Experience A Genuine English Country Fair:

Visit St James’ The Greater, Oaks-In-Charnwood, Country Fair Spring Bank Holiday Monday 29th May 2017 If you are in need of some entertainment for the whole family this spring bank holiday weekend, why not come along to the Oaks in Charnwood Country Fair on Monday 29th May at St James’ the Greater on the Oaks Road, in the heart of the idyllic Charnwood Forest? There has been an annual event for the benefit of this magnificent church since the 1940s when church garden parties were held on the vicarage lawn, attended by the grandees of the local community. This small and gentle affair has, over the decades, grown and expanded as it has become more popular with people from all over the area, and is now sited in the large field opposite the Oaks in Charnwood Tennis club. The Oaks Country Fair continues to grow year on year, and 2016 saw some 6000 people through the gates. There is plenty to see and do, for people of all ages, including arts & craft stalls, vintage car & tractor displays, a petting zoo, reptile tent and pony rides, the church raffle, a bouncy castle, fairground rides, face painting and country games such as skittles. There are always plenty of local businesses represented, and it’s a great opportunity to see what services are available in your area. Also visit the local history group tent, and discover the story of the Charnwood Forest. One of the highlights is always the Flower Festival in St James’ church itself, which was consecrated on the day of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and subsequently acquired a number of lances used that day in the Duke of Wellington’s victory, which are mounted inside. The floral decorations are created by the volunteers of the church, and are a spectacular centrepiece to the quiet, contemplative atmosphere inside – take a few minutes to relax away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – before the demonstration of St James’ bell ringers! A range of refreshments will be available throughout the day, including BBQ, ice-cream & fudge, and of course the classic country fair cake stall, and musical accompaniment will be provided by the Charnwood Symphonic Wind Orchestra. In addition, the ever popular Dog Show will be making a return at 1200 (get your bookings in) along with stalls manned by the Police & Fire Brigade who are there to inform and advise. Entry to the St James’ the Greater, Oaks in Charnwood, Country Fair is only £3 for adults, and free for under 16s; free parking is also available on site. The fair runs from 10:00-16:30, but why not make a weekend of it? Campers are welcome between 28th-30th for a small charge of only £5. For all inquiries please contact info@oaks-country-fair.co.uk

Textiles & Traditions At Clothing Exhibition History students at Ibstock Community College were treated to an exhibition of clothing and textiles by experts from Ibstock Historical Society. The ‘Clothing and Design’ exhibition was inspired by the number of drapers, milliners and other textiles-related workers based in and around Ibstock in previous generations. Students enjoyed the hands-on displays, which allowed them to try on items of vintage clothing and handle old fabrics. The exhibition tied in with students’ classroom work on the industrial revolution. History teacher Kevin Norman said: “It was a very hands-on event. Students could see examples of the fabrics and designs that were around at the time and see the links with Leicestershire textiles traditions. It seemed to go very successfully. In the past, the exhibition has focused on hardhitting topics such as war and the machinery of the industrial revolution so this year’s theme was the opportunity for a different kind of history.” Every year, Ibstock Historical Society stages a local history exhibition for the people of Ibstock and the surrounding area. The event is held for one day at Ibstock Community College and for the second day at Ibstock Palace in the village. Both events are open to the public.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service.

Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that

obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Coalville & Hugglescote areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Latest News From Spring has sprung and at Woodside we knew the signs even before we started to notice the new leaves on the trees or the birds singing and getting ready to build their nests! You see we have a problem which seems to get earlier and more dramatic at this time of the year. Kittens! Okay so yes they are sweet... and cute... and lovely..... But the thing is there are too many being born and not enough people wanting to adopt them. The figures are quite astounding. Did you know that an average cat can have 1-8 kittens per litter and 2-3 litters per year? During her productive life, one un-neutered female cat could have more than 100 kittens. Without neutering, a single pair of cats and their kittens could produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years! The figures however mask the health risks to the sexually active cat population, whether homed or feral. This can include feline aids, leukaemia, cat-flu, infections from fight wounds which can cause serious issues for an untreated cat, not to mention the high mortality on the roads as they roam to find a mate. So why are we finding this such a challenge at Woodside? We aren’t the only animal centre to have this difficulty but I can only describe the challenges it brings from our prospective. Early each spring numerous pregnant stray cats are handed to us and they have not been microchipped we have no way of knowing where they come from. We have space for approximately 70 cats in the cattery and have had to build up a network of fosterers who help at this point by taking these pregnant cats into their homes. The mum is health checked and monitored during her pregnancy and our fosterers are able to assess the mum and encourage her to be more friendly towards humans – she may have been abandoned and therefore not trust us at this point. Pregnant and nursing cats need to be calm and certainly prefer being in a home as opposed to our more clinical, busy and noisy environment in the cattery. Of equal importance is that mum is able to have her kittens in safety and they grow up being used to household routines and noises and to being handled from a young age. After the vet has said they are ready to go to their forever homes, the feline family are returned to Woodside.

