Exhibition Documents Coalville’s Extensive Collection Of Memorials In The Run Up To The Centenary Of WWI An exhibition charting the creation of Coalville’s iconic Memorial Clock Tower, the unveiling ceremony performed by local philanthropist, Mary Booth and its ongoing significance as a building of historic and architectural significance was opened on Wednesday 12th September at Christ Church Hall, London Road, Coalville. Entitled These Names are Lamps of Sacrifice, the exhibition is the culmination of a four-month project to bring the story of Coalville’s war memorials to life, involving local heritage groups and the local community. The project was commissioned by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and has run in parallel to essential conservation works to the Clock Tower supported by the HLF and the War Memorials Trust. The project has shed fresh light, not only on the Clock Tower in Memorial Square, but also the many other types of memorials that were installed in Coalville’s churches, graveyards and public places at the end of the First World War. Details of the servicemen who are commemorated on the memorials not only provide a poignant reminder of the huge loss felt by the town and its surrounding villages between 1914-18, but highlight the ordinariness of the men who lost their lives - coalminers, steel workers, scholars and sportsmen – many of whom were barely adults when they died. The exhibition will now visit venues in Coalville and the villages of Hugglescote, Whitwick, Ibstock, Swannington and Thringstone between October and November. The dates are listed on the Choose Coalville website at www.choosecoalville.co.uk The exhibition will be open at the following venues: •• 19 - 22 October - The Palace Community Centre, High Street, Ibstock, LE67 6LH •• 24 - 25 October - Whitwick Park Hall, Off North Street, Whitwick, LE67 5HB •• 26 - 28 October - St John the Baptist Church, 12 Grange Road, Hugglescote, Coalville, LE67 2BQ •• 29 - 30 October - Hugglescote Community Centre, Grange Road, Hugglescote, Coalville, LE67 2BQ •• 1 - 7 November - Century Theatre, Ashby Road, Coalville, LE67 3LN •• 9 -14 November - Charles Booth Centre, The Green, Thringstone, Coalville, LE67 8NR Local Memorials One of the stories uncovered by the exhibition and brochure is of a memorial commemorating former teachers and students. The memorial itself was lost under bushes at the former Bridge Road School, only to be rightfully restored by the Principal of Coalville Technical College, Mr Bryan Cox in [year].c.1988. It now has pride of place in the grounds of Newbridge School. Visitors to the exhibition will also learn about heroes such as Theophilus Jones, former headteacher at Thringstone School, who is believed to be the first casualty of WWI to be killed on British soil and who is commemorated by the memorial window in St Andrew’s Church, Thringstone.

Students Joe Ashby from Coalville, an IT student from Stephenson College, together with Matthew Howes and Ashley Kavanagh, both BTEC photography students at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, took photographs of memorials which are included in the exhibition and the accompanying brochure. Local Memorials The project has also recorded people’s memories of the town, with the help of the Coalville Heritage Society. Peggy Leawood (85) recalls watching her father play the bugle at a memorial event at the Clock Tower in 1937: “I remember such big crowds of people around the Clock Tower. My Dad was a member of the Hugglescote and Ellistown band and he used to play Coalville Park on a Sunday night. They had a bandstand in those days and my mother and I used to watch while he played and it was lovely in those days.” A selection of people’s memories of the town in years gone by are available to listen to on the project website, www.choosecoalville. co.uk, where the exhibition brochure and an education pack for primary schools can also be downloaded.

Coalville Poppy Appeal Launch And Unveiling Of Commemorative Artwork Over the past year, the continuing conflicts in many parts of the world have never been far away from the headlines. During all of these battles, and throughout history, men and women have continued to put their own lives on the line to protect our freedom. Whatever and wherever the conflict, many members of the Armed Forces and their loved ones have paid and continue pay a high price to do this job

