Bus Depot Transformation Complete As New Car Showroom Opens In Coalville Article by NW Leicestershire District Council
A former bus depot in Coalville has opened as a car showroom, bringing new jobs to the town and regenerating a derelict site on Ashby Road. With support from North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) grant schemes the owners of the new Desirablecar.com showroom have been able to transform the former depot into a modern facility that combines a workshop with a sales area for their quality used car business. The project has received grants of £50,000 from the NWLDC Frontage Improvement Scheme and £25,000 from the Enterprising North West Leicestershire scheme. As part of the partnership with NWLDC the building owners Deepak Mavani and Paul Westwood have worked to preserve some of the iconic façade of the former depot while also adding wood-effect cladding to the exterior to ensure the development is in-keeping with the district’s National Forest identity. The effort to preserve the façade of the building and regenerate an historic building and give it a new use and positive attractive presence in the town has drawn praise from the Coalville Heritage Society, which has presented the owners with an historic image of the depot as a thank you for the quality of the work. Having stood empty since 2011, the building was originally built in 1925, and was one of the earliest purpose built bus depots in the country and home to Midland Red bus company. During the 1930s almost 50 buses were in operation from the site. NWLDC’s support for the project comes as part of its Coalville regeneration agenda. This has seen businesses across the town able to apply for funding to expand or improve their businesses. So far over £450,000 has been given to 38 businesses in the North West Leicestershire through three different district council grant schemes. Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business and Regeneration at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We have a huge role to play in encouraging investment and regeneration in Coalville, and offering financial support through our grant scheme is proving very successful. Ashby Road is a key route into the town, and with new homes on the former police station site, along with the opening of this new showroom at the former derelict bus depot, this part of Coalville has gone from an abandoned-looking area, to an area of regeneration. We are really pleased with the look of the new building and we wish Mr Mavani and Mr Westwood the best of luck with their new enterprise.” Paul Westwood said: “We’re delighted that our new car showroom is open for business and proud that this historic building has been brought back to life. The support and encouragement we’ve had from the council throughout has been excellent, and we share their enthusiasm in being a part of regenerating Coalville. We’re delighted too that the Coalville Heritage Society has recognised our efforts to preserve the iconic look of the building, something that was a real priority for us throughout our work to regenerate it.” Steve Duckworth, Chairman of Coalville Heritage Society, said: “We are fully behind the regeneration of Coalville, but firmly believe that this effort needs to include an effort to preserve the history of this important coalmining town. The work done by Deepak and Paul in collaboration with NWLDC sets a great example of how this can be achieved and we’re delighted with the look of the building. We wish them every success with their new business.” For more information on the support that can be offered by NWLDC’s Business Focus team, visit www.nwleics.gov.uk/funding_for_businesses

CHRISTMAS Coalville Army And Air Cadets Join Veterans To Honour Local Victoria Cross Recipients Article by Rebekah Harrison-Page
Air cadets from 1188 (Coalville) Squadron joined with Coalville Army Cadets and members of the British Legion to pay their respects to two local men who were awarded the Victoria Cross. Coalville Air cadets joined with the local army cadets and members of the Whitwick Branch of the Royal British Legion on Saturday 26th October in two acts of remembrance. Everyone met at the cemetery in Whitwick to remember Thomas Elsdon Ashford. He was a private in The Royal Fusiliers, British Army during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry during a sortie from Kandahar, on the 16th August, 1880. He helped rescue and carry Private Massey for a distance of over 200 yards, under the fire of the enemy. He was assisted by Lieutenant William St. Lucien Chase. Private Massey had taken shelter in a blockhouse. Several times they were compelled to rest, but they persevered in bringing him to a place of safety. After his military service, Ashford settled in Thringstone, Leicestershire and served as a postman for many years. He was married in Thringstone Church to Betsy Ann Sisson on 29 January 1891. He later moved to the neighbouring village of Whitwick and died on 13 February 1913. He was laid to rest in Whitwick Cemetery, in the presence of thousands of mourners, though the grave lay unmarked for many years, until a monument was provided by the local British Legion. His VC is in the Royal Fusiliers Museum at the Tower of London. The cadets and veterans then moved to the graveside of William Dolman Bees who is buried in the cemetery on London Rd in Coalville. He was a private in the 1st Battalion, The Derbyshire Regiment (later The Sherwood Foresters), during the Second Boer War. It was on 30 September 1901 at Moedwil, South Africa that he was awarded the VC. Private Bees was one of the Maxim-gun detachment, at Moedwil, six men out of nine had been hit. Hearing his wounded comrades asking for water, he went forward, under a heavy fire, to a spruit held by Boers about 500 yards ahead of the gun, and brought back a kettle full of water. In going and returning he had to pass within 100 yards of some rocks also held by Boers, and the kettle which he was carrying was hit by several bullets. His VC is in the Ashford Collection at Duxford. The cadets and veterans then made their way to the clock tower for the launch of this year's poppy appeal. Flt Lt Rebekah Harrison-Page RAFAC, the commanding officer of 1188 Coalville Squadron said “ I am really pleased the cadets were able to join with the members of the Royal British Legion again this year to remember those who have gone before. The weather was bitterly cold and it was raining but the cadets did the squadron proud".

