Affordable, Personalisable Wedding Signage Article by Gemma Patel

The T Bird Gifts, based in Whitwick, Leicestershire, has produced a range of affordable, personalisable signage that is easy to order, to take the stress out of just part of the wedding planning process for brides and grooms. According to hitched.co.uk, the average wedding in the UK now costs a huge £36,127. But whatever your budget, you can still have all of the extras that make the day special, by seeking out more affordable options. There is a growing trend for couples to have personalised wedding signage; from a large welcome sign, to the table plan, to menus and sweet tables. As well as being functional, signs can add that extra personal touch to the décor, with bespoke messages that are personal to couples and their guests. The T Bird Gifts already offers a range of personalised items in their wedding range, including save the dates, gifts, confetti, ring boxes, cufflinks and cake toppers. But having seen the growing trend for signage, they wanted to offer couples an affordable, personalisable option. Three designs ranges have been created along with a variety of wording suggestions, but all signs can all be personalised, or a couple’s own messages can be produced. And if a couple has a particular design in mind to match their wedding theme, The T Bird will be more than happy to help. The business owner, Emma Clarke said "Wedding signs are the perfect finishing touch to your wedding day so we wanted to help take the stress out of just one element of a couple’s wedding planning. We have made our signage affordable for any budget and ordering is easy and convenient." Signs can be printed in any font colour, A5, A4 or A3, landscape or portrait and on white or ivory textured card. All signs are printed edge-to-edge and are shipped flat in hard back recyclable envelopes. To view the range and place an order, visit www. thetbird.co.uk/wedding-stationery-65-c.asp

Whitwick & District U3A Article by Sue Calcutt

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its next monthly General Meeting on Friday 21st June. For retired people, or those soon to be retired, this is a chance to discover the opportunities for new learning experiences and friendships within a local organisation. There are over forty Interest Groups with something to suit most tastes from Days Out to Digital Photography, from Curry Club to Curling and from Fun Choir to French. Whether large or small, educational or recreational, all U3A Groups are based on self-help. Full details about the Interest Groups will be available at the General Meeting. In addition there will be a guest speaker. This month we welcome Matthew Eames with the very topical subject “Love Food Hate Waste”. Matthew is from Leicestershire County Council’s Waste Initiative Team. His talk will include facts about the scale and impact of food waste as well as tips on how to reduce your own food waste. He will offer advice on portion size and storage, meal planning and using up leftovers. To listen to Matthew and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. The U3A is a nonreligious and non-political organisation: everyone is welcome. Meanwhile comprehensive information about our thriving and friendly U3A is available on our website; search online for www.whitwicku3a.org.uk

Newmarket, 7-8 Marlborough Square Designs For New Coalville Indoor Market To Be Drawn Up By Local Architect Article by NW Leicestershire District Council Work to create a new indoor market on Marlborough Square in Coalville is continuing, with the appointment of an architects firm to bring together detailed designs for the scheme. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has appointed Loughborough-based Darnton B3, who will work with initial concepts to create a modern market with space for a variety of stalls and food outlets. Newmarket, 7-8 Marlborough Square will open in early 2020, with new traders joining existing market stall owners who will move from the current market hall. Coalville Market will stay open at its current site until the new market opens its doors. Design work is expected to take place over the coming weeks, with work on the market starting in October and due to complete in early 2020. Concept imagery has been installed on the windows at the new market site, showing market stalls and ‘street food’ style vendors. Businesses are encouraged to register their interest with the council if they would like to trade in Newmarket when it opens in early 2020. The name - Newmarket refers to the historic name for

the square, which was used as a market during the initial development of the town and was called ‘New Market’ up to the late 1890s before it was changed to Marlborough Square. Steve Duckworth, Chair of Coalville Heritage Society said: "The New Market was both the public and live stock market until the market relocated to the Red House, Market Street and Mantle Lane area in the 1890s. There were important buildings around the New Market such as the Public Hall (today part of the Emporium) and major hardware business Coleman and Sons which was on the site of the Lloyds Bank. We don’t currently know why the old market place became known as ‘Marlborough Square’ and we’d be very interested to hear from anyone who does know why." As part of its work with NWLDC to bring heritage to the streets, the Coalville Heritage Society has provided several historic images of the square through the ages which are on display in the windows of the new market for the duration of the building work. Newmarket forms part of NWLDC’s plans to regenerate Coalville, and a wider scheme to transform Marlborough Square, creating an outdoor market and events space to complement the new indoor market. Councillor Andrew

Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "The move from its current location to the centre of town will be excellent for the market, and we’re pleased to have a large number of traders already taking up spaces in the new venue." “Our architects will now take the concept for a fresh, modern and attractive market and draw up detailed designs that will be used to create the ambitious space we want for the town. "New and existing market stalls will mix with interesting food vendors to create a real destination within the heart of the town centre." Michael Cooper, Senior Associate Architect at DarntonB3 Architecture, said: "We are very pleased to be appointed to assist NWLDC in developing the scheme, which will benefit Coalville, in bringing the old Litten Tree public house building back into use and forming a key part of the Marlborough Square development that will follow." For more information on the Newmarket project and other regeneration projects in Coalville, visit www.nwleics.gov. uk/coalville Anyone who has information about the naming of Marlborough Square can contact the Coalville Heritage Society at coalville.heritage@gmail.com

BEING PAIN-FREE IS PRICELESS

ANDY GIVES SCIATICA THE NEEDLE

NOT only did Andy Kessler from Breedon get rid of his crippling sciatica, he’s now free of IBS, thanks to Herbal Healing in Coalville. The specialist electrician journeyman was stopped in his tracks when shocking pain in his hip and leg travelled down to his foot. Andy, 48, said he knew straight away what he must do to be cured of the pain. “I called Doctor Ye, because he cured me a few years ago - and I knew he would do it again.” Andy admits he had been extremely skeptical about acupuncture. However, having now been cured not once but twice by Doctor Ye, he has total faith in the clinic on Belvoir Road. He says: “It was a real eye-opener to me. I’m quite a conventional man but this doctor and the knowledge he has is sensational.” In February, the terrible pain

Dr Ye with Andy Kessler from his back down his right leg returned. He had been painfree since his first acupuncture at Herbal Healing which was in October 2016. He works in London every week on the Crossrail project and his pain was so harsh that he could no longer sit down on the train to work. He says: “I knew it was time to visit Doctor Ye again and that he was the only man who could cure it.” Sure enough, after a few sessions of acupuncture, Andy is

now feeling much better and his pain has melted away. “I look forward to my sessions. The needles don’t hurt at all when they are in place – it makes you feel wonderful and relaxed.” At the same time he treated Andy’s sciatica, Doctor Ye successfully treated his IBS, using different acupuncture points. This has further impressed Andy, who now need not worry about the whereabouts of the nearest toilet. No more griping pain in his gut and no more shooting pain from his back down his leg to his toes. Andy knows he has a lot to be thankful for. He says: “I advise everyone I see who is suffering any sort of pain to visit this amazing man at the clinic here in Belvoir Road, Coalville.” Give yourself the best chance of feeling better, by calling the clinic on 01530 810888.

Jasmine’s Story - And A Big First Birthday Party! Article by Jane Walters

Would You Help To Support Dogs Like Jasmine And Taylor? In April last year a young stray Lurcher - we named her Jasmine was brought into Leicester and Leicestershire Animal Aid (LAA), in Huncote, and just six days later she gave birth to seven beautiful puppies. Thanks to the love and care of the staff at the Centre, Jasmine was given all the support she needed as a new mum and her seven babies thrived and were soon ready to find their forever homes. Fast forward a year and our training barn is now full of barks and happy laughter as the litter of beautiful siblings, and their new forever families, are brought back together for a fun-filled first birthday celebration. You can see from the photo how successful it has been. At Leicester Animal Aid, Huncote, we care for more than 400 dogs and cats every year who have been lost, abandoned, neglected or whose owners find they can no longer care for them. We don’t receive any Government funding and rely solely on the generosity of the community to help us to continue to help dogs in need like Jasmine. And please don’t forget long-stay ‘poster-boy’ Taylor, featured in an earlier magazine. The Centre is open to visit every day, except Wednesday, from 11am - 2.30pm, and our next big fundraising event is the Summer Mini-Market and Afternoon Tea on Saturday 15th June, 11am - 2pm. Membership Scheme - Four Levels From Just £3 Per Month Many of our supporters and volunteers have joined our LAA Membership Scheme. Regular Membership donations provide a strong and sustainable source of income to help us plan for the future. By becoming a member of our local animal-loving community, YOU can help to make sure we can continue to help dogs and cats, all in need of help and a second chance. We have four different membership levels: from Bronze starting at just £3 per month, Silver from £10 per month, Gold from £20 per month and Platinum from £40 per month. All Members will receive a welcome letter, membership card and certificate, membership enamel badge, membership car sticker, twice-yearly newsletter and twiceyearly e-News updates. To find out more about becoming a member of the LAA family, please visit our website www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk or find us on Facebook. £20 could pay for a warm and cosy bed to rest and recover. £10 could pay for flea and worming treatments, or food for a week. £3 could pay to microchip to help reunite a pet with their future owner.

