Council Doesn’t Muck Around After School Children Send Letters Children from a Coalville school hope that a new a bin and hand-drawn posters will stop irresponsible dog owners from throwing waste into their nature area. A number of understandably disgusted pupils at All Saints Church of England Primary School in Ashby Road, Coalville, wrote letters to North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) after they were plagued by dog muck problems.
PUBLISHED BY
In the handwritten letters they reported that they were to use parts of the school’s nature area due to dog waste bags being thrown over the fence from the path behind.

Soon after the letters landed on the council’s doorstep, its Street Cleansing Team was at the school talking with staff and pupils – resulting in the brand new bin for dog owners to use.

In her letter, Year Six pupil Pranita Rai, age 11, wrote: “Everybody knows that dog mess is not good for you since it can cause lots of different bad health issues. The best solution that I would recommend is to put in a dog mess bin to stop this problem.”

Ellie Kirk, age 11, wrote: “I think it is very unfair for all the people at All Saints because we are not allowed to use this part of our school nature area because of this problem.” Paul Coates, Waste Services Team Manager at NWLDC, said: “We listened to the children at All Saints and learned they were unable to visit their own nature area as a result of this issue. We got in touch with the school to discuss how we could help. As a result we installed a new litter bin. We anticipate the new bin will resolve the problem at this location. We’d like to remind dog owners of their responsibilities and that not cleaning up and correctly disposing of their pet’s waste is an offence. Dog owners should take their pet’s waste home with them to be disposed of in their own bin. Dog muck can also be disposed of in any litter bin and there is no excuse for failing to do this.” Sharon Williamson, Higher Level Teaching Assistant and Outdoor Learning Leader said: “Everyone at All Saints are both delighted and amazed at how quickly the district council responded to our request and we are all extremely grateful for their support. Our outdoor learning sessions have proved very successful in improving pupils’ selfesteem and to now be able to use the whole of the nature area is wonderful. Hopefully the new bin and posters will resolve the problem and make the public more aware of looking after the environment. Our pupils have learnt that by taking action, they can achieve the results they want.” The council already runs a Dog Watch initiative that has been set up using the influence of neighbourhood watch to target dog fouling in residential hot spot areas. Its aim is to deter dog owners from allowing their pets to foul by empowering the community to take matters into their own hands. This is done through the recruitment of volunteer coordinators who are kitted out with stencils, sprays, high visibility jackets, leaflets, ‘report it’ cards, window stickers, monitoring forms and signage. To get involved or find out more people can contact the Environmental Protection Team on 01530 454600.

