t’s hard to believe we’re on the run up to Christmas! The children are already practicing for their Christmas performances which I look forward to watching, and whispers of what they would like on their Christmas list are starting too!
I’m also pleased to be able to tell you that we are expanding here at Open Box Promotions and I have now moved from the Sales Team over to the position of Editor for all seven of our community magazines. This has created a vacancy on our sales team and we look forward to welcoming a new member to our team shortly.
We were so spoilt by the warm autumn that many of us haven’t started thinking about the winter weather, so the feature this month is all about preparing for winter and how to keep yourself and your home safe. I’ve also included my favourite winter recipe, lamb stew, a perfect dish for warming you up after a long day.
As always we continue to look for new advertisers and contributors for our publications. If you would like to submit an article please email myself on editor@openboxpromotions.co.uk Alternatively if you wish to have a chat about joining us as an advertiser please call the team on 0800 6446 150 and they will talk you through the best advertising option for your business.

APPLE DAY
CHARITY QUIZ NIGHT AND RAFFLE
We had a wonderful Apple Day at Donington le Heath Manor House last Sunday, 19 October, with apple tasting, apple bobbing, pruning displays, applethemed food and competitions, garden tours and lots more! We thought you might be interested in letting people know about our community ‘found’ poem, which was created by our Parish Engagement Officer Llynda, Coalville’s County Councillor Terri Eynon and the Manor House staff, from visitors and their kennings: A ‘kenning’ is an Old Norse way of writing simple poems, rather like a riddle. After experiencing the tastes and textures of everything applerelated, visitors to the Manor House were asked to find two short words that describe - without being too obvious what an apple means to them. The twoword poems were then grouped into verses on the branches of a tree.
On 21st Nov 2014 at North Street Club, Whitwick, 8pm start. Teams of 4, £5 per person. Cash prize for the winning team.

MARKFIELD & IBSTOCK LIBRARIES BOOK SALE
Project Linus began in America in 1995 when Karen Loucks saw a newspaper article showing how much a comfort blanket had helped a child cancer victim and decided to organise blankets for her local children’s cancer unit and started spreading the word. Since that time over 4 million blankets and quilts have been delivered worldwide. The organisation began in the UK in March 2000 as a result of a quilter’s desire to help children in need. Our volunteers deliver about 2,000 quilts and blankets to sick, disabled or disadvantaged children across the UK each month.
Hannah's Room began as Claire Tinsley's hobby in 1997 and has grown considerably since then. Started initially in Claire's daughter's bedroom, (hence the name Hannah’s Room) it quickly grew to fill their large house in Yorkshire.
They cannot reach out to every distressed child but they can help to provide them with tangible evidence that someone cares, along with the physical reassurance that comes with being snuggled up in a quilt. They always try to deliver quilts and blankets to children who are local to the makers.
Today Hannah’s Room in Coalville is owned and run by another of Claire’s daughters Roxana Pallatt, who welcomes anyone into the shop for a chat, to browse, or for a cup of tea or coffee. Roxana is a lovely talented lady who offers advice and inspiration to those who visit her shop.
The event was held at Hannah’s Room in Coalville, a new shop located at 8b Hotel St, which opened in June 2014. Providing quilting and patchwork workshops and courses they also have a wide range of beautiful fabrics on sale.
If you’re interested in supporting Project Linus UK or taking part in any courses or events at Hannah’s Room just pop along to the store, visit the website for more details www.hannahsroomonline.co.uk or call 01530 588890.

ICT FOR ATC!
