WELCOME

WELCOME TO YOUR JUNE COMMUNITY EYE MAGAZINE With a few days of sunshine under our belts the BBQs have been going and the summer dresses are out! Now it’s better weather to get out in the garden Bel has some tips on making your hanging baskets and pots look stunning. Sally is back with some advice on getting your feet ready for summer and Bonita gives us advice on keeping our eyes healthy in the sun. Our focus this month is on charity and we feature lots of local, national and even an overseas charity and give you details of how you can help and get involved. We are also proud to announce the total raised by you during our Air Ambulance appeal. A huge thank you to all who sponsored Andy, or who sent in donations or took part in our ‘Wear it Yellow’ day! We also look at how much Stephen Sutton has inspired people after raising over £4 million pounds for The Teenage Cancer Trust before sadly losing his battle against cancer on the 15th May. I’ve had a look at how the Trust helps local teenagers through their unit at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and again details are there if you’d like to find out more. As usual we have our competitions, recipe and some craft and baking articles to keep you going until we return next month with your July issue, which will be all about getting out and about in Leicestershire. CHARITY FEATURE

“I don’t see the point in measuring life in time any more. I’d rather measure life in terms of making a difference” - Stephen Sutton

WILL YOU BE ‘A BIT MORE STEPHEN’?

M

any of us have heard of Stephen Sutton, the teenager with terminal cancer who shot to fame with his bucket list. The country seemed to pull together to help him achieve his dreams; from breaking a world record, to hugging an elephant and having a tattoo! But his most famous item on the list was to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust, he has now raised over £4 million pounds, the largest single amount raised on any Just Giving Page! He managed this by having fun, organising events for others to enjoy and not giving up or withdrawing from society. I’ve decided to take a closer look at the Teenage Cancer Trust in Leicestershire and wonder if we could each be ‘a bit more Stephen’ and push ourselves to raise funds for charity? • Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. • They build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. They want every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live. • Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, young people can feel extremely isolated during treatment, some never meeting another young person with cancer.

Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference. • Teenage Cancer Trust empowers young people to take control of their health and speak up when something changes. Their pioneering Education team deliver positive and interactive free cancer awareness sessions in schools, colleges and universities on the signs of cancer, cancer treatments and prevention as well as healthy living. • Our Teenage Cancer Trust unit is at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, with the next nearest being Nottingham City Hospital. • Between them these units support 125 young adults with cancer. The running cost of the Leicester unit alone is over £120,000 per year. • They rely on donations to do their vital work and are always looking for support from the local community to organise fundraising events. Stephen sadly passed away on the 14th May but was fundraising up to the week of his death. I hope he has inspired many people to think about what they could achieve for the many charities that need our support. If The Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that you would like to support please contact heather. bowen@teenagecancertrust.org alternatively there are many other charities featured in this month’s magazine so please see if you can find time to get involved and help. I know I’m going to try and be ‘a bit more Stephen’ are you?

LOROS LADIES LUNCH

Photograph by: The Lens Butterfly. Left - Right: Toastmaster Mike Jacobs, LOROS President Jennifer, Lady Gretton, Julia Bradbury, Event Organiser Laura Betts and Fundraising Manager, Diane Morris On Wednesday 14th May a sellout crowd flocked to King Power Stadium to dine in the company of LOROS Patron and small screen presenter Julia Bradbury all in aid of our local Hospice. The LOROS Ladies Lunch is one of the charity’s longest running, much loved events with women from all over the County and beyond turning out to support LOROS. This year’s event raised almost £10,000 in just five hours! The ladies played stand-up bingo, purchased tickets for a raffle and stood in line to have their books signed by Julia Bradbury all to raise this incredible sum which will go directly towards patient care at the Hospice. Laura Betts, Fundraiser and Event Organiser said “It is such a privilege to be involved in this event. We receive incredible support year after year and we are already taking bookings for next year’s luncheon without having confirmed our Guest Speaker!

We are so lucky to have such dedicated supporters.” Not only did Julia entertain 600 ladies with her fabulous after dinner talk focussed around her career, passions and close-knit family but she also helped to put smiles on the faces of patients, staff and volunteers when she visited the Hospice on Wednesday morning prior to the luncheon. Diane Morris Fundraising Manager said “Julia became a Patron for LOROS back in September 2012 and there had been a great deal of excitement anticipating her visit. The whole day was a resounding success, her visit to the Hospice really helped to boost morale and with Julia’s help we then went on to raise almost £10,000 at the luncheon, we feel extremely privileged to have Julia as our Patron.” You can book now for the 2015 LOROS Ladies Luncheon now by calling the LOROS Fundraising Department on 0116 231 8431.

RUGBY CLUB’S YOUNG LEADERS RECOGNISED

Young Leaders from Coalville Rugby Club were recently honoured at the club’s annual Junior Awards night. Part of the RFU’s Young Leaders Programme, the team of volunteers has been helping out at various levels over the past two years. In particular they have been part of the coaching team that has worked with Castle Rock High School in its satellite rugby link. Present at the awards night was Russell Webster, PE teacher from Castle Rock, ‘The link with our local rugby club has been going on for three years now and continues to grow. It’s always good to see young leaders getting involved in the coaching sessions too which not only helps us but also allows them to develop.’

‘Everyone at the club is proud of the work that they have done. They have volunteered for a wide range of activities from refereeing children’s tournaments to helping out at a charity music festival. It’s great to see a tradition of community volunteering being put down that will hopefully carry on into the future,’ commented Coalville RFC’s Mini/Junior Chair Paul Macmillan. Coalville RFC has a programme of volunteering built into its youth development strategy and the next generation of young volunteers are already being mentored so that they can carry on the good work.

LITTLE HATS GIVE BIG HELP ARE YOU A KNITTER OR DO YOU KNOW ONE? Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling for all knitters to join in The Big Knit this year to raise much-needed funds to help keep local older people warm and healthy this coming winter. Peter Ralphs, on behalf of this well-known local charity, said “We are so grateful to those who are already clicking away, though our 2014 drive has started rather slowly. Last year we received an incredible 42,000 little hats by September. Obviously we need lots of help to match this challenging total which will assist our Winter Warmth Campaign 2014. Innocent drinks will donate 25p for each little hat which will adorn the smoothie bottles sold in Sainsbury stores in November. “ Knitters can get the simple knitting patterns online at www.ageuk.org.uk/leics or by calling the Business Development Manager on 0116 2237344. Please arrange for your knitted hats to be at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland (Ref: BDM), Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester, LE1 7LA by the end of September.

