Coalville Through To Next Bidding Round For Future High Streets Funding Article by NW Leicestershire District Council
North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has been selected as one of fifty local authorities that are through to the second round of the Future High Streets Fund, which could see up to £25 million allocated to the regeneration of Coalville town centre. The £675 million Future High Streets Fund has been set up by the Government to support and fund local areas’ plans to make their high streets and town centres fit for the future. The regeneration of Coalville is a corporate priority for NWLDC, which has seen over £2.3 million invested or allocated since 2015, and future plans including a new indoor and outdoor market, a redesigned public space in Marlborough Square, new events and an extension of its business frontage grants scheme, as well as a £23 million leisure centre. The scale of the funding offered by the Future High Streets Fund would be significant for Coalville, which is the only place in Leicestershire to be shortlisted, with local authorities invited to put together bids for up to £25 million. The council will now be allocated funding by the Future High Streets Fund to develop a full business case for submission later this year. It will work with organisations and businesses in the town to put the bid together. The Government has not yet confirmed when the secured funding will be announced. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “Coming off the back of the news that the Belvoir Shopping Centre now has new owners and on top of our firm plans for the town, this is really good news for Coalville. We now have a lot of hard work ahead of us to showcase Coalville and how the town could benefit from an injection of Government funding. We’ve already shown that we are committed to the future of Coalville town centre, with our dedicated investment and our work with private investors. We hope that the Government will look at our bid and allocate funding that will make a real difference.” MP Andrew Bridgen added: “I have discussed this with Jake Berry, who is the minister leading this project, and I am delighted that Coalville has been chosen today as one of the 50 places nationally to receive funding of up to £150,000 to work up their proposals for the next phase. I offer my congratulations to councillors, officers and everyone involved in the successful expression of interest. This is another example of how we are ensuring North West Leicestershire is on the map when the Government allocates funding.”

Whitwick and District U3A is a thriving and friendly group with a wide variety of Interest Groups. The U3A is a self-help organisation for retired people where learning and social activities can be enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere. The General Meeting provides an ideal opportunity to chat to existing members and see the options available. Everybody wants to protect their assets for the benefit of their family and loved ones. We are all motivated to provide for our children throughout their lives and want what is best for them. Many people will think about or draft a Will hoping to ensure that the assets that they have worked hard for, are passed on to their children and chosen beneficiaries after their death. However, a Will can only dispose of the assets that you own at the date of your death and if the value of these have decreased during your lifetime, there will be little if anything left for your beneficiaries to inherit. Property Protection Trusts (Life Interest Trusts) can only be created while both partners are alive. Normally with couples the property is divided 50/50, though these percentages can be different. Upon the first death, their share of the property is placed into the Trust to be administered by the Trustee. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary and this would normally be the surviving children of the deceased. The deceased’s share in the property is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so even if the surviving partner remarries or goes to a care home. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving the surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of the life. A clause can be added for the Trustees to have access to the capital at their discretion. There are also other Will Trusts available depending on your circumstances (i.e. Discretionary Trust Wills) Lifetime Living Trusts are specifically designed to protect your assets for you during your lifetime. Giving you the peace of mind that your estate can be passed on securely and intact to your loved ones, after your death. After your death, the Trust continues to work to protect your assets for your beneficiaries. The Trust can continue to hold the assets safely within it or pay them out to the specified beneficiaries. The Trust is extremely flexible after your death and has the potential to continue protecting your family for 125 years from the date it was created. That means that all the benefits described in this document can not only protect you and your children but can also protect your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What are the main reasons for wanting to create a trust? • Your wishes to be specifically set out during your life • To prevent any claims on your estate under the Inheritance Act 1975 (Provision for Family and Dependants) • To reduce probate costs upon your death • To provide for beneficiaries who require assistance • To protect the trust assets from passing to future spouse or partner before/or after your death • To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should you die or no longer live in property • To provide the trustees to rent property immediately after your death or if you no longer live in property • To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should they lose mental capacity (although creating Lasting Powers of Attorney is essential) Our trained Consultants/Estate Planners can assess your situation, to book an appointment in the comfort of your own home, please contact Kornerstone Wealth Protection/ Legal Services on freephone 0800 193 7377.

The History Of Aroma Therapy Article by Dianne Hook
What Kind Of New Age Mumbo Jumbo Is Aromatherapy? Is what a lot of people ask. Well let me explain. Aromatherapy has been around since ancient times, but not in the form it is now. Aroma therapy is at least 6,000 years old as aromatic plants were used by the most ancient civilisations. An Egyptian medical papyrus thought to date from 1555 BC contains remedies for various illness and application methods similar to those used today in Aroma therapy today. The word Aroma therapy has two parts Aroma - meaning smell or scent and therapy meaning treatment. The Egyptians would burn Frankincense as an offering to their sun god in the morning and Myrrh to their moon god at night. They would also do embalming using aromatics to preserve the flesh. The Egyptians would infuse plants in oils and use these fragrant oils for massages after baths. The Chinese used aromatic herbs and burned aromatic woods and Indians were also using aromatics in massage at this time. The Greeks also used aromatic oils medicinally and cosmetically, A Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides wrote a book called Materia Medica about her bal medicine and for 1200 years it was used as the western worlds standard medical reference. Many of the remedies are still used today in Aromatherapy. Aromatic substances were used in the bible, many times in the old and new testaments. Mary anointed Jesus feet with Spikenard, which was a very expensive perfumed ointment. The Romans took a lot of their medical knowledge from the Greeks and used and improved the ability of aromatics. After bathing they would be oiled and massaged using them. The Romans also started importing aromatics from East India and Arabia through trade routes. During the crusades the knowledge of aromatic oils spread to Arabia and the Far East. A Persian physician called Avicenna AD980-1037 is understood to have first used the process of distillation to distil essence of rose. Aztecs were known for their plant remedies and aromatic oils and the North American Indians used aromatic oils and made their own herbal remedies. So you see they are pretty old. Fast forward a bit to the 19th Century where scientists in Great Britain and Europe began researching the effects of essential oils on bacteria. At this time a French scientist named Rene Maurice Gattefosse 18811950, who is considered one of the founding fathers of contemporary Aromatherapy and invented the word, began his research into the healing powers of essential oils after burning his hand in an explosion in the laband then applying lavender oil. He was impressed at how quickly his burn healed. In 1937 he published the book Aromathérapie: Les Huiles Essentielles, Hormones Végétales, a book about the antimicrobial effects of essential oils. Others at that time were researching and experimenting with essential oils such as Albert Couvreur and Dr Jean Valnet who realised the enormous value and potential of essential oils when using then to treat wounds during the war. Margaret Maury was a bio chemist who developed away to apply essential oils onto the skin with massage. What Does An Aromatherapist Do? I am so glad you asked that. • A qualified Aromatherapist is a trained expert in the different essential oils and how they are applied to help the mind, body and spirit. • An Aroma therapist will have an understanding of the body systems, anatomy and physiology, and how they work.
6 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
• An Aroma therapist will be able to use their knowledge to identify a specific or a number of essential oils or essential oil products that will best work together for your specific health and wellbeing needs. • An Aroma therapist will take a detailed medical history, to make sure that any essential oils you use are not contraindicated to a pre-existing condition or medication. An Aroma therapist will take care of the ’whole’ you and not just the presenting issue, looking at the underlying root cause and not just at the symptoms. • An Aroma therapist will Not diagnose any medical issue or condition, but will refer you to a qualified medical doctor. An Aroma therapist will Not take you off any prescribed medication but will work alongside to assist your health and wellbeing. • An Aromatherapist will Not pour dilute essential oils (essential oils are concentrated and potent) onto your skin, but will dilute accordingly in a carrier oil or cream for any treatment. • An Aroma therapist will work with you to devise a specific treatment plan, which could include advice, a massage, a topical cream or lotion(or bath product to take home), or an inhaled treatment during a time of meditation and relaxation. All will come with instructions for after care at home. What Are Essential Oils And Essential Oil Products? Great question. Well an essential oil is; • A concentrated liquid containing volatile (easily evaporated at normal temperatures) chemical compounds extracted from plants roots, stems, leaves, flower's and fruits. • It contains the essence of the plant, it's scent and flavour. They are generally extracted using distillation, often by steam. Other methods of extraction are expression, solvent extraction and cold pressing. • Essential oils are either inhaled or diluted and applied to the skin. The chemicals inessential oils can interact with your body in a number of ways. When applied to the skin they are absorbed and enter the blood stream and when inhaled they can stimulate parts of the brain known as the limbic system, which plays a role in your emotions, behaviours, long term memory and sense of smell. • An essential oil product is a cream, lotion, oil or wax containing essential oil. A Hydrosol is a product of the distillation process and contains the water soluble plant products left behind after the oil is removed, which are highly therapeutic. So I hope that has answered some of your questions about this new fangled hippy idea called Aromatherapy. Next month I will be talking about natural insect repellents, how to treat bites and after sun soothing skin care. I am a local aroma therapist with a mobile practice covering Loughborough and surrounding villages. Find me on Facebook at Nature Aroma Therapies.