THE PURRRRFECT PANTOMIME AT HUGGLESCOTE
Coalville Air Cadets are appealing for your vote of support in their bid to upgrade their IT technology and equipment. 1188 (Coalville) Squadron has applied to the North West Leicestershire District Council £20,000-for-Seven funding and the bid is through to the public vote stage. The project is one of eight applications for the £10,000 grant so your vote is important to the cadets! All the training for cadets is online now and the lack of ICT restricts the number of cadets who can access this. Cadets are offered training in leadership skills and DofE. Leaders want to upgrade so they can offer more of the opportunities available at the Coalville squadron to more young people from Coalville and the surrounding areas. Fg Off Rebekah Harrison of the 1188 squadron said, ” The Air Cadet Organisation offers a wide range of opportunities for qualifications to both staff and cadets. But we need to move with the times. A lot of the cadet training now takes place online and we need suitable technical hardware to enable the cadets to pass their qualifications and make the most of the opportunities available. It is really important that cadets’ CVs stand out from the crowd.”
This year’s Hugglescote pantomime is Dick Whittington and his cat and will see St Johns Church, transformed into London town.
Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said "We're putting the decision making into the hands of the district with a public vote, and I would encourage everyone to get online and vote for your favourite projects. Really show support for communities who have fantastic ideas on how to improve their areas." The link to the voting page is: www.nwleics.gov.uk/pages/247vote
This is a Vicky Orman’s new version of this classic adventure story and has all the well-known characters, plus two fairies, Bowbells and Dingdong, a remarkable talking cat that only the audience can hear, a truly villainous King Rat and his two ‘henchrats’ Itchy and Scratchy. The fun is provided by Sarah the Cook and her son, Idle Jack. Dick Whittington comes to London with his cat Tommy to seek his fortune. He is employed by Alderman Fitzwarren and soon falls in love the Alderman’s daughter Alice. However
Make your vote count so more young people can take up the offer at 1188 squadron!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Martyn Kemp feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double
glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up
when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Coalville and the surrounding area and Martyn is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SCHOOL NEWS
WEST END STAR AT CASTLE ROCK HIGH SCHOOL
CASTLE ROCK STEEL PAN BAND
Castle Rock High School had a fabulous week last week where they had West End performer Carl Sanderson in their school to work with their students! Carl has performed in the West End and on TV and has played parts such as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray and the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, as well as performing in Starlight Express, Cats, Crazy for You and Guys and Dolls. Carl shared his expertise with the Castle Rock high School students where they put together a fantastic performance using many different skills. Look out for photos from these workshops on Castle Rock High School’s Twitter account and on their website!
In 2013, a young group of Gifted and Talented music students formed a small musical ensemble, performing on Steel Pans. Pat Monroe who often performs in the ensemble, Panetiquette, runs the group every Friday after school. In addition to approximately thirty years of performance experience in concerts and competitions, Pat is a well-established tutor. Over the past year the group have learnt many pieces
well up to performances standard and now have large collection of wellknown songs and melodies included in their repertoire. Not only do they often perform regularly in the school but are often booked for outside events including Coalville’s ‘Picnic in the Park’. Due to the Steel Pan Group’s success, there seems to be more and more students wanting to join, and this year the music department opened up a workshop aimed at the dedicated and committed students who wish to carry on making the ensemble a success. Look out for them performing at Coalville’s Food and Drink Festival.

LOTTERY FUNDING TO TRANSFORM NURSERY GARDEN Ibstock Day Nursery has been awarded £10,000 by the Big Lottery Fund to transform its garden into an interactive, multi-sensory play area. Phase one of the revamped garden will include a trim trail, tactile surfaces, an artificial river, a new sand pit, a water wall, and a muddy kitchen.
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS Twenty young entrepreneurs from Ibstock Community College have taken on ‘The Fiver Challenge’ - setting up their own businesses with just £5. Over the next few weeks, the Year 9 students will work in groups to invest the money and launch their businesses, specialising in everything from cupcake sales to car washing. Other ideas include smoothie making, a fancy dress ‘photo booth’ for novelty photographs, a football tournament with refreshments, and buying and selling phone cases.
Students are hoping to attract potential customers at the college’s open evening on Thursday 25 September. To qualify for their £5 funding, teams must first draw up a business plan, including costings, financial projections and timescales, and take into account issues such as market research and health and safety. Teacher Ben Hemmerman said: “This project ties in with the college’s commitment to 21st century learning which embraces aspects such as entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The students have been really enthusiastic about setting up their own businesses – they seem to like the idea of making a bit of money!”