Top Tips For Preparing Your Home For Winter
Also check for rot, warping and flaking if your gutters are old; it may be time to replace them with new uPVC gutters and drainpipes which will also improve the look of your home for many years to come, plus they are low maintenance too.
The colder months are creeping in on us and it will soon be time to dig out the gloves, scarves and hats. But how can you prepare your home for winter?
Check The Roof While you are up the ladder, check for cracked or missing tiles as these will let rain in, causing damp and even rot. If you aren’t keen to get up high on a ladder, it may be worth getting a professional in to inspect your roof for you. If your conservatory has a polycarbonate roof, it most likely becomes a cold, unused space in the winter. There are many benefits to changing the roof of your conservatory to a warmer one. A tiled roof is very energy efficient and they are proven to reduce heating bills. And whatever the season, a tiled replacement conservatory roof will have you and your family enjoying this space with a comfortable temperature all year round. By ordering one now, Progress Windows can have it installed before the cold sets in.

Whitwick & District U3A Article by Sue Calcutt
The General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A was on Friday 15th November. The Special guests at this event were the acoustic duo Steve and Carol Robson who perform under the name “Fool’s Gold”. They presented their show “Beat the Drum” which was originally produced for Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion. Beat the Drum is a commemoration of WWI, examining the conflict through the true story of Durham miner, Michael Heaviside VC. Michael Heaviside was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Battle of Arras in 1917. A Fool’s Gold show is rooted in music but is much more than just a concert performance. Their shows use live music, story and projected visuals to weave a fascinating story, so appropriate in this month of remembrance. Whitwick and District U3A is a thriving and friendly organisation for retired people with a wide variety of Interest Groups. All the learning and social activities are run on a self-help basis and enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere. The monthly General Meetings provide an ideal opportunity to chat to existing members and see the options available. As the U3A is non-political and non-religious, all are welcome. To find out more, including details of the Christmas General Meeting on 20th December when the speaker will be John Whitehead, please visit www. whitwicku3a.org.uk. The General Meetings are held at St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL; please come along at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start.
In this article we will cover some of our top tips to get your home winter ready, including; • Give your radiators some TLC • Give your gutters a clear-out • Check the roof • Wrapping up • Leaving the cold at the door • Keeping the boiler ticking over • Block up that unused chimney • Upgrade your windows • In your garden Some of these tips may be quite easy to do whereas others could be a little bit more of a hassle, but once done, you may notice a difference! Let’s take a look at some of our top tips. Bleed Your Radiators Bleeding a radiator can seem like a daunting task. But it’s really easy and will help keep your home warm this winter. If your radiators are cold at the top and hot at the bottom, that means they need bleeding. To do this, turn off your heating and get a cloth and a bleed key ready. At the top of your radiator, turn the valve anti-clockwise until you hear a hiss (don’t worry, it’s only air). Hold a rag below to catch any water that drips. Once water starts to flow, tighten the valve up and you’re done. By setting your heating on low during the day, either manually or on a timer, your house will stay warm enough to prevent frozen pipes becoming an issue. An hour in the morning and an hour in the evening will be enough. This is especially important if you are planning to go away during the winter months. Give Your Gutters A Clear-Out Soon the leaves are going to start falling and although it is not a nice job, it is important to make sure your guttering is clear of sticks and leaves. Once you’re up the ladder, make sure the pipes can carry water away from your home. This prevents damp from getting into your walls which can cause damage.