LOCAL NEWS

FISHY BUSINESS Let’s talk ponds today and how to keep them sparkling clean! Given the time of year and hopeful glimpses of sun appearing through the clouds I thought it will be a good topic to choose… So do you have one or are you thinking about adding this beautiful water feature to your back garden? If so, then please read through as I will try to give you some simple to follow tips to make it all worthwhile. Pond in essence is like a large aquarium and the only difference is that the temperature and the amount of light are not constant as in your home environment. If you take appropriate steps to accommodate these differences then you should be able to enjoy your pond as much as your indoor aquarium. I think I need to start somewhere and it all begins with this phone call: ‘My pond went green, can you please help?’ As I said before, you can not put sun on a timer and that’s why things change. Water quality, as the life on earth in the whole, is affected by the sun light. When the weather improves and your pond starts receiving more sun then the water ‘blooms’ = goes green. At this stage you need to take a step back and think what happened with your pool during the winter period. We do turn the pumps off for the winter so the water has a chance to settle. The top layer of the water surface might freeze but the bottom will always remain at 4OC (unless your pond is very shallow or we have a very cold winter). Fish stay at the bottom of the pond and slowly go dormant. They stop eating and slow down their metabolism to minimum utilising body fat as a source of energy. They do still produce a very small amount of waste though. If you add to that all the detritus, sludge, leaves and any other things that might have fallen into the water during the winter months then you can realise where all this green water is coming from. With the weather picking up all things at the bottom of the pond are starting to decompose and supply vital nutrients for algae to multiply. Yes, green water is very small (single-celled) algae that are suspended in water giving it a green colouration.

So how to keep on top of this problem and keep your water crystal clear? Nutrients You can deplete them by implementing the following: - water changes, - using pump/filter, - hovering the bottom of your pond - adding beneficial bacteria, - adding fast growing plants. Water changes are the simplest way of diluting the waste (and replenishing water with macro and microelements that fish and plants need). All you need to do is to remove some (let’s say 25%) of water from your pond and replace it with tap water. The only thing to remember is to use a ‘tap safe’ solution that will detoxify water from harmful chlorine and chloramines that are added to tap water to make it safe for us to drink. Fish don’t appreciate these additives (they are harmful to aquatic life) and chloramines can not be removed by means of water movement/ evaporation. (When doing a water change, remember to use the dirty water from your pond as lawn fertilizer!) If you have a pump and a filter then water changes are easier as all you need to do is to disconnect your pump from the filter and let the water run onto your lawn until you remove 25% of pond’s capacity. We do not recommend doing a total water change with scrubbing your pond clean. You do upset the balance in the pond too much and that itself might result in algae bloom. Your filter helps with trapping the waste as well so regular cleaning is the key. Remember that your pump needs maintenance as well. Its heart is a little thing called an impeller and this piece needs regular cleaning to sustain an appropriate water flow through your filter. The filter itself needs cleaning but remember to only use water from your pond for this purpose as the above-mentioned chlorine/chloramines will damage beneficial bacteria that live in filter media. Now comes the big gun – Pond Vac! Vacuuming the bottom of the pond is highly recommended. Doing it once a year, at the beginning of pond season, is a minimum but if you do it twice (at the end of pond season) then

you’re being a good pond keeper. Hovering is also a way of doing a water change but the main reason for this action is to remove all the sludge from the bottom of your pool that will be a source of your problems. It’s not as big of a chore as you think and on a sunny day it might actually be a nice way of exercising… If you don’t have or don’t want to have a bulky piece of equipment you can hire one for a day from us or buy a much more compact version of this ‘pond appliance’. Beneficial bacteria can be used on regular basis throughout the pond season to help to ‘digest’ all the dirt that can settle in your pond. ‘Sludge Busters’

are a group of products that contain good bacteria in a form of powder, liquid or gel. These bacteria are your friends and they literally eat the dirt! Lastly, oxygenating plants can take a lot of nutrients out of the water and out-compete algae in this way. The easiest and most effective way of introduction is to get weighted bunches of these plants and to drop them straight into the pond. Species of oxygenators to be considred include: Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), Willow Moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) and Curly Water Thyme (Lagarosiphon major).

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Martyn Kemp feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double

glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up

when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Coalville and the surrounding area and Martyn is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction

that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LOCAL NEWS

EFFIE - FIGHTING FOR BATTERNS Effie was born in June 2010 and seemed a perfectly healthy child. She met all of her milestones, even exceeded some of them. She loved to go to the local farm, run around at the park and play with her friends. When Effie was 2½, in December 2012, she seemed run down and anxious. We thought she may be coming down with a cold, but in reality it was much worse. In Jan 2013, Effie had her first seizure, a drop attack in the bath. The following day saw 3 seizures, by the end of the week she was having 10 a day and was admitted to hospital. Effie was diagnosed with epilepsy and started on anticonvulsant medication. Over the next 6 months, the seizures become increasingly difficult to control and her medication was regularly increased. Effie's development slowed considerably over the following months. Effie was admitted to hospital again in June 2013, the day before her 3rd birthday, unable to walk, her speech was slurred and she was hallucinating. Another medication was added which seemed to help and she was able to walk again, albeit very wobbly with lots of falls. As the year progressed, Effie's ability to walk and talk continued to decline and she started to have problems with her sight. In January 2014, we were given the devastating news that Effie has Late

Infantile Batten Disease. Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system, in which previously normal children develop vision problems or seizures. Over time, the children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. They may have difficulties sleeping and become distressed for no apparent reason. They lose their ability to sit and hold their head up, and will eventually need to be tube fed. Chest infections become frequent and suctioning will be required to maintain airways. Eventually, the children become blind, bedridden and demented. Batten disease is always fatal, with death usually occurring between the ages of 5-12. Despite her worsening symptoms, Effie is still a very happy, brave and inspirational little girl who loves music, stories and watching Peppa Pig! At the moment, there is no treatment and no cure for Batten disease. Our fundraising will pay for special needs/sensory toys to try to help Effie develop new skills, physiotherapy to help keep her mobile for as long as possible, and any medical equipment she needs on her Batten's journey. We are also supporting the BDFA, who fund research into Batten disease and help other families affected this terrible disease.

JHON’S WEIGHT LOSS HAS GONE SWIMMINGLY! A 17-year-old from Coalville has lots to celebrate after losing 3st 7lb to reach the finals of a national slimming competition where he met Olympic swimming sensation Rebecca Adlington. Jhon Bateman was delighted to make the final 44 in Slimming World’s Young Slimmer of the Year 2014 competition out of all 11,000 Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland. The competition recognises the enormous achievements of young people aged 16 to 21 in making long-term lifestyle changes to become fitter, healthier and happier. Obesity is not just a problem for adults in the UK and Ireland. Many young people are so severely overweight that they’re beginning to suffer serious health conditions like Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure – conditions which would normally be associated with people of their parents’ or grandparents’ generation, so there is a huge need for healthy lifestyle support for young people and their families. Slimming World’s programme for young people aged 11 to 15 allows them to attend a group for free when they join with a parent or guardian,* and the club has a reduced weekly fee of £3.95 (€7.50 in RoI) for 16 and 17 year olds.

