This event will raise funds to support the Fire & Rescue community and their dependants with mental, physical and social wellbeing. “Fire Service personnel and their families are always there to look after us and fundraising for their Charity is just one of the ways we can give something back” says Events Fundraiser Laura Challis. “Join us to see if you’re able to escape the room within an hour and to see if you’re able to beat other teams in escaping first.” It costs just £12.50 per person to take part which is half the usual price! Newly Refurbished Gym And Fitness Studio Unveiled At Hood Park Leisure Centre

Article by NW Leicestershire District Council Gym goers in Ashby-de-la-Zouch are benefitting from a newly refurbished gym as part of a £1.2 million investment. The completion of the first phase of Hood Park Leisure Centre’s extensive refurbishment was today celebrated by representatives from North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), and sports and leisure operator Everyone Active. Members at Hood Park Leisure Centre can now enjoy a newly refurbished 75-station gym. It is has doubled in size and boasts a new layout, as well as the latest Technogym cardio and resistance equipment. A larger free weight area and functional area has also been added which includes a Technogym OMNIA machine, amongst other state-of-the-art equipment, and a new exercise studio has also been introduced. The remainder of the renovation work at Hood Park is on schedule and the dedicated group cycling studio, new reception foyer and wet and dry-side changing rooms are all due to be completed by the end of the year. Update On Coalville Leisure Centre The planning application for the new £23 million Coalville Leisure Centre, which will be built on land off Stephenson Way, was submitted in July. The plans, which show a top-of-the-range centre in a parkland setting, were discussed by NWLDC’s planning committee at a special meeting on Tuesday 15th October.

It provides low cost holidays at the British seaside for people with a life threatening, life shortening or terminal condition. Plans Submitted For Newmarket In Coalville Article by NW Leicestershire District Council

The planning application showing how an old pub in Coalville will be transformed into an indoor market has been submitted. Subject to planning permission, the former Litten Tree on Marlborough Square will be turned into a modern market hall, with traditional market stalls and food vendors, as well as flexible space for entertainment and events. The front entrance of the market, which will be named Newmarket to reflect the historic name of the square, will be reconfigured to return some of the heritage features of the building. With extra glazing and a reinstated half-moon window above the door, the new front will be a welcome change from the currently empty and derelict pub building. Once inside, visitors to Newmarket will be greeted by four food vendors and a shared seating area, with traditional market stalls selling a range of wares. Stallholders from the current indoor market have been offered space within the Newmarket or on the outdoor market in the redesigned Marlborough Square once this is complete. Others are being supported to move into alternative premises in the town centre. The plans are the latest step in North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) work to regenerate Coalville town centre, with other schemes including a redesign of Marlborough Square, a frontage grant scheme for businesses and a wide-ranging events programme. Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “One of our main priorities is the regeneration of Coalville and we are quietly plugging away at a number of projects that will support this. The new indoor market is a key part of our plans – moving away from a failing building in the wrong place to a modern space in the heart of the town. We’re very excited to get to planning permission stage and hope to receive approval from the committee so we can get on with the transformation of the former pub.” Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services at NWLDC added: “We are grateful to the market traders who are coming with us on this journey and those who are taking our support to move their businesses into other premises in the town centre. They all have a part to play in the success of the town and I would encourage everyone to support them in the current market hall as we go through the build process and look forward to Newmarket opening next year.” The planning application will be considered by NWLDC’s Planning Committee. The council is hoping to secure planning permission this year. Should planning permission be granted, work will start immediately, with completion in the first half of 2020. Prostate Enlargement, A Pressing Matter Article by Gary Trickett