Clock Faces Returned To The Top Of The Coalville Memorial Tower After Restoration March Of The Fifty In 1914, the first civilian volunteers to land in France marched from Hugglescote Church to Coalville Railway Station on their way to their final training in Luton. They became known as the Famous Fifty. On behalf of Hugglescote and Donington le Heath Parish Council, Llynda Baugh of Spiral Projects.co.uk, is co-ordinating a re-enactment of that march. Llynda says ‘on the day these young men undertook that march, the streets were lined with flag waving well wishers. The church bells were ringing and the soldiers were lead by a marching band. There was a great air of excitement and pride - after all, everyone knew they would all be home by Christmas. Sadly, only 21 returned. Four years ago, we created their memorial on Millfield Park in Hugglescote. On 28th October at 1.50pm, 50 men will set off from Hugglescote Church following a service that starts at 1.00pm. They will march in the footsteps of the Fifty who, in 1914, had been specially chosen for their tunnelling and explosive making skills and, of course, their bravery. Their march will end in New Broadway Shopping Centre where a 2 minutes silence will be held. As before, the church bells will ring and a marching band will lead them. Please come and cheer them on along the route. It will be an amazing site’.

The restored clock faces of the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower will be returned to their home at the top of the 21 metre memorial on Monday 17th September as the first phase of its restoration nears completion. The four clock faces were removed whilst contractors have been carrying out masonry, steelwork and roofing repairs to the Grade II listed tower with funding from North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), Heritage Lottery Fund and War Memorials Trust.

Martin Butchers, Smith of Derby Technical Sales Engineer, said: “On close inspection, at least three of the cast iron dials had serious structural defects and cracks, and the glazing on the dials had turned a very deep yellow. The dials have now been re-glazed in opal white and the clock hands have been restored to their original style. We are delighted to restore time on this memorial clock tower and long may we remember the Coalville community who gave their lives in the two world wars.” Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion, said: “It’s important to us as we’ve been carrying out important structural work to the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower that we have also taken the chance to clean and repair it to reflect its importance to the town. The clock faces themselves are a very important part of the tower, so it’ll be fantastic to see them brightly returned to the top of the memorial. We’re all looking forward to the scaffolding coming down so we can see the newly cleaned and restored clock tower.” Work to tell the story of the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower and other memorials in the local area has been ongoing while the restoration has taken place.Visit www.choosecoalville.co.uk for more information.

Spooktacular Halloween Checklist By Timmy @PartySaveSmile.co.uk Hi Ghouls and Gals, Timmy from Party Save Smile, the party superstore in Coalville here! That time of the year is fast approaching, and all the children will soon be asking ‘Trick or Treat?’ and we have been filling our party superstore with all sorts of Spooktacular supplies. If you need to pick up some Balloons, Decorations or Supplies for your Halloween party, pop in and see what we have to offer! Now for my spooktakular checklist… 1) Halloween Pinatas – Don’t just give your guests or Trick or Treaters candy, make a game of it! Fill a Pinata with treats and spooky surprises, the winner could share the candy, or it could be winner takes all?!

Redesign Of Marlborough Work Is Now Underway Work to create a public open space for markets and events at Marlborough Square in Coalville started from Monday 1st October. As part of its commitment to regenerate and build confidence in Coalville, North West Leicestershire District Council is redesigning the square to make it a much more attractive public space that is pedestrian friendly and can be used for a range of events. Members of the public can now see the designs at www.nwleics.gov.uk/marlborough Traffic While the work is ongoing, there will be restricted vehicle access to the square. Access through Marlborough Square will be permitted for buses, emergency and delivery vehicles only; all public vehicles and taxis are to use Jackson Street and Belvoir Road.

2) Floating Ghosts and Witches – Cover some balloons with lightweight plastic sheets decorated in a spooky design, or grab a Helium Filled Halloween balloon and watch them float by. Our pick can be seen below and are available to pick up in store today.

Once the new square is complete, vehicles will only be able to travel through the square one way – from Jackson Street to Belvoir Road. The carriageway around the square on Belvoir Road, Jackson Street and Marlborough Square itself will be raised to encourage vehicles to slow down. Parking The 24 current free spaces will be moved to James’ Street Car Park (12 free one hour spaces) and Margaret Street Car Park (12 free one hour spaces). Once the work is complete, approximately five free 30 minute parking spaces will be provided in the new square. Three of these spaces will be used by the church for funerals and weddings.

