Belvoirdale Primary School Pupils Get Creative With Clock Tower Standing at about 21 meters (68 feet) tall Coalville’s Grade II Clock Tower is constructed of enough bricks, that when laid end to end they would extend to nearly 13 km (eight miles) – the distance from Coalville to Loughborough! This is just one of the many amazing facts that pupils at Belvoirdale Primary School have been finding out as part of their investigation into the town’s iconic war memorial and surrounding Memorial Square. The two-week long learning exercise, which kicked off on 4 June, is part of North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Clock Tower and Memorial Square project which has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to engage the younger generations with learning about the Clock Tower, in parallel to vital restoration works which are taking place over the coming months. The education initiative has been backed by members of Coalville Heritage Society who have worked with Belvoirdale Primary Head Teacher, Richard Dax, to develop a programme of lessons that use archive materials to tell the story of the Clock Tower and illustrate how Memorial Square has changed over the years.

During their field trip, pupils were handed a letter written by Bev Smith, the Chief Executive of North West Leicestershire District Council, challenging them to generate new ideas and fresh plans for the area surrounding the Clock Tower.

Grace Wyatt, nine, said of the site visit: “It was fun being out of the classroom and looking at the old pictures. It’s really important we learn about the Clock Tower, as it’s a big feature of our home town. Learning happens everywhere you explore.”

A site visit on 6 June provided an opportunity for pupils to compare old photographs and maps of the Square with the present-day site. They learnt about the oldest building in Coalville, The Red House, "as well as ‘the many days sliding’ on the pond, used when frozen as an ice skating rink, which was situated near the seating area".

The pupils then worked in the classroom to reimagine the design of Memorial Square, taking into account responses to a school survey, which revealed that local people strongly value the Clock Tower as a means of commemorating our local war heroes.

The children presented their designs and arguments for retaining the Clock Tower, to Bev Smith, CEO of North West Leicestershire District Council at the Council Chambers on Monday 18 June. The children’s designs will feature in a touring exhibition about Coalville’s memorials, set to launch in the autumn. Many of the children’s ideas involved improving the square for everyone to use – including better seating, events and even restoring a pond for ice skating in the winter and feeding the birds in the summer! The project team would love to hear from anyone who has information relating to the Clock Tower or war memorials in and around Coalville; or a story or memory about a person, event or business associated with Memorial Square. Please email: history@ memorialclocktower.org.uk or call Tel: 01530 229690 You can find out more about the Clock Tower and Memorials project at www.choosecoalville.co.uk/ coalville-clock-tower-project/project-news

Two Redgate Rabbit ‘Bonded Pairs’ Need New Homes Currently at Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary near Coalville, LE67 9PW, there are two lovely bonded pairs of rabbits – two black and two a shade of creamy grey. The black pair are siblings and have never been apart: they must be re-homed together. The ‘creamy grey’ pair are mother and daughter and they are very special; the mother is nearly blind and her daughter cares for her and shows her where the food and water are. If you can, please consider giving these adorable rabbits a permanent home, with plenty of space and an outside run, and a regular supply of dandelions. Call into the Sanctuary any day of the week between 12 noon and 3.30pm; email redgate@ mail.org or phone 01530 243 925. If you could help them to find a new life, there are four rabbits who would be very happy.

Facebook Pictures Betray Benefit Cheat Who Jetted Off To Lanzarote, Cyprus And Spain A benefits fraudster spent tax payers money on lavish holidays abroad while sitting on almost £400,000 in three bank accounts. Teresa Hardy, 48, of Sunnyside Estate, Ibstock, appeared in Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 7th June, to plead guilty to dishonestly claiming council tax reduction and fraudulently receiving further discretionary payments. Hardy started claiming Council Tax support from North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) in April 2013 on the basis of having no other income other than the employment and support allowance she received.

PHOTO: Belvoirdale Primary School pupils left to right, Casey-May Carr, Kacper Gorski and Yazmin Taylor-Beck with the art board they have designed for Coalville Park.

Coalville Events To Display Children’s Art In The Park Designs Children from 13 schools across Coalville will see their artwork on display after being challenged by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC). The youngsters have been designing, drawing and writing on large boards under the theme of Choose Coalville.

Over the five year period Hardy received £3931.23 in council tax reduction benefit.

The NWLDC project has been generously supported by James Latham, who donated 27 wooden boards to the schools on which the children have produced their designs. All of the boards are being put on display in Coalville Park for everyone to enjoy.

Hardy went on to claim additional discretionary ‘hardship’ payments of £557 and £218 in 2014 and 2015 respectively due to her income being so much lower than her outgoings.