Prostate disorders affect over 50% of men over the age of fifty and almost all men over the age of eighty. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder. It surrounds the urethra which drains the bladder. As men get older the prostate gland starts to enlarge, slowly squashing the urethra and reducing the amount of space available for urine to pass through. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) occurs when the prostate grows to an unhealthy size, causing difficulty and discomfort for men when urinating. Symptoms can also be confused with prostatitis, a simpler inflammation of the prostate, often caused by bacteria. The main symptoms of BPH are urinating frequently, difficulty in getting a urine stream going and feeling as if you are unable to empty your bladder properly. Although not life-threatening, it’s not much fun. However before you think about treatment you do need an official diagnosis from your doctor so as to rule out a more serious condition. Once prostate enlargement has been confirmed you may wish to try a Saw Palmetto supplement. Prostasan Saw Palmetto capsules from A. Little Acorns Pre-School Now Open In Thringstone Article by Gemma Patel

On 2nd September 2019, a brand new pre-school opened in Thringstone in the former Sure Start Children's Centre next to Thringstone Primary School. Many children are already experiencing what Little Acorns PreSchool has to offer and numbers are continually increasing. Open during term time only, Little Acorns is open from 8.45am3.30pm, with morning, afternoon or full day sessions available. The pre-school accepts 15 hours FEEE funding for eligible 2 year olds and 15 or 30 hours funding for 3 & 4 year olds. It is ideal that the pre-school shares the school grounds, as children are able to use the school’s facilities including the MUGA (multi-use games area), the field and the trim trail. Fresh hot dinners can also be provided from the school kitchen for those children who stay for lunch, although parents can send a packed lunch if preferred. The building has been transformed from the previous Sure Start Children's Centre, to make it a purpose-built pre-school suitable for little learners. With two large rooms for separate age groups and a smaller room that is set to become a sensory room, the space is perfect for 2-4 year olds to have a variety of experiences to prepare them for school and to encourage independent learning. Following the EYFS curriculum, children learn letters, sounds & maths daily through fun activities and play and the staff select topics based on children’s interests and work in small groups, so learning is age and ability appropriate. The pre-school also has a secure outdoor area with grass, sand, soil and outdoor resources. It leads off one of the main rooms so learning can naturally flow through from indoors to outdoors. Staff are also forest schools trained and a dedicated forest schools area for the pre-school is being developed in the next few weeks. We have completed a couple more challenges since our last update, the first being an open water night swim at Rutland Water, where we donned our wetsuits and swam the 600m course under the stars. It was a beautiful night and amazing experience On 20th September at 8.31pm the Robins and Rainbows Team set off on a 75km walk in the Peak District. Our mission to complete it within 24 hours! We took a steady pace through the night with the help of a mountain leader to guide the way in the darkness. There was some tough terrain with steep hills to negotiate but by daybreak the team had made good progress covering over half of the mileage and in good spirits despite the lack of sleep! It was a beautiful sunny day and now we had the light with us, we continued to make our way through the stunning Peak District with the cows and sheep cheering us on. At this point we were self-navigating so lots of mulling over the map but we were still making good time. As the day wore on, we were getting more and more tired, we’d been walking for hours with no sleep and were feeling a little like the great unwashed! It became very much a mind over matter mission, legs and feet were wanting to give up but we were all determined to finish it. And at 7.36pm we passed the finish line feeling extremely accomplished. 23 hours of walking, 75km, a few blisters, a bit of blood, a lot of sweat and the odd tear accompanied by lots of laughs, dubious singing and random hallucinations but we did it! A fantastic team effort by all. Thank you to everyone who supported us on the walk and continue to do so throughout the year. Our current fundraising total is now a fantastic £2322! This all goes to Together Against Cancer in memory of Kim Pye. Our next event is a Fashion Show on Friday 15th November at The Royal Oak, Kirby Muxloe, followed by The Rutland 10k night run. Remembrance Service And Parade Article by NW Leicestershire District Council