All of them are neutered to prevent further unwanted litters, they have been health checked and are fully – vaxed and have been treated for fleas and worms. They are also microchipped. Mum will often be adopted with one of her kittens but generally people tend to choose the kittens first. Woodside is hugely successful with rehoming kittens and that is fantastic. However, to put it into perspective, this leaves us battling to encourage visitors to take on the “older” cats. Unspayed females can produce their first litter after reaching sexual maturity at 4 months of age. It’s a myth that cats (and dogs for that matter) need to have a first litter. And it’s often difficult for owners to find homes for kittens their female has. Cats make delightful pets (I know as we have 5 rescue adults) but as with all pets they need to be planned for. The fact that Woodside has so many adults looking for homes means that we have to ensure that our cats are all neutered prior to adoption. So, what can you do to help? • If you want to adopt a cat(s)

Two Newfoundland Dogs Find New Homes After Makeover By The Groom Room Two Newfoundland dogs - four year old Koda and three year old Rio have found new homes after a dramatic makeover. The dogs came into Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicester branch of the RSPCA – along with a further Newfoundland, 8 year old Bethan, after their owner had fallen ill and could no longer take care of them. All three were in a sorry state with long, matted coats which were causing them serious problems. “The animals were really struggling to see, had problems with their ears and were visibly uncomfortable,” explained Kim Talbot, Animal Care Specialist at Woodside. “Their coats were so long and matted we couldn’t even carry out the neutering procedure. We knew the dogs would need professional grooming, but that it would be expensive for such large dogs.” But a local grooming service – The Groom Room, based at Pets at Home, Fosse Park – came to the rescue, inviting the three for a much-needed pampering session. Koda and Rio were the first to benefit from a thorough wash and trim. “They looked amazing when they’d had their coats sorted out,” said Kim. “You could actually see what stunning dogs they are! And they just seemed so much happier.” Koda and Rio were both were snapped up the following week and are now settling nicely into their new homes. Bethan, who came into the centre wary of people and in need of a little more paw holding from Kim, had to wait for her pampering session. But she is now looking very fine, has been signed off by the vet and is ready for a special family to offer her a new forever home too. “We’re so grateful to the Groom Room,” said Kim. “If they hadn’t stepped in, we wouldn’t have been able to get the same result for the dogs.” “It costs nearly £20,000 per week to run the Centre and we are entirely reliant on donations and support from organisations like the Groom Room to be able to help dogs like Koda, Rio and Bethan.” Michelle Capwell, The Groom Rooms Salon Manager said: “We were really pleased to help and it was lovely to see the girls so transformed. We’re delighted that Koda and Rio have found new homes and wish Bethan the same good luck.” If you are interested in adopting Bethan, contact the centre on: 0116 233 6677, or visit Woodside Animal Centre, 190 Scudamore Road, Leicester, LE3 1UQ.

Wyatt Blames Tory Bosses For Decline In Trade In Coalville Cllr Michael Wyatt has attacked the Council once again for introducing free parking after 3pm which he warned would decrease footfall instead of increasing it. After three months of this new scheme which Councillor Wyatt called crazy it as now become clear from local businesses that they have suffered a 30% decrease in trade. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "I warned the council this would happen but typically then didn't listen. Free parking after 3pm as reduced trade by a whopping 30% Most independent traders close at 4pm and cannot afford to stay open just for a couple of hours. What Coalville needs is free parking everyday all day. It's absolutely crazy that the council and the opposition Party, the so called Labour Party Councillors support this Barney policy. Clearly Labour and Tories are no longer supporters of small businesses and care about our Town. I will be writing to the Leader urging him to drop this ridiculous policy that's killing our Town."

New Safety Railing Coming Soon Cllr Michael Wyatt has received confirmation that new safety railings will be installed at the railway crossing in Bardon Road in Coalville. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "The safety railings have been needed for a number of years. The vast increase in traffic using Bardon Road and the potential increase in rail freight in the future as made it more urgent to have railings installed. Having railings can only be to everyone benefit, and the appalling state of the road around the area will also be renewed due to major cracks and in some cases subsidence which is obviously a danger to vehicles and pedestrians using the section."

