Arriva Time Table Changes 4th November 2017 Information supplied by Cllr Ozzy O’shea

I have been made aware that Arriva have submitted time table changes to the Traffic Commissioner I have asked officers at County Hall to look into the changes to see how they affect residents. This is a commercial decision of Arriva all of these routes are commercial routes none of which are funded by the County Council. The following is a summary of any alterations. 26 No Change 27 Minor timetable change. One weekday journey is changed by 7 minutes (07:32 journey brought back to 07:25 M-F from Leicester – Ratby) 29/29A/29X The 05.59 29A journey from Leicester M-F has been removed. A 06:22 journey has been introduced and now operates under 29X, however it does not serve Groby or Markfield. This means that the earliest time that Groby will be served by service 29 will be at 06:50 by the journey departing Leicester at 06:32. There has also been the addition of a second 06:32 journey (due to high demand) from Leicester M-F which terminates at Amazon. No journeys into Leicester have changed and there are no route changes proposed. The 23:15 journey from Amazon to Leicester has been retimed to 23:45 to accommodate shift times, and now operates under 29X. There are also some slight timetable changes by no more than 10 minutes.

Coalville Filled With Colour As 650 Enjoy Charity Run Hundreds of runners have helped thousands of pounds for charity at the second ever Coalville Colour Run. The fun run on Sunday 17th September was a huge success as more than 650 runners took to the streets in support of Leicestershire charity Living Without Abuse (LWA) – beating last year’s turnout of 500. The event, organised by LWA with the support of main sponsor North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), saw people pack the streets of Coalville after words of encouragement on the start line from LWA Head of Fund-raising Gina King and the council’s Chairman, Councillor Virge Richichi. At several points along the route, volunteers cannoned paint of all different colours onto the runners, while onlookers and marshals cheered them on. The event ended with a party in Coalville Park, with live music, food and drink, stalls, games and a very colourful Zumba session. Organisers are still counting the money raising with an announcement expected from LWA in due course. Gina King, organiser of Coalville Colour Run and Head Fund-raiser for Living Without Abuse, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that was part of the LWA’s second Coalville Colour Run. It was such an amazing day and I hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. The day was a massive success and I really could not have made this event as successful as it was without your help by entering and then joining us for our party in the park. The feedback I had on the day was absolutely fantastic, so once again thank you so much to everyone, especially our volunteers and our sponsors, for helping to make it happen.” Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “It was fantastic to see the Coalville Colour Run back bigger and better than last year – and for so much money to be raised for charity as a result. As a council we’re thrilled to support an event like this as part of our pledge to build confidence in Coalville. We believe that the colour run is a brilliant way of getting people together in the town and enjoying themselves, showcasing Coalville’s strong community spirit, and simply having lots of fun.” Shaun Gowtage, 26, from South Derbyshire, took part in the run for the first time this year. At the finish line he said: “It’s been great fun, and to have raised money for charity just by being involved is brilliant too. I can’t say Coalville is a place I’d been to before but there’s been a great atmosphere for the run and everyone seems to have loved it. I’d definitely come back and do it again - it’s something a bit different and much more fun than my usual Sunday morning jog!” Rob Jones, Empty Homes Team Leader at the council came to the fun run with his family as part of Team NWLDC. He said: "We've wanted to do one of these colour runs for a while but have never managed to get to one. We've all had a great time, it is such a great event."

CAFÉ 1804 - New Café Bar Opens At Market Bosworth Marina The team at Market Bosworth Marina are proud to announce the opening of Café 1804, a fully licensed café open from 9am to 6pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Manager Heidi welcomes the general public and the marina’s boaters in to the first floor Café, located in a stunning new building with panoramic views over the marina basin and of the Ashby Canal. In the heart of the Midlands countryside the Marina is just outside the picturesque and historic town of Market Bosworth, on the Warwickshire and Leicestershire borders.

Café 1804 aims to provide classic home cooked food finished with a twist. Coalville Poppy Appeal Launch And Remembrance Over the past year, the continuing conflicts in many parts of the world have never been far away from the headlines. During all of these battles, and throughout history, men and women have continued to put their own lives on the lines to protect our freedom.