Last year Heather Scarecrow Festival celebrated its 20th Anniversary in quite some style. The record year raised £9,000 for local groups with a bumper amount of visitors, including a few well known characters from the Star Wars Movies. The icing on the cake came with the event being awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the Best Outdoor Experience category of the 2018 Leicestershire Tourism and Hospitality Awards. Quite an achievement for an event organised by community volunteers! The Scarecrow Festival’s organisers are not resting on their laurels this year. Galvanised by last year’s amazing success they plan to develop some of the ideas introduced last year as they as they forge ahead to the next decade of Scarecrows. As well as amazing scarecrows, you can expect inflatable’s, stalls, refreshments, face painting and more, depending on which days you visit. The aim is to raise funds for Village groups whilst providing an affordable day out for visitors. So don’t expect an environment where parents are constantly under pressure to keep spending. This year’s event will take place from 11 am on Sunday 28th July until 6pm on Sunday 4th August. As always, there will be ample free parking and the popular Tea Room at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67 2QJ) with additional parking at Heather Village Hall LE67 2RE. Once again local groups and charities have been invited to make use of the Village Hall to raise funds for their organisation whilst also selling Scarecrow guide and providing additional toilet and refreshment facilities. Details of the activities taking place at the Hall each day will be shown in the Festival Guide and announced on the Facebook Page. During the final weekend there will be additional stalls and face painting at the Football Club and maybe a few extra surprises.

Barnardo's Supported Lodgings

w w w. o a ktre el e ttings.co.u k

Article by Kam Doll

Supported Lodgings is a valuable accommodation option available to young people transitioning from the care system to more independent living. It is family-based support within the homes of members of the community who are willing to provide a spare room to a vulnerable young person aged 16 to 21 who cannot live with their own families and who are not yet ready for independent living. Our service recruits and trains people who can provide appropriate accommodation; this means the young person will have their own room and use of shared facilities. Through our excellent training programme, ongoing guidance and support, we enable our providers to acquire the skills and confidence to support a young person both practically and emotionally to gain the necessary skills required to eventually live independently. Whilst in placement, as well as providing emotional support, our providers focus on offering practical support around key areas of independence; such as managing on a budget, shopping, cooking, education, social skills and being a good tenant. Supported lodgings is something you can do alongside your current employment / commitments and you can receive a payment of £150 per week. You will be fully involved in placing a young person and it will be your decision as to who is placed with you. If you are working with a young person who would benefit from a Supported Lodgings Placement, or are interested in becoming a Supported Lodgings Provider, please contact the service on 02476 372596 or email us at BSLmidlands@barnardos.org.uk to find out more. If you are a young person interested in Supported Lodgings, ask your social worker or personal advisor for more information.

It Can’t Carry On Like This There are some people who simply don’t care that rising global temperatures are melting the polar ice caps, raising sea levels, drowning coastal communities and disturbing familiar weather patterns. North West Leicestershire has the highest number of workers having to travel by car simply to get to their job and some of the worst public transport links in the country. For forty years we have carried on building housing estates miles away from places of employment, expecting residents to pump out gallons of CO2 commuting morning and evening by private car. We’re Not Getting Anywhere When my husband persuaded me to join him in Coalville, I had a job that involved popping down to London now and then. How was I going to get there? ‘Don’t worry,’ he said. ‘There’ll be a railway here in five years.’ That was twenty-five years ago and, if anything, matters are worse. It is nearly two hours to Nottingham University by bus and longer to get to Derby. Leicester University is over an hour by bus or 38minutes by private car, burning fossil fuels and wasting precious time that could be spent reading or listening to music. We Need To Take The Climate Seriously Forty years after I bought my first ‘Friends of the Earth’ cookbook to take to University, there is a new generation of young people, many of whom can’t afford a car, listening to 16-year-old Greta Thunberg pleading with us to take this issue seriously. In May all three major political parties at Leicestershire County Council got behind Labour’s motion to declare a ‘Climate Emergency’. Recognising there is a problem is the first step towards solving it. Our children will not forgive us if these are just words. We do not have another forty years to waste while deciding what to do.

