Soccer Teams NHS Donation A Winner For Mental Health Wellbeing ‘Rival’ cricket and football players from Coalville have united in a charity soccer match to raise £600 for a local NHS mental health team. The players from Broomleys FC and Broomleys Cricket Club donated half the proceeds from a festive friendly to Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s (LPT) North West County Adult Community Mental Health Team. The team, based at The Hawthorn Centre on the site of Coalville Community Hospital, provides treatment and support for adults with a range of mental health needs, ranging from anxiety and depression to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The fund-raising match was the idea of Broomleys FC founder Matthew Clarke, who is also a longtime member of the cricket club. He said: “The football club is only a year old and a charity match was the perfect way to end our first season. We all agreed it was important to give back to a local service and mental health is close to my heart and to others in the football team, who include a number of my fellow cricketers from Broomleys CC.” Club members talk openly on their Facebook page about mental health issues and Matthew added: “Mental health has been in the spotlight more and more in recent times, and for good reason. The players and their friends and families really rose to the challenge to support our first charity event and we raised a total of £1,203, half of which will be used for the club, including new kit. We now will endeavour to make this an annual event and continue to support the service.” The money will be used by the team of specialist nurses, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, social workers and psychologists to enhance patient care beyond the service they are commissioned to provide.

Team manager Janine Hammersley said “It was a lovely surprise to be included as beneficiaries in this fundraising event. The amount raised by the teams and the generosity of people has been fantastic and we are grateful and humbled by this thoughtful gesture. The staff at the Hawthorn Centre are dedicated to providing care for 900 people across North West Leicestershire. This includes assessments and treatment plans which are focused on recovery, enhancing wellbeing and people’s potential. Activities such as sports and involvement in community pursuits which this club represents are a fantastic way to enhance health and wellbeing. We don’t know yet how the money will be spent, we will be asking patients and staff how they would like us to use it and making sure it benefits patients. I would like to personally thank our receptionist Anna Sheppard who represented our team on the day and to the club members and supporters for their kind generosity.” Anna went down to the Hermitage Recreation Ground in Whitwick at the end of the match – a 5-4 victory for the cricketers – to say a personal thank you to the soccer teams. She said: “We were surprised and delighted when the club got in touch to tell us what they had planned. We are so grateful, what a wonderful gesture.” LPT’s fundraising manager, Lindsay Woodward, added: “It’s wonderful that so many sports players now are talking about mental health and this donation from the Broomleys teams is doubly welcome because it’s not just allowing us to add something more to the service we provide, it’s also helping us to break down barriers around mental health.”

NWLDC Committed To Marlborough Square Redesign Article written by Caroline Ormond
The Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has confirmed his commitment to the redesign of Marlborough Square in Coalville as part of the council’s work to regenerate the town.
New Year New Start! Volunteers Required For Vital Roles In Helping To Support Older People Article written by Sharleen Taylor
Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest voluntary service
organisations in the country and inspires and enables 20,000 volunteers to give their skills, experience, energy and time to help people in
need in hospitals, at home and in the community. Locally in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we support approximately 2,000 older people per year with our services.
Work on the scheme was halted last year when costs came in too far above professional estimates. NWLDC had been using the Leicestershire County Council (LCC) procurement process to find a contractor to carry out the work.
These services include helping older people who have been discharged
At a cross party meeting last night (Wednesday 9 January), councillors discussed and challenged the process. Councillor Blunt indicated that NLWDC will take on responsibility for designing the scheme, which will create a public square that can be used for markets and events.
Teresa Gibbs – Commissioned Services Operations Manager for Royal
The Council’s Cabinet will consider the next steps with the project next week at its meeting on Tuesday 15 January. The council may decide to seek a contractor through its own processes and finalise the designs. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We could have walked away from this scheme when the cost for the redesign of came in significantly above professional estimates, but we didn’t. Instead, we can look at taking the work that has already been done, reworking the designs and seeking a new contractor to make sure we can create the new public square for Coalville in a sensible way. We thank Leicestershire County Council for their advice and design work so far and look forward to continue working with them on the highways elements of the scheme. We know some people have their doubts, particularly as we started and stopped the work last year, but we also know that there are lots of people who want positive change in Coalville. The main thing is that this promising work goes ahead in Coalville to rejuvenate what was once the heart of the town.”
from hospital to rebuild their confidence and remain independent once they return home, providing transport to help with shopping, attending hospital appointments or support with social opportunities. In addition our volunteers provide valuable company and friendship as well as making sure that the older person is safe and well.
