Gran Canaria To Coalville John Commons landlord of The Vic Bikers Pub in Coalville makes a few trips a year during the winter months to Gran Canaria to ride a motorcycle up mountains and down dales, the place is a great getaway in the winter months and the weather is normally an easy match for a good English summer with little or no rain. Gran Canaria is an amazing place to ride a motorcycle with similar outlooks to the Grand Canyon, Malibu beach, mountains where you ride above the clouds, around the edge of cliffs with hundreds of feet drop the other side of the Armco barriers, banana plantations, quaint harbours, awesome coast roads, racetrack quality tarmac in many places and food to die for.

Programme and Historic England.
The essential work to maintain the structural soundness of the Grade II listed structure will be complete by October 2018 at the latest.
Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the HLF funding will allow the project to take the story of the clock tower out into the community. The project focuses on the history of the prominent tower on the town’s landscape and includes:
Careful scheduling means there will be no disruption to the Remembrance Day commemoration events planned for November. North West Leicestershire District Council, which is responsible for the memorial tower, carried out a condition survey, which showed the tower needed significant maintenance work. The roof is leaking and needs improvement, some of the steelwork reinforcement within the tower is rusted and needs to be replaced and the concrete base is fractured and needs to be reinforced. Work includes:
• Repairs to the cast stone on the tower • Replacing the lead covering on the tower roof • Replacing the access door at the top of the tower • Repointing / replacing brick work as necessary • Installing a new lightning protection rod • Internal repairs to the access floors • Internal steel support replacement

Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “As custodians of the Memorial Clock Tower – the heart of Coalville and a prominent structure on the town’s landscape since the 1920s – we are very pleased to see this important structural work going ahead. We would like to thank National Lottery players as their money is not only helping to restore the tower, but is helping us to take its story out into the community so that future generations can learn about its rich heritage. Thank you also to War Memorials Trust, which works tirelessly to ensure our war memorials in the UK are protected and restored.” Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion at NWLDC, added: “We have scheduled the work to the tower very carefully to make sure we make the most of the good weather and, most importantly, that the work does not disrupt the Remembrance commemoration events in November. This is particularly important in 2018, as we get ready to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War 1. I hope local people will take the opportunity during these works to learn a bit more about the history of the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower as we take these steps to secure its future.”
The total cost of the repair work is £116,000. A National Lottery grant of £60,000 has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which will contribute towards the repair works and an educational outreach programme.
Frances Moreton, Director, War Memorials Trust, said: “War memorials are a tangible connection to our shared past creating a link between the fallen and today. It is vital we ensure all our war memorials are in the best possible condition for their age and the charity is delighted to support this project in Coalville. The centenary of World War I is a wonderful opportunity for local communities across the country to protect and conserve their war memorials. If anyone knows of any other war memorials in need of help, please contact us.”
The memorial tower will also benefit from a grant of £30,000 from the Grants for War Memorials scheme supported by the First World War Memorials