Latest News From Charnwood Indoor Bowls Centre By Wendy Coley (Bowls Development Officer)
With all the current publicity about getting people more active and finding a sport in which everyone can participate I would like to tell you all about indoor bowls in Charnwood. But first a bit about our clubs history. We are situated in Browns Lane,Loughborough to the left hand side of the Leisure Centre. We are very proud that the club was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales on Thursday 26th April 1990. Her picture takes pride of place on our club's lounge wall.
I’ve Stopped Dieting For Good! Every New Year saw me making the same resolution – to lose weight. I’ve struggled with my weight since I was a child, when my Mum told me it was ‘just puppy fat’ and I’d lose it quickly with a bit more exercise and fewer sweets/biscuits. She was right, of course, but somehow, I always went back to eating those high sugar, high fat treats … and then when I went to university, the added ‘danger zone’ of alcohol joined them! Still, I was fit and could always lose the weight when I set my mind to it. Trouble was, each time, more weight seemed to go back on than I had lost. For years, I yoyo’d between a healthy size 12 and an unhappy, exhausted size 18. My wardrobe was stuffed full of clothes that I couldn’t wear – they were either too big or too small. In 2016, I made my usual resolution and joined a Slimming World group in Ashby. From the moment I walked in, it was a revelation: potatoes, rice and pasta were not forbidden. Not only that, I hardly had to weigh or measure anything! As a busy mum and teacher at the time, the thought that I wasn’t going to have to find extra energy to fiddle around counting calories was a bonus. The next delight was that I could prepare all my family favourite meals (even things like burgers and chips!) with just a little bit of adaptation. I wasn’t going to have to cook separate foods because I was ‘on a diet’. After the initial new member talk, I found that the other members were as helpful as my consultant – everybody was prepared to share tips and new recipes; everybody was so supportive and helpful. I knew this time I was going to succeed: this was not a diet, but a lifestyle, which was easily sustainable for good! In recent news, there has been a lot of talk about how various political parties plan to help with childhood obesity by curbing advertising of unhealthy foods – I have to admit to smiling wryly at that. Since I’ve been feeding my family Slimming World menus, they are all eating healthily, but more importantly have become aware of HOW to eat everything in moderation, without deprivation, but with the focus on nutritious foods for most of the time. In eight months, I lost nearly 2.5 stone and three dress sizes. I don’t have a super-model figure – I have more than that: I feel fitter and happier. I have so much more energy and best of all, I have a new career – I recently trained to become a Slimming World consultant and will be launching my very own group in Whitwick on Tuesday, 30th May at the Hall Lane Methodist Church at 7.30 pm. I can’t wait to get started helping other people to change their lives the way my consultant helped me to change mine!
Since then we have updated our facilities, including the lighting above the greens, and now have a superb 8 rink indoor bowls club as good as any in the Midlands. Indoor bowls is an enjoyable, rewarding sport that also offers great health benefits. It is a sociable activity for all ages from 10 to 100. As it is not dependent on strength or aerobic capacity it is a unique, multigenerational sport that men, women and children can enjoy playing together. Wheelchairs are available for disabled participants, as are aids for the visually impaired. How many other sports allow disabled people to play in the same team as the able bodied without any sporting disadvantage? Indoor bowls can be as social or competitive as participants require. We have purely social bowlers and also members who compete in county and national competitions. In April 2017 the Leicestershire
county indoor bowls finals were held at Charnwood Indoor Bowls club. There were many exciting matches and our club now boasts 4 county champions. For anyone interested in giving this superb sport a try we offer,by prior arrangement, a free initial session with coaching advice and bowls provided. You don't need any other equipment just wear comfortable clothes. For people who wish to continue there is free coaching every Sunday morning between 10am and 12 noon. If people wish to come on their own,or with a friend, to practice that is not a problem. However, there are also sessions on several days of the week where single bowlers can participate in bowls drives, where teams are allocated by picking a rink number. There are U3A groups,Women's Institutes and scouts amongst others who play regularly amongst themselves or in one of the many leagues or friendly matches that are organised by the club. We have a licensed bar in our lounge area and snacks are served in our sociable seating area. In fact our bacon cobs are legendary amongst other Leicestershire bowlers who visit the club to play in league matches! Please consider coming to have a look at what we have to offer and have a trial session in a warm, friendly welcoming atmosphere. We were all beginners once and remember that a caring smile makes all the difference. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Coalville & Hugglescote areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary, Coalville – Urgent Kitten Food Appeal
Whitwick & District Whitwick and District U3A will hold its next monthly General Meeting on Friday 16th June. For retired people, or those approaching retirement, this is a chance to discover the opportunities for new learning experiences and friendships within a local, thriving organisation. There are more than forty Interest Groups with something to suit most tastes.
Well, kitten season is now well underway. We have been very busy recently with our fundraising but as we all know, money doesn’t last long when the utility bills and vet’s bills start coming in. At the moment our major ongoing item of expense is kitten food (sachets) and kitten biscuits. (Our kittens will be ‘on view’ from mid-July). As at 23rd May we have twelve kittens under 5 weeks old – girls and boys, all different colours and patterns! They will grow up fast, and will soon be making demands on our feed-room stores. If you are able to donate some sachets of cat and kitten food, or donate money for us to purchase food – we, and the cats, would be hugely grateful. We are also always very pleased to receive your gifts of towels and cotton sheets. We recycle at Redgate, and when towels and sheets can no longer be used for bedding they are cut up and used as cleaning cloths. Visiting The Redgate Cats The kittens will not be ready for public viewing until July, but do come to see us – and the older cats – very soon. We have 4 beautiful pairs of bonded cats, and five lovely ‘lone’ cats still for re-homing and waiting for their forever home. And when the kittens are independent, their Mums will be looking for good homes too. Redgate Farm is based on the side of the A511, near the ‘Stardust roundabout’ – half way between Coalville and Markfield. Visiting hours are 11am – 3.30pm, every day. Telephone 01530 243 925 01530 230 455; or email: redgate@mail.org If you would like to meet the Redgate team and help us with our essential (and very varied) fundraising, please leave a message at the sanctuary for the fundraising Trustees – Jo and Jane. www.redgatefarmanimalsanctuary.co.uk