Voluntary Service: “The demand for our services is always increasing and as a result of this we are looking to recruit more volunteers to allow us to continue to offer the support to local older people. Our volunteers make a significant and positive difference to older people’s lives and without their incredible contribution we would certainly not be able to provide the current level and range of services.”
Chris Cordle, a retired NHS medical psychologist from Leicester, is a
Royal Voluntary Service volunteer. She delivers the charity’s Home from Hospital service which helps settle older people back into home after a
hospital stay. She says: “I missed the satisfaction of working with people - I loved that part of my job. Volunteering has filled that gap. I enjoy
working with older people, hearing their stories and helping them to
achieve their aims. Much of my career was about motivating and helping people, and that’s what I’m still doing now. I really enjoy encouraging people to achieve their personal targets. It’s very satisfying.”
We would really like to hear from local people who may be
interested in this very worthwhile volunteering opportunity, a couple of hours per week really can make a real difference to the quality of older people’s lives.

Lasting Power Of Attorney
Article written by Klara Hesling What happens when I can’t make decisions for myself? Many of us would like to plan for a time when we need help making decisions. A stroke, a heart attack, Alzheimer’s disease or a severe accident can leave us dependent upon other people to help make crucial choices in our lives. Or we may need to give someone decisionmaking power for us if, say, we’re going to be in hospital or abroad for a time and can’t easily carry out decisions for ourselves. To plan for the future you can create a lasting power of attorney (LPA). An LPA is a simple way for you to choose someone you trust to make decisions for you. LPAs can be a lot less expensive than other ways for people to make decisions on your behalf and can make things much easier for other people in your life than the alternatives. Who might need an LPA? Anyone potentially. Common illnesses such as cancer or heart disease can leave us reliant on other people to make decisions happen. More than 800,000 people in the UK have dementia, and the Alzheimer’s Society predicts this will rise to more than one million by 2025. As for accidents, every 90 seconds someone is admitted to hospital in the UK with a brain injury – traffic or contact-sport accidents are examples of what can go wrong. How does an LPA work? An LPA is a legal document that you create. In your LPA, you name the people you’d like to make decisions for you when you don’t want to or can’t make some decisions yourself. You can make an LPA for decisions about your property and money or about your health and welfare. When does an LPA start working? You can create an LPA to be used only if you can no longer make your own decisions – known as losing ‘mental capacity’. Or you can make an LPA to be used for certain decisions – financial ones – while you still have mental capacity. What could happen if I don’t create an LPA? If you lose mental capacity, through illness or injury, and haven’t created an LPA: • You'll no longer be able to decide who makes decisions for you (you can only make your LPA while you still have mental capacity) • People you don’t know could end up making crucial decisions for you instead – such as whether to accept medical treatment to keep you alive, or about where you live, what you eat and wear • Your spouse, children or friends might have to go to court to make decisions on your behalf – which can be a lot more expensive and time-consuming than making an LPA. If you still have mental capacity, LPAs are a simple and legally robust way of giving someone you trust power to make decisions for you – temporarily or for a longer time. Kornerstone Legal Services Ltd are specialists in organising this.