Give Hayfever The Heave-Ho Article by Rebecca Alder
Bhangra-Inspired Fitness Class, Returns To Loughborough Article by Reema Bhakri
For many the warmer weather will come as a welcome relief, but if you suffer with hayfever - and one in five of us does - you may not want to hang up your hanky just yet. An allergic reaction such as hayfever can be best explained as an excessive reaction to a normally harmless substance. Avoid dairy foods as they cause mucus formation that can exacerbate hayfever symptoms, and keep your intake of refined sugar low. Do stock up on quercetin-rich foods. Found naturally in apples (with the skin on), red onions, capers and black tea, quercetin is welldocumented for its antihistamine activity. Luffa operculata taken twice daily two weeks before your usual symptoms begin can help with sneezing, blocked and runny noses. It is usually teamed with Galphimia glauca, which can be especially useful for reducing eye irritation. Pollinosan Hayfever Tablets from A.Vogel contain both and are non-drowsy so will not affect your ability to drive or use machinery. A nasal spray is also available for immediate relief. If your eyes are particularly sensitive, Euphrasia (in the form of eye drops) can help. Finally, stay one step ahead of your pollen-shaped foe by checking prevailing winds and pollen counts. Did you ever think you could get fit with a class that combines bhangra style dance moves with a series of fast paced compound exercises? Look no further! The latest Bhangra-inspired fitness class, Bhangrablaze , that has taken the Midlands by storm in Derby, Birmingham, Wolverhampton has now recently opened in Loughborough, giving participants a taste of traditional Bhangra routines and combining it with powerful exercises into an hour-long calorie-burning session. Accompanied to the beat of the latest bhangra music featuring an instrument known as the dhol, a traditional Indian drum, this exercise class will have participants leaving with more energy, positivity and most of all, blaze away calories without even noticing it. BhangraBlaze was founded in 2015 by Leicester resident Kirit Thakore and has quickly grown into a fitness trend on a national scale. Unlike other Bhangra classes BhangraBlaze is not a dance class but uses easy to follow ballistic movements, meaning that no prior dance experience is needed. With more than 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry, delivering sessions in martial arts, insanity, boxing, circuits, weights and high intensity interval training, Kirit has taught over x instructors who deliver Bhangrablaze classes across the UK. Reema Bhakri, Bhangrablaze Loughborough Instructor said “I have always loved Bhangra since I was a child and my love for it somehow got lost on the way as ‘normal ‘ life took over. Now almost 20 years later, married and with five beautiful children, I have rekindled my passion and truly feel amazing.” She continued, “By following the Bhangrablaze principles, I would love to get others to rekindle their own passion whatever that may be, be more confident, energised and happier with themselves. It is very important in this current mental health climate." “You have to be happier inside as well as on the outside” Reema runs her Bhangra Blaze classes on a Thursday at Charnwood College at 7pm. She also runs classes in Whitwick and Coalville and will soon be running more sessions in neighbouring towns. For more details contact reema.bhakri@bhangrablaze.com or @ getfitbhangrastyle.

Coalville’s own antiques roadshow
Don’t miss the chance to discover if you have treasure in the attic...
F
ROM Coventry to Cape Town, antiques expert Andy Elton has been putting a price on family heirlooms and forgotten relics for over 40 years... and now he’s coming to Coalville.
The founder of Bentley’s UK - which sets up shop in the Coalville - is just the man to make your dreams come true – or let you down gently. “A lot of people are very unsure as to the worth of their items, which may have been stored for years in cupboards, lofts, garages and even garden sheds,” says Andy. “Others are convinced they’re bringing something that’s worth a fortune. “You can open a box and know you’re not going to find anything of value. But they’re showing you something that is part of their heritage – you’ve got to be diplomatic.” On the other hand, Andy is in a position to break some very welcome news: “One gentleman had a Rolex Submariner watch, which had lain unworn in a cupboard since it was given to him by his uncle. He was amazed when I offered him £5000. “Then there was the time in South Africa when someone came along with a dusty bronze which turned out to be a rare work by the sculptor Anton Van Wouw – I valued that at £10,000.”
He’s always been interested in antiques and jewellery and has worked with two of the major auction houses in London and another in Nottingham. But he prefers to be his own boss. “I’ve travelled all over the UK and I regularly go to South Africa, meeting thousands of people along the way,” he says.
Andy prides himself on offering a fair price: “I treat people as I would want to be treated myself,” he says.
“You come across some wonderful stories; I love hearing about how grandad got his medals.
“Everyone wants to make a profit, but you’ve got to be honest.
“You never know what the day will bring – that’s why it’s such a lovely job. I’m a very lucky man. Hopefully I’ll be making someone in Coalville very happy!”
“I’ve got customers who have been coming to me for 15 years and others who have been referred to me by family and friends. I think that speaks for itself.”