MEDIA SUITE & OPEN EVENING AT NEWBRIDGE Thursday 2nd October marked this year’s annual Newbridge Open Evening; which was a great success. The Open Evening sessions allows perspective students and their families, along with Year 7 students and their families to explore the school’s facilities and resources. Visitors had the
opportunity to talk to members of staff and current students too. The evening was a huge success! This year it also used to showcase our brand new, state of the art Media Suite. Which was officially opened
Acting nursery manager Joanne Sparrow said: “The garden is a lovely space where we have a lot of fun, but a revamp will be wonderful. Being outside is all part of the learning experience for the children. It is going to have a big impact.” Work on phase one will begin in November. Staff and supporters of the nursery have already begun planning events to fund phase two of the garden improvements, which will feature a nature area, a music area and a track for ride-on vehicles.
A ladies’ night to raise funds for phase two will be held at the nursery on Thursday 30 October from 7 – 9pm. Independent, local traders will be selling gifts and other goods during a fun night of shopping. Tickets are £7, which includes a complimentary drink and a goody bag. For more information, contact the nursery on 01530 265829
by Mr Goacher (Headteacher) and Mr Little (Curriculum Leader of Performing Arts).
As our media course develops, we plan to introduce video editing and sound effects into the students’ work.
This new suite has been built especially to house our new media course, but it will also be used to enhance other curriculum areas such as Music, Design and Art.
Alongside the opening of our new Media suite, we have begun a new initiative “Student Media Officers” Their role will be to report on what’s happening within the school and the local community. Being students they will have a greater insight to what other students are up to and their achievements. We will be celebrating success in the students’ reports and as their role develops we will be producing a student publication whilst also featuring reports in Newbridge News.
The Media Suite is primarily used by Music and Media and it’s already had a profound effect on the students’ work. Music students are writing and producing phenomenal music tracks, similar to which you would hear in the Sunday charts, whilst media students have been getting their hands into stop frame animation by creating their own Lego movies. Our Photography enrichment students have been using the suite to edit and manipulate the photos they have been capturing.
If you came to the open evening you may have met our new Student Media Officers Isabel Lowen, Daniel Slack, John Stephenson, Keanne LonsdaleEllis, Sophie Cornes, Thomas Cornes, Holly Folwell, Tyler Symons and Tara Reynolds. Watch this space for exciting pieces from the Media Officers!

RESEARCH SHOWS TOO MANY WAITING TOO LONG BEFORE MAKING WILLS WARNS LEGAL EXPERT
11
Love Your Feet! Did you know that
PHOTO: Frankie Harwood, Wills expert at QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank
The region’s best-known law firm has warned that too many people are waiting too long to make Wills thereby potentially causing havoc for their families. Frankie Harwood of QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank said recent research proved there is wide scale reluctance in the UK to make Wills. The research carried out by Remember a Charity, a body encouraging charitable donations in Wills, has found out that the average Briton waits until his or her 70s before facing their mortality. “The average age is 72 that most people finally get around to drawing up a document that has a huge impact on those left behind,” said Ms Harwood. “Also only one in five people over the age of 50 are yet to discuss their Will with their family or friends,” she added. “We cannot say that these statistics are a shock to us as professionals who draw up Wills, but it does highlight a problem, when the average man in the UK lives to 77 and woman 81.”