£38,385 Gift For Women Article written by Mark Storer
A new high-tech ultrasound scanner that helps in the early detection of womb cancer has been bought for the Kettering General Hospital by Coalville charity Brown Dog. Last week Mark Storer (Chairman of Brown Dog) and his wife Helen presented the £38,385 Voluson S10 Scanner to the hospital’s gynaecology department. The device is capable of an amazingly detailed 3D image enabling a detailed inspection of the womb. It will be used to help the 2,000 women per year who present in hospital with post-menopausal bleeding - something which can be an important symptom of endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb). Consultant gynaecologist, Mrs Pratibha Patil (shown in the photograph) said: “This extraordinary donation by Brown Dog has enabled us to purchase one of the most up-to-date ultra sound scanners in existence to support our patients. This new state-of-the-art scanner has superb clarity and detail resolution in 2D images and is able to provide 3D imaging which helps us to better explain to patients what is happening." “While it primarily will help us with cancer detection it will also help us to manage other benign gynaecological conditions such as fibroid's or ovarian cysts. Having this type of scanner will directly support patients who are referred to our post-menopausal bleeding clinics to have a scan to rule out any possibility of cancer. It will assist us in accurate diagnosis and help avoid unnecessary camera testing (hysteroscopy) and biopsy which mean coming into hospital for a procedure. In most women it will be very reassuring because it will quickly rule out cancer. Where we do detect a problem – and womb cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women in the UK - early diagnosis is a very important factor in survival and cure. By having this scanner we are able to improve the service we are able to offer to local people and we are extremely grateful for Brown Dog’s amazing support.” Mark Storer, who founded the Brown Dog charity, said: “We are very proud that every penny we raise is used to purchase essential equipment like this that will directly help people fighting cancer. People who support us can see where their kind donation is used. Since we were formed we have raised nearly £600,000 to buy vital state-of-theart equipment for hospitals across the UK. Whilst the majority of this money has been used to support Leicestershire hospitals, this year we were delighted to help Kettering. Most of the money we raise comes from our annual fundraising challenge in June and over the years this has included running marathons, sponsored walks, coast-to-coast cycle event, mountain climbs and canoeing. The donation for Kettering came as a result of a 40-mile coastal walk which we held in June 2018 on the English Riviera near Torquay. Considerable money also came from the annual Brown Dog Netball Competition held in Ashby de-la Zouch in September that attracted over 200 men and women from across North West Leicestershire. I want to thank all of the people who took part in this year’s event and particularly everyone who supported us – their contributions are now helping to improve cancer detection and diagnosis to save lives at Kettering General.” "We have just launched our 2019 challenge which will once again be a coastal walk, but this time will be a through the night walk and in beautiful Cornwall. We are always keen to attract new people to our events, so if you like walking and would like an amazing weekend, with beautiful scenery and an opportunity to help others who are fighting for their lives, please go to our web site www.cancerbrowndog.co.uk where you can get more information and register. This year we are offering an early bird payment offer and the opportunity to spread the cost over 6 months".

Carrie’s Confidence Comeback
can eat ALL this food and you’re telling me I’m going to lose weight?’ By the end of the talk Carrie was buzzing and was so excited to start with this new eating plan.
A slimmer who transformed her life by losing 3 stone 3lbs is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too.
Carrie recalls, "We sat in on IMAGE therapy, where we go around each member one by one and discuss how their last week went. This reassured me that there is no embarrassment or judgement and your actual weight is never shared to the group. We only discuss gains, losses, maintains and overall weight loss."
Article written by Carrie Muggleton
Carrie Muggleton joined a Slimming World group in Tamworth 2 years ago and lost 3 stone 3lbs in 13 months and reached her target. She then revised her Personal Achievement Target and is now only a few lbs away from achieving it. Carrie has now trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Now she is opening her own group in Thringstone at the Charles Booth Centre on Saturdays at 8.30am. The latest government figures reveal that around ¼ of adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to 1/3. Carrie says her new role has never been more important and she cannot wait to help her local community with their weight loss goals. She says,"Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing over 3 stones and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to their target." "Support is really the most important thing, I couldn’t have lost 3 stones without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own consultant and group. Like a lot of slimmer’s, I had tried losing weight many times before by following various diets but they were never sustainable because I always got tired of the restrictions they imposed. Although I lost the weight on these diets, it soon came back on, plus a little extra each time. I’d come to terms with the idea that I’d always struggle with my weight and has convinced myself that I was happy as I was." "When my friend asked if I’d like to join Slimming World with I wasn’t sure, although I had seen her success with Slimming World after her first pregnancy, I was not convinced it would work for me. Nevertheless, after some hesitation, I said ‘YES’." Carrie recalls being very nervous on that first night and thought she was going to feel embarrassed when she stepped onto those scales for the first time. She says the thought of being around so many new people almost resulted in her not going, but knew she could not let her friend down. To Carrie’s surprise she remembers how they were both welcomed into the group with open arms and everyone was really friendly. Even when she was filling in her New Member form she still thought ‘I’m not going to be able to do this’, ‘I like food too much’, ‘I’m going to be hungry’, ‘What if I fail’, ‘I can’t cook’, ‘What if I don’t lose any weight’. As soon as she had the new members talk with her Consultant all she could think was ‘WOW, I