Miners Gala Makes A Comeback After three years the Miners Gala will be returning to Coalville at this year’s Picnic in the Park event on Sunday 25th June at Coalville Park. The last Gala was held in 2014 at Snibston Discovery Museum and attracted over 4,000 visitors and was organised by Leicestershire County Council Museums Service and the Leicestershire Area NUM. This year’s Gala is being organised by a committee made up of members from the Leicestershire Coal Industry Welfare Trust Fund (LCIWTF) and the Snibston and Coalville Preservation Group (SCPG) under the Chairmanship of Peter Smith. The Coalville Miners Gala will have a dedicated marquee at Picnic in the Park. In the Gala marquee will be displays from local horticulturalists, heritage groups and other local organisations. Picnic in the Park starts at 12.00 noon and around 12.30pm retired and ex-miners will parade onto the Park with the Leicestershire Area NUM banner and to the sounds of Desford Colliery Band who will be performing on the main stage from 12.15pm until about 1.00pm. Peter Smith welcomes any retired or exminer to join the short parade from Victoria Road playing fields into the Park and on to the Gala Marquee. If you wish to join in the parade please turn up on the day at 11.30am and ask for Bryan Hallam or Peter Smith at the Coalville Gala Marquee.
The speaker at June's meeting will be Ruth Coward with a presentation entitled "Ark at our Peter". This is Ruth's father's autobiography and the story of growing up in Loughborough in the 1930s and 1940s. The talk will be illustrated with old photographs and memorabilia which will no doubt foster many reminiscences amongst the audience. Ruth will also tell of how she came to write with her father after his diagnosis of Alzheimer's. To listen to Ruth and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David's Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. The U3A is a non-religious and non-political organisation: everyone is welcome. Also this month, you can call in at the U3A marquee, decorated in blue and yellow, at Coalville's Picnic in the Park on Sunday 25th June. Members will be there waiting to hand out information leaflets and chat about the benefits of belonging to the U3A. As always, the comprehensive website www.whitwicku3a.org.uk/ gives full details about Whitwick and District U3A.
The Leicestershire Coal Industry Welfare Trust Fund and Snibston & Coalville Preservation Group hope that the Coalville Miners Gala will be an annual event visitors to this year’s event will be asked for their views and comments about the format of the Gala and where it should be staged in future years. Peter Smith Chairman of the Coalville Miners Gala organising committee said “The Coalville Miners Gala is a chance for everyone to celebrate the mining culture, heritage and traditions that can be found in ex-mining communities. Coalville and the surrounding pit villages have a long history of mining. The mines may have gone but we must not allow the heritage to be forgotten. It is important that the miners and their families as well as the new people moving into the area and especially the young people remember those who worked and, sadly over the centuries, died in the industry”. The Coalville Miners Gala is on Sunday 25th June from 12.00noon until 5.00pm and is part of Picnic in the Park at Coalville Park. Admission to Picnic in the Park and the Coalville Miners Gala marquee is free.