Cllr Dr Terri Eynon

A Victorian Answer To A Modern Question? We can lay the blame for CO2 emissions and climate change on the Victorians, the industrial revolution, the wilful burning of fossilised forests, laid down millennia ago, pumping their carbon into the atmosphere. We may also need to look to the Victorians for some of the solutions. When Stephenson and Stenson sunk their pits and set up their brick factories in Coalville, they couldn’t expect workers to commute to them by private car. They built houses for their workers to live in. The Victorian railway line between Burton and Leicester, variously named ‘The Ivanhoe Line’ or ‘The National Forest Line’ and still used for freight, passes right next to the Amazon factory with its huge car park. The line also passes through Bardon Grange, where 4500 detached houses will shortly dispatch a few thousand morning commuters condemned to grind along the congested A511 in gas-guzzling cars on their way to the A42 and M1. Time To Reopen The Railway A politically neutral community action group the Campaign for the Re-opening of the Ivanhoe Line (CRIL) gave a presentation to MPs and Councillors at the Railway, Swadlincote on the 23rd May. The geographical and political climate has changed, and the decision-makers need to catch up. Kitted out with engineers and signallers and with a military approach to getting things done CRIL, is no ordinary campaign group. I for one am happy to volunteer as a foot-soldier in their ranks and I hope you will too. CRIL will be bringing their campaign to Coalville at the end of June. Keep your eye on the press, check their website www.ivanhoeline.org or join them on Facebook.

High Street Bid For Government Money Is Essential For Our Town Councillor Michael Wyatt has asked the Chief Exec about the council’s submission to the government for funding to help improve our local high streets in Coalville. The chief executive of the council has confirmed a submission showing a willingness to take part in the bidding process as been submitted. The council are now waiting to see if they have been successfully chosen to continue onto the next stage which will allow them to put together a bid which will unlock financial support for our Town. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “I am eager to see the council push for this extra money for our Town. We need to help our local businesses to diversify by changing the local layout of the pavements so more outside areas can be utilised by local businesses. At the moment many local traders are restricted to what they can do. The council must make sure that this opportunity is not wasted.” Liberal Democrat’s Make Big Gains In Coalville Michael Wyatt and his team made big gains in the local elections recently which saw the Lib Dem’s go from 1 to 4. In several other seats they came a very close second. Both Labour and the Tories lost seats to the Lib Dem’s. Cllr Michael Wyatt said. “A big thank you to everyone who supported us. Coalville residents sent a very strong message that enough is enough of the empty words and broken promises that our towns been subjected to for the past 12 years by both Labour and the Tories. Finally we have elected councillors who are local, committed and passionate about pushing for the regeneration of our town. We also came very close in several other seats which we will be fighting very hard next time to win. Remember the Tories only have a majority of two and in the next four years anything can happen.” The seats which the Lib Dems won are: Bardon - Angela Black Coalville East - Marie French Greenhill - Jake Windram Castle Rock - Michael Wyatt

Bardon Liaison Committee Update The Council voted to appoint Lib Dem Cllr Black (Bardon Ward) & Lib Dem Cllr Windram (Greenhill Ward) to the Bardon Liaison committee at the last annual council meeting. The two new members replace the councillors who lost their seats at the last local elections. The committee is where all complaints are reported, and where the management are held accountable for any planning or regulatory issues. If you have any concerns about noise, dust or any other issue relating to Bardon Aggregate then please do not hesitate to let our elected members know. Cllr Michael Wyatt, County Councillor is also a member of the committee and currently the sitting Chairman. Michael can also deal with any issues relating to the workings within the Bardon Aggregate area. Any complaints can be sent to the council environmental department or you can email the chairman, Michael Wyatt direct on mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk
