Coalville Newmarket Plans Receive Approval
Distribution
A former pub in Coalville will be transformed into a new, modern indoor market after planning permission was granted. The former Litten Tree pub in Marlborough Square will be become a market hall, with traditional market stalls and food vendors, as well as flexible space for entertainment and events. Planning permission for the building use to be changed was granted by North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Planning Committee on Tuesday 3 December. The district council has contractors lined up to start the work to transform the building early in the New Year. The new market will open in the spring. The front entrance of the market, which will be named Newmarket to reflect the historic name of the square, will be reconfigured to return some of the heritage features of the building. With extra glazing and a reinstated half-moon window above the door, the new front will be a welcome change from the currently empty and derelict pub building. Four food vendors and a shared seating area will be located at the front of the market hall, and traditional market stalls selling a range of wares will complete the venue. Stallholders from the current indoor market have been offered space within the Newmarket or on the outdoor market in the redesigned Marlborough Square once this is complete. Others are being supported to move into alternative premises in the town centre. The plans are the latest step in NWLDC’s work to regenerate Coalville town centre, with other schemes including a redesign of Marlborough Square, a frontage grant scheme for businesses and a wide-ranging events programme. Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services at NWLDC, said: “This is great news for Coalville and we’re very excited for work to get under way on site in January. Newmarket is an important part of our regeneration plans for the Coalville and helps us to move away from the failing market building we currently have in the wrong part of the town. We continue to work with the market traders who are coming with on this journey and offer our support to those moving their businesses into other town centre premises. I’d urge shoppers to continue to support all our traders in the current market hall while building work progresses at Newmarket.” These are the details of all the decisions made at the planning committee meeting:

Free WiFi Now Available In Ashby And Coalville Town Centres Article by NW Leicestershire District Council
Shoppers and visitors in Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch are now able to access free WiFi. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has invested in the WiFi, which is proven to bring benefits to businesses and improve the shopping, recreational and tourist experience of those that visit towns, increasing footfall in the process. Users can log on to WiFi in both town centres by accessing the ‘NWLeicsFreeWiFi’ network from their mobile devices. The contract to install and provide the free WiFi for five years was won by Intechnology. The new service is up and running and has already been logged in to by thousands of users. The benefits of free public WiFi include: • Users save on their mobile data and associated charges, which encourages people to stay longer in town centres • Businesses can more effectively use the internet as a marketing tool to attract customers • It becomes easier for people to navigate through the towns and find the shops, restaurants and venues they are looking for • NWLDC can use data to monitor footfall trends in the towns. No personally identifiable data will be linked to the generation of footfall trends and statistics for either town. The value of the five-year contract, including installation, is £89,000. NWLDC is meeting much of this cost but has secured funding of £15,000 from Leicestershire County Council and £5,000 from the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP). Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business and Regeneration at NWLDC, said: “Extensive research shows that providing free WiFi to people visiting market towns has benefits for businesses, shoppers and tourists. We want our businesses to be able to trade and compete in the 21st century and to use their online footprint to attract customers. WiFi can help people find the nearest cafe, clothes shop, book store or restaurant and bring more custom to our towns. This is very much a long-term investment for us, boosted by funding from Leicestershire County Council and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP), which we believe will increase footfall, trade and the visitor experience in both Coalville and Ashby into the future.” Rob Woollard, Head of product and innovation of InTechnology Smart Cities, said: “Our free-to-use network will provide ubiquitous free connectivity to everyone in Ashby and Coalville, helping them to feel more connected and engaged, whether they are residents or visitors, and allowing them to access the services and benefits available in the digital world. North West Leicestershire District Council is a forward-looking organisation and we are excited about working in partnership to realise its vision to support economic development, local businesses, community engagement and social and digital inclusion.”