Coalville Colour Run Will Return For Second Year – Registration Now Open • Second Coalville Colour Run to take place on Sunday 17 September, 2017 • Registration for popular fun run now open at www.givingback.co.uk/coalville-colour-run.asp • 500 extra spaces up for grabs (total spaces: 1,000) It’s official – after enjoying huge success in 2016, the Coalville Colour Run is returning bigger and better than ever before. More than 500 people took part in the inaugural Colour Run last year raising £10,000 for charity in the process. The fun, colourful, fund-raising race will return on Sunday 17 September, 2017. Leicestershire-based charity Living Without Abuse is once more teaming up with North West Leicestershire District Council to organise the popular event and will again be the beneficiaries, with all funds raised going towards their work to support children and adults who have suffered from domestic violence in the Leicestershire area. The event is organised by Living Without Abuse and sponsored by North West Leicestershire District Council along with support from a number of local businesses. Registration is now open at www.giving-back.co.uk/coalville-colour-run.asp Anyone who would like to see what last year’s event was like can see the promotional video at www.nwleics.gov.uk/coalvillecolourrun Gina King, Head of Fund-raising at Living Without Abuse, said: “The Coalville Colour Run received a fantastic reception in 2016 and everyone who took part had a thoroughly enjoyable day. We want to go one better this year and hope to see even more entrants, and an increased fundraising total for our incredibly important charity. If you’re not running, but fancy getting involved, there are plenty of volunteering opportunities on the day – just get in touch. It really is a hugely fun family event that we encourage anyone to get involved in whether as a runner or a spectator.” Kay Greenbank, Head of Economic Development at North West Leciestershire District Council, added: “Our support for the Coalville Colour Run is part of our scheme to build confidence in the town. We want to bring more people into Coalville and showcase its accessible green spaces and great community spirit. We know some people were disappointed that they missed out this year, so have created more spaces and I hope people take the opportunity to get involved and join in with this brilliant family event.” The Colour Run is an approximately 5km course that will take place in and around the centre of Coalville, starting at the Market Hall car park, running alongside the precinct, over to Coalville Town Football Club, taking in Snibston Country Park and the Urban Forest, passing Memorial Square and finishing in Coalville Park. Four colour stations dotted around the route will blast runners with colour. Everyone (including those who haven’t done the run) is then invited to a finish line paint party in Coalville Park, including live music, various local business stalls, and food. Businesses that would like to sponsor the Coalville Colour Run are asked to contact Gina King on gina@lwa.org.uk
Provision For Cyclists Boosted In Coalville By North West Leicestershire District Council New bike racks installed by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) will help to make Coalville more accessible to cyclists, encourage people to visit, and promote healthy living. As part of the council’s Choose Coalville project, 19 new bike racks have been placed across four locations in the town. Four existing bike racks have been left in situ in Memorial Square. This will increase the numbers of racks available in Coalville, and has seen any outdated existing stands replaced. Funding for the new racks has come from NWLDC, with support from Leicestershire County Council, which has carried out the work to install them. Six new racks have been put in place outside the council offices on Whitwick Road, five on Belvoir Road at the entrance to the Belvoir Shopping Centre, two in Marlborough Square, and six outside Coalville Library. Barrie Walford, Business Focus Team Manager at NWLDC, said: “We wanted to improve our provision for cyclists in Coalville and the new racks provide a safe place for bikes to be stored while riders enjoy the town. As part of the Choose Coalville project
we want to make the town as accessible as possible by all means of transport - including by bike – and this is just one way of achieving that. It also encourages residents from the district to keep fit and healthy by riding into town – rather than travelling by other means of transport.” Chris Sidney, secretary of the Coalville Wheelers Cycling Club, said: “I think that anything that helps encourage more cyclists to ride into the town is a good thing. It is great in that it also encourages people to be fit and healthy by cycling rather than driving everywhere. We’re really pleased North West Leicestershire District Council is promoting cycling in the town by installing these racks. Coalville Wheelers is always looking to welcome new members of all abilities. Just visit us at our clubhouse on Sunday mornings in Top Road, or visit www. coalvillewheelers.org.uk” The Choose Coalville project, which launched in 2015, aims to build confidence in the town through positive collective action. The new bike racks are one of a number of schemes led by NWLDC. Coalville has many cycle paths, of which most link to National Cycle Route 52 - part of a cycling network which connects the town centre with Stephenson College, the community hospital and outlying villages. More details on cycle routes in and around Coalville can be found at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ cycle_routes