6 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
Wrapping Up Other than checking your loft insulation is up to standard, you can also keep your pipes cosy by wrapping then with lagging, stopping them from freezing and avoiding blockages and burst pipes. (Garages and where pipes are outside are the main problem areas). Know where your stopcock is just in case of flooding. Leaving The Cold At The Door If you are feeling the chill from draughts in your home, a good place to start checking where they are coming from is gaps under your doors, around your letterbox and the edges of window frames. Autumn is a popular time for homeowners to replace their old doors with new energy efficient composite ones. Not only is there a wide range of styles and colours (giving your home a delightful new look in winter), but by having a Progress composite door installed in your home, you will reduce the amount of energy you use which means lower energy bills. At the end of October our clocks move back an hour giving us less daylight hours. Protecting your family & home is always important and in the dark, the added security of a Yale lock will always bring that extra peace of mind. All of our
door & window components are designed & tested to the highest BSI security criteria. Keeping That Boiler Ticking Over During the winter months, it is always a good idea to heat your home for at least an hour every day, even if you are away. This will keep things running smoothly – if you don’t know how to set your timer and don’t have the manual, you will always be able to find instructions online. While you are checking your boiler, make sure the pressure is around 1 bar (the pressure gauge will be on the front, or underneath your boiler where the pipes are). If it is too high or low, get an engineer in for a service. Block Up That Unused Chimney An open chimney will suck up much of the heating from a room. While you can buy rubber chimney balloons to stop this happening, an easy effective way to stop your heat escaping is to simply use an old pillow. Just remember to remove it if you do decide to light a fire! Upgrade Your Windows If you haven’t already, installing double glazed windows will significantly affect the temperature of your home and reduce heating bills. Progress Windows are able to offer the highest energy efficient rating A+14 window, exceeding industry standards and with no energy loss whatsoever. A window from Progress Windows will keep the warmth in and be draught free. In Your Garden If you have any large trees in your garden, it is important that they are well trimmed before the frost sets in. Winter temperatures bring the risk of trees freezing, resulting in broken branches, and possibly damaging your home or vehicles. Always keep pathways & drains clear from leaves and debris. Not only are these a potential slip hazard, but they can cause blockages in your drains, resulting in flooding on paths which can be a big problem when freezing weather sets in. New Leisure Centre Given Green Light
Article by NW Leicestershire District Council A new, state of the art leisure centre in Coalville was given the green light on Tuesday 15 October 2019 when it received planning permission. North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Planning Committee approved the application to build the £22 million facility on land off Stephenson Way. In a partnership between NWLDC and Everyone Active, the leisure operator will build and operate the new leisure centre, whilst the council will own the building. The new facility will replace Hermitage Leisure Centre, which will stay open until the new one is ready. Work will start on the new leisure centre in January 2020, with the build taking around 18 months. Described as a ‘parkland destination centre’, the new Coalville Leisure Centre will reflect its woodland setting in the National Forest, with impressive wooden beams swooping down over the pool area and a large glass front playing host to the reception area and café. A trim trail, natural play spaces and a cycle track will be featured in the grounds around the centre. The plans show how the building will achieve the environmental accreditation BREEAM status, with LED lighting throughout, air source heat pumps, electric car charging points and photovoltaic panels on the roof that will harvest energy from daylight, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. Inside the building, the gym will have views across the parkland surrounding the centre, with the range of other facilities including three squash courts, clip and climb, spin studio, an eight court sports hall, an eight lane swimming pool and a learner pool. No objections were raised by statutory consultees, although a number of objections were received in respect of the principle of development on an Area of Separation. Speaking about the decision, Chairman of Planning Committee, Councillor Nigel Smith said: “This was a highly anticipated and complex application which the committee very carefully considered before coming to the decision to approve. There are lots of important considerations with this application, including access, the development within the area of separation between Coalville and Whitwick and the environmental credentials of the building. The committee agreed that the overarching positive contribution that this new leisure centre will make to health and wellbeing in the district, the exceptional high quality of design and the detailed mitigation for its impact on its surroundings were the main reasons behind the decision to grant planning permission.” Speaking for the application at the meeting, NWLDC’s Head of Community Services Paul Sanders
