Kaye’s Bike Ride Drums Up Support For Charity A sponsored bike ride on one of the hottest days of the year saw an Ashby woman raise £250 for a charity which helps breast cancer survivors get back to fitness. Kaye Gillanders took part in the Cycle Live Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride, cycling 50 miles in sweltering temperatures last weekend (Saturday, June 23). The 54-year-old, who is secretary and treasurer of Ashby African Drummers, donated the money to Supporting Confidence Through Exercise. The north west Leicestershire-based charity runs In the Pink, a free eight-week rehabilitation programme open to patients who have undergone treatment for breast cancer. Kaye said: “The ride was very tough – it was hot and there were more hills than I’d realised. But knowing that I was doing it for a good cause kept me motivated and helped me keep going. I heard about In the Pink when they asked if the African drumming group would do a workshop for them – drumming is good fun and uses muscle groups that help with flexibility after breast cancer. I went along and met a former work colleague who had been through treatment. Talking to her touched my heart - and she really threw herself into the drumming - so I wanted to put something back into the charity.” Kaye, a receptionist for Ashfield Healthcare in Ashby, was delighted when the company offered to sponsor her to take part in the event through its Ashfield Cares fundraising team. Her efforts are even more remarkable as she was diagnosed with arthritis a few years ago, and started cycling to help her manage the pain. She also had foot surgery last year and has only been able to walk properly in the last six months. “My friend Dave, who joined me on this ride, has already started talking about doing the Coast to Coast bike ride next year. I’m saying a definite ‘no!’ at the moment but never say never!” Lynne Showell, chair of SCTE, said: “We are really grateful for Kaye’s efforts – especially as she has had her own health problems – and to her employer, Ashfield Healthcare. The money she has raised will help us continue to offer In the Pink free of charge, and to make sure more survivors of breast cancer regain their fitness after treatment and start to live their lives fully again.”

‘Supporting Another’s Success Won’t Ever Dampen Yours’ (Author Unknown) If you already are or aspire to be a writer whether published or not, you will almost certainly benefit from belonging to a supportive writer’s group. Writers who meet regularly can share information, advice and ideas to benefit each other. We all need motivation and inspiration at times and the opportunity to spend time with others who know the joys and struggles of writing comes highly recommended. If you like the sound of this and want to see if a writer’s group could work for you then come along to our first meeting. It will be at The Birch Tree, Bardon Hill, LE67 1TD on Tuesday 4th September starting at 7pm. We have a private room booked. If you want to chat first or ask questions please get in touch with me, Fliss Middleton or just turn up on the night. flissm52@yahoo.com or 07812160220.

Flyposting Warning After Business Owner Fined £150 People are being warned they could be fined up to £150 for putting posters and banners up on lampposts, railings and other street furniture in North West Leicestershire.

Whitwick & District Celebrating Our First Ten Years! During August, Whitwick and District U3A is celebrating a special anniversary. It is ten years since our U3A was set up by a group of people from Whitwick and the surrounding area. To mark this achievement, we will be holding an Open Morning to show what the U3A is all about and how it has grown since 2008. The motto of the U3A is “Learn, Laugh and Live!” and this is endorsed completely by the Whitwick and District group. The U3A is for those people who are no longer in full-time work or raising a family. By helping each other to pursue interests, keep active and make new friends, the group is thriving with a steady membership of 300 local people. The Open Morning on Friday 17th August will include displays by most of the Interest Groups which have been set up by members. This will be an opportunity for visitors and existing members to discover the wide variety of activities available and how they are organised. Light refreshments will be served and the U3A Fun Choir will provide musical entertainment. It promises to be a very pleasant, positive and friendly occasion. The event will run from 10.30 am until 12.30 pm at St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL. By kind permission of Broom Leys School, parking is available at the school. If you are retired or approaching retirement, do call in to see us. All the research shows that keeping active, physically or mentally, is beneficial to well-being. Whitwick and District U3A has much to offer and you may be pleasantly surprised to find so much to do in your own area. Through self-help we can ensure that the next ten years are just as successful.

The warning comes after North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Enforcement Officers issued a fixed penalty notice for £150 to a company that ignored warnings and continued to advertise illegally on street furniture.

