was lost 298 to 266.

The importance of Snibston to the local area and the fantastic array of collections on display were clear to Labour’s Shadow Museum Minister when I brought her to see Snibston in November. Sadly the County Council are determined to put Snibston to the sword before Labour can implement plans to redistribute heritage spend out of London if we win Government in May. Labour County Councillor for Coalville Terri Eynon also said “County Hall has been consistent in their determination to continue with plans to close Snibston Discovery Museum. It is shocking that the closure plan is to be implemented before the Council have undertaken an audit and condition assessment of the collections currently stored or displayed at Snibston.

I’m increasingly worried about the growing crisis in our Accident and Emergency departments. That’s why I have called for action following the worst figures for Accident and Emergency since records began.

Residents in North West Leicestershire will be particularly worried with all local A&E Departments missing the target. Leicester, Derby, Burton and Nottingham A&E Departments all missed the 95%, with Leicester Royal only seeing 69.4% of patents in December. This latest call follows a similar call for action from me last winter. The increase in A&E waiting times has been caused by cuts to social care budgets, meaning more older people are ending up in

• The government’s own independent evaluation of the policy recently reported that • Just 4.5 per cent of affected tenants were able to move to smaller accommodation within the social sector • 60 per cent of affected tenants were in arrears after just 6 months • There was “widespread concern that those who were paying were making cuts to other household essentials or incurring other debts in order to pay the rent” I’ll be honoured to be your MP after May’s election. If I am I’ll proudly walk through the lobbies of the House of Commons as part of a Labour Government that is committed to abolishing the Bedroom Tax.

The Council have turned down the option of a Trust, claiming the Friends of Snibston have not demonstrated that the savings requirement of the County Council would be met. That is rich, when the Council itself has provided no clear business case to support the reduced museum offer. It is going to cost the tax-payer £2.5M to turn a popular tourist attraction into a collection of mothballed mining buildings that will struggle to attract parents and children to the site.

A&E EXPERIENCES WORST WEEKS

Data showed fewer than 90% of patients were seen within four hours in the seven days up to December 2014. Major units particularly struggled, with just six out of 140 meeting the target to see 95% within four hours. Over the October to December 2014 period 92.6% were seen, also the worst figures since records began.

Since the Bedroom Tax was introduced around half a million low-income

households have been forced to find, on average an extra £700 a year. Two thirds of the households affected include a person with a disability and the tax also hits 60,000 carers.

hospital because there is no one else to take care of them. In addition lack of access to GP appointments means more people are forced to attend A&E. Last year over 43,575 patients locally waited seven days or longer to see a GP the last time they tried. This growing crisis compares badly to A&E under the previous Labour Government, A&E was performing well with 98% of patients seen within 4 hours. All of the A&E departments local people rely on are missing the target. We need action to reverse this slide. The staff in our NHS work incredibly hard but resources are being stretched to breaking point.

A

s we look back on the year, the residents of North West Leicestershire can be rightly proud of the contribution we are making towards the economic growth in the UK which is recognised as being the fastest growing economy in the G20. As I have said before, this district is delivering one of the fastest growth rates outside London and the South East. Unemployment has tumbled over the past year with over 400 more people now in work and paying taxes compared to this time last year and now stands at 1.6%. I believe now is the time for North West Leicestershire to get more reward for the contribution it makes towards our Country. I have long argued that our District and County have historically been left behind when it comes to funding our Council’s and our public services. Take Education for instance: I appeared very recently on the ITV Lobby programme debating with Birmingham MP Jack Dromey talking about Government funding for local Councils. During my research I discovered that not only is Central Government funding for Birmingham three times per head what it is in Leicestershire but every pupil in Birmingham has £1,600 more spent on their Education than those in Leicestershire. The reason for this has been historic as more funds under the previous Government went to cities than to counties. However to me it is completely wrong how the gap has been allowed to escalate in this way. My long argument against this did meet with some success earlier this when the County won an extra £242 per pupil in funding to narrow the gap and against Labour MP’s in cities arguing that they should have had the money. I have been heartened by the success Leicestershire has had in obtaining extra funding and I am determined that this should be extended into our other public services and our Council’s. I will be leading a delegation of