North West Leicestershire will remember and reflect on the sacrifices of fallen soldiers at a Remembrance Day service and parade on Sunday 10th November. The Coalville event is organised by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) in conjunction with the Whitwick branch of the Royal British Legion. The parade leaves Christ Church at 10.35am passing along Hotel Street and High Street, culminating in a wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Memorial Square, which is always well supported by the members of the public. During the two minutes silence poppy petals will be released from the top of the Memorial Clock Tower in memory of the fallen. On Sunday 10th November a parade will leave Hermitage Leisure Centre at 2.15pm followed by a service St John the Baptist Church at 2.30pm. Everyone is also welcome to attend the Armistice Day Service at the War Memorial in Coalville on Monday 11th November at 11am. The Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, Councillor John Bridges will also be launching this year’s appeal on Saturday 26th October at the War Memorial Coalville at 11.30am. He encourages as many of you to come along and dig deep for this worthy cause. The council’s dedicated Armed Forces Champion is Councillor Tony Gillard. He said: “Remembrance Day is a chance to reflect and remember those we have lost, and to show our gratitude to those that are serving in conflicts around the world. The first meeting of the Friends this season took place on Thursday 26th September at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall, where we were to have heard a talk on ‘Visitors to Charnwood forest’ by David Robinson. Unfortunately this talk had to be postponed for medical reasons, so Marilyn Palmer gave a talk on ‘The Making of the Industrial Landscape in Leicestershire’. ‘Landscape’ is perhaps best connected with Leicestershire through the work of W G Hoskins, late professor of local history at Leicester University. What people may not realise is that he came to dislike Leicestershire, and particularly its industrial landscape, and he retreated to Devon as soon as he was able. So what were the industries that contributed to this landscape? The talk covered the rise, and in some cases the fall, of these industries, from knitting and the boot and shoe industry to iron founding and engineering, and the bricks which made St Pancras station. Weaving was, of course, a very ancient occupation. At first sheep were shorn, the wool either combed or carded, then spun and knitted, all by hand. The first knitting machines may well have orginated in Nottinghamshire, and certainly by the mid 18th century the highest concentrations were in the Nottingham, Leicester and Derby shires. These evolved into power-driven machines which by the 1870’s formed the basis for a factory culture. Here the talk touched on the subject of the role of women in the growth of this industry. Meanwhile boots and shoes were being manufactured chiefly in Northamptonshire, but the industry spread north in the 1860’s, examples being the Wheatsheaf Works and the British United Shoe Machinery Co, both in Leicester city. Charles Bennion, the CEO of British United, was responsible for the presentation of Bradgate Park to the people of Leicester and its shire. Iron works arose at this time; Gimson’s works being a very good example. Its products may still be viewed at the Abbey Pumping station, which originally was designed to pump sewage to Beaumont Leys but is now a museum. To make things involves a source of energy, anything from man or horse power to the introduction of steam, the product of heating water using a coal fire. The next topic in the talk was, logically, about the coal industry. In the north western part of the county the coal measures have a fairly thin overburden and are easily mined. Unfortunately, between them and their city lies the Charnwood Forest, which makes transport both difficult and expensive. This led on to transport, which is necessary for industrial growth in any case – the bigger the market, the more prosperous the industry. The coming of the canalisation of the river Soar between the Trent and Leicester allowed cheap coal from Derbyshire to flood into Leicester, depriving the Leicestershire coalfield of its market. Its first attempt at retrieving the situation was the Charnwood Forest canal – a disaster in the making. Then came the Leicester and Swannington Railway, well known as the Stephenson line that had to create both the steam whistle and the Glenfield tunnel. The age of steam has come to an end. Factories which once produced enough to give Leicester the title of the richest city in Europe are now blocks of flats, either by conversion or destruction. Smoke no longer hangs over the city. Would Hoskins have approved? We shall never know... The next meeting of the Friends will be at the same venue on 14th October when Martyn Speight will give a talk on ‘The Storey of the Charnwood Water Supply over the last 150 years’.