Whitwick & District Whitwick and District U3A will hold its next General Meeting on Friday 20th October. If you are retired and looking for activities which are engaging and sociable for the cooler months, the U3A may be what you need. With a membership of over 270 local people and almost fifty varied Interest Groups, keeping busy and making new acquaintances is readily achievable. Group Leaders and others will be on hand at the General Meeting to answer any questions and pass on information about the opportunities on offer. The speaker at the October meeting will be Dr Julie Attard with the topic “Whitwick’s Big Dig”. The Big Dig took place over a weekend in July 2015 and proved to be a fascinating community event. Julie’s talk will reveal what was discovered about the ancient village of Whitwick. Not only did Julie coordinate the Big Dig, she also led the Charnwood Roots Project for its four-year duration. Her lively enthusiasm for archaeology should ensure an interesting presentation which will also include a short film made during the Big Dig by U3A member, Chris North. (Please note: this talk has been rearranged for October following its postponement last year.) To listen to Julie and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville, LE67 5RL. Please arrive at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. The U3A is a non-religious and nonpolitical organisation: everyone is welcome. Alternatively, please visit www.whitwicku3a.org.uk where full details of our thriving U3A can be found.

Whatever and wherever the conflict, many members of the Armed Forces and their loved ones have paid and continue pay a high price to do this job – death, injury or permanent scars. Well now is your opportunity to say thank you, as the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal is our chance to repay just one little bit of the debt we all owe to these people.

Thomas Giles Tennis Report A great summer of tennis this year for Thomas Giles. Thomas of Coalville has romped up the national/regional/county ranking tables for his 12U age group after winning success in a number of tournaments. This time last year Thomas was struggling to return to training and competition after a massive growth spurt which made his knees too painful for him to play. Thomas has worked hard all year with his fitness coach, Jon Coats of P6 Performance in the gym and out on court with his coaching team at My Tennis in Nottingham. His hard work has been rewarded with a shift in national ranking of 199 in July at the start of the summer to no 22 in the UK currently and no 1 in Leicestershire County and no 3 in the Midlands Region. Over the summer Thomas won regional competitions, singles and doubles at West Bridgford and singles at Leamington. He has made finals in U16 events playing some very strong opponents and he has also won U14 events with lots of runners up and semi-final places too. He particularly loved playing on the grass courts at the 62nd Official Cromer Junior Open Tournament where he achieved the semi-finals in 2 doubles events. Also on the grass in the summer Thomas was invited to a training day with Tim Henman and Dan Bloxham at the prestigious Wimbledon Tennis club. All of the finalists of the Road To Wimbledon competition were treated to an up close training session with Tim learning his techniques for serve and volley. Thomas was truly inspired at Wimbledon being able to play on the prestigious grass courts and also to have tours of the players areas and a behind the scenes view of Wimbledon. Last week was the Junior Leicestershire County Closed event where the boys and girls of Leicestershire all compete against each other for titles in many age group events. Thomas fought hard on the clay at the Leicestershire Lawn Tennis club. Some days having to play matches straight from school and not finishing until late into the evening. A great atmosphere all week and especially on finals day last Saturday where Thomas had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Mark Cox, former tennis player, coach and commentator. Thomas achieved a winning result in the Boys U14 Consolation event, runner up in the U14 doubles and quarter finals in the U12 singles too. Thomas also enjoys giving back to the sport he loves with some voluntary work. This year he has helped at a Visually Impaired Tennis Tournament and the National Wheelchair Tennis Series both at the Dan Maskell Centre at Loughborough University. For the third year running Thomas was a member of the Nottingham Ball Crew in June at the WTA Aegon Open helping players on court such as Johana Konta and the mens winner Dudi Sela. This summer he has also helped the younger children at summer camps as a trainee coach at Loughborough Lawn tennis club. Thomas is now back to a strong training program, juggling school work at South Charnwood High School with tennis and fitness where he is working towards national competition events.