Ms Harwood said this reluctance to face mortality is why so many people die each year intestate, which means without a Will. She added that only a third of people make a Will before they die, despite the need for Wills being greater than ever. “The issue is two-fold, first making a Will is seldom urgent and therefore tends to be put on the back burner, and secondly there is reluctance by many people to face the uncomfortable fact that they are not going live for ever,” said Ms Harwood. “We need people to help their family at what will be one of the most traumatic times in their lives as the last thing loved ones need when they are grieving is a family falling out,” she said. “For the good of your family it really makes sense to do it as soon as possible, especially at a time when family structures are more complex than ever,” she said. SEE & BE SEEN… By qualified registered Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians. What’s the difference? An Optometrist (Ophthalmic Optician) is a primary health care specialist and is trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality and problems with general health. They give advice on visual problems and if necessary prescribe spectacles or contact lenses. An Optometrist studies at University for at least three years and then works in an optical practice/hospital under supervision for a year before taking their final professional exams. A Dispensing Optician is trained to dispense and fit spectacles and other optical aids, working from a prescription that the Optometrist has issued. They advise on various
types of lenses and spectacle frames, including advice on style, weight and colour. They also advise patients on how to wear and care for their spectacles and with further training, their contact lenses. A Dispensing Optician studies for three years, either two years full time at college and a year in practice under supervision or for three years day/block release whilst working full time in a practice. Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians work closely together and take into account each patient’s visual, lifestyle and vocational needs. Both Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians practising in the UK must be registered with the General Optical Council, the profession’s regulatory body. When choosing an Optometrist, look out for the letters FCOptom or MCOptom after their name. Look for the letters FBDO when choosing a Dispensing Optician. This means they are registered and adhere to high standards of clinical practice and undertake continuous educational training.

PLANTING BARE-ROOT HEDGING & TREES
T
he weather has finally turned autumnal after a long sunny summer. The leaves on the trees have been taking on burnished copper, gold and ruby tints and are now being shed from the branches ready for the onset of winter. Once the dormant season is upon us it’s a good time to transplant bare-root plants – those which have been raised in a field and then lifted & the soil removed. The added bonus of bare-root plants is that they are much cheaper than container grown plants. Autumn is a good time to plant them as there’s time for them to settle and establish before the warmth of the spring comes. Trees & shrubs are available bare-root and from November onwards they’ll be offered in garden centres, nurseries and online. As the plants are dormant there’s not much to look at but when selecting plants look for undamaged branches & bark to ensure the plants are fit and healthy. My garden has tall boundary hedges of Privet and the garden itself is subdivided by Beech hedges and trained fruit trees, all of which were sourced as bare-root plants. Fruit trees are the typical bare-root trees on offer in garden centres. Apples, Plums and Pears are easy to find. Choose a variety based on the crop, size, shape and pollination requirements (info will be on the label). Ornamental trees like Rowans, Hawthorns and Acers are popular too, choose a variety that will grow to a suitable size and give interest in flowers, foliage or berries.
Bundles of hedging plants known as ‘Whips’, are available from November to March. Hedges are great for defining a boundary, screening a building or dividing a garden into sections. There are lots of varieties to choose from. For formal edging there are evergreens like Box and Yew and for taller boundary hedges, semievergreens like Privet or Beech are suitable. Trimmed twice a year these can be kept neat & tidy. Native hedging typically consists of a mix of deciduous varieties which when planted together provides an ideal habitat for wildlife. A traditional mix includes Haw & Black Thorn, Hazel, Dogwood and Wild Rose & Crab Apple. Deciduous mixes are less formal and can be trimmed once a year or less frequently for an informal look. Bare-root plants are pretty easy to plant. Choose a day which is frost free and when the soil is not waterlogged. Keep the roots of the new plants cool and moist (not wet) until you are ready to plant. HOW TO PLANT A BARE-ROOT TREE: 1. Turn the ground adding plenty of compost & fertiliser . 2. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the spread of the roots. 3. Place the tree in the hole ensuring the roots will be covered and the base of the tree is at the right level. Fan out the roots. 4. Place a tree stake alongside the stem & between the roots. Tap in to give the tree support & add a tree tie. 5. Back fill the hole, firming the soil and water the area thoroughly.
