The children received a letter from the council’s chief executive, Bev Smith asking them to redesign Memorial Square. They then presented design ideas to Bev at the council chambers for an imaginary new square! These remarkable designs, using the latest design software, involved peace gardens and sculptures, together with swimming pools and of course, better wi-fi links! Ismail Dale from English Heritage said: “This award from Historic England is to congratulate Belvoirdale Primary School on their comprehensive engagement with local history and heritage throughout the year groups and with special recognition of the work undertaken with Coalville Heritage Society.” The Coalville Clock Tower Project, which is funded by national lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund, has produced an online education pack which will continue to inspire other children and schools for years to come. Richard Dax, Headteacher at Belvoirdale Primary School said: "The Memorial Clock Tower and War Memorial Education Pack form a wonderful starting point for any creative practitioner and allows children to fully immersed in the subject.” Since his arrival in 2016, Richard and his team have celebrated the rich history of Coalville by designing a new school curriculum that links to local history and historic events. “It is vital that children understand the role that local history plays in their development,” added Richard.

Steve Duckworth, Chairman of the Coalville Heritage Society added: “It was a privilege for the Coalville Heritage Society to work with the children at Belvoirdale and Historic England. It was wonderful that the children had such a good understanding of their heritage and environment which is encouraging for the future of the local heritage.” Steve Duckworth and Stuart Warburton, local historians and members of the Coalville Heritage Society, are currently working with teachers and children from years five and six at Belvoirdale to discover the remarkable journey of the Palitoy factory in Coalville and its connection to the Star Wars toys of the 1970s and 1980s. The learning contains a design project with input from Palitoy’s chief designer, Bob Brechin and a visit to the ‘May the Toys Be With You’ Star Wars exhibition at the old factory site.

Coalville Air Cadets, Local School Children And Veterans Honour Local Victoria Cross Recipients Air cadets from 1188 (Coalville) Squadron joined with pupils from St Clare’s Primary School and members of the British Legion to pay their respects to two local men who were awarded the Victoria Cross.
New Play Equipment For Coalville Forest Adventure Park
Coalville Air cadets joined with pupils from St Clare’s Primary School and members of the Whitwick Branch of the Royal British Legion on Saturday 27th October in two acts of remembrance.
Five new pieces of play equipment in a Coalville park will encourage youngsters to enjoy the outdoors, keep fit and have fun.
Everyone met at the cemetery in Whitwick to remember Thomas Elsdon Ashford. He was a private in The Royal Fusiliers, British Army during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry during a sortie from Kandahar, on the 16th August, 1880. He helped rescue and carry Private Massey for a distance of over 200 yards, under the fire of the enemy. He was assisted by Lieutenant William St. Lucien Chase. Private Massey had taken shelter in a blockhouse. Several times they were compelled to rest, but they persevered in bringing him to a place of safety.
North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has been able to install the new items to the Coalville Forest Adventure Park thanks to support from Aggregate Industries and their Bardon Hill Quarry Community Fund Scheme.
After his military service, Ashford settled in Thringstone, Leicestershire and served as a postman for many years. He was married in Thringstone Church to Betsy Ann Sisson on 29 January 1891. He later moved to the neighbouring village of Whitwick and died on 13 February 1913. He was laid to rest in Whitwick Cemetery, in the presence of thousands of mourners, though the grave lay unmarked for many years, until a monument was provided by the local British Legion. His VC is in the Royal Fusiliers Museum at the Tower of London. The air cadets, school children and veterans then moved to the graveside of William Dolman Bees who is buried in the cemetery on London Rd in Coalville. He was a private in the 1st Battalion, The Derbyshire Regiment (later The Sherwood Foresters), during the Second Boer War. It was on 30 September 1901 at Moedwil, South Africa that he was awarded the VC. Private Bees was one of the Maxim-gun detachment, at Moedwil, six men out of nine had been hit. Hearing his wounded comrades asking for water, he went forward, under a heavy fire, to a spruit held by Boers about 500 yards ahead of the gun, and brought back a kettle full of water. In going and returning he had to pass within 100 yards of some rocks also held by Boers, and the kettle which he was carrying was hit by several bullets. His VC is in the Sherwood Foresters Museum in Nottingham. The pupils of St Clare’s Primary School sang “I vow to thee thy country” at both Whitwick and Coalville Cemeteries to honour the fallen soldiers. The cadets and veterans then made their way to the clock tower for the launch of this year's poppy appeal and the unveiling of a new sculpture to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One. The sculpture was created by Graeme Mitcheson, it features four people who contributed to the war effort locally.
The fund contributed £9,800 towards the new agility-based equipment which is designed to encourage physical activity in a fun and challenging way perfect for keeping youngsters fit. The new pieces of equipment are a log traverse, balance weaver, jigsaw wall, wobble board with stepping blocks and a clatter bridge. The new play equipment is part of an ongoing improvement programme for the park. In the coming months NWLDC will be installing new picnic benches, willow tunnels, signage and interpretation panels as well as planting additional trees, bulbs and wildflowers. There are also plans to include new woodland trail paths, bird boxes and other wildlife encouraging features.
Flt Lt Rebekah Harrison-Page RAF VR(T), the commanding officer of 1188 Coalville Squadron said “I am really pleased the cadets were able to join with the members of the Royal British Legion again this year to remember those who have gone before. The weather was bitterly cold but the cadets did the squadron proud."
Through its commitment to supporting the local community, Aggregate Industries, which has its headquarters in Bardon Hill, is currently donating £40,000 every year to applicable local projects such as community centres, voluntary groups, charities and any other community-centric initiatives.
Mr John Cowley, the branch chair for the Whitwick British Legion said, "It was one of the best events. It was wonderful to have the school children there and sing a hymn at the graveside."
The Coalville Forest Adventure Park can be found off Linden Way in Coalville.