The Royal British Legion, which was founded in 1921, is the UK’s leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. To be able to continue its work, the Royal British Legion in turn needs our help. Buying a poppy this month is a simple and practical way to show your support. Please don’t forget to remember. The Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, Councillor Virge Richichi will be launching this year’s appeal on Saturday 28th October at the War Memorial Coalville at 11.30am. He encourages as many of you to come along and dig deep for this worthy cause. Everyone is welcome to attend the Armistice Day Service at the War Memorial Coalville on Saturday 11th November at 11am. Coalville will also be holding its annual Remembrance Day Service and Parade on Sunday 12th November. The parade leaves Christ Church at approximately 10.35am. If your group would like to be involved in the parade, please contact Angela Bexton on 01530 454603 or email angela. bexton@nwleicestershire.gov.uk for more information.

Grab a tree for free 2017 in the National Forest and beyond

Could you help brighten up your garden, street and district by planting a free tree this year? North West Leicestershire District Council is once again working in partnership with the National Forest Company and HK Wentworth to offer the Free Tree Scheme in an effort to make our district even greener. Residents of North West Leicestershire can choose two trees from four varieties and can also apply to the “Hedge Fund” to order up to 30 metres of hedging.

Holly (ilex aquifolium)

The common holly grows as a shrub or tree and has bright red berries and shiny leaves. The leaves are spiny and have a waxy texture. Holly is evergreen and will grow almost anywhere, including in difficult conditions such as waterlogged or chalky ground. In autumn, leaves turn a rich red colour.

Cherry Plum (prunus cerasifera)

Masses of pure white flowers smother the branches in early March before the leaves appear. This is followed in autumn by tasty red or yellow, spherical cherry plums that grown on mature plants. The cherry plum is a popular ornamental tree for garden and landscaping use.

Hazel (corylus avellana)

One of the smallest native tree species, hazel grows more like a shrub than a tree, only reaching approximately 20 feet in height when mature. Its leaves are comparatively large and round with a distinctive point. The leaves are slightly hairy to the touch and have a wrinkled appearance when fully out.

Whitebeam (sorbus aria)

Is a medium-sized deciduous tree, rather upright when young, with dark green leaves, white-felted beneath, and clusters of white flowers in spring, followed by red berries in early autumn.

The Hedge Fund this year is Hawthorn and Hazel mix with a Whitebeam at 10 metre intervals

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

A fast growing, deciduous hedging plant. It heralds the arrival of spring, has an abundant and spectacular display of white scented blossom and it develops glossy red haws in autumn. It grows to 15 metres but it can be trimmed after flowering or in the autumn to keep it smaller.

You can order online at www.nwleics.gov.uk/freetreescheme2017. The deadline for applications is 27 October. Trees will be available for collection on Sunday 19 November 2017.

Hugglescote Conservation Area Given Green Light By Councillors A new conservation area will ensure sustainable growth and the preservation of the character and appearance of the North West Leicestershire village of Hugglescote. North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Cabinet approved the plan on Tuesday evening, following consultation with residents living in the village. The conservation area, which is centred upon Dennis Street, is intended to contribute towards ensuring sustainable growth and development in the village, and to help people to continue to feel proud of their homes and community. A conservation area is defined as an area of special architectural and historic interest, where it is important to preserve or improve its character and appearance. Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Planning at NWLDC, said: “This is good news for the people living in Hugglescote and for the future of the village. This conservation area is intended to protect the general character of the area and additional listed buildings nearby. It's not about preventing change. It's about managing change in a way that works with the area’s special character. When we are considering planning applications within conservation areas, we're required to pay special attention to preserving or enhancing its character or appearance. Building uses, materials, the scale of buildings, street furniture, surfacing and spaces between buildings are all issues which may affect the quality of an area. Hugglescote will now feel the benefit of this whenever a new proposal comes into our planning department.”

www.ignitegasltd.co.uk It was my pleasure to welcome Iain Duncan Smith to the constituency last month to address the annual dinner for the North West Leicestershire Conservative Association. As many of you will know, Iain is a former leader of the Conservative Party and served as Works and Pensions Secretary for 6 years. Iain Duncan Smith is a politician I have admired for many years, in main due to his commitment to social justice. It was this passion that led him to set up the Centre for Social Justice to look at the root causes of poverty and addressing them with practical solutions. The welfare reform agenda he instigated is already having an impact. Since the Conservative Party came to office in May 2010, unemployment has fallen by one million, 600,000 more disabled people are now in work and 590,000 fewer children are in workless families compared with 2010. In our own district, unemployment has fallen from 1513 in June 2010 to 485 today and youth unemployment has fallen from 475 to 120 over the same period. The best route out of poverty is through work and only a strong economy creating jobs can provide this. In sharp contrast, the Labour Party have this week been announcing policies which would take this Country backwards. They even accept the damage they would do to the UK economy in planning for a run on the pound should they get into power and in confiscating assets at a price dictated by Parliament. It is becoming increasingly clear that Labour are looking to Venezuela as their economic model for the U.K. Should they get into power. Venezuela is a country which under their socialist regime has massive unemployment, food shortages and starvation, 1000% inflation due to the Government printing money, corruption, a health care implosion, murder, democratic repression and human rights abuses. Now some 85% of Venezuelans live in poverty despite the country having the largest oil reserves in the world. The prospect of Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell running the