Jhon, who was an Olympic torch bearer last year, joined the Whitwick Slimming World group in September 2013. He says “I used to feel like I was different from all my friends, I felt like I stood out because I was bigger and I couldn’t always do the same things, shop at the same high street stores or wear the same clothes as them. It affected my confidence and I didn’t want to be like that for the rest of my life. I wanted to make changes and I knew I needed help to do that.”

His fellow members in the Whitwick group voted for him to represent them in the Young Slimmer of the Year competition and he was invited to the semi-finals, which were held at Slimming World’s head office in Alfreton. It was there he met Rebecca Adlington who swapped swimming for slimming to come along to Slimming World, which is close to her hometown of Mansfield, and make the day extra special for the youngsters taking part.

“I heard about Slimming World from my occupational therapist. When I decided to join the Whitwick group, I was really nervous but everyone was friendly and helpful. It was much easier than I expected to start making healthy choices and I soon realised that I didn’t need to make drastic changes, just small things like swapping white bread for wholemeal and starting to cook healthy meals instead of buying junk food or just putting convenience foods in the microwave made a big difference. I picked up lots of recipes and tips in the group – I’m actually not a bad cook now – and the encouragement I got from the other members and my Consultant Sharon really kept me going, even if I had a difficult week.”

Rebecca won two gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and two bronze medals at London 2012 and is the current world record holder in the 800m Freestyle. She says “I loved meeting all of the young people at the competition, including Jhon. I’m so proud of all that I’ve achieved in my swimming career, but now my passion is to help more young people learn to swim. Being active is so important for your health. Teenagers and young people get a bad reputation because we think of them all sitting in front of the TV or a computer but the young slimmers I met, like Jhon, have shown that their health is important to them and that given the right tools it is possible to make positive changes whatever your age.”

Since that first visit Jhon has lost 3st 7lb, going from 15st 12lbs to 12st 5lbs, and feels great.

Sharon Dawson, who runs the Whitwick Slimming World group which Jhon attends, agrees

LOCAL COMPANY SUPPORTS JACKSONVILLE MIRACLE LEAGUE USA Local company County Contractors have made strong links with an American charity and have set up a scholarship for disabled children. Jacksonville Miracle League provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to play baseball, regardless of their abilities. ‘We cannot change or cure the medical issues life has dealt them. What we can do is provide them with an opportunity to experience the joy and benefits that come from playing baseball. We believe every child deserves a chance to play baseball.’

“Everyone is so proud of Jhon. What he’s achieved is so much more than just losing weight. The changes Jhon has made now have given him the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices and new active habits that will stand him in good stead for the rest of his life. Most of all it’s given him the self-belief and confidence to achieve his dreams, and hopefully meeting Rebecca has inspired him even more.” Unfortunately Jhon wasn’t the overall winner of the competition but anyone who’s been inspired about his story is welcome at the Whitwick Slimming World group at Hall Lane Methodist Church every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm or for more information they can call Sharon on 07855 250017

IT'S MORE THAN JUST A GAME There's something about the game that lights up a child's eyes. It's an experience that every child deserves. And through the Miracle League, it's an experience that every child can enjoy. Designed exclusively for children with special needs, The Miracle League is the first of its kind. The rules are simple. - Every player bats once each inning - All base runners are safe - Every player scores a run before the inning is over - Last batter up hits a home run each inning - Community volunteers serve as "buddies" to assist the players - Each team and each player wins every game Paul Lovell from County Contractors regularly donates to the charity, recently providing them with funding for kit, and paying for families who can’t afford the joining fee. The 18th May saw the local business raise £271 at a car boot sale for the Miracle League with the help of donations from ECA Toolfast, EH Smiths, Leics Plastics and Harlow Timber. WYATT ATTACKS COUNCIL FOR WASTING OVER £160,000 OF TAXPAYERS MONEY

BROOM LEYS ALLOTMENT PLOTS AVAILABLE WANT TO GROW YOUR OWN? Several new plots have now been made available at the Broom Leys Community allotment site off Bradgate Drive in Greenhill. Chairman of the allotment society Michael Wyatt said, "Since opening we have grown from strength to strength. If anyone would like to join this successful site then please just drop us a line on 07773341531 or you can email me direct on mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk". The allotment site is open to local residents who live within the Greenhill and Bardon area.

Local Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt, has attacked the District Council for spending over £160,000 of taxpayers money on the current indoor Market. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “It’s absolutely crazy spending this amount of taxpayers money on the indoor Market when clearly the overwhelming majority of shoppers and local residents support an outdoor Market. The current Market has failed for a number of years to break even. If anything its made a substantial loss. It’s time both the Tories and Labour Councillors pulled their heads out of the sand, and listened to what the local people and local businesses in the local area want. In my opinion the current indoor Market should be made into a train station, which would be a massive boost to our Town. Also the Council need to give the local people an outdoor market which the majority who I to speak fully support.”

Chera Voce, the vocal harmony singers in Shepshed have in the past month moved to a new rehearsal venue. The singers are rehearsing at Shepshed High School fortnightly on Saturday mornings 10.30 till 12.30. A spokesperson for the group said that the year has already been busy with charity performances and this is set to continue with additional bookings for the rest of this year and into 2014. Chera Voce’s repertoire covers a wide variety of vocal harmony from classical music to modern day musicals. Their membership is growing and new members are always welcome. No previous singing experience is necessary just come along. There are vacancies in the tenors and altos sections though all voices are welcome. Contact details for further information are: 01509 505648 or 01509 561458.

SHOW HOME NEEDS TO BE THE NORM NOT JUST AN ASPIRATION Liberal Democrat Councillor Michael Wyatt who represents one of biggest Council Estate in Coalville has attacked the Council for allowing double standards in their bid to improve the Council housing stock. Currently many council houses are being given a major overall due to years of neglect by the previous Labour Government. New kitchens, roofs, re-wiring, doors and windows are being installed to bring our council housing stock to a decent standard. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "I really do think the Council housing bosses have a cheek to open up a show home on the estate when many tenants are contacting me, and the Council due to poor workmanship, and contractors failing to address tenants needs.