200+ people give their feedback – online survey now available More than 200 people attended a special community event to give their ideas and feedback about the future use of the Hermitage recreation ground and leisure centre site. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) is keen to encourage leisure and recreation on the site once the leisure centre moves from its current site in 2021, with paths and cycleways connecting it to the new Coalville Leisure Centre, which will be built just off Stephenson Way. Aside from these initial thoughts the future use of the site is completely open at this stage. A number of activities and uses were strongly supported by people at the event, with running, cycling, watersports and a café scoring highly, and many people supporting an emphasis on nature, that the site is dog friendly and that the model railway is retained. The idea of residential on the current leisure centre footprint was discussed, but was not supported by most of the people at the event, who would prefer leisure and recreation on the whole site. However, there was some support for a built indoor facility of some sort, including a tennis facility and a community centre. NWLDC is now asking for comments from people who couldn’t attend the event in November, with an online survey available at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ hermitagefuture The survey, which asks people what their priorities would be for the site and what they would like to see there, is open until Thursday 9th January 2020. Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services at NWLDC, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people at our drop-in event and to hear their ideas and feedback about the Hermitage site. We have no plans for the site yet, and it’s important that we get people’s views at this early stage so we can feed them into any masterplanning we do between now and when the leisure centre moves to its new home. I’d encourage people to head online and complete the survey, so we can get even more feedback that will help us guide the future development of the Hermitage site.”

Charles Booth Centre Enjoys Christmas Crooners Production Article by Nita Pearson
A full house at Charles Booth Centre enjoyed Theatre Production Europe Ltd’s charity production of Christmas Crooners on 26th November. A spokesperson for the centre said ‘It was a fun evening, with a lot of singing and laughter, and we want to thank the producers for bringing the event to our centre. Not only did they put on the show for free, but a producer also stood in for one of the performers who was unable to make the show at the last minute, just so the event could go ahead. Money raised at events like this will help us to fund renovation works we are currently planning, and we have a lot of other great events planned for December and into 2020. Thomas Giles Tennis News Article by Lisa Giles
Thomas Giles 2019 year of Tennis is giving him some amazing opportunities. Thomas who trains at Loughborough University with the Head Coach, Tom Kisiel has had a busy summer with some high level singles events and regional tournament wins. The pinnacle for him though was a Team tennis event. He played for a Leicestershire Tennis club team who won the National U14 Premier Team Tennis event. The team of 5 had to win though the club rounds early in the year to make it to the event in July at the prestigious National Tennis Centre in Roehampton where Andy Murray was training the very same weekend. The best 8 teams in the Country met for some high level tennis out on the grass courts. Thomas proudly put away the winning shot in the deciding doubles event against a strong team from Woodford Wells crowning them the best U14 Team in GB. In the summer Thomas was invited to play in the U14 G1 end of year National Finals at Nottingham Tennis Centre. This event sees the top 32 boys in the Country meet for some high calibre tennis. Thomas lost his first round match at this event in a tight 3 sets. Undeterred as always he carried on playing and won the next 4 matches to win the Consolation Draw Medal. Thomas ended this tournament 17th out of the top 32 players in the Country. Thomas also played in the doubles event in this tournament with partner Sam Parsons. They managed to get to the quarter finals playing against some strong doubles pairings. Thomas ended the summer of 2019 as No 1 in Leicestershire U14s, no 3 in the Midlands Region and no 13 GB National Ranking. In October Thomas made his debut into an U16 National competition in Bolton at just 14 years old. He had to win through a regional competition at Ipswich in September to enable him to qualify to play; this wasn’t an easy task in itself. Thomas embraced the opportunity to play in the qualifying draw of the U16 National event and over the first weekend he won the 2 rounds of matches to then qualify to play in the Main draw on the Sunday. Showing true determination these matches were won against older players in match tie breaks. In the main draw Thomas managed to win against a player ranked over 100 places higher than himself on the 16s rankings table. Thomas put the match away in 2 strong sets. He then had to request a day off school to play the 2nd round main draw match on the Monday. Thomas is at South Charnwood High school in his first GCSE year and the school are super supportive of his tennis journey. Thomas then came up against another older player who is