Students Step Back In Time To Shakespeare’s Era A backstage tour of the Royal Shakespeare Company was one of the highlights of a day trip to Stratford-upon-Avon for more than 85 students from Ibstock Community College. The Year 8 students also visited an interactive exhibition about the playwright, took part in a drama workshop with professional actors, and were given a Latin lesson at Shakespeare’s old school. Assistant principal Sophie Williams said: “The idea behind the trip was to give the students a real taste of Shakespeare before they move in to Year 9 and begin some serious study of his work. The students were all brilliant ambassadors for the college and were particularly impressed to be treading the same boards as David Tennant!”

Garden Screening
Bespoke Trellis
We’re finally seeing some sunshine and warmth after a long cold spring. My own garden is filling out nicely with lush foliage and plenty of colourful blooms. My boundary fences have had a spruce up with a fresh coat of paint and the privet hedges are looking smart after on early trim. Increasingly often I’m being contacted by home owners who are overlooked by neighbours and would like more privacy. I find that new build homes are often overlooked from all sides and can have as many as 5 neighbouring properties having a clear view into the garden and through windows. There are several options I recommend for screening in such circumstances. The style of the garden, level of maintenance required and the budget are all things I take into account when selecting the right option for a garden design plan.
Pleached Tree
Timber fencing and trellis: Typical low screening options which most of us have in the garden to surround our property. Usually they will provide screening from 3-6ft high and can be topped with additional trellis to give another 12-18 inches of height. ‘Off the shelf’ fencing/trellis is a cheap option and is relatively straight forward to erect. Bespoke Timber Screening: Where more height is required, free-standing timber screens can

be erected. Using sturdy posts, bespoke trellis work can be designed and attached to give a screen above existing fencing. The trellis work will allow some air flow so that buffeting winds do not cause the posts to move. Climbers can be encouraged to climb up to the trellis and give further screening as well as colour and interest. Pergolas: If adding height to the boundaries is not an option, then erecting a building such as a pergola can offer privacy within the garden itself. Clothed with climbers or with a suspended sail cloth, these will offer a secluded spot to sit and some shade from the summer sun. Hedges: Various plants can be used for hedging and often this is the most cost effective way of screening along a boundary. Shrubs such as Privet, Yew, Holly and Pyracantha will offer evergreen structure and privacy throughout the year. They will require trimming at least twice a year so they are not maintenance free. I avoid the use of Leylandii where possible as these can grow out of proportion and are unsightly when trimmed hard back. Trees: For those who need to add a tall screen to the garden without impacting on the boundaries, trees are a good option. I’m often asked for evergreen trees to screen neighbouring windows, belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk
but this poses a problem as many evergreen trees in the UK are either slow growing or will grow to be huge unmanageable specimens. I recommend well natured deciduous trees with a good branch structure such as Silver Birch instead. Pleached Specimens: These are trees grown on a tall single stem with the heads trained flat on to bamboo frames to give a living screen. These are particularly useful positioned in front of fences with the framework above. Deciduous and evergreen options are available. Hornbeam, Crabapple and Photinia are popular choices. They will need regular trimming and training to keep them in good shape, so good access is required and they are an expensive option due to the time spent training the trees so not for everyone. I hope I’ve given you some insight into the options available for screening, should you require more help, please get in touch via my website www.belgrierson. co.uk. The first RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will be held in June. I’ve been busy growing plants which will be used in the show gardens so I’ll be going along to see the fruit of my labours. Next month I’ll be reviewing the show and selecting my highlights from this prestigious event.

