Marlborough Square Methodist Church Article by Elspeth Myles
There are puzzling things happening at Marlborough Square Methodist Church. It’s a busy time at Marlborough Square Methodist Church in Coalville over the next few months. In March, during the Lent period, we are staging a Jigsaw Puzzle Festival. There will be jigsaws on display in the church; some for you view, some for you to help complete and some for you to enjoy sitting down to, with a friend perhaps, just to enjoy the peaceful distraction of a jigsaw puzzle with no pressure to clear up or finish! There will also be some puzzles to buy. The church will be open on Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday from 10:30 – 2pm. Each jigsaw puzzle with be linked somehow with either a bible story, or a quote from the bible or a hymn. Come and visit us and see how well we do! During the month of March, on Tuesdays we will be serving Lent Lunches for anyone who would like to join in with us and in the evenings we are hosting a series of studies based on the musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ to prepare for Easter. You are very welcome to join us. The Knitted Bible We are also planning a Knitted Bible festival in June. At this event we have knitted characters from some bible stories. We will be open for visitors, refreshments will be served and any knitters who would like to join us and share their knitting skills and knowledge with those of us who are not so competent, are very welcome. We hope very much that these events will attract people into the church building to experience a very warm welcome and enjoy what is on display. There is lots going on at Marlborough Square Church during each week: Sunday worship is from 10:30 with refreshments afterwards. Monday we have Brownies Tuesday we have coffee morning from 10:30 and Musical Theatre School in the evenings. Wednesday we have Seated Exercise 1112noon and Community Choir 7:30-8:30 Saturday we have coffee morning from 10:30. Come and look at the notice board to find out other activities we organise. A very warm welcome to you all.

New School Garden Built With Help From The Community In Thringstone Article by Gemma Patel
Thringstone Primary School has recently completed a garden project, thanks to support from parents and the village community. Whilst carrying out forest schools work, an idea came about for a fruit and vegetable garden, where children throughout the school can benefit from hands-on learning. An area in the school grounds was chosen as the perfect spot to create the garden and a goal was set to transform the area in just one week. Parents and the local community generously contributed equipment, materials, plants, pots etc for the garden, as well as their time, with many parents and volunteers getting their hands dirty alongside the children. From an unused bed of soil, a garden was created with raised beds, benches, pallet planters and decorative stones. Pupils will be able to tend to the garden and watch it grow through the seasons, learning about plants, fruits and vegetables in a practical way. From the initial dream to create a garden in a week, support from staff showed the pupils that it was possible, and the project was achieved by everyone working together. The project could not have been completed without the generous donations from local businesses and organisations. A big thank you from the school to Travis Perkins, Safe Retail, Baugh Transport and Thringstone Primary School PTA.

Technology Hits Bagworth Bridge Group Article by Shelagh Rumbelow
Lighten The Allergen Load Article by Gary Trickett
Pollution, climate change and at this time of the year, pollen, can all place a burden on your respiratory system. When faced with a heavy load of irritants, sinuses go into overdrive and a build-up of phlegm can turn into catarrh, which changes the pressure inside the head, causing all types of pain. Reducing airborne chemicals can result in prompt and substantial health gains, not to mention huge benefits for the planet. Potentially harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in air fresheners, perfumes, paints, cleaning products and liquid fuels, can lead to indoor air levels of many pollutants being up to 10 times higher than outdoor levels. Switching to low VOC alternatives or better still avoiding them altogether will help you to reduce the personal load you create. Keep your body as toxinfree as possible and be aware of the role histamine plays in your body’s response to allergy. With hayfever for example, it identifies pollen as harmful and produces an antibody called IgE, which triggers the production of histamine. Histamine is an inflammatory chemical that causes swelling, mucus formation and itching and burning in localised areas such as the throat, nose and eyes. Several plants are noted for their supportive action of the respiratory system. Luffa operculata can help with sneezing, blocked and runny noses. It is usually teamed with Galphimia glauca, which can be useful for reducing eye irritation triggered by hayfever and allergic rhinitis. Pollinosan Hayfever Tablets from A.Vogel contain both and are non-drowsy so will not affect your ability to drive or use machinery. They can be taken ‘on the spot’, or started two weeks prior to known symptom outbreak, if your symptoms regularly appear at the same time each year. A nasal spray is also available for immediate relief. For further advice visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.