The Council clearly have double standards. The show home is what every home should be like but in reality many have experienced corners being cut, and shoddy workmanship, which is having to be put right at a later date." If any tenant would like to contact Cllr Michael Wyatt about any housing issues then ring Michael on 07773341531 or email Mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk

COUNCIL PAYS BACK THOUSANDS IN BEDROOM TAX PAYMENTS TO RESIDENTS North West Leics District Council have paid back around £25,000 to 29 families across the District who had wrongly been deducted housing benefit as a result of the bedroom tax. The average payment to each family is over £800. Councillor Dave De Lacy, who had raised the matter at a recent Council meeting and asked the Council to take immediate action, welcomed the repayments. Councillor De Lacy said “The Coalition Government messed up the original legislation on the bedroom tax which meant that these families should not have had this money deducted for about a year since April 2013. All over the country Councils are having to return money to residents as a result of this mistake. Thousands of people are affected.” Councillor De Lacy added “The Government have now closed what they have called this “loophole” so after refunding these payments from April 2013

these residents will again start to have this money deducted from March 2014. It’s an absolute disgrace that some of the most vulnerable families in the District have been treated in this cavalier fashion. Nearly two thirds of those families affected by the bedroom tax have someone who is disabled in the family. The government should get rid of the bedroom tax which is causing so much hardship to vulnerable families.” Councillor De Lacy also expressed his concern that although nearly 300 letters were sent out to residents by the Council only about 20% of residents had responded. Councillor De Lacy said “This could be because 80% of the residents did not satisfy the criteria for the repayment or it may just be possible that residents did not fully understand the Council`s letter and the need to claim the refund. I have asked the Council to survey a sample of those residents who have not responded to establish the reason why there was such a low response rate. We need to be confident that all residents who have been subject to these illegal deductions have received their money back.”

Greenhill Ward has been allocated £16,955 over four years from 2011–2015 by the Community Development Foundation.

Greenhill Ward Councillor Nick Clarke, who was involved in setting up the original public meeting and is a member of the Community First Panel said “I encourage any Community Group in the Greenhill area to apply for a grant. WINDOW DRESSING

Make The Most Of Your Conservatory More of us are adding a conservatory as a clever way of creating more living space. But with so many windows you can feel exposed and it can seem daunting to know where to begin to choose the right type of blind to reduce the suns glare and add protection for your furniture, while still giving you that wow factor... Before making a decision here are a few things to consider: What the room is being used for? Think about using a darker colour and/or a more opaque fabric to reduce glare in a TV room, lounge or home office. Go for one blind per glass panel if possible as smaller blinds are easier to operate; they may cost more initially but will last longer and be more reliable. Pleated roof blinds with a high performing reflective coating will give more protection to your furniture and be an investment in the longer term. It’s less critical to have reflective coated fabrics on the side windows, but pleated blinds are still a great choice as they fold away neatly. For a sleek and contemporary look opt for a pleated or Venetian blind in a Perfect Fit frame. This system requires no drilling or screws and gives enhanced privacy as the blinds ‘hug’ the window and cover any light gaps. Conservatory blinds, roof blinds and Perfect Fit blinds are available in many colours and fabrics from Acacia Curtains and Blinds. GARDENING

W

ith summer fast approaching it’s time to plant up hanging baskets and containers to give a cheery splash of colour around the house during the sunny months. I usually go for a couple of hanging baskets and a selection of large pots which are close to the garden hose to make watering easy. For those who don’t have the facilities to raise their own hanging basket and bedding plants themselves, late May & Early June is the best time to visit the local Nursery or Garden Centre to select ready grown plants. Basket and bedding plants don’t respond well to frost and cold winds so waiting until all risk of frost has past before planting out will save money and a return trip to buy replacements for those lost to the cold! I must have planted up tens of thousands of hanging baskets and planters over the years whilst working at plant nurseries. Whether it’s a traditional style or a contemporary colour theme that’s required there are plenty of suitable plants to choose from. See my favourites below.

PLANTING UP A BASKET OR POT Wire baskets allow you to plant through the sides for a spectacular display. To do this, use a pair of scissors to poke through the moss/fibre and then puncture through the plastic liner. Using about 6 small plants, gentle push the roots through the holes to the inside of the basket. To plant the top of the wire baskets and plant wicker baskets & pots, loosely fill with compost to just below the rim. Start with the larger plants first, gently firming the compost around the roots. Continue, making sure that the compost surface remains just below the edge of the basket/ pot, to help with watering. Water the basket/pot well and allow to settle for a few days in a sheltered spot. A little deadheading will be necessary and feeding with Tomato fertiliser throughout the summer will ensure a continuation of blooms. Watering everyday may be required during hot spells.

B lue & Pink Theme Basket

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BASKET OR CONTAINER From experience I recommend choosing hanging baskets & pots 14” or larger as anything smaller is difficult to look after and keep watered once the summer has arrived. Wire baskets need some sort of attractive liner. I use fresh moss layering 1” over the entire frame, but an alternative fibre liner is also suitable. Both wire and wicker baskets must then have a plastic liner, I simply use an old compost bag with the black side facing out & trimmed level with the rim. A few holes punctured in the base will aid drainage. A quality compost mix is vital if the basket or pot is going to look good all summer long. I use good multi-purpose compost and add water retaining granules and a slow release fertiliser- these are available from the nursery or garden centre.

MY RECIPE FOR 14” HANGING BASKET OR POT x1 Pelargonium (centre), x1 Trailing Fuchsia, x1 Trailing Petunia, x1 Ivy Leaf Geranium, x3 Nemesia/Diascia, x3 Verbena/Nepeta. For Wire baskets use the following additions for side planting:- x2 Nepeta, x2 Bacopa, x2 Verbena. MY FAVOURITE HANGING BASKET AND CONTAINER PLANTS Pelargonium – AKA Upright geraniums, these are great in pots or to add height to baskets. Good for sunny spots. Fuchsias – available as bush or trailing these will flower nonstop with a little deadheading. Available in a huge range of colour and flower shapes. These are particularly good in shady areas. Verbena – there are lots of colours available, some are true trailers whilst others will keep compact. Bacopa – lovely small white, blue or blooms on neat trailing plants. COLOUR COMBINATIONS Try selecting plants based on a colour theme for truly gorgeous baskets and containers. Some of the bespoke baskets I have created over the years include: Blue/ Lilac/Pink, Pure White, Blue/ Gold & Purple/Magenta, to name but a few. With a few baskets and pots planted you’re set for a colourful summer! Not all of us have time to care for these abundant beauties so next month I’ll be looking at which plants to choose if you need a low maintenance garden to suit a busy lifestyle.