Inspection Confirms Extent Of Damage To Coalville’s Clock Tower Coalville’s Memorial Clock Tower will get a new roof and new internal steel supports, a detailed inspection has confirmed. Restoration work to the Grade II listed clock tower began in June, funded in part by National Lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund and War Memorials Trust. Scaffold covering the whole height of the 21 metre memorial tower has allowed contractors working on behalf of North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) to carry out intricate hammer testing on the tower’s stonework and up close inspections of the steel and timber used in the structure. The inspection showed that the stone and brickwork is in a good condition, with only small areas that need to be repointed. It also confirmed that the roof will need to be replaced entirely. Leaks through the roof have damaged the internal timbers and steelwork, which will all be replaced. The steel lintels above the high level windows are also corroded, which has damaged some of the brickwork around the windows. The lintels and any damaged bricks will be replaced. Having planned for this level of restoration, the project to restore the clock tower is on schedule and budget, and is due to be completed by October 2018, with no disruption on Remembrance commemoration events marking the centenary of the end of WW1. The total cost of the repair work is £116,000. A National Lottery grant of £60,000 has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which is contributing towards the repair work and an educational outreach programme. The memorial tower is also benefitting from a grant of £30,000 from the Grants for War Memorials scheme supported by the First World War Memorials Programme and Historic England. The remaining funding is provided by NWLDC. Anyone who would like to learn more about the history of the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower and the surrounding area can find information and historic pictures around the base of the tower in Memorial Square, Coalville while the work is ongoing. All information and images have been kindly provided by the Coalville Heritage Society. For more information about the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower Project, visit www.choosecoalville.co.uk Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “The Memorial Clock Tower is incredibly important to local people, having stood in the centre of the town since 1925. How appropriate it is that we’re doing this work in 2018 as we move towards the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War in November 2018. The restoration work won’t make the tower seem much different from the street, but there’s a lot of work going on inside to protect it for future generations to know and love.”

Officers have taken down more than 100 illegal advertising signs that were attached to road signs and lampposts in the last two months alone. Flyposting is the act of attaching advertising posters, stickers, signs and flyers on street furniture without the permission of the property owner. Why is flyposting illegal?

• The posters look terrible once they start to rot in poor weather • They give a business an unfair advantage over others that don’t illegally flypost • They can look messy and untidy and damage people’s perception of an area • Flyposting by the roadside can distract drivers or obscure important road signage • People often don’t take down their advertisement after it expires.

Anyone caught flyposting can be handed a fixed penalty of £150 or prosecuted in court. Examples of flyposting vary but include: • Advertising jumble sales • Business adverts • Adverts for social and musical events Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said “Flyposting is an offence that might seem harmless, but if allowed to happen unchecked it results in towns and villages covered in posters which make them look untidy and unwelcoming. We don’t want to fine people but we are concerned that many people don’t even realise they are committing an offence when they flypost. Please take pride in our communities and look after them by advertising through legitimate channels and not flyposting.” For more information on flyposting or to report an incident go to www.nwleics.gov.uk

5 Ways To Use Balloons At Your Party By Timmy @PartySaveSmile.co.uk Hi everybody, Timmy here, This Summer we have been blown away – with requests for inflated Balloons. It seems you guys love a party in the hot weather! Balloons can make any occasion super special, and add the finishing touch. The right Balloons play a big part in decorating your venue perfectly. I thought I would share 5 ways you could use balloons to great effect at your party.

Join Appleby Magna Food Gusto This Bank Holiday Weekend Looking for great taste, enjoy food and drink with provenance, want to meet the producers, then why not come to the Appleby Magna Food & Drink festival on the Bank Holiday weekend. Food Gusto have planned an amazing day of local and regional food and drink as well as entertainment in the beautiful surrounding of the Sir John Moore Foundation just off Jun 12 M42. Local exhibitors include the famous Brockley’s pies, Tori and Ben’s mouthwatering local beef, Leicestershire handmade cheese, Hill Farm Packington venison and bison, as well as local craft beers. Visitors will be entertained by a great line-up of music organised by David Gray and friends.