British economy with their Marxist ideals is absolutely frightening as history shows that no country has an economy too strong to be destroyed by socialism. The Prime Minister made a speech in Florence last month to update the UK position on Brexit. In this negotiation it is the UK who are trying to get things moving and be creative in the terms of our departure. What remains clear is that we must stick to our departure date on the 29th March 2019.The Prime Minister has raised the prospect of a transitional period but that is exactly what it is and must have a clear end date. If the EU are not prepared to engage with the UK when we are bringing forward generous proposals, then one has to wonder if they are interested in doing a deal at all, in spite of it being in the best interests of all our nations. What is clear is that it is their intransigence that is the problem and the UK has been proactive through numerous policy papers in defining what our position is. It seems unfortunate that the EU only appear interested in how much money they can extract from the British taxpayer. Britain does remain open for business however and last month I attended an event at the new Strategic Rail Freight Interchange which is currently being developed north of Castle Donington along with the Rail Minister Paul Maynard The Segro East Midlands Gateway as it will be known is a large-scale logistics park which will house up to 6 million square feet of warehouse premises covering around 700 acres. It will have its own rail terminal for the exclusive use of freight traffic with the aim of supporting and encouraging the increased movement of freight by rail in the whole East Midlands. The plans bring significant road improvements to the M1, A50 and a bypass for the village of Kegworth. Together with the 7000+ jobs that will be created, this is a major development for North West Leicestershire and underpins our current and future economic growth which is one of the highest in the Country.

£60 Million Hinckley Town, Coalville Peanuts? Cllr Michael Wyatt has again attacked the Council for its extremely poor record in its commitment to help revitalise Coalville Town after learning Hinckley Town Centre has had over £60 Million in private and local investment spent on its much needed shopping facilities. Cllr Wyatt said, “Its clear we are being fobbed off and short changed. The current Tory administration are try their best to convince us we are getting a good deal with their current investment plans but in reality they are completely inadequate and half hearted. Sadly the current Tory leadership lacks vision and any aspirations to see this happen. At the moment we are being spending peanuts while other areas which have suffered just like ours are getting a much better deal and proper leadership and commitment into revitalising their town centres.”

The new quarry is expected to finally be producing thousands of tons of stone by 2019 for commercial use. Cllr Wyatt said, “I am eager to make sure this site does not increase the dust, noise and odour problems the local residents already have to endure. I would urge any resident who is concerned or suffering from any problems with quarry to contact either the Bardon Aggregate direct or alternatively you can contact me so we can try and address any concerns.”

County Councillor & Labour Group Leader

Dr Terri Eynon

T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk Planning to Park in Coalville Parking in Coalville and Hugglescote is being made even more difficult for established residents. Developers build on former garage sites and other informal parking spots. Residents complaints fall on deaf ears. Under the National Planning Policy Framework, County Highways are not obliged help. Residents have no statutory right to park near their homes. The Government takes the view that if you need a parking space, it is up to you to buy a house with a drive or a garage. With my Labour colleagues, I have tried to get NWLDC to use Planning gain to help residents. District and Parish Councillors are told it is up to LCC Highways. LCC Highways say it is up to NWLDC Planning. In the end nothing happens.

• Hugglescote has lost two

garages and building houses

has displaced over 20 cars onto nearby streets.

• Access roads are being built off terraced streets to allow for new

Where there is a will… Coalville is not the only area with this problem. My home town of Birmingham has streets of terraced Victorian houses. Their residents struggle to park too.