LOCAL NEWS

THE BRIDGE EMMA'S STORY Emma arranged an appointment with a Housing Advisor. She had received a letter from her Housing Association stating that they were going to apply for a warrant from the Courts to evict her from her home. At the appointment, Emma was extremely emotional. She described to the Housing Advisor that she had lost her daughter 18 months ago. Since then she had suffered with severe depression and had at times felt suicidal. Emma told the Advisor that she was being assisted by a Psychiatrist and a Therapist. She felt incapable of managing her affairs due to her mental health problems, however, she was managing to continue to work part time which she said was the only reason that she got out of bed everyday. The Housing Advisor assessed Emma’s income and expenditure. It was clear that she could not afford the monthly rent in addition to the monthly rent arrears payments that had been set previously by the Court. The Advisor’s first priority was to prevent the eviction from happening. With Emma’s permission, the Housing Advisor contacted the Housing Association for copies of the Court Order and copies of recent rent statements. These documents along with the supporting information that the Advisor had gathered enabled the Advisor to put a case together to prevent Emma from becoming homeless. After discussions with the Housing Officer and Emma, it was agreed that the Housing Advisor would apply to the Courts to vary the current court order which compelled Emma to pay an unaffordable amount. The cost of putting in such a request to the court was £35 which Emma could not afford. The Housing Advisor contacted Charnwood Borough Council and requested a payment of £35 from their Homelessness Prevention Fund. The Council

GEMS Charity was founded in June 2012, by Andy and Sally Anderson of Kibworth to improve the experience of chemotherapy patients and their families at the Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Suite.

made us feel we wanted to give something back and although we couldn’t undo the experience they were going though, we could try to make the environment more comfortable for the patients now and in the future.”

‘GEMS’ is made up of the initials of four very special friends of theirs. Two have survived cancer but unfortunately the other two passed away. During that time they both supported their friends at weekly treatments at the Osbourne Suite it became apparent to them that the whole experience for patients could be made more comfortable. This inspired them to raise funds for non- medical equipment to make the patient's time at the suite more comfortable during what can be a very difficult time.

They raised £1,250.00 after four weeks and purchased window blinds which were donated to the chemotherapy suite on 20.7.12. Sufficient funds were raised after seven months to become a registered charity and in June 2013 GEMS presented the suite with £20,000. at the end of 2013 to purchase six specialist chairs (pictured below). The team at GEMS are currently raising funds for pumps for exclusive use on the suite, which will cut the waiting time for the patients to receive their treatment. They hope to achieve this target by the end of 2014.

Andy and Sally said, “We believe that more comfortable specialist chairs, curtains and other nonmedical equipment would greatly benefit those enduring long term cancer treatment. The courage of our friends and other patients

agreed and provided Emma with the money. The outcome of the Court application was successful as the Court agreed to lower the payments and the Housing Association agreed not to proceed with the eviction. The Housing Advisor now needed to ensure that Emma would not find herself in this situation again. With Emma’s permission, a referral was made to the Tenancy Support Service at The Bridge so that she could receive ongoing support. Emma was given assistance to claim Housing Benefit to contribute towards her rent costs and helped to make a claim of backdated housing benefit which would clear some of the rent arrears. Emma was really grateful for all of the help that The Bridge had given her and for enabling her to keep her

STEPS

CONDUCTIVE EDUCATION CENTRE

Steps Conductive Education Centre work hard every day to help the lives of young people who are affected with Motor Dysfunction or delay across the East Midlands. Situated in Shepshed they rely on donations and fundraising to carry out their important work. Conductive Education was pioneered in Hungary in the 1940’s by Dr Andras Peto. The method of teaching allows more children to be kept in mainstream schools. Conductive Education is a holistic approach centred on the child not the disability, the process - in which play is an integral element - stimulates continuous development in bodily control, mobility and communication, transforming the child’s confidence, motivation and well-being. Founded 18 years ago Steps only moved into to their purpose built home in 2007, prior to that they were renting rooms to carry out their vital work. Their luck changed when Patron Rosemary Conley funded a move which involved local tradesmen helping out and converting the old school building on Loughborough Road into the fantastic facility they have today, part of which is rented to Glebe House. 26 families are currently on the books and Steps is their life line, not only providing conductive education for the children but also supporting parents too, as living with a disabled child is physically and emotionally exhausting and being able to talk with parents who are walking a similar path is vital. Steps also organise days out for the families which means parents can feel confident going out to public places with their child knowing they have the support of Steps if they encounter difficulties or prejudice. Steps have an open door policy and parents are able to self-refer, if you think Steps could help you contact Trish on 01509 506878 or visit www.stepscentre.org.uk

JAMIE MCMAHON T: 01530 277825 E: jamie@labournwl.org.uk

ALL CHANGE FOR LOCAL HOSPITALS In May NHS Chiefs made the decision to close wards at Coalville Hospital and close down Ashby Hospital. These are big decision for North West Leicestershire and they have created great debate. The overall theme of the changes is the NHS’s commitment to see more people cared for in their homes.

CAMPAIGN FOR BETTER TRANSPORT CALLS FOR IVANHOE LINE OPENING I’m delighted the Campaign for Better Transport has joined the ever growing number of local voices calling for the Ivanhoe line to be reopened. Locally we know it would make a massive difference to local people’s lives, but they also see the important role the line could play in the wider network - it’s a no brainier.

Lots of local people have responded to my ‘Let’s talk about North West Leicestershire’ survey letting me know that the cost of driving is a big problem for them, but with little public transport too many local people are forced into the car. We need to be ambitious for North West Leicestershire and seeing this line reopened would be a big step forward. I’m committed to making the reopening of the line a top priority as the MP for North West Leicestershire. That’s why I’ve already held discussions with Labour colleagues from across the East Midlands and in Westminster about the line and how we can see it reopened for the benefit of local people.

RETURN 2 ROUNDERS Fun for all as a brilliant family activity. Come along and learn skills and games. Newbridge High School, Forest Road, Coalville. Friday evening 6 – 7pm. Price is £2.00.

In the case of Coalville’s ward 4 we’re clear that elderly dementia care will not be improved by closing wards. What we need is a care system that puts local people first and works for them. However, the truth is far different. Elderly people who pay for personal care out of a local authority budget are waiting months to be reimbursed. I’ve picked up casework for a man who has been waiting 15 months for a walk-in-shower to be installed in his house since leaving hospital, he’s told simply to sink wash. We need to put greater support in for carers, ensuring their loved ones get the respite care they need quickly, not having to wait for months. It’s only when the NHS and Councils tackle these problems that we’ll see real improvement in the care of people currently using Coalville Hospital and at the moment we are a long way from that improvement. The closure of Ashby Hospital is also sad news for local people. With nearly 20% of inpatients to Ashby Hospital come from Coalville’s LE67 postcode, meaning the closure will impact on people right across North West Leicestershire. The NHS launched a consultation with two options: keep Ashby Hospital open or close it. As Labour’s Parliamentary candidate I called for people to ‘write in’ to the consultation with a third option. I also met with the review leads to put the concerns of local residents directly. I called for:

1. More reassurance that services such as physiotherapy and outpatients currently provided at Ashby Hospital will remain well provided for in Ashby, with no gaps. 2. More proof that the alternative idea of more care in people’s homes works. 3. More information on the future of the building and the development of a new Health Centre. I’m pleased to see that the review leads have listened to the concerns of both local people and me. They have gone some way to reassure people on the future of services in Ashby and it’s vital that local people are being listened to. I’m particularly they have committed to invest more in additional community based services in North West Leicestershire. However more reassurances are needed. They’ve set out how they are to reduce the number of people needing inpatients but not the evidence to back up claims that care in the home produces better outcomes for patients. They’ve also failed to tackle concerns about the future of what is a historic and much loved building. I hope they resolve these concerns and I hope to meet the leads once again to discuss these points. The Tories and Lib Dems Government indulged in a £3billion top-down NHS reorganisation David Cameron promised wouldn’t happen. The Liberal Democrats are supporting a Government that has cut local government hardest and fastest, putting more pressure than ever before on the budgets of social care and housing adaptations. I work with the NHS and Councils’ social care teams every day working for a disabled children’s charity. I know we need a Government that genuinely believes in the NHS and wants to get the system working around the patient.

COALVILLE LAW EXPERTS WELCOMES INCREASED FOCUS ON MEDIATION IN DIVORCES

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

ANDREW BRIDGEN T: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk One of my top priorities when I stood to be Member of Parliament for North West Leicestershire was to see the high rate of youth unemployment tackled and an increase in Apprenticeships. I have strongly believed for many years that more value should be placed on vocational education as it is in Countries such as Germany.

One of the region’s leading law experts has welcomed new legislation which sees more of a focus on the role of mediators in divorces. QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank said the law changes, which came into operation in April, will see mediators involved in divorces where there are children involved or financial matters. “Divorce is often a very painful process for those involved and the involvement of an impartial third party trying to find a resolution is welcome for not only the couple involved but all those associated with them,” said Kathryn Hicklin, head of family law at the practice. “There will also be an obligation by the court to consider mediation at every stage even after court proceedings start,” she added. “It is a well-known fact that divorce is one of the most stressful situations that people can encounter and all that can be done to make this easier on parties has

communityeye

to be seen as a step in the right direction,” added Ms Hicklin, whose firm have branches in both Coalville and Hinckley. The changes come shortly after research by QualitySolicitors showed that 89 per cent of those going through a divorce are worried about their direction in life post-divorce, with two-thirds of divorcing parents also worried about the effects on children, and three-quarters of couples have to completely reassess their finances. “With the correct professional help life can get better sooner rather than later,” she added. “Divorce is an enormously traumatic ordeal and speaking to people like us will help point those struggling in the right direction.” She added that QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank’s first advice is free and anybody wishing to know more about the issues surrounding divorce is urged to call on 01530 510666.

When this Government came to office, my good friend John Hayes MP in his role as Minister for Skills & Enterprise, stated that this Government will create more apprenticeships than Modern Britain has ever seen. The result of this has seen the number of work places employing Apprenticeships in North West Leicestershire increase from 430 in 2010/2011 to 610 in 2012/2013, an increase of nearly 50%. There is only so much Government can do though as these apprenticeships have to be delivered on the ground and gives every youngster an opportunity, so it was my pleasure to visit Whitwick Community Enterprises recently who are delivering Talent Match in partnership with Princes Trust working in Greenhill. Talent Match targets young people who are furthest from the jobs market, including those who are completely outside of the benefits, work and training system and facing severe barriers to gaining the skills they need to get into work. In this area, it provides an intensive support programme for people aged 18-24, resident in Greenhill ward, and unemployed for a year. It is having extremely positive results with all 14 people on the programme engaged in some training. I have been working with Whitwick Community Enterprises since being elected and I pay tribute to the excellent work they have been doing to offer work placements and training to those who are not in Education, Employment and Training. They are getting a lot of young lives back on track and are to be congratulated along with all of

those companies and organisations providing our youngsters with career opportunities. The latest unemployment figures continue to show a very encouraging trend when it comes to youth unemployment with a near 50% drop since the last election from 475 to 245. I want these numbers to come down even more by continuing to increase apprenticeships and encouraging business to expand and create jobs as part of our long term economic plan. Overall unemployment continues to fall in the district and the claimant count now stands at 2.2%. That means since the start of last year, there are nearly 700 more people in work in North West Leicestershire and paying taxes. In other issues over the last month, I have raised the safety of night workers in Parliament prompted by the recent attack on a taxi driver in Ashby. In my research on the issue, I was shocked to learn of the significant increase in assaults on NHS staff, many working at night. It is totally unacceptable that workers should be put in danger in this way while going about their job, and it is something I will look to follow up to see what can be done to improve workers personal safety. I also became the first MP to attend and speak at a Leicestershire County Council meeting for many years last month when I joined residents of Ashby in speaking against the proposals for Market Street, which I am pleased to say have been scrapped. I am also continuing to appeal for the future of Snibston Discovery Park for reasons I outlined in the past and I was pleased that the prorogation of Parliament allowed me to attend a recent Friends of Snibston meeting.

‘INTO THE VALLEY’ ROTARY DONATION

"Into the Valley...." was a line from The Charge of the Light Brigade' that two Shepshed Charnwood Rotarians, Paul Miles and Peter Hickling, did not expect to hear on their recent visit to Sutton Bonington Primary School. After all, they were there to donate money to further expand the facilities for the pupils to grow their own produce.

Listening to several poetry recitals from a range of authors was a real treat as each one was read with clarity and emotion and, even more surprisingly, no prompts. This was part of an inter schools event which the Rotarians were lucky enough to be invited to share.

The money came from part of the collection taken locally by Santa and the Rotary float and both Mark and Peter thanked all who had contributed. For further information about your local Rotary Club please e-mail rotarysc@hotmail.co.uk Rotarian Peter Hickling (left) and Head Teacher Mark Brumwell

After presentation of various awards and a rendering of 'Albert and the Lion', the assembly drew to a close far too quickly. The Rotarians left knowing that they had helped, in some small way, a very happy and industrious school.