The Bagworth Whistlestop Bridge group goes from strength to strength. Now with over 40 members and some 6 tables of players attending weekly at the Bagworth Community Centre, the group has been uplifted by the introduction of technology. The club has developed its new website…www.bridgewebs. com/bagworthwhistlestopbridge and with the aid of its own fund raising has managed to purchase a computer and 8 seven inch tablets loaded with scoring software to enable players to enter and monitor their scores onto the web site. Even those totally inexperienced in using technology have developed confidence through the use of the tablets. Bridge is well known as a mind sport to keep the brain active and the group in Bagworth is very welcoming, fun and sociable as well. Throughout the 18 months since it was established the group members have worked tirelessly to make themselves self- sufficient via table fees, raffles, donations and teaching. The group is run entirely on a voluntary basis. If you are interested in learning or just want to see how it is played, do come along to visit the group and observe. You will be welcomed and usually with a tea or coffee and can enjoy the good facilities at our local Community Centre…so come on in!! In April the group will be running and Improvers Course focussing on ‘Extending the Bidding to find the best contract’ and ‘ Using and Responding to weak Twos’ . Members from other clubs and those who do not play club bridge are welcome to join…costs are £10 for the day including tea and coffee and all course materials. Wanted! Traders Encouraged To Apply For Coalville’s Newmarket Article by North West Leicestershire District Council
Traders looking to move into a new modern and vibrant market being built in the heart of Coalville are being invited to submit their applications. Work on Newmarket started in January and will see the former Litten Tree pub in Marlborough Square transformed into a modern space with food stalls and an eating area, as well as traditional market stalls, pop-up traders and space for events. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), which owns the current indoor market and is carrying out the transformation work, is looking to attract a variety of food and non-food businesses on a range of lease options. The vision for Newmarket is for a modern shopping and eating experience which provides an exciting customer experience to both locals and visitors to the town. Newmarket applications that are particularly desirable might include: • Fresh and local produce • Unique, fine and unusual products • Recycled and fairtrade products • Delicatessen, bakery or cheesemonger specialists. The new market is expected to open in spring 2020. Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “Work on Newmarket is progressing well and we’re excited to now invite applications for traders that share our vision for this vibrant space. We’re looking for both food and non-food traders that want to offer high quality products, bring a buzz to Coalville and offer an exciting customer experience. We can’t wait for Newmarket to open and see the modern shopping and eating experience it’s going to provide – if you’d like to come on this journey with us then now is the time to apply.” The current indoor market will stay open until the new one is ready to receive customers. Its trading days are Tuesday 8am to 2pm, and Friday and Saturday 8am to 4pm. All current traders have been offered support to apply for a space in Newmarket or to find suitable new premises in the town. Anyone who would like to apply for a stall at Newmarket can do so online at www.nwleics.gov.uk/traders To discuss trader opportunities further, potential applicants can also contact markets@nwleicestershire.gov.uk or call 01530 454598 for more information.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling
Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.
If you are OVER 60 it £75 will only COST YOU £75* to make or update your Will.

Carer Of The Year Awards Finalists Announced! Article by Bev Cowley
Whitwick & District U3A Article by Sue Calcutt Spot the Difference! Alert readers will notice that there has been a change to the logo above this article. The U3A has a new strapline: Learn, laugh, live! These words have been the motto of the U3A for some time and now they have replaced the former “University of the Third Age” as part of the official logo. The new strapline is more positive and to the point as the U3A movement aims to support the well-being of older people. Retirement should be a time for learning, laughing and living life to the full, an aim fully endorsed by Whitwick and District U3A. The next General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be held on Friday 20th March. With more daylight and milder weather, there is no better time to share hobbies and interests with like-minded companions, learning and laughing together whilst being fully committed to self-help. Group Leaders and others will be on hand at the General Meeting to answer any questions and pass on information about the opportunities available. The quest speaker at the General Meeting will be Sandy Leong. Sandy has spoken to us several times before. This time her presentation is entitled “Black cats, new moons and ladders – The Origins of Superstitions”. Do you throw salt over your shoulder if you spill it? Do you touch wood for good luck or wonder if things did not go to plan because it was Friday 13th?