1) Balloon Bouquets: Put a few Balloons together to make a Balloon bouquet. Matching the right Balloons together and co-ordinating them perfectly lets you make the perfect statement. Balloon bouquets are visually stunning and are a great way to celebrate something special! They also make a great Table Centrepiece! 2) Bubble Balloons: Bubble Balloons offer a unique statement for your celebration. Whether they are filled with Confetti, Feathers or even more Balloons. One thing is for sure a Bubble balloon will give your party the wow factor. 3) Balloons as Candles: You can even add a Balloon as a Cake Topper or instead of candles. In fact they look great on any sweet treat such as doughnuts and cupcakes. 4) Balloon Phrases: Spell out your message in style by creating a Banner out of Balloons. Whether you need words or numbers, make your message extra personal by making it out of our range of coloured letter and numbers. 5) Traditional Foil Balloons: Whilst not the most creative use of Balloons sometimes simplicity is best. A simple on theme messaged 18” with colour co-ordinated ribbon and weight is perfect for the occasion. Choose your theme and design, and we will co-ordinate this with the perfect weight and ribbon colour to complement your balloon. So if you are planning a party and need some balloons, why not come and visit our Coalville Showroom – we are open to the public and have free parking available on site. We inflate balloons on site to order and we even offer same day Click and Collect to save you waiting. We stock 1,000s of different Balloons, Party Supplies, Decorations and Gifts for any occasion including Childrens, Licenced Character, Wedding, Anniversary and Baby Shower. A Rubbish Idea

On Wednesdays I feel sorry for the people of Choyce Close. A new cul-de-sac off Forest Road, it is just outside my patch. Tucked away, down a narrow lane that winds east and then south, the houses stretch downhill to fill the land behind what used to be Forest Road Surgery. Early Wednesday morning, at the junction of Choyce Close and Forest Road, a jumble of bins and boxes appears on the grass. These have been dragged up the hill and along the narrow lane to the edge of the property, as defined by the District Council waste collection department. Unpleasant enough in summer, this job is a real pain in winter, when the bags and bins blow about in the wind and rain. It doesn’t exactly please the residents in my division whose neat little front gardens look out on this mess. Why is this happening? Surely ‘The Council’ should do something about it? Surely ‘The Council’ should have prevented this situation? I couldn’t agree more, except for one thing. There is no one Council responsible for creating (or resolving) this situation. There are three. There is a Parish, a District and a County Council. Oh, yes, and a developer of course. And a Government whose National Planning Policy Framework has been described by all and sundry as a ‘developer’s charter’, allowing all sorts of poor decisions. I have tried to find out why the access to Choyce Close is so narrow. Even when the houses were being built, construction vehicles were forever getting stuck. It is not as if there wasn’t enough land. There is a wide strip of grass to one side of the lane, which someone will have to maintain. The developer has now asked to have double yellow lines put down both sides of the access. The lane is currently not up to standard, so it hasn’t been adopted by Highways. If it is adopted the yellow lines can be put down and District Council bin lorries may be prepared to visit the houses. Until then, the residents must carry their rubbish up the hill.

Who Allowed This Decision?

Highways tell me that they are only a statutory consultee. It is up to the Planning Authority, the District Council, to enforce their advice. The District Council tell me that Highways said this access would be good enough. The Parish Council, who have no powers to enforce anything in planning, didn’t agree. The Parish Chair, Cllr Russell Johnson, tried to get the other two Councils to listen. The developer didn’t have to take any notice, so he didn’t. Do we need three Councils bickering over Planning decisions, leaving residents to live with the consequences? Would a Unitary Authority be better? The idea of reorganising our three-tier system has come from Cllr Nick Rushton, but all the Councils in Leicestershire are going to have to think about this. North West Leicestershire’s Chief Executive, Bev Smith, has produced an excellent summary of the issues. You can find it in the Cabinet papers for the 24th July. Whilst the County Labour Group are supportive of Unitary Status, as a principle of good governance, we will not support any particular model until we have assessed the evidence. Labour will need to be convinced that the benefits for Leicestershire communities outweigh the risks of reorganisation. Meanwhile, the Choyce Close developer wants to add ten more houses to his estate, extending the cul-de-sac down to Peggs Grange. Would you want to wheel a bin that far?