New Owners For Coalville’s Belvoir Centre Article by NW Leicestershire District Council
After many years of ownership by asset management group Threadneedle, the Belvoir Centre in Coalville has new owners following its acquisition last week by Gylo, a private property investment unit trust. Specialist Property and Development Consultancy Lathdale has been appointed by Gylo to lend its retail expertise to improve the overall management of the shopping centre and also explore new opportunities. As part of the plans and to enable the purchase, North West Leicestershire District Council’s Cabinet agreed to sell the car park surrounding the Belvoir Centre to the new owners at a special meeting on Monday 10 June. Nick Harcus of Lathdale said, “We’re delighted to be working with both Gylo and North West Leicestershire District Council. We will be getting to work straight away on a proactive letting strategy for the currently vacant shops as well as looking at new investment and development options. We will keep local people and businesses fully informed as new initiatives happen.”

Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk
PHOTO: Left to right, Julie Summerton, Cllr Eynon and Cllr Legrys. We Had A Whale Of A Time! Were you at Coalville’s annual celebration? Picnic in the Park was particularly successful this year. Over 6000 people attended. Over 150 local children and young people performed. Over 600 people met with the NWLDC team to talk about district council services. Cllr John Legrys and I got a first look at the stackable bins the recycling team intend to test somewhere near you very soon. Despite all the fun and games no children got lost and all went amazingly well thanks to over 30 Council staff from 10 teams. My special thanks go to the Cultural Services team. While we were bopping to the bands, wandering inside a giant whale and popping a million bubbles created by Helter Skelter performers, council staff were clocking up over 250,000 steps. I bet their feet were sore! With A Little Help From Our Friends They do say that you should always leave the audience wanting more and, from Facebook posts afterwards, there is clearly an appetite for more events like this in the Park. It was marvellous to see so many people enjoying themselves with some of them using the adult gym and children’s play equipment during the event. I had a spot of nostalgia there. My son used to play on some of that equipment when he was a tot over twenty years ago. It is a tribute to local parents and their well brought up children that some of the kit has lasted so long. But it is looking decidedly shabby and surely it is time for a facelift? Thanks to some hard work and subtle negotiating Council officers, supported by local District Councillor John Legrys, have recovered some funding for play equipment from the misplaced MUGA (multi-use games area) on Lillehammer Drive. It isn’t enough to do a full-on playpark refurbishment though. But this is where you come in. The Friends of Coalville Park are now a properly constituted community group, supported by NWLDC and working closely with the Parks department. As a community group, the Friends can apply for funds such as ‘Awards for All’ and the ‘Big Lottery’. Imagine what we could do with some matched funding? Love Your Park? Then Get Involved! Keep Britain Tidy’s annual ‘Love Parks Week’ is 12-21 July 2019. This is our chance, as local residents, to show why Coalville Park deserves a Green Flag award and why it deserves more investment. The Friends of Coalville Park are at the heart of this campaign, but a heart is not much use without hands and legs and feet. Everyone who loves Coalville, whatever their skills or abilities, can join the Friends in supporting our beautiful town park. Have a look on Facebook and come along to their next meeting www.facebook.com/friendsofcoalvillepark

Could You Change A Child’s Life In 2020? Article by Jonathan Walters
We’re looking for volunteer host families who can offer a stable, loving temporary home for children whose lives are still affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leicestershire) is a registered charity that supports Belarusian children from disadvantaged social backgrounds who are still affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Every year we bring children from the most badly affected parts of Belarus to the UK for a month of recuperative care. During the visit, the children stay with a host family and undertake a programme of organised activities that gives them plenty of fresh air, friendship, essential health checks and above all the fun they so desperately need. We’re on the lookout for enthusiastic, committed families who can provide a stable, loving home for a vulnerable child that will be placed in their care for four weeks. Host families will need to have their own transport and ideally live within 30 minutes of the charity’s day centre, which is currently in Markfield. John Buckby, Group Co-ordinator for Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics) said: “Hosting a child is an incredibly rewarding experience and these visits do really change the lives of the children and the host families and volunteers that support them. The next visit is planned for the summer of 2020 but there is lots of organising before then, so it’s vital that we have host families in place by September 2019 to ensure we can commit to bringing these children, so desperately in need of our help, over to the UK.” If you think you can help, either as a host family or as a volunteer supporting the visits you can find more information on our website www. focc-westleics.org.uk or get in touch with our Group Co-ordinator, John Buckby, on 01455 285799 / 07738 324947 or by email at john.evolution@ btinternet.com

