Coalville Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club
www.bosworthhomecare.co.uk
On Saturday 27th January 2018 at the FM Community Café in Coalville Leicestershire the Coalville Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club was officially opened. The club was opened by the Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, Councillor Virge Richichi. He was accompanied by the club founder Mr Bill Brown. The club is run by Armed Forces & Veterans for Armed Forces & Veterans. There is no cost to those attending apart from the food and drink they consume. There are no subs or donations. It’s completely free to the members. A massive thank you must go to Jan and John from Hermitage FM Community Radio who hosted the event in their Community Café. Also, a massive thank you to the fantastic staff who, led by Sue, where outstanding. The service they provided was very much appreciated and very positive comments were made by those attending. To top, what was an already exceptional event, we then had the honour and privilege of welcoming, to our club, the Bishop of Leicester, the Right Reverend Martyn Snow. The Bishop and his visiting party were being hosted by our local church, St David’s at Broom Leys, on the Bishop’s Big Conversation visit. The Bishop and his party were very well received. We hope to see all the Forces & Veterans again on the last Saturday of February. Thank you to everybody who supported us today. Just in case you weren’t sure yes, I am a Sapper. The club will meet at the FM café at 0930 hours on the last Saturday of the month. For more details contact Bill Brown on 01530 835839, 07876 748 113 or bill.brown940@gmail.com

Coalville Scam We have had several incidents where a person is ringing up a member of the public claiming to be an Officer from West Mids, they claim to be investigating fraud and that the bank the person is using is handing over fake notes. They ask the victim to ring 999 to confirm their identity, the person unknowingly then does not hang up properly so when they ring 999, as they believe they have, they speak to someone who then confirms the callers ID.
Whitwick & District The next monthly General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be on Friday 16th February. This will be another opportunity to discover how the U3A can support the wellbeing of retired people who want to keep active mentally or physically. U3A members are involved in a wide range of Interest Groups which are all based on self-help. At the General Meeting, Group Leaders and others will be available to answer questions and pass on information about our U3A.
Redesign Of Marlborough Square Approved A redesign of Marlborough Square in Coalville has been approved by North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Cabinet. The redesign, which has been drawn up alongside local businesses and organisations that use the square, includes pedestrianising most of the area and creating an open space that can be used for events.
February’s guest speaker will be Pete Russell who will talk on behalf of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. Pete’s presentation will feature the amazing history of one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals which opened in 1852, the first hospital to offer dedicated inpatient care to children in the UK. We will learn about the importance of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity; something of the medical breakthroughs and pioneering work at the hospital; and tales of the young patients and their families. It should be a moving and remarkable story.
Part of the council’s Choose Coalville project, which aims to regenerate and build confidence in the town, this development sees NWLDC investing a further £1.1 million in the town.
To listen to Pete and discover more about our thriving and friendly U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. Everyone is welcome: the U3A is a non-political and non-religious organisation. Alternatively, visit our website www.whitwicku3a.org. uk where you will find full details about Whitwick and District U3A.
The plan has been developed in consultation with 29 businesses and organisations that are based on Marlborough Square and on the surrounding roads. It has overall support from these businesses, who welcome the plans.
The proposed concept plan creates a high quality public square, with: • Outdoor seating areas • New tree planting • A more pedestrian friendly environment, with vehicles encouraged to slow down using narrower carriageways and alternative surfacing • Improved bus passenger waiting areas • A new taxi rank • Underground power cabling to allow events to take place more easily • A Christmas tree pit • New public art. • Changes to the traffic flow will mean vehicles can only travel through the square one way – from Jackson Street to Belvoir Road. The free parking spaces currently in the square will be re-provided elsewhere, with a small number of very short stay parking spaces remaining.
Paul Hocking owns 2 Fat Ladies Leisure Ltd which has recently taken over the former Flutters bingo club in Marlborough Square. He said: “We fully believe that the new proposals for the square match our ambition and aspirations for the bingo club and this plan definitely had an influence on our decision to purchase the site. We are totally behind the proposal and believe that this ambitious regeneration of the area can only help our business in the future. It is refreshing to see the local council is like minded and willing to work with local businesses.” Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “We know there is a local desire to make Marlborough Square great again. Once a real central point in the town, the square is now cluttered and isn’t a nice place to be. If you’re going to judge a town, you judge it by its public spaces, and what we’ve got at the moment in Marlborough Square is pretty poor. These plans will put the soul back into the square, allowing the council and others to hold events there and creating a much nicer public space for Coalville. We’re particularly pleased that businesses and organisations around the square, and others that use it, including the bus and taxi companies, have worked with us to develop this redesign, which we believe ticks the box for most people. I’m looking forward to seeing it take shape.” Leicestershire County Council has been commissioned to carry out detailed design work, which will include ground investigations and technical modelling, which should be complete by April 2018. Once the final plans are drawn up, it will take up to six months to carry out the work, with the new square expected to be completed by winter 2018/19.
The caller then asks the victim to attend their bank, and withdraw their savings, they stay on the phone to the victim all the time and offer prompts about using the money for a holiday if asked by the cashier why they want to withdraw so much money. Once the caller is back home they ask they victim to read out some serial numbers from the bank notes and claim they are fake and they will send a courier around to collect the money. Sadly they have been successful, they are very good at this and it is well rehearsed so the victims believe it to be true and that they are assisting Police in their enquiries. This is a scam, the police will NOT call you asking you to withdraw cash. If you receive a call as described, terminate the call, and make another call through to Leicestershire Police on either 101 or 999 if appropriate to do so, detailing what has happened. The Baldwin Trust - Fancy A Boat Trip? Looking To Volunteer? Or Want To Help Donate? Our charity has been operating since 1983. We operate two 70foot narrow boats on the canals and river system throughout Leicestershire. The Trust is completely manned by 45 volunteers. We were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in 2010. The mission of our trust is to enhance the wellbeing for people of all ages, especially those living with disabilities, mental illness or social exclusion or isolation. The boat trips provided by the Trust can provide learning and recreational opportunities to disadvantaged or isolated people and their carers which will allow them to maintain a healthy lifestyle or discover new experiences or gain skills. This in turn can improve the quality of their life opportunities. Toy Joy For Lucky Winners Of Town’s Festive Trail Fifteen lucky children have collected their prizes after conquering Coalville’s Christmas Toy Trail. With the support of 15 shops and businesses, North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) hid toys all around Coalville in December and asked youngsters to track them all down. The hidden toys, which included Rapunzel and Fireman Sam, have now been given to 15 of the children that took part. Everyone who completed the trail received a small prize when they handed their finished form in. NWLDC and local businesses created the toy trail to encourage families to explore businesses and shops in Coalville that they might have never visited before. Businesses that took part in the Christmas in Coalville Toy Trail were: • Alma’s – 12 Jackson Street • Coalville Library – High Street • Coalville Shopmobility – Belvoir Shopping Centre • Hermitage FM – Memorial Square • Hinckley and Rugby Building Society – 3a Marlborough Square • Lloyds Bank – 20 Belvoir Road • Market Cafe – Coalville Market Hall • Petsworld – 6a Jackson Street • SP Sales and Lettings – 7 Belvoir Road • Sugar and Ice – 24-28 Hotel Street • The Attic – 24 Belvoir Road • The Cob Shop – 8a Ashby Road • The Crafty Treasure House – 22 Hotel Street • The Flower Garden – 12b Belvoir Road • Treat Me Nice – 20 Ashby Road Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Well done to all the children that took part in the toy trail and to all the businesses that were involved in making this a success. We have a big variety of shops in Coalville, if you know where to look, and lots of great independent businesses. We want people to choose Coalville when they need to shop, and we hope the positive experience of the toy trail encourages families to out into the town again and support our local businesses.” The trail also ran in conjunction with the Coalville best dressed window and market stall competition, which saw a record people 640 vote for the winners of the two categories. The Attic in Belvoir Road won the award for the best dressed window in the town, while Rock-A-Billy’s Records landed victory in the best dressed market stall competition.