HOW TO PLANT A BARE-ROOT HEDGE: 1. Turn the ground adding plenty of compost & fertiliser. 2. Rake & level the soil. 3. Mark out a straight line & lay the hedging ‘whips’ along it, at the appropriate spacing. 4. Create a slit trench (push the spade in & rock forward to create a slit shaped opening along the length). 5. Fan out the roots & place in the trench, firming in well. 6. For a double row repeat the process at the required spacing. 7. Water in thoroughly. The trees/hedging may need watering in the spring-summer after planting, then after a year or two the trees or hedging will be established and growing strongly. As November comes to an end, thoughts turn towards the festive season. Next month I’ll be looking at bringing elements of the garden indoors to create seasonal wreaths and decorations for Christmas using foliage, seed heads, cones and berries. If your borders need rejuvenating, your garden needs a fresh new look or you are looking for design ideas, a Consultation or Planting Plan may be just what you need. Take a look at my website for details of the services I offer www.belgrierson.co.uk or call me on 07506 750250.

MY CALL FOR LOCAL TORY MP TO BACK NHS BILL This month I have written to North West Leicestershire’s Tory MP Andrew Bridgen calling on him to back a Bill that would protect the NHS from the Government’s rapid privatisation. The Health & Social Care Act 2012 requires mandatory tendering of services and gives a role in the NHS to the competition authorities for the first time. It also allows NHS hospitals to earn up to half their income from treating private patients. On November 21st a Bill introduced by Labour MP Clive Efford will have its 2nd Reading in Parliament. The National Health Service (Amended Duties and Powers) Bill repeals the regulations which mandate tendering of services and restores the Private Patient Income cap to levels similar to those that existed in 2010. In short, it would stop the sell-off and restore the right values to the heart of the NHS. At the General Election in 2010, the Tories stood before the voters of North West Leicestershire on a clear commitment of ‘no top-down
reorganisation of the NHS’. Shortly after, this promise was carried into the Coalition Agreement with the Lib Dems. However, within weeks of it being signed, the Tories and Lib Dems in Government brought forward the biggest reorganisation of the NHS in its history, despite huge opposition from patients and health professionals. A reorganisation that placed market forces at the heart of the NHS. Over £10 billion of the NHS budget is now in the hands of private and others providers and a further £5.6 billion of NHS work is out to tender. Four years on people are struggling to get GP appointments, waiting lists are at a six-year high and the NHS recently missed the cancer treatment standard for the first time ever. I do not believe that our Tory MP or David Cameron were even given a mandate from the people of North West Leicestershire to put the NHS up for sale. I want North West Leicestershire’s local Tory MP to take this opportunity and correct this mistake by backing a Bill that will protect the NHS from privatisation.

EQUAL PAY DAY
WELCOMING LABOUR’S ONE WEEK CANCER TEST GUARANTEE PLEDGE
WOMEN LOSE ANOTHER 3 DAYS THIS YEAR In the month of Equal Pay Day new figures reveal women locally earn over 20% less per hour than men.
As Labour’s parliamentary candidate I’ve thrown my backing behind Labour’s new pledge for a one-week cancer test guarantee.
Equal Pay Day – the day women effectively start working for free because they are still paid less than men – falls on 4 November this year, 3 days earlier than in 2013 because of the rising pay gap.
Labour will ensure that NHS patients in England wait no longer than one week for cancer tests and results by 2020. Early diagnosis is a critical tool in the fight against cancer and this pledge could make a huge difference to those at risk from the disease.
Labour have pledged to take action to deliver equal pay by requiring companies with more than 250 workers will to publish their hourly pay gap in their annual report. For the first time employees will be able to see if discrimination exists and whether all the top jobs are still dominated by men.
The number of people waiting too long to get cancer tests are going up in our area. In August this year, 218 patients waited longer than six weeks for tests compared to 84 in the same month last year – that’s up over 250%.
Equal pay is long overdue. Under David Cameron and Nick Clegg the pay gap is back on the rise after years of progress, as families are struggling with rising prices. A Labour Government will take action by asking employers to publish their pay gap be.