ANDREW BRIDGEN MP BRINGS YOU THE COALVILLE JOBS FAIR 10am – 3pm on Friday 6th March 2015 Although both youth unemployment and general unemployment in the Coalville area is falling and is lower than when I was elected to Parliament in May 2010, that’s no consolation to those who are seeking work. I recognise that it can be difficult to find a job if you don’t know what opportunities are out there, or if you haven’t been in work for some time. That’s why I am organising a 2nd Jobs Fair in Coalville on Friday 6th March 2015 to offer people looking for work an opportunity to meet and speak to local employers. The purpose of this Fair is to put these

Leicestershire MP’s in January to argue for fairer funding for our Fire Services, another case of our county receiving a poor settlement over many years and has left us bumping along the bottom national league table. The same goes for the Police and the County Council and I will be making arguments on their behalf that we should not be punished for good management and efficiency. Our increase in Education funding has shown what can be achieved and I am determined that we shall get our share of resources. As I look back on the Parliamentary year I am pleased that two of the issues I have led campaigns on have resulted in action by the Government. Firstly there was the amendment to the deregulation bill that will see the decriminalisation of non-payment of the TV Licence. It is a scandal that people, a disproportionate number of whom are mother’s to young children are being sent to prison for this. Secondly is the scrapping of Air Passenger Duty for Children, a measure which will help families who wish to go abroad for their holiday, indeed for 1st May next year 3 million children will fly tax free and from 2016, 4.5 million under 16 will benefit. Going forward I will be stepping up efforts to reopen the National Forest Railway line early next year and will try to call a debate in parliament asking for this to be look at. Again with the contribution this District makes to the economy, it is unacceptable that we do not have a single railway station in the District. If the Country has the money to pay for HS2, then we should have the money to fund this project. I will also be meeting with the Health Secretary where amongst other things, I will be asking that Ashby Hospital is not disposed of until residents are satisfied that the change in the ways services are delivered are working effectively. MICHAEL WYATT

LONDON ROAD POST OFFICE RE-LOCATING TO THE SPAR ON BROOM LEYS ROAD The post office on London Road in Coalville is to be re-locate into the Spar off Broom Leys Road after a consultation exercise by Post office Ltd. The Post office on London Road will close on Wednesday 21st January at 5pm and re-open in the Spar on Thursday 22nd January with an increased opening hour service. The new opening hours will be from 07.00 hrs to 23.00 hrs seven days a weeks. Liberal Democrat Cllr Michael Wyatt who has been concerned about the potential re-location said, “I have spoken to many local people who were concerned that the Post Office would

be closed and not re-located. I must say I am delighted that the Post Office will be re-opening at the Spar, which is probably a much better place due to the additional of parking spaces, and much needed extra potential customers from people using the Spar. Another bonus from the move is that the opening hours have increased so the service provided by the Post Office will allow customers to utilise this valuable service even out of the working day.”

WYATT WANTS TO KNOW YOUR VIEWS ON LIGHT SWITCH ON IN COALVILLE Liberal Democrat Councillor Michael Wyatt is currently trying to push the Council to move the light switch on back to the Clock Tower, which is the centre of the Town. Cllr Wyatt said, "many local residents and businesses have asked me to try and convince the council to move the light switch on back to the clock tower where it belongs. I really do think whatever problems there are they can be overcome. It's a matter of having the will instead of coming up every year with excuses to why it cannot be done." So far over 200 local residents have joined Michael's campaign to have the festivities moved back into the heart of the Town. If you would like to see the light switch on moved back to the Clock Tower, with stalls in the high street and the

car park used as a car park instead of being taken up by a stage and stalls, then why not visit the an open market for coalville Facebook site and have your say. Alternatively you can send your comments direct Cllr Wyatt on mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk

WYATT IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT NEW DOCTORS SURGERY FOR COCKED HAT SITE IN GREENHILL Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt is currently in discussions with a number of agencies, and the NHS to see if the Cocked Hat site on the Greenhill Estate could be used for providing an additional doctors surgery for the local area. Cllr Wyatt said, “it’s early days yet but all the statistics show there is a clear need for an additional doctors surgery, and other related health facilities for

the Greenhill area. Utilising the Cocked Hat site would be a great opportunity to get rid of this brownfield site, which as been a blot on the local area for nearly a decade. Another idea we have been looking at for the site is more localised rented housing. Personally I would like to see both on the site, but whatever happens this site must be utilised so it can provide additional services for the local residents and improve the local area.”

KIDS ZONE

Christie Cats Winter Party It was a cold and wintery day and the ground was sparkling with fresh frost and ice. Christie Cat was very busy preparing for a party she was having that very night. “I can’t believe I’ve still got so much to do, I need to whizz to the butchers to pick up the meat for our meal, then run to the grocers for the vegetables and I still need to tidy the living room and set the table, I’ll never get it all done before everyone arrives later.’ Said Christie to herself, very worried that she wouldn’t get everything done in time. Christie decided that she would tidy the house later and better run out to get the food. Just then someone knocked at the door. “Hello Christie” Said Daniel who had just nipped round to check what time the party was going to start. “Oh Daniel, I’m in such a rush, I’ve so much to do before tonight.” “Is there anything I can do to help Christie?” offered Daniel. “No thank you Daniel, just come over at 6pm tonight and enjoy yourself. I’m just off out to collect the meat from the butchers and the vegetables from the grocers.” Said Christie sounding very flustered. “Ok said Daniel, but be careful going to the shops, don’t take the shortcut through the lane as it’s very, very, icy.” Warned Daniel. So Daniel left and Christie got ready to go out. Time was ticking on and she was so worried she wouldn’t be ready in time. So very foolishly she ignored what Daniel had said and decided to take the shortcut through the lane so she could save a bit of time. Christie, rushed off and soon started slipping and sliding all over the place.

The Midas Touch

The dawn of day comes very calm and still, While autumn mist joins battle with the sun. A blackbird’s song gives way to pinking shrill, Sword shafts of sunlight flash and day’s begun. The traffic sounds so clear yet far away, And swallows twitter queuing on the wire. A black cat stalks her hidden silent prey, Red robin sings audition to the choir. The dew has dropped her diamonds on the grass, The cobwebs wear a mantle of fine lace Which fairies scoop to make a looking glass, And nodding seedpods smile to see their face. The brooklet chatters idly on its way, A song-thrush makes key changes to its sonnet. The squirrel redesigns her treetop drey, Dame Poppy dons her Phrygian bonnet. And then it comes – a shiver or a sigh, The whisper of a winter’s tale foretold. The birch lifts silver purse strings to the sky, And down cascades a harbinger of gold. By Elaine Stevenson

Bake With Fee BOOST BARS

“Oh this is very slippery and icy, maybe I should have listened to Daniel” Just then BUMP Christie’s paws slipped from under her and she fell backwards bumping her head on the ground very hard. A little while later Christie opened her eyes and saw all her friends stood around her. She was lying in a hospital bed with a big bandage round her head. “What happened” Said Christie sounding confused. “You fell over and bumped your head” Said Bethany. “Because you took the shortcut even though I’d told you not to” Said Daniel crossly. “Oh no” said Christie, “What about the party?” “You’re staying right where you are for a few days” Said Doctor Brown who had been listening to the whole conversation. “If you hadn’t been in such a rush, this wouldn’t have happened and you could have had your party. You should listen to your friends next time!” So Christie stayed in the hospital for a few days to recover and then Daniel and Bethany took her home and helped her tidy and cook so they could have a quiet party after all. Christie promised she’d listen to her friends next time.