Latest News From Kitten Season Kitten Season is upon us and, just like those hot cakes in the bakery window, there is a stampede for kittens whenever they’re up for rehoming! But spare a thought for those cats who have been through kittenhood and have maturity and character on their side to offer potential owners! In 1989 I adopted 2 youngsters aged 6 and 9 months respectively. Over the years I had seen many visitors to our cattery looking for new feline friends and as they went along the corridor looking for potentials they’d often casually glance in the pods and walk on, deeming older cats as not for them. This has led to me to find out more. “Too old” mainly seems to refer to a cat over 6 months - which tends to mean customers are often looking for a kitten. Since then I’ve made a deliberate choice to take on those cats who have been overlooked on account of their age, and are therefore more difficult to rehome. There are many reasons why cats come into Woodside for rehoming but most are for reasons which genuinely are not the cat’s “fault”. If an older person dies and none of the family are able to take the cat in, Woodside is there to help. But we know the difficulties “older” cats pose. They tend to be nervous, even traumatised by their sudden change in circumstances so take longer to show off their talents and characters. These cats have often come from quiet homes with set routines so find the bright, clean and busy environment in the cattery bewildering despite our efforts to make their lives more comfortable. To date at home we’ve adopted 21 cats who have found their lives suddenly altered by owners needing to rehome them. We’ve also had dogs throughout this time and the cats have accepted this in their own ways. As I look around at our current household of 5 cats (and there’s Lottie our lurcher too!) we have a settled household. All of the cats have been introduced as adults and their ages range from 8 - 16 years. Our laps and sofas are usually taken as soon as we get to sit down and they all have their characters and foibles. What we are trying to say is do consider an “oldie”, which can range from just above kittenhood in some minds. Older cats usually have better road sense, are happier to be gathered in at teatime for the “nightly nosecount” and then be kept in overnight. As all our cats came from Woodside they have been health checked, neutered, fully vaxed, de-flead and wormed and our team of staff have assessed their characters and needs. At home we have joined the scheme at our vets which helps us to spread the finance involved in vaccination
boosters and regular de-fleaing and worming regimes; and gives us access to discounts on some tests for conditions which may affect adult cats - keeping them healthy is vital. We’ve invested in the plug-ins to help new felines settle and as they get used to our busy life they each acquire their favourite sleeping spots, activities and are able to demonstrate their characters. Adopting an adult cat is very rewarding and I urge all visitors looking for a feline recruit to take the time to look closely and consider all of the cats we have at Woodside. The benefits are huge and you definitely get your share of thanks and affection from an adult cat! And once settled they show you the kitten within! • Encourage your family/friends/ neighbours to have their cats neutered • Ensure that your cats are microchipped in case they wander • Why not make contact to become a cat fosterer? (Call 0116 233 6677 and select Opt 5) • Support Woodside, RSPCA Leicestershire’s Branch home, and help us to raise funds to continue to assist needy animals across Leicestershire and Rutland. This neatly brings me to plug our Open Garden, see details to the right. Ruth Lane Chairman for RSPCA Leicestershire based at Woodside Animal Centre