Enrych, a local charity based in the Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville has more than 30 years’ experience seeing through people’s physical and hidden disabilities. Enrych offer support to adults with the help of a Personal Assistant ‘Enrycher’ to help them meet life goals from day to day tasks to branching out in the community. In 2018-2019 Enrych supported over 1,000 adults and more than 200 family carers providing more than 59,000 hours of support which is equivalent to 1,135 hours per week! On the 30th January at The LeicestershireLive Carer of The Year Awards rewarded, recognised and celebrated unsung carers who help better the lives of others. The event took place at the Mercure Leicester Grand Hotel and will highlight all of the amazing work care professionals do, going above and beyond for the most vulnerable people in our society. Enrych had three finalists, Liz Wood, Amy Gough and Michelle Golding who have been selected as finalists. Liz was nominated for ‘Supporting Independence. After being notified Liz said “I cried! It was such a shock, I love my job and never expect any praise!” Liz went on “Liz said “The job satisfactions is enormous. There isn’t a day goes by where I don’t feel like I have enriched the lives of the people that I support”. Liz supports a chap in his 40’s with learning disabilities and with her encouragement, commitment and support he is now able to pay his bills online and speak confidently on the telephone. He even applied for a job and attended a 2 hour interview last month which involved him standing up and doing a presentation! They cook together and over the festive period they put up his Christmas tree which hadn’t been out of the box for years – every bauble told a story and they sang to Christmas music and enjoyed festive treats while they did it. Liz even helped him to make and write all of his own Christmas cards. His confidence has grown dramatically all thanks to Liz’s dedication. Another Enrycher Michelle said “I thought it was a scam when I received the phone call, I just feel so lucky to have such a wonderful job where I can help people.” Michelle added “I don’t do anything amazing, I feel privileged to support such lovely people in our community” Michelle was a finalist in the ‘Dementia Carer of The Year’ category after she was nominated for the wonderful work she has done with Betty. They bake cakes, go to garden centres and have even enjoyed a ride on a local steam train. Having Michelle support Betty, her husband has been able to reconnect with old friends and enjoy his hobbies once again, even if this is nothing more than some ‘me-time’ in his shed! Michelle said “We love looking through fashion magazines together, Betty was a young lady in the 50’s and 60’s so we like nothing more than sharing a cuppa and having a giggle whilst we critique the fashions of today!” Our third finalist Amy Gough has been a PA with Enrych for nearly 8 years. She has a wealth of experience and has particularly enjoyed supporting Luke as he offered her fresh challenges which at first she find daunting and but after just a few weeks she realised that Luke wasn’t as challenging as he first appeared! Amy used her experience to discover ways of allowing Luke to be himself without ‘smothering’ or ‘mothering’ him and she soon started to notice small changes which told her that he was happy and enjying the time they were spending together. Luke likes to be busy so Amy finds him ‘jobs’ to do. Amy thoroughly enjoys their time together and feels Luke sees her as his ‘mate’ who he canbe chilled with. Amy said “At first I had to get my head round how he liked things to be, he used to fiddle with my radio constantly but after a while I realised he just wanted to listen to his favourite song – now I know this we drive along singing really loudly together and he loves it and it’s these small things that makes being an Enrycher so rewarding! If you would like to find out more about working with Enrych as a PA either call 015340 832926, email hello@enrych.org.uk or visit www.enrych.org.uk
Sandy will examine these and many more superstitions and explain their origins. To enjoy Sandy’s talk and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start.

Community Scheme Launches In Leicestershire Article by Leicestershire County Council
Time4Leicestershire, an innovative scheme where people across the county are rewarded for helping others in their community, has launched across Leicestershire. The new skills exchange scheme, where people carry out good deeds for others and are rewarded by having somebody do a good deed for them, is part of the national Timebanking UK initiative. The scheme is designed to help people meet up with others in their area to swap skills and receive help with practical tasks. Timebanking differs from volunteering, as people swap skills. For every hour of time somebody gives helping, they receive an hour’s time credit to bank and use on somebody helping them for an hour. Skills swapped can be anything from mowing a lawn or baking a cake. People don’t have to meet in person to benefit from the scheme, they can help online, for example by helping someone with their CV or digitally editing photographs. Time4Leicestershire is being run by Leicestershire County Council’s Public Health team, who are encouraging people to sign up, register what skills they can offer and see what expertise they could benefit from. The team are holding information events for people to learn more about timebanking. People who sign up at the events will have their account credited with two hours, to help them get started. To find out more about the scheme and what skills people are looking for, or to see when the next information events will be taking place, visit www.time4leicestershire.org.uk or call 0116 305 0705.

Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk
You’ve probably noticed that the roads and footways around Coalville are looking a bit shabby these days? Even the patches on our roads have patches on them now. We live in one of the richest countries in the world, but, when you look down at your feet, you wouldn’t think so. Should we expect better? Get used to it There’s a phrase I keep hearing at County Hall these days: ‘managing expectations’. In 2013-14 Leicestershire Highways had £6m a year to spend on maintaining our roads. They now have £1m a year to spend. There is a backlog of repairs that would cost £16m to put right. There is no money for structural maintenance and 54% of our unclassified roads like the one outside your house - now need treatment. As your Gran used to say, ‘a stitch in time saves nine’. Without that treatment our roads will be vulnerable to bad weather and, when we do get a Government willing to repair them, will cost a lot more to fix. Councils are at breaking point Leicestershire has an ageing population and as people become frail, they are more likely to need social care. Some families don’t cope with the pressure of low wages, high rents and precarious employment. The Council has seen a 12% rise in the number of children who need to be taken into care. The Children and Families service needs an extra £20m over the next four years just to stand still. The County Council doesn’t get a grant from central Government these days. They are depending on ratepayers like you to stump up another 3.99% in Council Tax. Even with your help, there will still be an £80m gap by 2024. No longer protecting the most vulnerable The County Council has a statutory duty to transport children with disabilities to school up until the age of 16. Specialist schools are often a long way from a child’s home and the cost of Special Educational Needs Transport is increasing year on year putting a demand on the Council’s budget. New national regulations now mean that all children have to remain in education and training until age 18. When the rules changed, the Government did not update the Council’s duty to provide transport, and this has left the families of children age 16-18 with disabilities in a difficult position. A ‘personal budget’ to get a learning-disabled, wheelchair-using child to school is no use if it won’t pay for specialist support and a specially adapted taxi. The real cost of caring less Meanwhile, in Adult Social Care, officers are adopting a new ‘Target Operating Model’, meeting with service users and their carers with the aim of ‘enabling independence’. In everyday English, people with learning difficulties, dementia or physical disabilities are being asked to cope with less help. And maybe they will. Until, with no carer coming in, they get lonely, or go for a little wander, or have a fall, or get a chest or urine infection from being sat all alone too long. The cost to the NHS of treating depression or a broken hip or pneumonia, or the cost to the Police of searching for someone who can’t remember their way home, won’t be recorded against the County Council budget. But you will be paying for it all the same. Managing to get fined There are some people who still think they can dump an old fridge outside their house and the Council will pick it up along with the rest of the rubbish. I am afraid we all need to be managing our own expectations as to what Councils will and will not do these days. If you can’t manage the Council fee for bulky waste collection, you can expect a hefty fine for Fly-tipping. People on some benefits can get two free bulky waste collections a year. MP Andrew Bridgen M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk
I appreciate there is a growing concern regarding the spread of the coronavirus. As I write this, the Prime Minister has warned that there could be a very significant expansion in the number of cases, and we have seen people infected in towns such as Buxton which has led to a lockdown and school closure. Let me reassure you that the NHS is well prepared to deal with incidents like this, and I am assured that the Government has a clear path to ensure the public is protected. The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has announced strengthened legal powers to bolster public health protections against the coronavirus. The regulations have been put in place to reduce the risk of further human-to-human transmission in this country by keeping individuals in isolation where public health professionals believe there is a reasonable risk an individual may have the virus. The UK is one of the first countries to have developed a worldleading test for the new coronavirus, and the NHS is ready to respond appropriately to any cases that emerge. Clinicians in both primary and secondary care have already received advice, covering initial detection and investigation of possible cases, infection prevention and control, and clinical diagnostics. The Government has also provided £20 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations to produce a vaccine to combat coronavirus, but this will take time. UK aid to the World Health Organisation (WHO) will also help prevent the spread of the virus in developing countries, by supporting them to rapidly identify and care for patients with symptoms. Additional experts funded by UK aid will be deployed to the WHO to help coordinate the international response all these actions will help the international response to what is approaching a world pandemic. It is clear that the virus will be with us for some time, but I know my ministerial colleagues and others are working around the clock to ensure to ensure the public is protected. I was extremely disappointed last month when the Government decided to proceed with the HS2, project despite the extraordinary increase in its cost. As I told the Prime Minister when he made the announcement, “HS2 is unloved and unwanted, and has been grossly mismanaged. It very adversely affects my constituents. This could well be an albatross around this Government’s and the country’s neck, and does it not set the bar very low for the delivery of infrastructure projects on time and on budget by all future Governments.” I