Prestigious Gold Award Win For Weight Loss Consultant A weight-loss expert from Coalville has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 240 people in the area to lose weight every week. Sharon, who runs the Coalville and Whitwick Slimming World groups every week, was presented with a prestigious Gold Award at the organisation’s annual national awards ceremony in Birmingham because of her exceptional success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight. In October Sharon became one of Slimming World’s high-flying Gold Consultants for the second time. The accolade is awarded in recognition of achieving the highest levels of support for slimmers, with Sharon giving expert advice to help the people of Coalville reach their weightloss goals week after week. Sharon was one of a group of just 40 of the organisations 5,000 Slimming World Consultants to ‘go Gold’ this year, making Coalville home to some of the most exceptional support in the UK. Sharon says: “I’m delighted to have received this Gold Award again, this time for my Coalville group, having achieved it in my Whitwick group in 2015. I truly love my job and I feel so passionate about helping people to change their lives by losing weight. Seeing them achieve their dreams is so rewarding and being given this recognition really is the icing on the cake. “I’ve worked really hard to make sure that members who join my group get the highest level of service and the weight-loss success they deserve. It’s great to be able to tell people in North West Leicester that they have one of the best Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland on their doorstep. “It’s not just a triumph for me but also for the 120 members in the Coalville group. They’re the ones who make it the success it is, with their fabulous energy, the warm welcome they give to new members and the wonderful compassionate support they show to each other every week. That’s as well as their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s hunger-busting Food Optimising eating plan and getting more active, of course. They’ve lost an amazing 231st 13.5lb since January, and each week as members lose weight I see them growing in confidence. I see them changing their health, becoming more active, trying out new foods and recipes, and finding the courage to take on challenges that they’ve always dreamed of. Members who arrive at group with their selfesteem at rock bottom start to hold their heads high and stand tall as they lose weight successfully and share their experiences and success with the rest of the group. It was an honour to collect this award on stage in Birmingham – I just wish I could have taken all of my members with me!” Like all Slimming World Consultants, Sharon lost weight at a group herself and so knows just how valuable group support can be. Consultants receive in-depth training from the Slimming World Academy to help give their members the support they need to make long-term changes to their eating and activity habits. To join the Coalville group, which is held every Thursday at 5.30 and 7.15pm at The Marlene Reid Centre, or the Whitwick group, which is held every Monday at 5.30 and 7.30pm at Hall Lane Methodist Church, by Tressall Road, either pop along or give Sharon a call on 07855 250017.

Michael Wyatt

Red House Could Be Demolished Under New Plans A planning application submitted to the District Council could see the demolition of the red house in coalville which is one of the very few oldest buildings left in the Town Centre. Liberal Democrat Councillor and local businessman Michael Wyatt said, “I’m really disappointed to see any application that will see the demolition of this building just to make way for a modern and probably cheap convenience store that’s going to be in the heart of our Town. I will certainly be asking questions to why the existing building cannot be utilised in some sort of way to keep some of the main features of the current building. Other former public houses like the one in Ellistown which was converted recently and managed to keep some of its original features. The Council need to be very careful when making a decision about this site because any new store which provides products which is already available on the High Street could potentially lead to further closures which is clearly not what is needed. Any development must help to regenerate the High Street not set it back even more than at present.”

Local Business Owners Welcome New Store On High Street In Coalville A brand new discount store opened on the High Street recently which

was welcomed by local businesses who are working hard to improve the local area.

Ryan Flamson local entrepreneur said, “It’s great to see someone having the confidence to invest their money in our Town. Small

businesses are the beating heart of our town and to add this to the already many shops is great.”

Michael Wyatt owner of the Bitter and Twisted also pictured welcoming the new store to the street said, “It’s brilliant to see yet another store

added to the High Street. The former Geoff Toys shop was a very large empty shop which is now providing a great range of products. We are delighted to welcome Tarsem to the High Street.”

Jaqueline Beresford from Lady J Lingerie said, “It’s really good to see

another shop re-opening on the High Street. I really do hope people will

come and support Tarsem who’s invested in our Town. He could of easily gone else where but no he like many local business people believe in Coalville as a viable future.”

Thringstone Primary School Receives Spirit Of The Games Award Thringstone Primary School is proud to have been presented with the Spirit of the Games Award by the North West Leicestershire School Sports Partnership (NWLSSP) for the 2017/18 academic year. The Spirit of the Games Award is given to the team or school that best demonstrates the School Games Values at each primary school competition, which are determination, passion, respect, honesty, selfbelief and teamwork. Thringstone Primary School places emphasis not only on the academic achievements of the school, but on their pupils’ values and attitudes, so the award has been greatly received by staff and Governors. There has been a focus on the Route to Resilience programme in the school this year, which centres on pupils’ character, values and growth, therefore developing the emotional wellbeing and resilience of young people. Within the sports competitions, participants learn how to handle wins and losses, believe in their abilities, respect their opponents and work as a team. And because the school weaves conversation about personal values and conduct into everyday learning at Thringstone, pupils have shone in the School Games this year. Competitive school sport is a rich learning experience for all children, as it develops them to not only the best sportsperson they can be but the best person as well. The school gives all pupils the opportunity to take part in the events throughout the year, so not only do they all get to experience different sports and games, but they also all mix with teams from different schools in the area. Headteacher Ella Roberts said, “We are thrilled to be presented with the Spirit of the Games Award and delighted that the pupils at Thringstone have been recognised for the key character values they consistently demonstrate at the many sporting events we take part in. Yes our pupils love winning, but they also understand that values and attitudes are important and these qualities will serve them well in the future”.