The cancer test guarantee will be made possible by £750 million of new investment over five years, raised through a new levy on tobacco firms. I have also backed Labour’s ambition for our health service to have the best cancer survival rates in Europe, which could save up to 10,000 lives a year.
Women in North West Leicestershire will effectively be working for free from this week until the New Year due to the pay gap. Women today still earn just 80p for every male-earned pound. In Government Labour closed the pay gap by almost 1/3rd and closed the gap almost entirely for women under 40, however under the Tories and Lib Dems in Government the pay gap is widening.
When I’m out and about talking to local people I hear how fed up they are of this government undermining and underfunding our health service. Working with the NHS every day in my role for a disabled children’s charity I know NHS staff do a great job but they need our help if the NHS is going to meet the health challenges of the 21st century.

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT
ANDREW BRIDGEN T: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk During my time as first candidate and then MP for North West Leicestershire, Immigration is an issue which has been a constant theme when I speak to constituents. In my time in office, I have done what I can to represent the views that many people in North West Leicestershire have, and that is the net immigration number since 1997 have been too high to be sustainable. Before Tony Blair came to office, net immigration rarely hit significant levels and was certainly measured in the tens rather than the hundreds of thousands. From 1997 onwards there was an explosion in net immigration with numbers not only exceeding six figures but consistently reaching figures well in excess of 250,000 a year. In the early years of this Government, Immigration started to come down and at one stage was down by a third compared to the levels under Labour. However it is no coincidence that in recent months, net immigration figures have picked up again as the UK economy booms and the Eurozone slips back into recession. The fact that immigration figures are so high whilst net immigration from outside the EU has been cut by more than 50,000 and is at its lowest levels since the 1990’s clearly indicates that whilst we have free movement of Labour and a booming
economy, there is nothing we can do to reduce our immigration numbers. This has several effects, at the same time net immigration has averaged over 200,000, millions of workers has seen their pay at a standstill and are looking for reasons why. The fact is the UK is booming and unemployment is falling. Presently I believe North West Leicestershire is one of the fastest growing Districts in the Country with the County of Leicestershire set to grow by 3.4% this year. As this continues, businesses will need to recruit more staff. As we reach the point where those who are unemployed have been unemployed on a long term basis, it is the best opportunity we will have to return them back to work. Employers would prefer a new wave of immigrants to fill the jobs they are creating but that will be no help to those left unemployed and the Government’s welfare budget. I am therefore asking the Prime Minister for a commitment that we apply the same criteria to those wanting to migrate from within the EU to those wanting to migrate from outside the EU. We should be looking to bring in the brightest and the best and it makes no sense that we reject migrants from outside the EU who would make a significant contribution to this Country whilst at the same time having an open door for anyone inside the EU to work
COUNCILLOR
MICHAEL WYATT
in the UK. A points based immigration system applied to all potential migrants is the only way this Country will cut its net migration figures to the levels we had before the last Labour Government. On local issues, I have requested that the Leicestershire Partnership Trust do not dispose of Ashby Hospital for a period of at least 6 months whilst they demonstrate the effectiveness of the Better Care Together programme. The public must have confidence in the new methods of delivering treatment. I will also be actively campaigning against
15
developers who despite High Court judgements and the feelings of local residents, continue to try and develop parts of the Green Wedge. I will also be attending several Remembrance Day services in the District to remember those who have given their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. It will be all the more poignant this year as we mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War.

WYATT TRAVELS TO LONDON TO LOBBY LEICS MPS OVER FIRE AUTHORITY FUNDING
M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk
WYATT WELCOMES COUNCILS DECISION TO LOOK AT BUILDING MORE COUNCIL HOUSES Liberal Democrat Councillor Michael Wyatt has always supported the idea of local Council’s being able to build their own Council houses again. Michael has spent nearly all of his political career passionately defending the rights of council tenants, and their right to a good quality service when it comes to repairs. Cllr Wyatt has recently met with Senior Council official's and the Chief Executive urging them to once again look at the idea of building more rented accommodation in area’s where there is a need. Michael said, "I know that many people are stuck in rented council property which they no longer wish to stay in. It’s not rocket science to work out that you need the right sort of rented properties if you want to help free up council properties which are currently rented by one person who is living in a three or four bedroom house. The only way to solve this problem is for the Council to build their own on land available in the local area.