It was now time to face the scales. Face the music. Face my fears. "I wanted to cry! I wanted the ground to open and swallow me whole! I had been in such denial about my weight gain over the last few years, and kept putting it down to my underactive thyroid and hormones" Carrie says she remembers thinking ‘I knew I’d put on weight and I was now at my biggest dress size to date but I was not expecting to be over 16stones’. Her Consultant could see that Carrie was feeling upset and so offered some very kind words of support, ‘That is the last time you’re going to see those numbers’. Carrie says those words have stayed with her throughout her journey and even says it to new members who she meets at group now. Seven days later Carrie returned to her Slimming World group for her Week 1 weigh in, she was not looking forward to it at all, and although she had stuck to the plan, she says that she could not see a difference when she looked in the mirror. "I was dreading my first weigh in, I’d filled in my food diary and I remember thinking there is too much food on here, I can’t possible have lost any weight eating all of this. I did, however, feel I had more energy since starting the plan, albeit only one week, so I told myself even if I haven’t lost any weight I still have a positive to take away with me." Carrie says that the members of the Social Team told her to take a deep breath and to step onto the scales where she was ready, this was her moment of truth and recalls not wanting to look at the numbers staring back at her. To Carrie’s surprise she has lost 4.5lbs in just 1 week, merely by making simple changes and cutting out certain fatty foods. Carrie says, "The eating plan is so easy to follow and has become part of my everyday life. I’ve finally found a way to lose weight without starving myself. Slimming World really has changed my life. I still enjoy the odd takeaway as a treat, and I still have a glass of wine (or two!), but it’s all in moderation. If I have a particularly indulgent day / evening I just make sure I’m straight back on plan the next day. I’m not the best cook in the world, I thought I’d have to be good at cooking, or at least enjoy cooking, to make Slimming World friendly meals, but that just isn’t true. I love a jacket potato with homemade Chilli accompanied by salad, or a yummy tomato pasta dish. As for my sweet tooth, I still have to satisfy it, usually with a yoghurt or a piece of fruit or a glass of sugar free squash. Built into the Slimming World plan are Syns. We can have up to 15 a day on Extra Easy, so it really is easy to allow yourself a little treat."
Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat, becoming more active is important too. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people (many of whom who have unpleasant experiences of being forced to take part in activity at school) how they can build activity into their daily routines without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. Everything counts, from walking, to vacuuming, to washing the car or taking the stairs instead of the lift. Carrie explains that she was once very fit and healthy and was either at the gym, attending fitness classes or jogging, but since the weight increased she lost her confidence and consequently stopped doing these things she once loved. She says, "I fell out of love with the gym and I didn’t want to go jogging anymore, I just felt so uncomfortable with how I looked, and of course lack of exercise meant that the weight crept back on little by little, so I was stuck in another vicious cycle with myself. After losing 1 stone 7lbs I thought about starting walking again, but I would have to do it with someone else. My friend then suggested we go to Dovedale one Sunday and tackle Thorpe Cloud, I thought it sounded OK so without any hesitation I agreed. All I’ll say is I did it, it was a struggle and I had to fight my own fears to conquer it but I did it. This spurred me on to start training for a 5K Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research UK, a charity very close to my heart. I had done the 10k years ago when I was at my fittest so I had no reason to doubt myself doing half that distance. I did it in just under 40 minutes, that may seem quite a long time to some people but for me it was a huge achievement. More importantly, I went to the event on my own! Yes, OK, there was 1000s of people there on the day taking part but I wasn’t part of a group or even a duo, this was me, the new me, facing challenges on my own, something I’d only dreamed of doing again." Carrie no longer feels the need to wear baggy, shapeless clothes every day, although she does admit she still likes her ‘comfies’ when relaxing at home. She even went to a fancy dress party in some very tight leggings last Christmas and says it didn’t bother her once about what she might look like or what others may think. Carrie has more energy, something she openly admits she struggled with when she was carrying the extra weight, and now loves that she is able to play and run around after her Niece, Nephews and twin God-Daughters. Rich Greene who runs Slimming World’s Ashby group and is Carrie’s Team Developer says, "Slimming World Consultants are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. With Carrie’s experience of being a successful Slimming World Member and with her kind and warm personality and a great sense of humour I just know that she’ll be an amazing support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight." Slimming World really has changed Carrie’s life, it’s given her that confidence back and has led her to becoming a new Consultant and opening a brand new group in her local area. Carrie’s Slimming World group will be held at the Charles Booth Centre every Saturday at 8.30am from 26.01.2019. For more information or to join Carrie’s group either pop along on 26.01.2019 or call her on 07875 739979.

Cllr Wyatt said, “By utilising land within the town centre for housing you are reducing its potential to encourage large commercial companies into Coalville. We need a cinema and more leisure facilities in our town not more housing. It’s absolutely ridiculous using land that could potentially help to regenerate our once thriving town. The council need to get a grip with the decline of our High Street, and work with local businesses and residents so we can put a plan together that finally bring a much needed train station to Coalville which will benefit everyone. More housing is not the answer. The only people who benefit from the Tories current short sighted policy is the large building companies who are only interested in profit and not the interests of the residents.”

London Road Cemetery Improvements Starting To Take Shape Cllr Michael Wyatt who secured funding for a local project to recognise those who lost their lives to protect our way of life is now seeing the idea come to fruition. The cemetery will be improved in a number of ways with a wildlife area with a wildflowers, additional seating and a notice board with information about those who have been laid to rest in the cemetery who have contributed to our society. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “It’s so important we not only protect this area but also make sure that local people can learn about our local residents who have a valuable story to tell, and should never be forgotten.” This project is being financially supported by the Coalville special expense area and Bardon Aggregate.
The outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection is excellent and a testament to the commitment, skills and hard work of our exceptional staff and the support of our governors, Trust and families. Our pupils are outstanding and deserve the praise that has been heaped on them. We are determined to build on the successes achieved to date and to continue to deliver the quality of learning experience that will ensure our pupils are fully prepared for life in the 21st century. County Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk
Sitting in reception just before Christmas, idly reading the notices, I spotted the one that advises customers to be polite to our North
West Leicestershire District Council staff. Such notices don’t always
stop people from being rude. It isn’t easy to keep your temper when you feel frightened or frustrated. Officers at both our Councils do
a tremendous job, housing the homeless, protecting children from
domestic abuse, supporting troubled families, finding emergency social care for elderly relatives after a fall. The ‘customer’ in this situation isn’t always patient. They are often scared and sometimes desperate. In
arrears with Council tax or rent, our officers may seem like the enemy, making a hard time even more difficult. Unfair Funding
With the festivities over, it isn’t just Council customers who are worried about how to make ends meet. Both Councils are reviewing their
budgets and working out how to manage. The Government have been too busy with Brexit to sort out fairer funding for Councils. The long-
promised review of Social Care funding has been kicked into the long
grass. The Government have stopped giving Councils any support out
of general taxation. There are more frail older people needing our help, more families falling apart, more children being taken into care and more homeless on our streets.
With no help coming from a distracted Government, the County Council will be looking to you, the taxpayers, to stump up another 3.99% on
your rates. ‘Ouch!’ I hear you say. It’s not as if wages have gone up now, is it? With another gap in your budget to fill, you might decide to work longer hours to make up the shortfall, but that isn’t so easy. Employers have that, paying the minimum wage 16hrs a week, they can get away without paying National Insurance. Only one out of every forty jobs created since 2010 is full time.
The Banality of Universal Credit
Up until recently Councils were able to help unemployed people with
disabilities by paying a proportion of their Council Tax. But even here, out of touch Westminster politicians have managed to make things
harder for residents and Councils alike. If a worker with a disability is unfortunate enough to lose their job and go on Universal Credit, the
DWP now calculates how much they are allowed to earn before they
pay their full Council Tax bill. As far as the DWP are concerned, there is no need for Councils to offset additional income for workers with disabilities. This can mean Council Tax going up by as much as £50
a month as income goes down by £40. Thanks to Universal Credit, if
someone with a disability does find another job, they won’t be able to
claim Working Tax Credit either. No wonder some people arrive at the
Council reception desk anxious and angry. In midwinter a budget deficit of £90 or more a month can mean the difference between heating and eating for some of our most vulnerable residents.
I am glad to say that, while I was sitting there, before Christmas, I saw only the utmost kindness from our officers. One satisfied customer,
getting up from a long conversation told the officer, loudly so the whole waiting room could hear, that they had ‘made her day’. It isn’t going
to be easy for our staff to keep customers happy in 2019, as more and
more people with disabilities discover the cruel assumptions underlying Universal Credit. It won’t be easy explaining to vulnerable people why their local Council is no longer allowed to support them.

MP Andrew Bridgen
M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk As you are no doubt aware, last month Conservative Members of Parliament held a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister. It was with a heavy heart and in sorrow not anger that I voted that I “did not have confidence” in the Prime Minister. This is a decision which has drawn both praise and criticism, and it is not one I reached lightly. I would like to explain why I felt it was necessary. Although I did not vote for Theresa May in the leadership election of 2016, I was open minded about her premiership and had faith in her ‘Brexit means Brexit’ outlook following the EU referendum. I have often said and believe that being in the European Union is like being pregnant, you either are or you are not. There was a time when the Prime Minister agreed with this view, indeed in her 2017 Lancaster House speech, The Prime Minister stated we should be looking at ‘Not partial membership of the European Union, associate membership of the European Union, or anything that leaves us half-in, half-out. We do not seek to adopt a model already enjoyed by other countries. We do not seek to hold on to bits of membership as we leave.’
Thinking of moving?
The Prime Minister also stated at Lancaster House ‘I know my emphasis on striking trade agreements with countries outside Europe has led to questions about whether Britain seeks to remain a member of the EU’s Customs Union. And it is true that full Customs Union membership prevents us from negotiating our own comprehensive trade deals.’and in addition she stated ‘I do not mean that we will seek some form of unlimited transitional status, in which we find ourselves stuck forever in some kind of permanent political purgatory. That would not be good for Britain, but nor do I believe it would be good for the EU.’ As soon as the Chequers proposals came out in the summer, I could see that the Prime Minister could not possibly deliver on her Lancaster House speech and we were heading for trouble. The DUP, who we rely on to deliver a majority in the House of Commons would never accept a deal that treated Northern Ireland differently. It was actually at this point that I put in a public letter of no confidence, not in the expectation of an immediate vote, but to register my disapproval of the proposals and their future pitfalls in the hope that the Prime Minister would change her policy. David Davis and Boris Johnson resigned on the same basis and in spite of this, the Prime Minister ploughed on.

It pays to be with Your Move
On the basis of the Prime Minister’s own words, I cannot possibly sign up to a Withdrawal Agreement with a backstop that could well leave us in the permanent purgatory of vassal status, as a colony of the EU, taking rules from Brussels over which we have no say. To reiterate this problem of the backstop, it would stop us from being able to strike trade deals with non-EU countries, as it would bar us from controlling our tariffs and regulations. Without control in these areas, we would be useless to any future prospective trading partners.
CARERS
With regards to the UK-EU trading relationship, the backstop would create a climate which lends itself to continued EU belligerence. The EU would have no incentive to make concessions in future trade negotiations. Effectively keeping U.K. citizens as a captive market for overpriced EU goods for ever. For months, I and colleagues have warned that this deal cannot get through the Commons and would leave a legacy to the Prime Minister’s successor in negotiations which is far worse than the one she inherited from David Cameron. The weakness of our current position is a result of decisions made by the Prime Minister. From day one, I and many colleagues advised that we should be preparing for no deal and show the EU that we are serious about leaving without a deal, but would prefer to leave with one. Given the current difficulties in the Eurozone with slowing growth in the EU, we would have had a lot more leverage. I was told when we started negotiations with the EU we were paying the so called “divorce bill” of £39bn for a free trade deal, under the deeply flawed Withdrawal Agreement we would actually be paying this huge amount of taxpayers money just to “talk about” a future trade deal ! Because of the errors she has made in the last two years, the EU are refusing to budge on the agreement despite the Prime Minister’s pleas. So faced with an unacceptable agreement, a Prime Minister who has failed to heed the advice of those who actually believe in Brexit, who the EU are no longer listening to and whose agreement will probably lose the support of the DUP without whom, we cannot pass legislation in Parliament. I decided I had no alternative but to register a vote of no confidence, and although the Prime Minister has won the motion, I am afraid that as far as the situation goes, nothing has changed.