History Of Coalville Memorial Square Brought To Life The history of the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower will be brought to life over the coming months thanks to funding from the National Lottery. Working with local heritage groups, North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has brought in heritage consultancy Heritage First to take the story of the tower and Memorial Square out into the community. The Coalville Heritage Society, Friends of Thringstone and Swannington Heritage Trust are providing local expertise on the history of the area and providing volunteer time to bring the story to life. The Memorial Clock Tower, which was unveiled in 1925 to honour those who had fallen in World War I, is a prominent feature on the Coalville landscape. Work will soon start to restore the tower, which is in need of structural repair, using money from North West Leicestershire District Council, the National Lottery and War Memorials Trust. Part of the £60,000 grant from the National Lottery, awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be used to take the history of the tower and the square out into the community. A timeline of maps, photographs and documents illustrating the development of Memorial Square will be displayed around the base of the tower while the work is going on. Local people will have a chance to make recordings of their memories of Memorial Square which will be archived for future generations to listen back to. People can also take the Coalville Clock Tower Quiz at www.choosecoalville.co.uk to test their knowledge about the square and the tower itself. Meanwhile, children from Belvoirdale School will learn about the history of the square and consider its future as part of a project supported by Coalville Heritage Society. They will also be asking family members to share their memories of Memorial Square and potentially recording their reminiscences for future generations to listen to and enjoy. A free touring heritage exhibition will be on display in various locations in and around Coalville, accompanied by a free brochure, and for people who want to know even more about the history of commemoration in Coalville, a special talk will be held in the autumn. The restoration work on the tower will be complete by October, with no disruption to any Remembrance commemoration events.
Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion, said: “The Coalville Memorial Clock Tower is such an important part of the town’s history and future, so it’s important that we work to preserve it. Thank you to War Memorials Trust for their grant and also to National Lottery players, who have not only contributed to the repair work but also to the community work we can do alongside the restoration. This is a great opportunity for local people, young and old, to learn about Memorial Square and our wonderful tower, to share their own stories about the area and to get involved with a wonderful history project.” Michael Faulkner, Heritage First, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this exciting Heritage Lottery Funded project which will provide an opportunity for the whole community to get involved with celebrating Coalville’s commemorative sites and remembering the lives of the individuals behind the names. We hope the project will provide a legacy for future generations to engage with this pivotal monument in the town.” Steve Duckworth, Chairman of the Coalville Heritage Society said, “Since 1925 the clock tower has been the central dominant feature of Coalville and the Coalville Heritage Society has a collection of photographs charting its history. Built as a war memorial after World War 1 it is today a monument to all those who have lost their lives in conflict since 1918. The Coalville Heritage Society is pleased that North West Leicestershire District Council has embarked on a project to conserve the clock tower and we are honoured to be partners in the interpretation and educational work that is being carried along-sidethe restoration, in the year that marks the centenary of the end of the Great War.” Nita Pearson from the Friends of Thringstone, added: “We were delighted to be asked to help with research towards the touring heritage exhibition and brochure for people who want to know about the Coalville Clock Tower memorial and others around the district. Working on this project will help to secure information not only for the present generation but for generations yet to come.” Roger Bisgrove, Heritage Researcher from Swannington Heritate Trust, said: “The Coalville Memorial Clock Tower was built in the south east corner of the pre 1895 boundaries of Swannington parish, at the point where Whitwick, Hugglescote, Snibston and Swannington parishes met before Coalville Urban District Council was formed. The project is an exciting opportunity to work with other heritage groups on an area of common interest.”

County Councillor
Michael Wyatt
M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk
Free Wi-Fi To Be Installed In Ashby And Coalville Shoppers and visitors to the market towns of Coalville and Ashby-de-laZouch will soon be able to access free Wi-Fi from their mobile devices. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) is investing approximately £90,000 in the Wi-Fi, which is proven to bring benefits to businesses and improve the shopping, recreational and tourist experience of those that visit towns, increasing footfall in the process. The contract to install and provide the free Wi-Fi for the next five years was last week awarded to InTechnology Wi-Fi. It is hoped the new service will be up and running by the end of the year.
Wyatt Calls For Urgent Action Against Developers Cllr Michael Wyatt has written to the chief Executive of the District Council urging her, and her planning enforcement officers to take action against the developers at the Greenhill Farm Site off Greenhill Road in Coalville, after learning the developers had started work on site, cut down trees which were supposed to of been left standing, and breached a number of other conditions set by the Council’s planning officers. Cllr Wyatt said “The District council must take action against these developers otherwise it sends a message to others that the council are weak on enforcing planning conditions. I find it absolutely outrageous that the developers think they can start work without checking all the conditions have been met. I hope the Council make sure they use whatever powers they have to take appropriate action against the developer, and even consider termination of their planning consent for this site.”

The benefits of free public Wi-Fi include:
• Users save on their mobile data and associated charges, which encourages people to stay longer in town centres
• Businesses can more effectively use the web as a marketing tool to attract customers
• It becomes easier for people to navigate through the towns and find the shops, restaurants and venues they are looking for
• The landing page of the free Wi-Fi can be used to promote town centres, events, attractions or business offers.
• NWLDC can use data to monitor footfall trends in the town. The decision to introduce the free Wi-Fi comes after significant research that shows its value to town centres. Some of the key facts that arose from the research include:
• The 2016 Leicestershire Market Towns research report identified Wi-Fi as being a ‘must have’ for market towns to meet the expectations of consumers
• The Great British High Street's Digital High Street 2020 report,
published in 2015, says that public access Wi-Fi is a critical element of the digital infrastructure that is necessary to revitalise the high street
• The Office for National Statistics has reported that 73 per cent of
adults in Great Britain in 2017 access the internet 'on the go' using a mobile phone or smartphone - compared to 36 per cent in 2011.
The approximate value of the five-year contract, including installation, is £90,000. NWLDC will meet much of this cost but has secured funding of £15,000 from Leicestershire County Council and £5,000 from the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP). Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We’re always looking for ways to improve the experience for visitors to our market towns and extensive research showed offering free Wi-Fi can have benefits for businesses, shoppers and tourists. We want our businesses to be able to trade and compete in the 21st century and to use their online footprint to attract customers. Once up-and-running shoppers wanting to find the nearest cafe, clothes shop, book store or restaurant can log into the free Wi-Fi to find what they are looking for quickly and easily. This is very much a longterm investment for us, boosted by funding from Leicestershire County Council and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP), which we believe will increase footfall, trade and the visitor experience in both Coalville and Ashby into the future.”