Cllr Michael Wyatt M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk
Wyatt New Chairman Of The Coalville Special Expense Working Party For The Coming Year Cllr Michael Wyatt has been appointed the new chairman of the Coalville special expense working party. Cllr Wyatt is a passionate and outspoken supporter for our Town, and he continues at every opportunity to fight for a better deal for Coalville. Cllr Wyatt has already started to make headway by initiating a formal events working group to look at bringing more events into the town centre to help local businesses, and to give local residents something extra to enjoy in Coalville which as sadly been lacking for a number of years. Cllr Wyatt said, “I’m eager to provide local people with the tools to be able to put on more events in the town for all ages. The council currently have a limited budget but after my intervention we have increased the budget for events in the town with an extra £5,000.” Good News - Oak Trees Off Cropston Drive Greenhill Saved Tory bosses scrap plans for housing and removal of oak trees off Cropston Drive after local Cllr Jake Windram, and Cllr Michael Wyatt told officers NO to cutting down the Oak Trees. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “Cutting down Oak Trees when their is a climate change emergency is absolutely ridiculous. We are delighted to see that at last a bit of common sense prevailed.” Good News Councillors Back Wyatt For More Funds For Christmas In Coalville Cllr Michael Wyatt proposed at the Coalville special expense meeting that an additional £2,000 be made available for more lights in Coalville. All members at the meeting voted to support the proposal. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “For the past three years the lights have been dreadful and it’s time they were upgraded. Unfortunately we still have one year left of the old contract but councillors agreed with me that we needed to spend additional money to help provide further lights to improve the ones currently being used. Next year we will be working to bring new lights which will hopefully improve our towns Christmas image which as been very poor.”

Council Tenants Move Into New Homes On Former Police Station Site Article by NW Leicestershire District Council
Tenants have started moving into 24 new homes in Coalville as North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) completes its latest phase of housebuilding. The former police station site in Ashby Road has been transformed into a mix of two-bedroom and three-bedroom homes, in addition to six one-bedroom flats. These affordable homes are now being rented to tenants from the council’s waiting list. In a nod to the site’s former use, the main road into the development has been named Kinghorn Close after Nancy Kinghorn, the first female police officer in Leicestershire who was based in Coalville. The homes are part of the council’s new-build programme aiming to provide around 30 new homes for rent each year – adding to its stock of around 4,300 council homes. The site sits next to the town-centre conservation area and as a result the street frontage design references the Victorian terraces that would have originally stood there. NWLDC began building council homes for the first time in almost 30 years back in 2017. Tenants have already moved into 17 new homes in Coalville and seven in Ashby-de-la-Zouch since the project got under way. The authority is working to increase its housing stock to meet demand, particularly properties that are in short supply in its current stock, such as smaller family houses and bungalows. The council housing waiting list currently stands at 610 households. The Ashby Road building project has been delivered in partnership with Countryside, one of the UK’s leading home builders specialising in place making and regeneration. Daniel Springthorpe and Iga Byczynska have moved into one of the new properties with their two children. Daniel said: “We were living in really quite cramped conditions and on the waiting list for a council home for around six months. When we heard the news it was absolutely fantastic, we couldn’t have asked for anything more and the council has been brilliant. We now have the space we need and there’s already a nice community forming with the neighbours.” Gavin Brooks and Carrianne Cuppelditch have moved in with their three children after previously being in a small two-bedroom home with nowhere near enough room for them all. Carrianne said: “When I heard the news I burst into tears. And to get a newly built house in such perfect condition is amazing. We’ve only lived here for a month and it’s already making a huge difference to our lives. There were four of us sleeping in one room previously but now we have this and we’re really grateful.” Councillor Roger Bayliss, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Customer Services at NWLDC, said: “We’re delighted with the progress we’re making with our new-build project and it’s great to see tenants moving in. We have a lengthy waiting list of people in need of affordable housing and it’s important we continue to be proactive in increasing our stock of housing in the district. Transforming this empty site on the edge of Coalville town centre also fits in with our Coalville regeneration priority – the development prevented an empty building from causing blight on the town, it brings more people into the town, and makes a positive addition to the Ashby Road part of town, which is a key gateway into Coalville.” The next phase of council home building will see seven houses and one bungalow built on the former Cocked Hat site on Cropston Drive in Coalville. Start on site will be this summer with completions expected to take place in spring 2020. The quality of the homes at the Ashby Road site has since earned Countryside a National House Building Council (NHBC) Pride in the Job Award, one of only 450 competing schemes out of 16,000 in the UK to receive this year.