4 Reasons Why Winter Weddings Are the Best By Timmy @PartySaveSmile.co.uk Hi Guys, Timmy from www.partysavesmile.co.uk again.
** UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT **
COALVILLE AQUATICS SUPPLIES
I hate to say it, but Winter is fast approaching, don’t worry, there is plenty to look forward to - such as a Winter Wedding! Winter weddings are becoming increasingly popular with engaged couples, who are opting to swap sunshine and flowers, for mulled wine, balloons and log fires. Why are winter weddings becoming the done thing? And what essentials do you need to pull off the perfect snowy soiree? You can be less traditional with colour Unlike the summer months, which traditionally lend themselves to pastels and lighter shades, any colour palette can work for you in the winter. Whether you want to bring in rich reds or bold blacks, you have the opportunity to inject personality into your colour scheme, especially as darker colours are perfectly suited to the colder weather.

2A North Avenue, Coalville, LE67 3QX Your evening do transition is easier Winter weddings have great natural lighting, and once the sun sets you can capture a stunning romantic backdrop for your photographs. As weddings can sometimes feel like a long day for those invited to the full event, the shorter days in winter mean that the tradition from dazzling daytime to cosy night-time is smooth, quick and effortless. You have better food options Winter means two words: comfort food. Forget the summer salads, choosing a winter wedding means you can opt for hearty dishes like casseroles, soups and pastas. The spices and flavours that come with a traditional winter menu, allow you to be more playful with your food choices, which is not only lots of fun to plan, but also relaxing and comforting for your guests. The ambience can be more romantic There’s something truly magical about the beauty of a bride in a wintery setting. Whether it’s the delicate lighting, rich colour palettes or warm textures, a traditional bride is illuminated next to the darker tones. Winter weddings lend themselves perfectly to couples who share a love for comfort food, rustic decor and atmospheric, misty weather.