Our two narrow boats are very old. St. Clare was built in 1988 and Dandelion (we think) in 1980. During the last 6 months, mechanical failures have resulted in the cancellation of approximately 35-day trips booked by our service users. This equates to over 400 individuals who were not able to enjoy a day in the fresh air, on the water and accordingly, they would have remained in their care homes or normal accommodation. The condition of the boats will lead to more breakdowns and the replacement of one or more boats is the only option that we have. The age of the boats is now meaning that spare parts are not readily available thus increasing the amount of non-operational activity and expense as alternatives have to be sought. The beneficiaries of our work are varied but generally, they are all from within Leicestershire and Rutland or close by. We have served a variety of different organisations, mainly Care homes but also Autistic and Asperger’s organisation, “HITS” homeless teenagers, AGE UK, Women’s Institutes and a variety of centres for the physically and mentally disadvantaged including “Headway” and LCC Child Protection homes. By the end of October 2017, we will have expected to carry more than 1700 people from in and around Leicestershire and environs on 160 trips. We hope that you can see that we do “make a difference” to people’s lives. At least 70% of our groups contain one or more wheelchair users. Our volunteers are desperately trying to raise funds to place an order for a new boat. Our project is called “Put a foot in the water for the Baldwin Trust”. Even if we can raise the necessary funding in the next 3 months to place an order, we will not get our new boat until 2019. We have raised 50% of the required funds for the new boat and are applying for more grants and donations. We are also implementing a major refurbishment programme for the two existing boats because, if we fail to take action now, we believe that 2018 will see a continuing heavy drain on our valuable financial resources (due to repair costs), trying to keep our ageing boats operational thus, pushing the possibility of attaining our new boat further away from reality. Our vision is to operate 4 boats in all providing services to between 4,000-5,000 clients throughout Leicestershire and the surrounding counties. Age Concern UK (Leicester), states in their latest survey that there are over 1 million “lonely” people in the UK and that 3.7 million - people live alone! It is not hard to see that this problem will grow and our believe is that with early, low level interventions from active community projects, such as The Baldwin Trust, will lessen the impact on health and well-being of isolation and exclusion for many.

Older people, who just need someone to pop in once a week to help them with cleaning and shopping, may be told to ask someone else instead. If you live next to a patch of Council land, expect it to be built on. If you park on-street in a town-centre, prepare to find money for a meter. With Highways improvement money being used to keep the roads repaired, don’t expect traffic problems to get better any time soon.

Michael Wyatt

Wyatt Welcomes Marlborough Square Investment Cllr Michael Wyatt has welcomed the decision to finally re-develop
Marlborough Square. Cllr Michael Wyatt a long time campaigner for more investment in the Town Centre and a local businessman said:
“At last things are starting to move forward in Coalville. The Cabinet on NWLDC agree to spend £1.1 Million on this much needed project. It’s
has my 100% support, but like I said to the Chief Executive of the Council at a recent meeting, we must continue to be bigger and bolder in our attempts to regenerate our Town. Only by investing in our Town will it
bring confidence to existing businesses and attract new businesses to the area. Coalville Town as so much potential. Millions have been successfully spent in neighbouring Hinckley which was just as run down as Coalville. £1.1 Million is a start but we need probably 10 times that amount to finally deliver what we deserve in our Town.”
Wyatt Attacks Council Over Poor Christmas Festivities In Coalville Local Councillor Michael Wyatt has attacked the Council for their extremely poor Christmas festivities in Coalville which taxpayers contribute, which is in the region of £8,000.
Cllr Michael Wyatt spoke at a recent meeting of the Coalville Special
Expense where he told council members and officers that the Christmas festivities were the worst he has ever experienced.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "I am extremely annoyed that yet again the
Christmas festivities failed to provide much needed support to our small independent traders. The idea of a Christmas switch on is supposed to
encourage more people into the town. Many businesses I have spoken to have told me that the Christmas festivities did not bring any extra
customers into their shops, in fact many reported it was probably one look again at the Christmas festivities but I do not hold any hope things attitude to celebrating Christmas. Unfortunately this years event looks set to be another disaster.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service.
Cloudy2Clear GUARANTEE All Customers That An Average Quote Will Take No Longer Than 20 MINS!!!
Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that
obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Coalville & Hugglescote areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