Member Of Parliament

Andrew Bridgen

M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk Since my last column, you may have seen my comments in the media regarding the so called “Chequers proposal” and our negotiating position with the EU. In short, I felt it to be a capitulation and nothing short of a betrayal of the 17.4 million people who voted to leave the EU. So strong are my feelings that I have handed in a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minster. The proposed deal is a huge mistake. What Theresa May unveiled after Chequers appears little short of a punishment Brexit, designed by the EU to dissuade any other country from leaving the bloc. With no incentive to offer non-EU countries free trade deals when we leave, through mutual recognition of standards, the UK will forever remain a captive market for overpriced EU goods. It means going through the pretence of leaving but, becoming a non-voting associate member, effectively a vassal state. We would still be locked into the EU’s suffocating embrace via this ‘common rule book’ while the dead hand of the European Court of Justice will remain lurking in the background. The EU have been making much of the Irish border in their attempts to delay progress in the negotiation. I believe it is ridiculous of the European Union to suggest a solution where they have effectively annexed a part of the United Kingdom away from the mainland. Can you imagine if we said our solution to the Irish border, a “problem” which actually doesn’t exist, would be for the Republic of Ireland to leave the European Union and be with us – whether they wanted to or not? I mean, this is how ridiculous the EU’s solution is for Northern Ireland. It isn’t actually a problem and the senior customs officers in the Republic and in Northern Ireland had already said before this became a political football that the solution could be solved easily with existing technology with is already in place. In contrast, we should call Brussels’ bluff and, if necessary, leave without a formal deal. A so-called ‘no deal’ scenario may sound scary but ‘no deal’ does not actually mean no deal. It simply means the UK would trade on WTO terms which we use already to trade with most of the world. There is no cliff edge. Planes will fly despite the ludicrous statements made by the Irish Prime Minister acting as a puppet for Brussels .Lorries will move through ports the day after we leave just as they did the day before. We will carry on trading and travelling, investing and being tourists in each other’s countries, as we do today in numerous non EU countries. We would not be obliged to pay the £39 billion divorce Bill and the EU will find that people, companies and global rules will work just fine. The EU sells far more to us than we buy from them and exporters to the UK will make sure they can still sell to us as they sell to other countries not in the EU. There is nothing disorderly about the way EU states trade with non EU states. All of this should not be necessary if the EU take a proactive and positive approach to negotiations instead of acting like some sort of mafia organisations determined to punish those who seek to disobey or dissent. We are a great nation with huge global advantages and a strong economy. The very idea that we cannot survive outside a bureaucratic unelected corrupt organisation is extraordinary and I will be doing all I can to see that Brexit does mean the Brexit the British people voted for.

104th Ashby Show Sunday 15th July saw the 104th Ashby Show take place at Cattows Farm in Heather and what a fabulous day it was! The long summer sun continued and brought in thousands of visitors through the entrance gate. The grounds were full of gleaming farming equipment both old and new and cattle and sheep were preened to perfection in the livestock field. The Imps Motorcycle Display Team wowed the crowd as they watched the young children show their discipline and skill with cross-overs, fire jumps and stunning pyramids. There many varied trade stands selling everything from lawnmowers to jewellery covering the show ground Lord Ralph Kerr, from Melbourne Hall, Show President for 2018 said, “Ashby Show provides a great opportunity for the farming community to communicate with the general public. Whilst it is essential to keep the emphasis on agriculture, this is a diverse show nowadays with entertainment and shopping to suit everybody’s tastes.” Butchery demonstrations took place again outside the British Farm Produce marquee, with Mat Gothard and Brady Bowman showing how to butcher a side of local beef and lamb carcasses into various cuts and a sausage making demonstration which gave volunteers the chance to have a go. The Giant Tortoises on the Village Green were very popular again giving visitors the chance to get up close to these amazing creatures. A modern machinery display and the Accumulator Show Jumping class provided extra main ring entertainment and away from the main ring, the Sheep Show proved hugely popular again as the Kiwi presenter provided tongue in cheek humour and had sizeable crowds in absolute awe and fits of giggles. Eight Horse of the Year Show qualifiers, further cemented the ever growing reputation of this prestigious local event. As the Ashby Show evolves, it is growing into one of the best one day agricultural shows in the UK at present, and long may it continue.