8 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
ranked GB no 11 for U16s. Thomas put up a really good fight to take the first set but age and experience prevailed with Thomas eventually losing in a long 3 set battle. This tournament gave Thomas lots of great learning opportunities. At the beginning of November Thomas headed off to Bath to play in the U14 National Competition. Not quite fully fit to play here Thomas didn’t quite make his goal of quarter finals in this tournament. He won his first round match and still putting out his determination on court he eventually lost to a stronger player in a long 3 set battle in the next round. The Tennis shown by Thomas in the U16s and U14s national events gave him LTA recognition. He was awarded an LTA wildcard to play in the qualifying draw of the Tennis Europe event in Liverpool last week. Thomas went to Liverpool as part of a group of players and coaches from the Edgbaston Priory Performance Tennis Team. This has proved to be another valuable learning experience playing against players from GB and also, Germany, France, Portugal and Ireland. Thomas played in the qualifying draw which was an instant elimination event once you lose. He had to win two matches to get through to the main draw. Thomas knocked out a French player and a GB player in the first two days. In the Main draw Thomas faced a young British player who made him work hard for a 3 set win. He then faced the no 5 seed German player. Thomas again showed lots of true grit and determination to win in 3 sets, saving match points against him in the 3rd set. Thomas singles journey came to an end in the quarter finals playing against the current GB no 1 U14 boy. Thomas lost 7-6, 6-4 in a very close match. The coach with him said the match was within Thomas capabilities which gives him some good learning for the future. In the Tennis Europe event in Liverpool Thomas partnered another British player, Jamie Diack to play in the doubles event. The boys who had never partnered before put out a strong presence and finished their journey at the semi-finals, losing out to the eventual tournament winners on a close match tie break. Along the way they knocked out the Portuguese pair who were seeded no 1 in the event and then an Irish pair too. Thomas loved the diversity of playing against players from different nations and is looking forward to hopefully starting to play in International Tennis events next year. Thomas also plays for Ashby Castle Tennis club and Loughborough Lawn Tennis club when he can for the men’s teams. He will be out for Ashby playing in the Fallows Cup very soon. So it’s back to the gym with his S&C coach Jon Coats of P6 Performance and back to the Loughborough and Edgbaston courts until the next challenges on his Tennis journey.

Lighting Lighting plays a huge factor in any Interior Design project I work on. It is ever so important to create a mood for an Interior. Top tip; Swap 'cool' bulbs for 'warm will create a warmer room. Candles at different levels in a group add a visual effect, and the flickering light is relaxing and warming (Just make sure their put out, when you out!) Battery/Fairy lights are a great way to add a warm light and can be hung around anything. Switch of the main 'task' lighting and used this secondary 'Ambient' lighting to create to add to the cosy, warm space. Texture Things to touch, and feel, that large soft throw that we can wrap around ourselves with a hot chocolate and Christmas film. Add plush faux fur rugs to dining chairs. Layer throws on furniture, faux fur, knitted or fleece and spend your winter days together snuggled in your cosy space!

Lord Lieutenant Cadet Honour For Loughborough College Trio Article by Elizabeth Udall
Loughborough College students have been appointed to three out of only four coveted Cadet roles by the Queen’s representative in the county to assist with official duties. For Halle Parker, MillieMae O’Callaghan and Saxon Nugent this could include them being called on as Cadet Forces ambassadors to accompany Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Leicestershire, Michael Kapur OBE, if a member of the royal family visits the area. Police Cadet and Loughborough College Sport Science student Halle, Sea Cadet and Public Services student Millie and Army Cadet Saxon, who is studying at the College’s Sixth Form for A-levels in Chemistry, Physics and Geography, were all thrilled to receive the good news. “There are more than 300 Leicestershire Police cadets so to hear I had been selected … it’s a tremendous honour. My parents are very proud. It’s actually amazing that three of the four people representing the whole of the county attend Loughborough College,” said Halle, 17. “I really want to join the police force and I’ve been a Cadet for around a year but already I’ve been involved in some amazing things. I supported undercover missions to check for underage drinking in pubs, I did the Leicester Pride event and I’ve been going into schools and to talk to the elderly about cyber security. I love it. And since becoming Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet I’ve also represented the Police at City Hall and Loughborough’s parade for Remembrance, as well as being a wreath bearer at the Leicester City, Arsenal game that weekend. And I may meet members of the royal family." “In the past couple of years I’ve had two suspected heart