I am delighted to see after many years of highlighting this problem that they have finally agreed to look at the idea of building more suitable council properties in the local area." Cllr Wyatt will be continuing to push hard to get the Council to build their own rented properties in the Greenhill and other area's on land they already own, and where people need them most. Michael will also be asking the Council to make sure that local people on the waiting list or those wishing to downsize are given priority. Extra bungalows and some one bedroom flats must be our priority if we are to free up the one’s being rented by larger properties currently being rented by single people.
Local Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt travelled to London with a delegation from all Parties to lobby Leicestershire MP’s over the funding of the Fire Authority, which is struggling to find the funds to continue financing the current level of service provided by the Leicestershire Fire Authority for the people of Leicestershire. Cllr Michael Wyatt, Liberal Democrat group Leader on the Fire Authority said, “The fire authority is currently having to find substantial savings, which could potentially impact on frontline services. We travelled to London to speak to local MP’s about the funding concerns we are facing.
I was delighted to see our local MP for North West Leicestershire Andrew Bridgen, and Nicky Morgan the MP for Loughborough agreeing with us that we need to seriously look at the funding problem. I must say though I was very disappointing that not one Labour MP from Leicestershire could find the time to meet us so we could share our concerns with them. Clearly they must feel its acceptable the fire authority is to find over £7 million of savings. Hopefully by travelling to London and showing a united stance the MP’s who took the time to meet us will fight our corner when speaking to the Minister in charge.”

KIDS ZONE
JACK FROST Bethany, Daniel and Christie were having a warming cup of cocoa at Bethany’s house and talking about the very cold weather they were getting. ‘I don’t really like this weather’ shivered Christie, cuddling her mug of cocoa. ‘It’s too cold to go outside and I miss being able to have my windows open.’ ‘I love this weather’ chirped in Bethany it’s so beautiful! Every morning when I wake up it’s like someone has iced the garden, white on all the tips of the grass and on every leaf’. ‘That’s Jack Frost, Bethany’ said Daniel, ‘He visits in the night and puts a white coating all over everything, he even draws the pretty patterns on the windows.’ ‘Jack Frost?’ exclaimed Bethany, ‘you mean someone actually turns it all cold and white? All on their own?’
So she sat and waited and watched a bit longer, her eyes growing heavy and tired, but still he didn’t come. Slowly and without realising it Bethany fell asleep in her chair. The next morning when she woke up, Jack Frost had indeed been and everything was crisp and white again. ‘Oh no’ said Bethany, ‘I fell asleep and missed him.’ Very sadly Bethany got up and went to pick up the tray with the sandwiches and the flask on, which she hadn’t touched the night before. But to her surprise they were gone! The flask was untouched but all that was left on the plate were crumbs! Who could have eaten them, thought Bethany, just then she noticed a frosty pattern on the window, but unlike any she had seen before. It was on the inside of the glass and looked like it said thankyou but it couldn’t………….. could it?
‘Yes, he’s magical’ said Daniel, ‘No-one’s ever seen him, he comes in the middle of the night when everyone’s asleep’. Later that day as Bethany was getting ready for bed, she decided she was going to be the first person to see Jack Frost. So she made up a flask of hot drink and put it on a tray, together with some sandwiches, just in case she got hungry and made herself comfortable in her big armchair, wrapped in a blanket, right by the window. Bethany sat and watched the sun disappear and the moon come up. It was a beautiful clear sky and she could see the stars twinkling. She sat and watched and waited but Jack Frost didn’t appear.