8 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
said: “This project represents an impressive £22 million investment into the district’s leisure facilities and presents an unrivalled opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of our current and future residents. The new centre and parkland will open for all and will be fully accessible, with a particular focus on activities that reduce inactivity amongst children and young people, older people and also people with disabilities. It is a scheme that we, as a design team, are immensely proud of. The proposals are fully costed, deliverable and achievable.” Dan Hicks, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said “It’s brilliant news that plans for the new state-of-the-art Coalville Leisure Centre have been granted and we can start work to bring this fantastic facility to life. It’s been an exciting few months, with the completion of the first phase of renovations at Hood Park in September, and now we have this great development on the plans for Coalville. The new leisure centre will be a great addition to the local community and will offer an amazing variety of ways for people to get active. We’re proud to be delivering improved leisure facilities to North West Leicestershire in partnership with the council and we look forward to starting this exciting new project now we have the green light to go ahead.” Planning Reference 19/01343/ FULM

Abba Comes To Thringstone Article by Nita Pearson
Thank You For The Music came to Charles Booth Centre, Thringstone on 12th October for a night dedicated to the music of Abba. Treating the audience to all the hits, the dance floor was heaving with everybody having fun and showing some very nifty footwork! A spokesperson for the centre said ‘It was a great night, and it was lovely to see so many people coming along, dancing the night away and having a good time. We would like to thank Jackie and Sophie for putting on such a first rate performance. That is what we, at Charles Booth Centre, aim to provide for the local community – top quality entertainment at a decent price, and that is certainly what was delivered The centre has a wide range of entertainment coming up between now and the end of the year and would like to thank the event team and the volunteers for their work in providing things like this for us all to enjoy’. Please www.charlesboothcentre.org.uk for more information, or follow them on facebook and twitter.

Or Could You Adopt One Of Our Long-Stay Residents? JJ and Blackie are keeping their paws crossed that Santa Claus will be coming to town and hoping they are on the ‘nice’ list! Sadly, it will be the second Christmas at the Centre for lovely boy JJ. He’s an eight-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier who is boisterous and bouncy but loving and friendly. He loves tummy tickles and cuddles. He is asking Santa for a lovely new home where he can be the only pet and the centre of attention. Gentle Blackie is a 12-year-old domestic long-haired cat and came to us when her owner passed away. She is sweet and matronly and loves fuss and attention. She can be talkative especially if you stop stroking her! Her Christmas wish is for a home where someone is around most of the time to keep her company. Thank You For your support - we don’t receive any funding and we rely on the kindness and generosity of our local community to help us rescue more than 400 dogs and cats each year. I confirm that I am a UK taxpayer and have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand the Charity will reclaim 25p on every £1 that I give. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year it is my responsibility to pay any difference. Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk
Are you feeling overwhelmed? For some people in and around Coalville that isn’t just a feeling. The recent floods in Hugglescote caused real distress and disruption to people’s lives. I am immensely grateful to District Cllr Russell Johnson, Parish Councillors Clark Robinson, David Wood and Parish Clerk Simon Weaver, as well as local residents including Steve Palmer for the work they did, not only during the wet but in continuing to raise the issue since. Whose Flood Is It Anyway? Leicestershire County Council is the Lead Local Flood Authority in Leicestershire. But what does that actually mean in practice? The answer is in the name. It is supposed to ‘lead’ other ‘flood risk management’ partners and get them to work together to manage the risk of flooding in Leicestershire. But, under the Flood and Water Management Act (2010) LCC is only responsible for some kinds of floods and not others. It is responsible for Local Flood Risk which is defined as surface water flooding, ordinary watercourse flooding and groundwater flooding. If there are floods due to sewers, these belong to Severn Trent. Floods due to blocked gullies belong to Highways. Farmers are supposed to