Free Tree Opportunity For North West Leicestershire Residents Article by NW Leicestershire District Council

A scheme that has helped to plant more than 100,000 trees in North West Leicestershire is back for its 11th year. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) works in partnership with The National Forest and HK Wentworth Ltd to make thousands of free trees available to all residents and community groups in the district every year. The Free Tree Scheme has been running annually since 2008 and has given out 103,000 trees over the years since. More than 28,000 of those were given to residents and groups in its 10th anniversary year in 2018. Four different types of trees are available this year: • Dogwood • Field Maple • Holly • Hazel The trees are approximately 60cm – 90cm (two to three feet high) when they are collected and come with a guide on how to look after them properly. Households can apply for up to two trees while community organisations such as environmental groups, allotment societies and wildlife groups can access a larger number of trees. Running at the same time is the council’s Hedge Fund where residents, landowners, groups and schools can plant new hedges. The offer includes up to 30 metres of a mix of hawthorn and hazel hedging, with field maples every 10 metres. Applications for free trees open on Monday 30th September and will close on Friday 25th October. People can find more information and submit their applications online at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ freetreescheme2019 Residents that apply for a free tree must be available for collection on Sunday 17th November.

Christmas Tree Festival Christchurch G&S Ready To Hit The Stage Article by Rachel Fitzpatrick

Last year it was 1920s Japan for their black and white setting of The Mikado, this year it’s a more familiar setting of Cornwall for Christchurch G&S Society as they prepare to bring Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta Ruddigore to the stage this November. Full of Sullivan’s satirical wit and observations of British society (which still hold true all these years on) and set to Gilbert’s sparkling score, Ruddigore is something of a hidden gem among Gilbert and Sullivan’s numerous works. From the dramatic When the night wind howls, to the comic I once was a very abandoned person, the beautiful duet There grew a little flower and the wonderful harmonies of choral numbers like When the buds are blossoming, Ruddigore shows Gilbert at his very best. The action takes place in a fictional Cornish village, where the professional corps of bridesmaids – the only village to have such a thing – are bemoaning their lengthy wait for a wedding; all because the village’s men are too shy to approach the prettiest maiden, Rose Maybud. Amongst the men’s number is Robin Oakapple. With the arrival of Robin’s foster brother, the sailor Richard Dauntless, love eventually blossoms for Robin and Rose only for Sir Despard to unveil Robin as the rightful heir to the cursed title of the Baronet of Ruddigore! As such Robin – or Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd – must perform a crime every day or die. Rose is left heartbroken…but not for long as she decides to wed Richard instead! As Sir Ruthven adjusts to his new wicked lifestyle his ancient ancestors, in ghostly form, ensure that his behaviour is bad enough to escape their wrath and save him from death…but can he find a way to free himself of the curse and get his bride back? Father and daughter duo Richard Perkins and Cheryl Hammersley are sharing the Director’s chair for this production with support from Musical Director Kate King. Allister Jordan tackles the dual role of Robin Oakapple/Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd with Richard Tomlinson as his foster brother Richard Dauntless and Rachel Fitzpatrick caught in the middle of the love triangle as Rose Maybud. They are ably supported by Matthew Hammersley and Alison Matthews as the unlikely and humorous pairing of Sir Despard and Mad Margaret, Adrian Dobson as the ancestor Sir Roderic Murgatroyd, Sue Smith as Dame Hannah and Roger Muggleton as Sir Ruthven’s faithful servant Old Adam. Other roles are played by Lisa Grant, Rachel Cousen, Sam Baguley, Valerie Hart, Eddie Atkins, Mike Jones and John Cousen. Ruddigore is at Iveshead School Theatre, Shepshed (formerly Hind Leys College), from Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th November. Performances are at 7.30pm Wednesday to Friday with a Saturday matinee only at 2.30pm. Time To Choose October 31st, Hallowe’en, is the deadline and parents have a scary decision if they have a child in their last year at primary school. Where do they want their child to go next? Secondary schools in Coalville are changing their age range from September 2020. Newbridge will become an 11-16 school and King Edward VII will merge with Castle Rock (as part of the Apollo Academy) to become an 11-18 school. Academies now make these decisions, in consultation with parents. I do think they have made the right call. Staying in the same school reduces disruptive transitions and makes it easier for staff to get to know a child properly. Changing the age-range will also solve another irritating problem. When a new estate is built the Council can ask the developer to contribute to building more school places, but only if the Council can prove that the local schools will be overfilled. Stephenson’s Studio school only takes about 80 pupils a year, age 14-18, but is registered for hundreds more. These unfilled ‘places’ have been preventing LCC from claiming s106 developer contributions for King Edward VII who take the majority of our children in this age range. Under the new arrangements, money should now trickle in from the 3500 houses being built around SE Coalville. Play The System – To Win! Parents who feel strongly about getting their child into a particular school sometimes ignore the bit on the application form that asks them to name three preferred schools. Officers have assured me that, due to the way the system works, putting three schools down does NOT reduce your child’s chance of getting their first choice. What it does do is massively increase the risk of your child being one of the handful with no place to go at the beginning of term. With so much new development, Hugglescote School is one of the most popular schools in the District and was oversubscribed by 60 applications this time round. I am pleased to report that developer contributions (s106 agreements) have been signed for two new schools in SE Coalville, expected in 2023 and 2025. Transporting children with disabilities, sometimes very long distances, to a school that can meet their needs is time-consuming and costly. Ten additional places for children who have difficulties in communication and interaction (including autistic spectrum disorders) are planned for Hugglescote Primary School and a new block (twelve places) is to be built at Forest Way Special School. It is now compulsory for all children age 16-18 to remain in some form of education or training. Children with special needs usually have an Education Health and Care Plan that continues until they are 25. But the rules for special needs transport have not kept up. Councils have no statutory responsibility or funding to provide SEN transport post-16. Close The Loop In an attempt to cut SEN transport costs, the County Council proposed giving parents and carers Personal Transport Budgets (PTBs) and letting them make their own arrangements. The real costs of arranging private school transport for a child with disabilities can be eyewatering amounts of money. Alternatives, such as doing the roundtrip yourself, can make it impossible to hold down the job that pays for the car you need to do it. A judgement in the High Court has delayed PTBs until next September but, being judged quite legal, this has only put the problem off. I am pleased to say that all Leicestershire’s Councillors voted at September’s Full Council to support the ‘Close the Loop’ campaign and will be now be working with the parents and carers to lobby the Government to change the rules and give Councils the funding post-16 children with SEN need.