Pounds Shed For Dream Wed A slimmer who transformed his life by losing four stone is using his success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Richard King joined his local Slimming World group in Ashby De La Zouch 27 months ago and dropped from 15 stone to 11 stone in eleven months. Now, he has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Members at the group are getting ready to welcome Richard as their new Consultant when he takes over the group on Tuesday 30th October 2018.
Whitwick & District U3A The next General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be held on Friday 16th November when the guest speaker will be Dr John Sutton with the topic “The Commonwealth War Graves Commission”. To mark the centenary of the end of WWI, this talk by Dr Sutton, a keen amateur historian for many years, will chart the origins and early years of the Imperial (now Commonwealth) War Graves Commission. He will examine the work of the founders; the design and construction of the battlefield cemeteries and memorials and the harrowing clearances of the battlefields after the Armistice of November 1918. Whitwick and District U3A is a thriving and friendly group with a wide variety of Interest Groups. The U3A is a self-help organisation for retired people where learning and social activities can be enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere. The General Meeting provides an ideal opportunity to chat to existing members and see the options available. With a membership of over 320 local people willing to share interests and hobbies, there is something for everyone. As the U3A is non-political and nonreligious, all are welcome. To find out more, please visit www. whitwicku3a.org.uk. The General Meetings are held at St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL; please come along at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start.
He says: When I first joined Slimming World as a member weighing 15 stone, low in confidence and not in the best of health I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight, but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 4st and completing my training, I feel I can truly engage with people and share my experience, passion and insight, so that I can give all my members the support they need to get to target. Walking into group for the first time and getting on the scales, it felt like I had a mountain to climb, but my consultant reassured me that food optimising would make a difference and when it came to the next weigh in I had lost 2 and a half pounds. All I’d done was followed the Slimming World plan and adapted my eating habits and it was working. I began to eat recipes made from scratch with natural ingredients and realised that I didn’t have to restrict myself to eating salads and fresh air. In fact I was eating more food than I had before, but it was the right foods and I was eating to satisfy my appetite and not just for the sake of eating. After a year of losing weight and feeling more confident than I had in years, I proposed to my long term girlfriend Tara. We had been together five years and had become content and happy, at least with each other, but not so much with ourselves. So with our new lease of life achieved through losing weight together we began to plan our dream wedding. We had talked about getting married before, but somehow with our confidence sky high and our love for each other stronger than ever, now was the right time and we were going to have the best wedding by the sea and feel like film stars.
So thanks to Slimming World with our consultant Richard Greene and the group supporting us all the way, we really did make it possible and I for one know I will be giving the exact same support and encouragement to every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight. We will be setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrating the successes that I know can and will be achieved. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun. I can’t stress enough just how different the Slimming World way of food optimising is to other lifestyle diets. In fact I personally don’t refer to it as a diet plan because to me that just makes it sound like a temporary fad that you’ll try for a while then give up and move on to something else. This eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. For example on my wedding day I made the decision not to be on plan so I could have the more calorific foods on offer, but with my new understanding of how to make better choices I knew I could be on plan other days of the week to balance it out. Another important aspect of Slimming World is becoming more active. For those of us like myself that aren’t interested in the Gym there are other great ways to keep fit and active. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise. Everything counts from walking to gardening to washing the car. I love walking to get my Body Magic! As a Consultant it’s my role to create that warm, supportive atmosphere to get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others - it’s going to be great fun!”
For me this highlighted just how important the support from the group and my consultant had been in helping me to achieve my weight loss target.
Like Richard, Slimming World Consultants are all former members who have lost weight at their local group themselves and groups are set up as micro businesses in the heart of local communities. There are currently around 4,000 Slimming World Consultants across the UK and Ireland running 15,000 groups. Consultants receive training in Slimming World’s healthy eating and physical activity programs and learn how to use the power of group support to empower members to take control of their own weight loss journey.
When it came to buying a suit for my wedding I wanted to find one that fitted perfectly, one that would complement my slimmer physique and make me feel amazing. I’d dropped from a size 36 to a 32 waist and could even fit into my son’s small t-shirts. I never thought I’d be wearing his hand me downs and no longer would I need to buy oversized clothes to try and hide my extra pounds, those days are gone for good thanks to Slimming World.
As self-employed micro-entrepreneurs, Consultants also learn how to build a successful communitybased business. Richard says he can’t wait for the new challenges running his own business will bring. “For me becoming a self-employed franchisee was a great option. I wanted a job that was well paid, flexible and could fit around my busy family life, so launching my own Slimming World group was an ideal option – I feel like I’ve got a brand new career and I can’t wait for my new groups to run now!"
The wedding day came and it was perfect, and sure enough I felt incredible and Tara took my breath away when she appeared before me looking like a princess in her wedding dress.
Richard Greene, who runs Slimming World’s Ashby group and manages Richard as a Team Developer, says: “Slimming World Consultants are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. With Richard’s experience of being a successful Slimming World member and his kind and warm personality and great sense of humour I just know that he’ll be an amazing support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight.”
When we made our announcement in group everyone was so happy for us and the love and support from everyone was overwhelming. The majority of the group had been on our slimming journey with us throughout the weeks and had witnessed our highs and lows.
‘Don’t we scrub up well’ she said almost surprised that we had achieved something she thought was impossible, and I guess it probably seemed that way before we made our commitment to losing weight and getting healthier.

County Cllr Michael Wyatt M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk
Coalville To Get It’s Own Fun Fair Soon Cllr Michael Wyatt has been pushing hard for a number of years for a fun fair in Coalville like the annual event in Ashby.
SAFE • EFFICIENT • PROFESSIONAL
Cllr Wyatt said, “I am delighted to announce that the council as agreed to pay for a report which identifies and puts in place health and safety requirements for a fun fair so it can become a regular event in our Town Centre. The last fun fair which was situated in the Council car park last May was a huge success and provided a great weekend for all ages. The council needs to start allowing more events in our town which caters for everyone. If we are going to help regenerate and revitalise our town then more events must be provided which will help to attract more people into Coalville.” Marlborough Square Development Hold Up, Incompetency Or Deliberate? Cllr Michael Wyatt has told the County Highways to get a grip and sack who ever failed to make sure the a full assessment concerning works at the site were correct. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “It’s outrageous that yet again Coalville is being subjected to gross incompetence and failed leadership. Nearly all the projects to help regenerate our town have either failed to come to fruition or put on hold due to someone not doing their job right. It really does make me think that the current Councillors in charge are deliberately sabotaging the redevelopment or they are grossly incompetent. I know Coalville can be a thriving town again but until we finally have elected Councillors who