deal with floods from watercourses that cross their land. If a flood is due to a river breaking its banks, then is up to the Environment Agency to sort it out. Another group who are key to flood risk in the future are housing developers and District Planners. Climate Change Gets Real It would be nice if water stayed inside the neat categories designed by the Government. Keeping surface water and sewerage apart on paper doesn’t actually work in practice. In reality, Coalville still has combined Victorian sewers which take surface water and foul sewage. New housing developments are required to put in separate pipes. These are then simply connected up to the existing combined network. Thanks to climate change, heavy rain overwhelms the system with storm water and filthy sewage flows into the local brook. The existing combined system takes surface water and sewage from Hugglescote to Kelham Bridge. It is pumped from there uphill towards Hoo Ash then gravity fed to the Snarrows sewage works near Grace Dieu. Severn Trent have laid new sewers to cope with the new houses. At some point they need to improve the pump station at Kelham Bridge. The job of the County Council, as Lead Local Flood Agency is to co-ordinate the way different agencies manage flood risk and drainage, and plan for emergencies. As a County Councillor, I have asked officers to have a look at how well this is working, particularly when it comes to planning for big housing developments like SE Coalville. Be Aware And Prepare For The Worst In the meantime, we cannot have filthy flood water threatening people’s homes. The Parish Council are working closely with Severn Trent to investigate what went wrong last month and what needs to change. You can help yourself and your neighbours by noting the following numbers: • If a person is in danger from a flood call 999. • If a house or business is at risk from a flood call 101 • If you need sandbags to protect your home ring the District Council on 01530 454545 • If you see blocked gullies on the Highway or flooding from a small watercourse contact LCC 0116 305 0001 or online www.leicestershire. gov.uk/roads-and-travel/road-maintenance/report-a-road-problem • If you see flooding from a mains water supply or sewer contact Severn Trent 0800 783 4444 www.stwater.co.uk/in-my-area/report-a-problem • If you see flooding from a main river or reservoir, contact the Environment Agency incident hotline 0800 80 70 60 • If you think your property may be at risk of flooding call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 or go online www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings and sign up for flood alerts • If in doubt look here for more advice www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ environment-and-planning/flooding-and-drainage/report-a-flood You can also make a personal flood plan or volunteer as a flood warden for your community. Cllr Michael Wyatt M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk
Wyatt Attacks Police And Council At Scrutiny Meeting Over Anti Social Behaviour In Coalville At the last Community Scrutiny I was able to tell both the police and the council that their actions to tackle anti social behaviour was appalling and needed to be improved dramatically. At the meeting I told them straight, what they are doing to address the problems of anti social behaviour is not working. They seemed to be more pro active in Ashby than Coalville and it’s making people think you don’t care. Also I told them that the current service if given points out of 10 would only get a maximum of 4 for effort. Anti social behaviour is a major problem and must be tackled or it will start to get out of control. The Police admitted they need to do more and urge residents and businesses to report any incident so they can show to those in charge further up the chain of command that more resources are needed locally. Steam Punk 2020 Event Coming To Coalville
EARAXXX- 08/2018
At the last Coalville special expense meeting members agreed to support a steam punk weekend in Coalville Park. We are determined to bring more events to Coalville, and events that appeal to different age groups and taste. Hopefully if this event happens in 2020 and it’s a success it could become an annual event that brings thousands of visitors into our town which will be a major boost to our local economy, and yet again put Coalville on the map. Wyatt Given Thumbs Up For Art Corridor For Coalville I have put forward the idea of turning Needhams Walk into an art corridor which would see it being used at various times of the year to help show off local talent and hopefully bring together groups to display various different ways to brighten up our town. The idea is to have a high-wire along Needhams Walk in Coalville so we can display various art work done by local children such as uniquely designed kites that are made from various materials to help promote recycling. It’s a great opportunity to have something completely different and unique to Coalville. The idea as so far gained the support from the Coalville special expense working party and senior council officers. It is now being looked at by the Leader and Chief Executive of the council. Hopefully with everyone’s support this potential project could be in place by the early summer next year.