The Coalville Adult School Drama Group presents ‘Hitchcock Blonde’ by Terry Johnson, from 7th – 10th June, 7.30pm, at Bridge Road, Coalville. ANDREW BRIDGEN

DR TERRI EYNON

Not another election! With two Elections back to back, I bet your letterbox has been working hard these last few weeks. By the time you read this, the County Council elections will have been fought and won. The General Election will still be in full swing. On the doorstep a lot of voters are still saying they ‘don’t know’ who to vote for. Some will have given up on trying to work out who to trust and decide to stay at home. I think that is a terribly sad state of affairs. When I was a medical student, I spent three months in South Africa. I worked in a mission hospital in Kwa Zulu. This was before Nelson Mandela was released, before apartheid was abolished and before black people got the vote. The people I was helping to treat had no say whatever in how their country was run. Living in an area officially designated as a Bantustan or native homeland, they were still not safe. The unaccountable whites-only government were, on a whim, able to requisition the Zulus best pasture for military use. Just before I arrived, the government had moved a whole tribe to less fertile land. There was no consultation, no scrutiny, no Councillor or MP to speak for them. The people suffered. Their cattle starved. Many of their children died of malnutrition. In countries like South Africa where, for ordinary people, getting the vote is a relatively recent event, people will queue at the polling stations before they open in the morning. They know the risk of being governed by someone who does not really care about you. The Art of Persuasion So, how do politicians persuade you to vote for them? I suppose it is worth noting that sometimes

those with a financial interest in staying in power don't care to do that. All they have to do is persuade you that politicians are “all the same”. If you believe them, you won’t take time out from your busy life to read the leaflets and decide who is going to really work for you and those you care for. Even if you do bother to read the leaflets, you may end up none the wiser. The art of persuasion has come a long way over the last few decades. The success of the advertising industry shows that people like short, snappy soundbites. People like alliteration – words that keep repeating the same sound. Just like I used in the last sentence when I said “short, snappy sound-bites”. People like short phrases that make it easy to remember what they want to buy. Rather like “Beanz Meanz Heinz”. So, instead of burdening you with facts and statistics, politicians have learned to keep repeating memorable phrases. Alliterative phrases such as “strong and stable leadership” that don’t exactly tell you what this particular recipe for motherhood-and-apple-pie might actually have in it. What should you do then, if you want to be a sensible and rational voter? When the next candidate or party worker knocks on your door, don’t just say “I haven’t decided” and shoo them away. Ask them, “What are you going to do for me? My mates? My street?”. Try to listen between the words. Find out what they really mean by what they say. Then, when you have decided, don't leave it up to others to choose for you. Vote! Applications for postal votes close 5pm Tuesday 23rd May. www.yourvotematters.co.uk/howdo-i-vote/voting-by-post

I’m sure many of you were surprised by the announcement this week by Theresa May that she’s calling a General Election. Having witnessed events in Parliament in recent months, I am not shocked by the decision. The fact is that Labour, Liberal Democrat and Scottish Nationalist MP’s are determined to weaken our hand when negotiating our exit from the EU. In recent weeks, Labour have threatened to vote against the final agreement we reach with the European Union. The Liberal Democrats have said they want to “grind” the business of government “to a

standstill”. The Scottish National Party say they will vote against the legislation that formally repeals Britain’s membership of the European Union. In addition to this, unelected members of the House of Lords have vowed to fight us every step of the way. All the other parties are doing is playing political games and causing uncertainty about the future. An election and a mandate from the people will strengthen the Prime Minister’s negotiating hand in Europe. Division in Westminster, and the Government’s small majority, risks weakening a Government’s hand in its negotiations with the EU. The fact is that every vote cast for Theresa May and the Conservatives will strengthen Britain’s hand in the Brexit

negotiations, and we need this election now to secure the strong and stable leadership the country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond. It is the only way to ensure we have strong leadership, certainty and stability. An election now will give the country stability and certainty for a full five years, not just up to the point at which we leave the European Union but beyond it too. An election will also enable Theresa May to establish Britain as the strongest country in Europe, in economic growth and

national security. This as we seek to make the long term decisions that will give everyone a chance to get on in life, by building enough affordable housing, increasing our record investment in the NHS and making sure there is a good school place for every child. I am also lobbying the Prime Minister that the White Elephant that is the HS2 scheme should be dropped from our Manifesto for Government. So it is clear that the choice in this election is strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives – or weak and unstable coalition government, led by Jeremy Corbyn and propped up and dictated to by the Nicola Sturgeon and the Scottish Nationalists.