attacks and a functional neurological disorder which meant I was in a wheelchair for three months. But I powered through my GCSEs and was finally cleared medically and now I play rugby at Loughborough College alongside my studies. After going through all that, being appointed as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet feels particularly amazing.” “I can’t believe I was chosen from around 600 sea cadets,” added Millie, 16. “Michael Kapur arrived at our unit one evening and told me personally. I was speechless." “I have already laid a wreath at the Remembrance Sunday event in Victoria Park and I felt very honoured to have been given the opportunity to talk to veterans about their experiences at a service at County Hall." “I am hoping that when I finish my course at Loughborough College I can join the navy and study at university alongside it, eventually becoming a mental health nurse for the service. I have experience of this in my own family and have always wanted to help people out.” Saxon, 17, admits he didn’t expect the outcome to be positive when he was shortlisted alongside seven other army cadets. “I was a lower rank than all of them and also knew all but one of them – and they are great people. I didn’t want to get my hopes up. To be told I had been appointed was amazing – particularly to have it announced at camp in front of 1000 cadets!" “I’ve been involved with cadets for four years and have enjoyed every minute. I’ve done expeditions with rock climbing and gorge walking and ice skiing in Italy. I’ve also worked with regular soldiers in the Royal Anglian regiment. I’ve had brilliant opportunities and I want to seize every one and this year as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet is no exception. It’s incredible to think I could be involved with royal visits. “This is such an honour and I want to strive to be the best I can.”

Rachael Is Whitwick’s Woman Of The Year 2019! Article by Sharon Dawson
A super slimmer has been named Whitwick’s Slimming World ‘Woman of the Year’ 2019 thanks to her incredible 7st weight loss. Rachael 50, from Packington, was chosen to represent the Whitwick Slimming World group in the nationwide Slimming World Woman of the Year 2019 competition, which aims to find the UK and Ireland’s most inspiring female slimmer*. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition celebrates the achievements of thousands of women up and down the country who have made long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Rachael who down-sized from a dress size 22 to a 12, says: “When I first joined group I never dreamt that I would be in the position I am now. Losing weight has made such a big difference to my life. My health has improved, I have more energy, I’m happier and I feel more comfortable in my own skin.” Rachael joined Slimming World in January 2018 after worrying about her health and fearing she had diabetes. “I started to put on weight due to working long hours and my food habits and choices were not good. I tried, in the past, different ways to lose weight but they usually left me feeling hungry or miserable – or both, in fact. With Slimming World it’s completely different. My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat and lose weight. I still eat all my favourite meals, like pasta and risotto. I just prepare and cook them differently now – and they taste so much better. I never have to miss out and I don’t have to get hung up on weighing and measuring everything I eat. I’ve picked up so many tips and healthy recipes from the other members at my Slimming World group, too. I know it can feel like a big step joining Slimming World because you don’t know what to expect, but, right from the first moment I walked into my group I was made to feel at ease, and the support I’ve received has been amazing. I look forward to going each week to catch up with all of my new friends – I just love it!” From the first week Rachael was blown away that the changes she’d made had such a big impact so quickly. As the weight started to come off, she started to think about how active she was, and Rachael now loves running and doing classes at the leisure centre. She says: “I feel like a different woman to the one who walked into Slimming World 23 months ago and winning Woman of the Year is a real honour because there are so many amazing women in our group. I remember feeling like I would never be happy in my own skin again, but I’ve realised that when people believe in you – and you believe in yourself – you can do anything you set your mind to. I really hope my weight loss can inspire other people to get started on their own journey and know that there’s a whole group of people waiting to support them every step of the way – especially at the Whitwick group. I hit my initial target weight of 6.5 stones in April and then in July I altered it to 7 stones, which I achieved in August and my aim is to stay there for life, which I know I can do.” Sharon, who runs the Whitwick group, says: “I’m so proud of Rachael. She’s a fantastic ambassador for Slimming World and what she’s achieved is nothing short of incredible. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women – and men – in Whitwick to change their lives in the same way.” The Whitwick Slimming World group is held every Monday at 5.30 and 7.30pm at Hall Lane Methodist Church. To join or find out more call Sharon on 07855 250017.