All of the schools have produced different boards and have been encouraged to get as many children involved as possible. Belvoirdale Primary managed to get every student involved in their board that features Coalville Memorial Clock Tower, which is currently undergoing essential maintenance and renovation work.

NWLDC officers became suspicious in August 2017 and launched an investigation into Hardy’s claims, which had now led to payments over a four year period. They discovered three bank accounts showing a total balance of £374,833 and took to social media to find further evidence.

James Latham is the UK’s biggest independent timber and panel products distributor and has just opened a new 55,000m2 depot at Optimus Point in Glenfield. Latham’s played a crucial role in making the project happen by providing the boards for the children to work on.

There they found evidence on Facebook of the defendant enjoying holidays in Belgium, Lanzarote, Cyprus, Tunisia, France and Spain during the overpayment period. The search also revealed Hardy as being the owner of a business called Doodle Mania and a website advertising her as an artist. ‘Exceptional circumstances’ regarding Hardy’s health saw magistrates’ hand her a three-year conditional discharge. A collection order was made which will see Hardy pay the council’s costs of £1,812, while the overpayments are also to be paid back.

The background to their design in made up of blue paint fingerprints from every child, with the tower in the forefront showing the past, present and even the future of the tower, as the children see it.

Casey-May Carr, aged 11, is a pupil at Belvoirdale Primary School. She said: “It’s been really exciting and really enjoyable. We’ve been working on it for a long time but we’re really happy with how it looks. It shows the Coalville Memorial Tower in the past, the present, and how it could look in the future and we’ve had everyone in the school working on it. I’m definitely going to see it in Coalville Park when it’s been moved there.” Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC said: “Our huge thanks to Latham Timber for helping to make this project happen through their sponsorship and to all the school’s that have taken part. It is really important children living in and around Coalville understand the town’s heritage and history, and feel proud of it. I can’t wait to see all the boards on display in Coalville Park.” Chris Sutton, Managing Director at James Latham, said: “We were delighted to sponsor this project and it’s great to hear how much the children have enjoyed being a part of it. We feel it’s really important to support our local communities, and we’re proud to have worked both with the schools and NWLDC who have both done an amazing job.” Richard Dax, head teacher at Belvoirdale Primary School, said: “Learning about Coalville plays a big part in our curriculum. We believe that children should have pride in their heritage and use it to plan a better future for themselves and their town.”

Kats Antiques Appears On Celebrity Antiques Road Trip For The Second Time Kats Antiques was delighted to be asked if they would like to appear on another series of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. Back in 2016 Singers Tony Christie and Jimmy Osmond came to visit the store where they found many great antique bargains. Benidorm star and Loose Women panellist, Sherrie Hewson along with antique expert Tim Medhurst visited the store on Friday 15th June. Marie Davenport said "Everyone was lovely, the team and crew and we had so much fun! I'm a big Benidorm fan too." The episode will be shown on BBC Two later on this year.

5 Tips For A Magical Unicorn Party From Timmy @ PartySaveSmile.co.uk Hi guys….Timmy again from PartySaveSmile.co.uk here, I hope you all enjoyed last month’s article about Unicorn party trends! What theme took your fancy? This month we are looking at a few Top Tips to make your Unicorn party totally magical! You are at that point where you have decided what Unicorn Theme is right for your party – you have a list of the supplies you are going to need to cater for your guests – now for the fun stuff, the added sparkle. At PartySaveSmile.co.uk we are often asked by our customers for some inspiration, extra party ideas and finishing touches, at the moment for Unicorn parties in particular… so, I thought I would share a few with you! Here are a few top tips for you to ensure your party guests have a magical time at your child’s party: 1) Create Rainbow Balloon Tails! Why not transform even the simplest plain coloured balloon into a Unicorn Rainbow Themed Balloon Tail! You will need several colours of Balloon Ribbon (Yellow, Pink, Red, Green and Blue are most popular). All you need to do is cut lengths of the different colours of ribbon and tie the lengths to the neck of the balloon, where you knot it! If you are feeling brave you could event cluster a few Balloons together and hang one Rainbow coloured tail from each cluster! How’s that for a Magical Tip!? 2) Use Marble Effect Balloons Another simple way to achieve this look is to use some Marble patterned balloons that are rainbow colour themed, they look great! If you ensure you get enough of these for one per guest, you could even give your guests a piece of the Unicorn Rainbow to take home with them and let the magic carry on when they get home. 3) Unicorn Rainbow Crepe Streamers Create your own Unicorn Backdrop using Crepe Streamers, attach them together to make a backdrop for your party. All you need to do is choose your colours and cut the streamers to length, then fix them together with some tape! We have a great range of streamers on our website as well as some tape too! 4) Colour you Own Unicorn Favour Mug Provide your guests with a Colour Your Own Unicorn Mug to complete at the party, they can also then take this home as a keepsake to remember the magic at your party. They go great with our Unicorn Sweetie Cones, and look amazing alongside our Pre-Filled Unicorn party bags! You could even fill this with treats and favours too! Why not award a gift to the child whose mug is best coloured – this is a great activity to give you a breather when you need to get the next part of your party ready.