Applications Open For Council’s £250,000 Enterprising Town Centres Grant Scheme Small and medium-sized businesses in North West Leicestershire are being invited to apply for a unique Enterprising Town Centres (ETC) grant designed to help boost and regenerate the district. The North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) scheme aims to support independent town centre businesses, creating new local jobs as well as increasing spend, footfall and occupancy within North West Leicestershire town centres and Coalville Market. Three levels of funding are available ranging from £500 up to larger £25,000 grants, with applications being accepted from Monday 8 May from businesses located in Ashby, Castle Donington, Coalville, Ibstock, Kegworth and Measham. Kay Greenbank, Head of Economic Development at NWLDC, said: “Enterprising Town Centres is an exciting opportunity for businesses across North West Leicestershire and we are looking forward to receiving applications. Enterprising Town Centres is a very special scheme that provides grants and support to retail and town centre businesses. There are no other funding programmes like this available. We are committed to helping businesses set up, expand and relocate into the district, and then enabling them to grow and create more employment. Town centres are vital to the communities that they serve and we want to encourage businesses and customers alike to see our towns as a great place to work and shop. Anyone interested in applying for a grant should get in touch with our Business Focus Team to find out more.” Through the ETC programme the council will target businesses who take up vacant properties, and those independent and niche businesses that make town centres special. ETC grant funding will be made available at three levels: • £500 ‘Golden Hello’ grants for new businesses taking on an empty premise – No match funding required. • £1k – £5k ETC ‘Small’ grants requires 50 per cent match funding and job creation.
Funds Available In Effort To Help North West Leicestershire Get Active Clubs and organisations looking to help the young and old get active, fit and healthy can apply for funding support. North West Leicestershire Local Sports Alliance is behind the scheme which is available to projects in the district that aims to get the inactive residents of North West Leicestershire active. The criteria for funding are that where possible the project should target inactive young people or those aged over 70. It should be a sustainable and long-term scheme, although consideration will also be given to ‘one off’ projects. Groups can apply for either £250 or £500 of funding, although applications for higher amounts can also be submitted and will be considered. Shane Fox, Chair of the Local Sports Alliance, said: “We feel it is essential that people of all ages, backgrounds and financial means have the opportunity to be active, fit and healthy. This grants scheme supports clubs and organisations in providing the facilities and activities that cater for everyone – especially the young and the old." Jason Knight, Leisure Services Team Manager at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “The financial impact on the NHS due to physical inactivity has been widely documented and we all have a role to play in trying to address that. This is just one of a number of initiatives we are involved in to try and get more people, more active, more often.” Grants will be funded through the North West Leicestershire Sport and Physical Activity Commissioning plan Small Grant Scheme 2017/18. The deadline for applications, which will be assessed for suitability, is 5pm on Friday 30 June. They should be sent to Zara Barnes by email to zara. barnes@nwleicestershire.gov.uk or for more information call 01530 454606

help to get off the ground. County Council Shire Grants aim to fund projects that will increase people's ability to cope and reduce demand on the public sector.
The County Council has an important role in reducing inequality. Under the last Government, it felt like Health and Social Care were teetering on the edge of collapse. Government cuts were withdrawing revenue support at the bottom while piling demands on the top. It felt like we were pieces in a Grand Game of Jenga.
I am pleased to report that Coalville people have managed to secure a number of Shire Grants recently.
There are increasing numbers of children of working parents in poverty. The County Council considered cuts to children's Sure Start Centres. There are increasing numbers of older people in need of social care. The County Council reduced eligibility for help to live at home. Private bus companies are revising routes to cut costs. The County Council has no funds to subsidise public transport and get people to work. In turn, this Council has been forced to play Jenga with the NHS. Council services that prevent isolation, mental ill health and social neglect have been withdrawn. This has piled on demand. We are seeing increased hospital admissions and delayed discharges. Whoever is in charge in London after the 8th June, strong and stable Unitary Authorities are needed to join up services across the District and County. We must use our resources cooperatively to support the people of Leicestershire in difficult times. Lorries Parking Over Night County Councillor Michael Wyatt had reported a growing number of lorries parking over night in the Town centre on Mantle Lane and Market Street. Cllr Wyatt said, "No lorries should be using areas within the Town to park over night. I have reported this to the County Council Highways and the local police urging them to take appropriate action against the drivers who are deliberately ignore the no parking if HGV's within the Town Centre." If Any residents know of other areas being used by large HGV's to stay over night for parking then please contact the local police or email me.
HermitageFM have used their Shire Grant to modernise existing Hospital radio services. They have created Carillon Wellbeing Radio station to work with Public Health and the NHS. The radio regulator OFCOM have now given Carillon Wellbeing a full broadcast licence. Soon it will be able to broadcast to anyone in West Leicestershire in need of health and social care.

Cllr Wyatt said, "The relationship between local residents and the quarry need to be more open and both sides need to be able to communicate better when there are genuine concerns about issues related to the workings of the quarry. I am eager to try and see how we can improve that relationship. If any resident has a genuine issue then they must contact us so we can see how it can be addressed, and if any improvements can be made to alleviate the problem being reported."
There are four opportunities a year to apply. The next round closes on the 31st July.

Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through it which means no puddles. Also, with a slip resistant surface it provides better traction for tyres and gives more grip for when you walk on it, making your drive a safe place to be!