The competition standard was very high, and the judges were all impressed by the range and depth of ideas. The theme of “hope” clearly inspired local children to explore words, rhythms and rhymes in a variety of new and creative ways. The first prize, which is a Fire 8 HD kids edition, has been awarded to Dexter Mackie - aged 9 for his poem on climate change and hope. The judges were impressed with his powerful message with head judge Ben Norris commenting: “a fierce and unapologetic poem that is at once damning us and inspiring us to do better”. Pedestrian Crossing Needed On Ashby Road

I have asked the County Highway Officers to look at installing a pedestrian crossing to help improve safety for the children who go to local Primary school. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s astonishing that in this day and age there is no safety measures outside the local school on Ashby Road in Coalville. Everyone knows that there is going to be more traffic along this stretch of road fairly soon due to future housing in the local area, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that proper safety measures are included in any new development along Ashby Road. Traffic growth is a major problem and it will become ever increasingly dangerous, so the last thing anyone wants to see is a child being hurt or killed due to poor planning decisions made by councillors and planners.

Wyatt Calls For Action Over Dangerous Increase In Pollution On Bardon Road Area For a number of years I have been very concerned over the ever increasing dust problem along Bardon Road, and especially at the Bardon Road Island which pedestrians and motorists use on a daily basis, also high volumes of traffic and local quarry dust is a major contributor which is adding to the dangerous concoction of toxins that may be affecting many local residents health, especially those who suffer from breathing problems. I have taken steps to gain information from Bardon Aggregate so we can see if there as been an increase in dust particles in the local atmosphere over the past decade. I have also asked a number of other organisations to see if we can gain our own independent dust and pollution measurements so we can have confidence in the findings. I understand the district and county authorities have pollution measurements but I like many no longer trust these authorities to provide truly independent and accurate information relating to pollution levels. I, along with the new Bardon Ward Councillor Angela Black will be pushing hard for action to help reduce by whatever measures possible to reduce high pollution levels in the local area.