MP Andrew Bridgen
M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk HS2 have recently announced they will be undertaking an Environmental consultation into phase 2 of the proposed route which runs through North West Leicestershire A number of commentators are now waking up to the fallacy of the HS2 as its costs continue to spiral out of control. When I suggested 5 years ago that the true cost of HS2 was likely to be £100bn, I was laughed at and informed that this was ridiculous by the promoters of project. It’s looking increasingly likely that a total cost of £100bn is ridiculous and it will actually be a lot more like £200bn. This is a project that has escaped effective Government scrutiny and become a hallmark of profligacy and waste. A quarter of the 1,346 staff have been revealed as being paid more than £100,000 a year, with 15 employees on more than £250,000. Its chief executive earns more for overseeing the building of one railway line than Railtrack pay its Chief Executive to run the entire network. In spite of this, all the evidence points to an over budget and badly run project. Indeed it is telling that the private sector will not countenance the idea of investing in HS2. It is no wonder that Michael Byng, a surveyor who devised the method used by Network Rail to cost its projects, said recently that ‘he believed phase one would use up the entire budget for HS2 and would not be ready until about 2031, five years late’ This followed a whistle blower from HS2 suggesting the cost of buying land would be around £1.9bn more than previously estimated. We are told that this new unnecessary train line from near London to near Birmingham calling at no stations will benefit the whole Country, however two thirds of those questioned in a recent Com Res survey (67 percent) did not think HS2 would benefit them personally at all with 85 percent believing the Government should spend a planned £99 billion rail improvement fund on improving capacity on the existing network. I would much rather see local projects such as the Ivanhoe Line opened up and I believe the public would as well. It is estimated that £12 billion is due to be spent on HS2 over the next 3 years, following the £4 billion already spent. If there is a time to stop this white elephant project, then it has to be now. I have been getting a few e-mails regarding a second EU Referendum which has been rebadged as a ‘peoples vote’. Let me be clear that there will not be another vote and the UK is leaving the EU next year. I believe that when a decision of constitutional significance is made, it is important that democratic processes are followed. That is why Parliament gave the British people the final say on the UK's membership of the EU and why the result must be respected. The ballot paper presented voters with an unambiguous choice to remain in the EU or to leave. The consequences of either decision were communicated by campaign groups through a variety of print, audio-visual and digital media. The Government also sent a document to every household in the UK on the claimed benefits of staying in the EU. As in every election, it was up to the electorate to judge the merits of the different arguments and over 17.4 million voters decided to leave the EU with early 35000 of you in NW Leics being part of this number on an 80% turnout. Should the result not be respected and delivered it will undermine public confidence in our democratic system and reduce the legitimacy of any simple majority vote for ever. This is something I will not stand idely by and allow to happen.

County Cllr Dr Terri Enynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk
With a glorious summer behind us, some folk are already wondering how they will cope with a winter of treacherous pavements and slippery streets. If you and your neighbours decided that a grit bin at the end of your street would help, who would you ask? Getting A Grit Bin Logic would tell you to ring the County Council. Their Environment and Transport department are responsible for gritting the roads and topping up the grit bins. But you would be wrong. It is up to your Parish or Town Council to request a grit bin. They will go to the County on your behalf. Which makes sense as the Parish needs to find the volunteers to look after the bin and spread the grit. Or it would make sense if you had a Parish or Town Council. Which most of Coalville North doesn’t. I have two Parishes in my patch. Hugglescote and Donington le Heath Parish Council looks after the Hugglescote St Mary’s Ward. Ravenstone with Snibston Parish Council care for the Limes estate. The rest of Coalville is unparished but you still pay a precept of £49.41 added to your Council Tax Bill for a band B property. The ‘Special Expenses’ committee of the

District Council decides how to spend this part of your rates. But a ‘Special Expenses’ committee doesn’t directly arrange grit bins or recruit snow wardens. You need to ask your District Councillor. Calling The Wrong Council Complicated isn’t it? No wonder over 140 000 people called the ‘wrong’

Council last year. Surely, with so much waste and frustration it can’t be the residents in the wrong. It has to be the system. So I am glad that Leicestershire County Council has started a conversation. We need to think about how local government could work in Leicestershire. How can we make the system more straight forward? Could we get the District Planners and the County Highways teams into one
Could County Trading Standards and District Environmental Health be brought together into one team to make sure that all our food outlets are selling what it says on the packet? What about joining up the District Leisure services and County Public Health team so that the money invested in getting people to exercise is spent on those at most risk of becoming ill and costing the NHS? Who Cares For Coalville? There are lots of possible benefits to joining our Councils up into one Unitary Authority. There are also risks. Should a Councillor from Melton or Harborough be allowed to decide where houses are built in Hugglescote? Would they really