OPEN BOX PROMOTIONS RAISES £964.05 FOR DLR AIR AMBULANCE

President David Fountain (left) and Rodger Hutchinson from the Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood received some valuable training in construction techniques when they visited the Hathern C.of E. primary school.

Open Box Promotions Ltd, the home of Your Local and Community Eye magazines, took part in the Big Business Challenge competing against other business’ to try and raise as much money as possible for DLR Air Ambulance in just a few weeks! In addition to our ‘Wear it Yellow’ day, On Friday 14th February Andy from Open Box Promotions did a sponsored walk from Leicester Forest East to Coalville to raise much needed funds for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance service.

They were instructed in the finer points of Lego block building by the members of the school council. These pupils are elected by their peers to discuss issues and ideas from their own classes, and then feed back any decisions made. One such idea was to purchase a quantity of building blocks that could be used by the school to help develop social and communication skills whilst also having some fun.

The Rotary club were pleased to be able to donate a sum of money to this worthwhile project. The money came from part of the collection taken locally by Santa and the Rotary float and Head Teacher Stephen Dunn and council coordinator Rachel Abbott thanked all who had contributed.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

NATURAL HEALTH ACHES & PAINS

Love Your Feet! FUNGAL NAIL INFECTION

As I sit here to start writing, I am aware of my stiff neck from the spring digging in the allotment. The usual aching knees that I get at the end of each day are brought on from years of football, long distance running and old age. Together with my slipped disc, you must see that I am well qualified to talk about aches and pains. However, I still manage to have a very active life. In fact I tell my wife that I am a walking miracle! Homeopathy can be of great benefit for aches and pains regardless of their cause. The key when deciding which remedy to use is their modalities: these three remedies have their own ‘keynotes’ which you have to match up with the type of pain that you are experiencing. Bryonia 30 is helpful when pain increases with even the slightest movement, with stitching pain and worsens with change in weather. Rhus Tox 30 is indicated when the pain is better for movement, pressure or heat application, but is worse for sitting still. Ruta Grav 30 seems to act on a deeper pain, that is typically worse at night or lying down and if the pain is less during the daytime.

Submitted by Sally Prytherch Hinds Feet Foot Care T: 07806786616 E: hindsfeetfootcare@gmail.com W: www.hindsfeetfootcare.co.uk

It can be that more than one remedy is indicated so it is fine to alternate them. Take up to 4 doses a day (dissolved under the tongue) until the pain subsides. Finally if the problem seems to have started after a bump or fall take a few doses of Arnica 30 and then assess the situation. All of these natural supplements are highly effective both for the initial pain relief and repairing damaged tissue and joints. Finally, I would like to recommend a couple of manipulative techniques that I have found very helpful. The Alexander Technique is a gentle system that reprograms your movement through classes that teach you to move in a much more natural way. The treatment that I use on a regular basis now is Bowen Technique. This is a gentle muscle manipulation that releases pain and re-aligns the body. By Ken Teppin (M.C.P.H)

HERE COMES THE SUN We all know by now what damage over exposure to UV rays can do to our skin, but have you considered the damage it can do to your eyes? Sunburn isn’t just limited to your skin, your eyes can get burnt too. Over-exposure to ultraviolet light, such as a day at the beach without proper eye protection, can cause a temporary but painful burn to the surface of the eye, similar to sunburn on the skin.

25

Whilst this sounds particularly unpleasant, it is the risk of developing cataracts that makes over exposure so dangerous for your eyes. The damage occurs by too much UVA and UVB light entering the eye. Your eye needs light to work, but in particularly sunny conditions, this means an increase of harmful rays hitting the retina. The main way to protect your eyes against damage is to wear

Fungal nail infection often starts as a skin infection (athletes foot) and creeps on slowly and unnoticed. Like athletes foot it thrives in warm, damp, dark conditions. It is characterised by discolouration of the nail which usually appears yellow, brown or white in colour and nails can become thickened, brittle and porous. It can be a huge source of embarrassment especially in the summer months when choice of footwear would be sandals or open toe shoes. The condition often starts as a small patch in the large toe nail and can eventually affect all nails if untreated. Treatment usually requires a two pronged approach of removing as much of the diseased nail as possible and treating topically with a lacquer or liquid painted onto the nail regularly to inhibit growth of the fungus. Various

sunglasses which can filter out the UVA and UVB rays, whilst still allowing sufficient light in for you to see. Not all sunglasses have lenses that are of a high enough quality to do this, so it is important that you check the lenses are 100% UV filters. And it’s not just light from the sun reflected light from surfaces such as snow or water can intensify the amount of UV being absorbed by your eyes, therefore. sunglasses are vital if you are in these conditions on a frequent basis. As with all eye care, you need to consider the purpose of your sunglasses. Wrap around styles might be better for winter sports, where as tinted lenses could prove to be better for general wear outdoors. Either way, looking after your eyes and protecting them against the sun is a vital part of your optical care. So whilst you’re

products are available from the local pharmacy. Consistent application of products and filing is key and it can take up to eighteen months to eradicate depending on severity of the infection and rate of nail re-growth. Professional help may be needed to remove the diseased nail. Oral medication may sometimes be prescribed by the GP but is known to have side effects. Like athletes foot, fungal nail infection can spread from person to person, so good foot hygiene such as separate towels is important and early identification will mean a shorter length of time for treatment . stocking up on suntan lotion to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, consider your eyes too. After all, donning a pair of trendy sunglasses doesn’t just protect your eyes, its bang on trend too! Spectacle wearers can also enjoy the benefits of sunglasses. If you are wanting sunglasses for driving, or perhaps reading on holiday, or simply to replace your ordinary glasses in the sunshine, prescription sunglasses are also available in varifocal and bifocal lenses to help you use them for all occasions. Spectacle wearers can still get UV protection in clear lenses, ask us about the latest lenses with UV protection. DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL As I write we are in full flow with our preparations for Download festival which starts on Wednesday the 11th June through to Sunday 15th June. I have to confess that I am not the biggest fan of heavy metal, however I am proud to say that I know at least one of the bands, which is Aerosmith, and they are on the main stage for Sunday evening. For many residents across North West Leicestershire, major events at Donington Park are a regular aspect of life, however our policing plan is as much about delivering a safe event for participants and fans, as it is for local people being able to carry out their day to day lives without too much disruption. In any case if you are planning to travel in and around Donington Park and East Midlands Airport during the week of Download, please plan your journey and allow extra time to get to your destination. If you use Twitter follow @downloadcops for the latest information relating to Download and Donington Park.

QUALITY OF SERVICE As a public facing organisation we deal with a wide variety of situations and work hard to keep local communities safe. Very often that is recognised when a member of the public writes in to thank our officers, and I am always delighted to receive such a letter. I also believe it is important that internally, we recognise our staff who go the ‘extra mile’ and deliver consistently exceptional service.