Have Yourself A Merry Stress-Free Christmas Article by Gary Trickett
Advent calendars to the ready… the countdown to the big day has begun! The lead-up to Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year, not to mention one of the most stressful. Worry not! The following tips should help to ensure this Christmas is memorable for all the right reasons. Step back and take a deep breath. If you keep thinking about the mountain of jobs you have to do, you’ll soon feel overwhelmed. Break them down into small, manageable tasks. Control your breathing. By taking fewer but deeper breaths you will optimise your oxygen intake, helping you to relax and remain calm. Brilliant for when your family make helpful suggestions. Watch your diet. In times of stress, certain nutrients are used in larger quantities than normal so increase supply where necessary. The B vitamins and magnesium help to support the nervous system, vitamin C helps to support your adrenal glands and iron is important for energy. As far as herbals are concerned, Passiflora has been used for centuries as a mild sedative and is particularly beneficial when mixed with other restorative herbs such as Avena sativa. Together they help to combat the physical and mental symptoms of stress, helping to prolong sleep time, relieve muscle tension and alleviate mild anxiety. If stress is affecting your sleep, try Valerian; it is recognised for its calming action and is thought to inhibit the breakdown of GABA, a chemical transmitter that enables you to ‘cross over’ into sleep. Finally, keep moving! Exercise is a great way of beating stress and it causes the brain to produce more endorphins, the so-called ‘happy hormones’. Now, where did you put those baubles? For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Stephenson College Celebrates Airport Partnership With Milestone Course Article by Karen D’Aguilar
Stephenson College, Coalville, joined forces with East Midlands Airport to celebrate its 100th Academy course. EMA’s Academy provides support and training to job seekers to help them gain employment within the airport site. Since the Academy opened in 2013, over 1,000 local unemployed people have been trained to a Level 2 in Customer Service. Nearly 400 of these have taken up the opportunity for a week of work experience, and over 600 have secured work on or near EMA. Stephenson College is proud to partner the academy to deliver preemployment training to local job seekers. The free, two-week course, provides job seekers with the skills required for employment as well as a Level Two qualification in Customer Service. Angela Bartlett, who sat the course in 2018 after moving to the area, now works in passenger services at the airport. She said: “It was the best thing I ever did. The support I received gave me the confidence to re-enter the workforce following my move. This training programme is more than a qualification; it is a support network and like one big family. They helped me with my CV, interview techniques and without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. I still return regularly for a catch-up over a cup of tea. They always make time for me and are still providing support and advice. I would encourage anyone who is looking for work to attend an assessment day to find out more and register onto the course.” Anthony Pemberton found employment in EMA’s passenger services team before moving to ground-handling firm Swissport who are based at the airport. He stated, "I hadn’t worked for nine years after caring for my grandmother, the support I received was unique and led me to where I am today. The programme allowed me to see all aspects of the airport and has enabled me to secure a job that I love. I couldn’t have done it without the support of all the staff from the college and the academy.” Chery Power, Section Head Technology and Professional Services at Stephenson College, stated, "We are delighted to be supporting people in the local area to find work. The course not only provides the skills and qualifications they need to secure a job but gives them the confidence to apply for jobs, attend interviews and continue to progress their career once in employment. We are very proud to be a part of that journey.” Dave Gale, EMA’s Airport Academy Co-Ordinator, who has been sharing his expertise and knowledge since 2015, as well as being a pillar of support for all the candidates that attend the training programme, said: “This training programme is more than just a qualification and it gives me great pleasure to see people grow in confidence as the course progresses and secure themselves a job at the end of it. I am lucky to work with Emma and Tom from the college who are fantastic and have the same passion and dedication as I do to provide the best service and support that we can.” If you would like to find out more about this training programme email airportacademy@eastmidlandsairport.com
Extra Patrols Officers will be working extended hours throughout December undertaking high visibility patrols to reassure the community and deter offences during this busy period. Significant police activity will be seen around retail areas, bars and clubs. If you see us around please do stop and chat!
North West Leicestershire Neighbourhood Police News Article by Inspector Rich Jackson
Happy Christmas and welcome to the December 2019 edition of the North West Leicestershire Police newsletter which as you would expect is predominantly festive related. Since my previous circulation the policing team have had a busy few months the key positive community headlines include; Coalville Remembrance Day I was honoured to represent the police at this year’s Remembrance Day parade in Coalville. The turnout for this event is always significant and reflects how grateful the local community are of those who paid the ultimate price in protecting our freedom and those who serve or have served in the military. The Coalville Police cadet unit also took part in the event and all did an excellent job in marching and representing the NWL cadet unit. Our cadets are all volunteers and undertake meaningful activity with Coalville police on a weekly basis. All learnt how to march and did us proud. White Ribbon Day White Ribbon Day is the global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women and girls. It has been established since 1991 and the theme for this year is 'Make the Promise.’ Our Chief Constable, Simon Cole is an ambassador for the campaign. Locally Deputy Commander Lindsey BOOTH and PCSO Tony GALLAGHER supported the campaign with colleagues from the local authority at Morrison’s Coalville. Alcohol Awareness Week As part of alcohol awareness week our PCSO team have spent time working with the fire service at Stephenson’s college to educate around the dangers of drink drive. This included a beer goggles exercise which saw students using a simulated driving game whilst wearing beer goggles, the idea being to show the effects of alcohol. This event was very well received and enabled excellent engagement with students and staff. Celebrate Safely As we approach the festive season the police and partners work together to remind the community on how to celebrate safely. Andy Cooper from NWLDC Licensing team, Dean Pidcock, Station Manager, Leicestershire Fire & Rescue and Inspector Jackson recently gave inputs on Hermitage FM give some practical advice around personal safety and plans over the festive period.
Cyber Crime You are more likely to be a victim of cybercrime than any other crime type. NWL Police and NWLDC recognise this and have been busy delivering educational initiatives. Led by Sgt Jayne Dolby, Jayne who has arranged a number of inputs at Parish meetings, local businesses, schools and parenting groups all of which continue to be very well received. Sgt Dolby’s next event sees her working with King Edward School on a cyber awareness and personal safety week which is supported by NWLDC and fire service. This event will see pupils and parents being engaged and educated around cybercrime and personal safety. These events are part delivered by our cyber expert Sam Hancock and Sgt Dolby and are free to attend, please see our social media pages. Jayne can also facilitate events for any groups on NWL and is contactable via Jayne.Dolby@ leicestershire.pnn.police.uk. Warren Hills School Competition To help inspire pupils Sgt Jayne Dolby, Fire and NWLDC are currently supporting the school with a number of exciting projects which have so far seen pupils visit the fire and police station and take part in a number of exciting activities. This work continues with Sgt Dolby setting a Christmas card competition, the winners will spend time with the police and fire service delivering cards to care homes in the area and will also be awarded with a Christmas gift. This work led by Sgt Dolby in her own time reflects our commitment to help young people. Taxi Licensing Operation We work closely with the taxi licensing department from NWLDC and take the safety of passengers very seriously. Our latest operation in the run up to Christmas saw us undertake full examinations on 12 taxis resulting in a number of minor faults being identified. We will be continuing this work in the coming weeks which also sees the multi-agency team visit public houses to ensure licence conditions are being adhered to. Retirement Of PS Rog Barlow Sadly December sees the end of an era for Police Sgt Roger BARLOW who has been a police officer for 30 years. Rog is a unique character and leads our proactive team he has been instrumental in tackling drugs misuse and other serious crime in the area. His work around county lines has seen him participate in a number of conferences around the country as he is an expert in this field. During his service Rog and his team have been recognised with a number of awards for exceptional work. Prior to becoming a police officer Rog served in the military and has many a story to tell regarding his experiences travelling the world which I will certainly miss hearing. Rog intends to continue his voluntary work with scouting groups when he retires which is something he is also well regarded for. Roger has been a great asset to NWL and will be missed by myself and the wider team. Rog thank you and all the best in your retirement! Replacing Rog will be Sgt 4107 Gary Sirrell who has recently transferred to us from Staffordshire Police. Gary brings with him a varied policing background from neighbourhood policing to tackling serious organised crime and will be a welcome addition to the team.