Member Of Parliament
Andrew Bridgen
M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk When the UK voted to leave the European Union, it was on the basis that we will once again have control of our money, our borders and our laws. This is completely incompatible with remaining wedded to EU arrangements such as the customs union. To those unfamiliar with the concept of the Customs Union, it means in practical terms all members impose the same tariffs on goods brought in from the rest of the world. In effect, it acts as a protectionist barrier to free trade meaning inefficient producers within the EU are not subjected to competition from Countries outside the union. What that means in practice is for example, that we are forced to impose an average 20 percent tariff on foods imported from outside the EU with the tariff on dairy being 37 percent, the one on sugar at 24 percent and the tariff on processed chicken as high as 88 percent. The significant effects of this are twofold, firstly it restricts the ability of poorer nations to grow their economy through trade and secondly it inflates the prices of everyday goods which hurts the poorest in our society hardest. The theme of the Leave campaign in the EU referendum was “taking back control” and that must mean that we are able to draw up our own trade arrangements based on the UK’s interests. For too long we have been shackled to an arrangement which works well for some member states but not so well for us. However, it would appear however that the House of Lords and the Labour Party wish to keep us in the customs union and continuing to pay billions of pounds to Brussels in tariffs after we are supposed to have left the EU. Another idea under consideration is a Customs Partnership whereby
the UK would collect tariffs on behalf of the EU. Again this idea is flawed. Boris Johnson summed it up well by stating 'If you have the new customs partnership, you have a crazy system whereby you end up collecting the tariffs on behalf of the EU at the UK frontier. 'If the EU decides to impose punitive tariffs on something the UK wants to bring in cheaply there's nothing you can do.'That's not taking back control of your trade policy, it's not taking back control of your laws, it's not taking back control of your borders and it's actually not taking back control of your money either, because tariffs would get paid centrally back to Brussels.' It is clear that we should adopt a'highly streamlined' customs arrangement to minimise customs checks by using technology and trusted trader schemes to clear consignments of goods before they reach our borders. This would allow for frictionless trade whilst securing our borders and allowing us to strike mutually beneficial trade deals with the rest of the world. There have been a number of economic announcements this month which haven’t got a lot of coverage but offer encouraging signs about the progress the UK continues to make. Firstly, the proportion of low-paid workers has fallen to its lowest level in decades. According to the Resolution Foundation, the share of employees in low pay fell from 19.2% to 18.1% in the year to April 2017, the lowest proportion since 1982. The drop is largely a result of the National Living Wage introduced by the Conservatives. Inflation is continuing to fall with wages rising ahead of it and the deficit has fallen faster than predicted again and stands at 2% of GDP against the 9.9% left behind by Labour. This is held in the Charles Booth Centre, Thringstone, on The Green (which used to be known as Thringstone House Community Centre) LE67 8NR. The exhibition of about 300 paintings is mainly of work by the 24 members of the group, but also includes several local visiting artists who exhibit with us each year. All the paintings are for sale and one special picture will be chosen by the group as a raffle prize. There is a competition to see who gets the most votes for the visitors’ favourite picture and tea and cake are available to buy at the weekends. The group meets at the centre on Friday afternoons throughout the year and also enjoys outings in the summer and at Christmas. They produce work at a high standard in a wide variety of media and are very supportive of each other. We look forward to seeing you there. Come and enjoy beautiful pictures.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service.
Cloudy2Clear GUARANTEE All Customers That An Average Quote Will Take No Longer Than 20 MINS!!!
Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that
obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Coalville & Hugglescote areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