During the course of the last year James has dealt with a high profile and long running case of anti-social behaviour which resulted in the offender being sent to prison. The case attracted national attention and has been featured on Channel 5. More recently James has been working on the problem of off-road motor cycles in the Pitbanks area of Ellistown. However I was delighted that James has won the Leicestershire Police ‘Your Values at Work’ award for April 2014. This is an internal award and recipients are nominated by their colleagues. James was nominated by 15 of his colleagues and the nominations reflect the values James not only demonstrates in his day to day dealings with the public, but are regularly reflected in his support to his fellow officers at North West Leicestershire.

WORLD CUP At the time of writing the World Cup is only a few weeks away. In one of our webchats recently we had a bit of fun with an online poll which asked about England’s chances. 75% of those who answered thought England would get out of the group but would not progress much further than that! However, we are aware that many people will be visiting their pub to watch the England games, and we have already been working with many of the licensees across the area to support them, particularly for the first game which will be late at night, and also coincides with Download. We have been in close liaison with the Pubwatch schemes in both Ashby and Coalville, and we have drawn up a patrol plan which is linked to the premises that will be opening late or showing matches. How far do you think England will get?

Our enquiries are still ongoing at the moment and I will provide an update next month. Inspector Helena Bhakta

Welcome RENAISSANCE BOUTIQUE on Belvoir Road Coalville - a first for the area for The Mother of the Bride and Bride Groom. Owner of RENAISSANCE, Dawn Baker, was born in Park Road, Coalville. She is a very busy wife and mum and an active member of Christ Church on London Road. Dawn and her staff raise money for many local charities with their fashion shows. Dawn started her business as a dress agency some 3 years ago and moved into Belvoir Road in August 2013 as the business needed to be extended. This was due to needing more room for the new mothers of the bride and groom department in order to house all the new outfits and accessories which has continued to grow. The boutique has been extended again recently to accommodate space for all the new daywear ranges she now stocks. Renaissance offers that personal touch to each and every individual that visits the boutique. RENAISSANCE BOUTIQUE is open from 9.30am to 5.00pm Monday through to Saturday in order for you to browse. • Personal fittings • Out of hours appointment • Full mother of the Bride/Groom outfit Hat and handbag hire service Dawn is no newcomer to the business industry, as she is also currently a Director of an Engineering Company in Derbyshire, but wanted to fulfil her dream of launching a retail outlet before reaching the tender age of 50, the aim of which, is for fellow women to enjoy a classic ‘age appropriate’ shopping experience . You can call Dawn on 01530 836301 or e-mal dawn@renaissance-boutique.com alternatively visit her website www.renaissancedressagency.com Dawn would like to say ‘thank you’ to a few special people who have helped to create RENAISSANCE BOUTIQUE, firstly husband David, for believing in her and her dream to own her very own shop, Mike Ward - for naming that dream shop, all her close friends and family, friends for their continuous support.

BETHANY AND FRIENDS DONATE TO CHARITY

The two friends had a laugh about the amount of clothes and trinkets they had and how they hated to throw things away.

Summer had almost arrived and Bethany was emptying her house ready to give it a good clean, one by one she moved everything out into the garden so she could wipe down the walls, mop the floors and polish the windows till they sparkled.

Daniel Dog was walking past on his afternoon stroll when he heard the laughing, “What’s going on here then?” He said “Someone moving house?!”

She hopped out with a basket of hats and scarves then back in again, then she hopped out with a box of baking trays, then back in again. This went on for quite some time! Christie cat had heard the rattling of boxes and popped her head over the wall to find out what was going on. She could barely see Bethany over the huge pile of boxes!

Christie and Bethany explained what was going on and why they were laughing. “You don’t need to throw things you don’t use anymore away, have you considered donating it to charity?”

Bethany was just coming out of the house with another basket of hats when Christie asked her what she was doing. “I’m emptying my house so I can clean it,” Said Bethany “But I didn’t realise I had so much stuff! I don’t remember buying most of it and I’m sure I haven’t worn half of these hats!” Christie replied “It’s good to empty rooms out sometimes, I really need to do my house. I always find things I forgot I had or that I don’t use and are just taking up space”. “I don’t think it will all fit back in!” Joked Bethany. “I’m sure this can’t all me mine!”

Daniel went on to explain that there were many charity shops in the town who needed second hand clothes and trinkets. He explained that they sell them to help raise money for good causes. Bethany though that this was a brilliant idea and so once she had finished cleaning, Christie and Daniel helped her to sort out what she wanted to keep and what she wanted to donate. The following day the friends all took Bethany’s donations to the local charity shop who were very happy to receive them. Bethany felt very happy to have made a difference to others by giving away things she didn’t want any more. Well done Bethany, giving to charity is a very kind thing to do. Can you think of anything you don’t use any more, or any clothes you have grown out of that you could donate? Why not ask your parents to help you sort your bedroom out and take some items down to a charity shop?

Why don’t clams donate to charity? They’re too shellfish! Last night, one of the presenters on Children in Need said, “Pick up your phone and pledge.” I’m still sitting here, with the phone in one hand and a can of furniture polish in the other, wondering how that’s supposed to help. Today, a man knocked my front door. He said he was collecting for the local swimming pool... So I gave him two buckets of water.

QUICK CRAFT PLASTIC SPOON PUPPETS

Support Your local charities

YOU WILL NEED:

Support your local charities, provide them with some cash.

• Coloured paper • Glue • Tape or glue gun • Plastic spoons

29

Show your generosity. Come on and make a splash. Your caring side you’ll surely have to show. So let us see the colour of your dough.

HOW YOU DO IT: • We used strips of coloured paper: two 1/2- by 11-inch ones for each leg, and two 1/4- by 11-inch ones for each arm. Help your child glue the ends of 2 strips together, forming a right angle (A). • Then show them how to alternately fold the strips over each other (B and C), creating springy, accordionlike folds. When they reach the ends of the strips, glue them together. Repeat for each arm and leg. • With tape or a low-temperature glue gun (an adult’s job), attach the completed limbs to a plastic spoon, then add a paper mouth, eyes, and hair. For curly hair, just roll paper strips around a pencil. Allow the glue to dry, and the spoonfolk are ready to play.

Charity begins at home, or so they say. Where there’s a will you know there’s certainly a way. Don’t go and waste your money, let it do some good. Surely now your heart’s not made of wood. It gives us all a glow of satisfaction.. Just to see philanthropy in action. Come loosen up your purse strings. Do your bit. And show yourself to be a generous Brit. By Chris Rose