The Air That We Breathe When I first came to Coalville, in the early 1990s, the winter air was thick with soot. The mines had already closed but many former miners still received a coal allowance that kept them warm in winter. As a GP in Hugglescote, I looked after a population with high rates of chronic lung disease. Dying of breathlessness is not a nice way to go. Things have improved since then but there are still threats to air quality in North West Leicestershire. The focus now is mainly on the pollutants that come from our roads. At the end of November, Councillors at NWLDC scrutinised a paper on Air Quality in our district. There was a feeling that something wasn’t quite right, and the issue needed another look. This isn’t the first time that Cllr Sean Sheahan and I have raised concerns. Back in 2017 Public Health England showed that North West Leicestershire had the worst mortality rates (5.8%) attributable to fine particulate air pollution of any Council area within the East Midlands. Dust Particles Can Shorten Your Life Fine particulates, known as PM2.5 dust particles, are tiny. They get past the body’s physical defences - nasal hairs, mucus and so on - and land in your lungs. They cause chronic lung disease and can shorten your healthy life. They are produced by combustion engines and tyres on roads. Vehicles also produce nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Because these two pollutants are generally found together you can estimate the levels of PM2.5 by measuring NO2 at the roadside. Or at least you can if there are no other local sources of particulates. Such as a quarry or an airport. Back in 2017 Sean and I asked the District Council to work with the County Council and the Director of Public Health to measure PM2.5s and find out why the mortality rate in North West Leicestershire due to PM2.5s was worse than in our nearest cities. Our calls fell on deaf ears. The motion was amended. The ruling Conservative group didn’t want to measure PM2.5 particulates in case it had an adverse effect on the quarries and the airport. They didn’t seem to care that not measuring these pollutants leaves us unable to manage them. This year’s Air Quality Report, which came to scrutiny in November told Councillors that there are “no areas in the district exceeding the EU Air Quality Directive”. But that simply can’t be right. Sean and I have already seen data from Public Health published in May. It shows that NWLeics is a hotspot for PM2.5 pollution and it isn’t all due to roads and motorways. A Lack Of Political Will So why aren’t the Council measuring PM2.5s? It comes down to money and a lack of political will. The District Council has a statutory responsibility to measure NO2. It does not have a statutory responsibility to measure PM2.5. Aggregate Industries are only required to measure nuisance dust, in the form of the larger PM10s. They don’t have to measure dangerous PM2.5s. If we are not measuring PM2.5s we cannot manage them. I have written to the Mineral Products Association, who represent the 13 aggregate, cement and concrete producers in the district, to ask for their help. From my position on the Bardon Aggregates Liaison Committee, I am aware that responsible industries take the monitoring and managing of dust very seriously. I do hope these industries will join with me in asking for a co-ordinated approach to the measurement of PM2.5s in North West Leicestershire.

Christmas In Coalville
EARAXXX- 08/2018
Once again Christmas in Coalville fails to bring a bit of Christmas spirit to our town. The lights are once again an embarrassment and desperately in need of upgrading. Members of the Coalville special will be making it their priority to vastly improve the lights for 2020, and members of the committee have made it clear that the fireworks display is a waste of money and the cost could be spent elsewhere to deliver a more appealing Christmas experience in Coalville. I, along with my colleagues are determined to improve our town. Yes it will cost more money but Coalville deserves better. We have had to many years of putting up with second best. The council need to work with local businesses and local residents so we can once again be proud of our Town.
London Road Cemetery Update - Information Board Installed Some time ago I managed to convince the council to apply for external and I asked the council for some funding to improve the London Road Cemetery which was left unattended. The new notice board installed contains information about the local history of the Cemetery, and information about some local individuals who are laid to rest in this area. I have also asked for a more detailed report about the people who have been laid to rest in the Cemetery so it’s not lost. With the help of the council and bardon Aggregate who kindly gave a grant to this project we have managed to not only improve the Cemetery but also provide a bit of local history that recognises individuals who contributed and lived within our Town. The council are also looking at further improvements which will allow cremation burials to take place which will give local people the opportunity to be buried in the heart of the Coalville.