have made the arguments against HS2 many times so I won’t get into that again. I still think that the most flawed part of the route is phase 2b from Birmingham to Leeds the part that affects our district. To have the East Midlands station at Toton is a nonsense as there will be further huge infrastructure cost in trying to link a small village in Nottinghamshire to the rest of the East Midlands. I have yet to meet anyone who wishes to travel from London to Toton ! It would make more sense to slow the route down and have more stations on the line, which at least would provide some benefit to the communities adversely affected. There is to be a review of how costs can be reduced on this part of the route and I will be contributing towards this whilst continuing to oppose the concept of the project. I will oppose any moves to reduce costs through reducing compensation for those affected or environmental protections. What would make more sense is to reopen the Ivanhoe Line and I have had meetings with the Rail minister to support the bid for funding from Government’s £500 million fund for restoring disused railway lines. I would like to acknowledgement the hard work that had been carried out by the Campaign to reopen the Ivanhoe Line (CRIL) in presenting a submission to the Department of Transport and thank them and my colleagues in Parliament Heather Wheeler, Kate Griffiths and Luke Evans for their support to get trains running through our constituency again. Coalville is the 5th largest town in the U.K. without a railway station and Swadlincote is the 7th so I remain optimistic that we have a good case to present to the Government. Affordable Homes Development In Coalville Given The Go Ahead
Article by North West Leicestershire District Council An application for 130 affordable homes on land in Coalville was approved by North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Planning Committee on Tuesday 11 February. The application for the new homes on land off Jackson Street and Wentworth Road in the town includes an area of public open space. The developer proposes that 75% of the homes will be rented, with 25% offered for shared ownership. There were no objections in relation to highways, flooding or drainage from statutory authorities. Councillor Nigel Smith, Chair of the Planning Committee said: “It is unusual to receive an application for a development of solely affordable homes. This scheme provides 130 affordable homes in Coalville, which we welcome. The development also includes ten bungalows, more than is normally secured on a site of this size.” Agendas, papers and minutes for Planning Committee can be found at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ meetings. Planning Committee meets every month and is a public meeting – members of the public are welcome to attend. Any member of the public wishing to address Planning Committee must register to do so before midday on the Friday before the committee meeting.

COALVILLE AQUATICS SUPPLIES For All Your Aquatic Needs
Land Rear Of Ashby Road Tip I spent A few hours taking a look at the rear of the waste site at the back of the tip after someone brought to my attention their concerns that electronic goods had been seen dumped just over the boundary, which have obviously been chucked over the fence. I must say it was incredible the amount of rubbish at the back of the tip. Computer screens, TVs, car seats and lots of other household items. I asked the cabinet member for waste disposal at County Hall to take action to retrieve the items which are scattered and polluting the neighbouring land next to the waste disposal site. I am pleased to announce that the officers have replied to my request and they have agreed to clean up the site and remove all electronic items.
Excellent range of Aquariums available. New stock of Tropical, Cold Water fish & live plants arriving every week. Special offers on Fish of the Week. Gravel, Rocks, Sand and plant substrate plus a large range of Ornaments & decor. All your aquatic needs & help in one place.

Former Red House High Street Coalville I have asked the council enforcement team to take action against the owners of the former red house pub due to the site being insecure and dangerous. Yet again more vandalism Is taking place daily, and the is site being left in a dangerous state and open to attack from further vandalism. It makes me wonder if the owner is deliberately leaving this building unsecured so it can be set on fire. Its totally unacceptable that this site is not properly secure and clear from all waste. Action must be taken otherwise this building will become a death trap and a major fire risk to local residents and businesses in the area. To date there as been several attempts by youngsters to burn this building down which luckily was stopped before it was able to get out of hand. The council enforcement team have opened a case file so let’s hope action is taken before it’s to late.

Local Company Continues Environmental Awareness Article by Gemma Patel
The T Bird Gifts, based in Whitwick, is continuing to become more eco-friendly in the running of the business and by spreading awareness to its customers with a new Treebombs initiative. Treebombs are handmade seedballs, containing native UK Alder Tree seeds which create biodiverse habitat and grow quickly into strong carbon capturing trees. With every order of a gardenrelated product from The T Bird, such as a personalised hand trowel or garden fork, customers will be sent a Treebomb to scatter in open ground. 1 trillion trees need to be planted to stop climate change, so these seedballs, which do not need ‘planting’ in the traditional sense, are an easy way to make a difference. The T Bird is always on the lookout for more ways to help the planet and now, where possible, uses recycled and recyclable packaging, and creates Eco Bricks with the plastics they are not able to recycle. The company has also started using Splosh cleaning products, which are eco-friendly with no plastic waste and are now using recycled paper and recycled leaflets in their orders. To support a local business and do your bit for the environment, visit www.thetbird.co.uk to see their range of personalised gifts.