Whitwick Day Nursery Awarded Five Star Food Hygiene Whitwick Day Nursery, Coalville, has been awarded a five-star rating from environmental health. This award is given to establishments that are found to have exceptional hygiene standards. The food safety officer that conducted the inspection examined how hygienically food is handled and stored, the condition and structure of the building and how the business manages and records the steps it takes to ensure food is safe for the children in their care. Leanne Dexter, Nursery Manager, said: “Our kitchen team is over the moon to have achieved their five-star rating. They work hard to provide the very best standards and it is great to see all of their efforts recognised.”

Wyatt Condemns County Highways And Developers Over Building Site Entrance Off Grange Road Cllr Michael Wyatt has attacked the County Council Tory Bosses and developers diff creating an extremely dangerous entrance into a new building site off Grange Road in Hugglescote. Cllr Wyatt said, “I really don’t understand how the Tory Highway Bosses can agree to an entrance on a blind spot along Grange Rd. A five year can see that this is extremely dangerous and will only lead to people getting hurt or losing their life in an accident waiting to happen. If an accident does happen; which god forbid it will, I hope the officers responsible for taking the decision will be open to prosecution.”

Pall-Ex Warns Of Summer Traffic Chaos Around Ellistown HQ Pall-Ex has criticised Leicestershire County Council’s ‘inadequate’ and ‘risky’ road closure and diversion plans, which would cause major disruption for residents close to the Ellistown-based logistics firm. The haulage giant is against parts of the B585 closing for up to six weeks over the school summer holidays, due to work beginning on a new development at Mountpark Bardon. The work will divert up to 600 Pall-Ex lorries through Ravenstone and Ibstock every night and 100 every day during July and August, causing serious safety and congestion issues. Pall-Ex is now pressing the Council for a delay in works beginning while it focuses efforts on finding a solution to the situation, working with Mountpark Bardon to remove the need for diversions. Pall-Ex has estimated that the proposed 22-mile diversion will cost PallEx and its network members of SMEs £300,000 in fuel costs alone.

Wyatt Welcomes Action At Phoenix Green Cllr Michael Wyatt has welcomed the news that the District Council will be adding another couple of additional grass cuttings to the Phoenix area opposite the council offices, after it was reported it was becoming a complete mess due to the Tory Bosses at County Hall deciding to cut back on their responsibilities. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “Yet again the Tories have shown they don’t care about our Town. If it was Ashby I’m sure it would be another matter. Neglecting areas like the Phoenix Green only makes Coalville look untidy and neglected. The extra cost is very minor compared to the cost of people seeing a very untidy area when travelling through our Town. It really is time the Tory County Council Bosses got a grip and realised that cut backs only create greater problems, and it sends a strong message that they don’t care about our Town.”

Kevin Buchanan, Group managing director, comments: “Our immediate concern is one of safety for local residents. We want to minimise disruption and congestion, and we hope the Council will respond to the needs of the local community. We are critical of the Council for issuing a license for this work without consultation; the scale of the disruption makes its two-week notice period completely inadequate. This risky work is due to take place during the school summer holidays, which we believe is unsafe, and these villages are not built to take the traffic levels that this diversion will create. We’ve engaged with the Council at every level to try and mitigate this situation and have put our plans to protest on hold while we liaise with Mountpark Bardon. We’re now calling on the Council to halt the required road closures until a proper consultation with local residents and local businesses has taken place.” Pall-Ex Group was formed by renowned entrepreneur Hilary Devey CBE in 1996 and is an award-winning network of quality hauliers, which collaborate to deliver leading palletised freight distribution services throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. With its headquarters and central UK hub located right at the heart of the Midlands, Pall-Ex has grown phenomenally since its inception in 1996.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service.

Cloudy2Clear GUARANTEE All Customers That An Average Quote Will Take No Longer Than 20 MINS!!!

Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that

obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Coalville & Hugglescote areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