3) Costumes and Masks – Dressing up and Halloween are synonymous these days, a great range of Fancy Dress costumes are available to order in our store as well as masks, face paints and accessories – *Top Tip* order early and plan ahead, the most popular and best costumes always sell out very fast! 4) Be Seen if you are out after dark – Make sure you are seen when you are out Trick or Treating in the dark, by adding a glow stick bracelet or necklace to your costume. 5) Window Clings and Decorations –Give your house or party venue the spooky treatment and decorate from the outside in, window clings make any home or workplace look spooky and are easy to use. Hanging decorations, cutouts, table centrepieces and banners are great and easy ways to transform any location into a gruesome fright night or pumpkin extravaganza.

Buses And Taxis Bus stops will not be affected during the initial phases of the work. The new bus stops will come into use when the traffic is switched over to the other side of the square. During the work taxis will not be permitted though Marlborough Square and a temporary taxi space will be provided on Jackson Street The new square will have two bus bays with shelters and one waiting space for buses. The taxi rank will be opposite the day nursery. It will hold approximately three cars. At night, when there are no buses running, the bus bays will be used as an additional taxi rank. As highways authority, Leicestershire County Council is responsible for the redesign on behalf of NWLDC. Contractors Morgan Sindall have been brought on board to carry out the work. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “The designs for Marlborough Square have received the support of local people and local businesses who want to see a vibrant public space, not just a cluttered car park. I’m told that the original name for this part of town was ‘New Market’ -the redesign means that Marlborough Square can once again be used for markets and events. We’re all looking forward to seeing the new square take shape.” Paul Gott, Highways Managing Director for Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure, said: “We are delighted to be part of the regeneration of Marlborough Square, our first project for the Midlands Highway Alliance to which we were appointed in July.We are looking forward to delivering the benefits this will bring to the local area and community and are committed to minimising disruption whilst the work is underway.”

Fangs for reading and don’t forget to checkout our website www.partysavesmile.co.uk for more ideas and supplies, or swing by and say boo! We are open to the public. Love Timmy

Councillor Blake Pain, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We’re working closely with the district council as highways’ engineers for the Marlborough Square project. This is just the sort of scheme which is needed to help deliver the potential of Coalville as housing and employment opportunities continue to be developed.”

May The Toys Be With You: Star Wars Collection Coming Home To Coalville A vintage collection of Star Wars toys and memorabilia will be returning to the town where they were first marketed and introduced to British children. The May The Toys Be With You exhibition is heading to the exact site of the former Palitoy factory in Coalville – now the Heartwood Conference Centre where many of the toys were made back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), with the support of Coalville Heritage Society and former Palitoy designer Bob Brechin, has secured the exhibition for the town, and it will go on display from Friday 2nd to Saturday 10th November. The free entry exhibition features more than 300 objects from the personal collection of Star Wars fanatic Matt Fox. They include everything from rare film posters and unpublished artwork, to his collection of action figures and vehicles – some of which were made at the Coalville factory. Star Wars has captured the imagination of millions over the decades from its iconic characters to its lightsabres, Millennium Falcon, X-Wing fighters and the Palitoy designed card Death Star. The original Star Wars trilogy – Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi – made almost $2 billion at the Box Office combined, making it one of the most successful of all time. It is estimated that 300 million action figures of characters like Luke Skywalker, Yoda and Chewbacca were sold between 1977 and 1985 when Star Wars fever hit its peak. At the height of the fever the BBC Newsnight team filmed in the Coalville factory and described it as ‘a goldmine on top of a coalmine’. The stunning collection will be returning in November to the former ‘goldmine’ that was Palitoy and will be held at the Heartwood Conferencing Centre, once the very offices where the development and marketing plans were conceived. The free exhibition will be held between 10.30am and 4.30pm daily from Friday 2nd November to Saturday 10th November at the Heartwood Conferencing Centre in Coalville Business Park, LE67 3NR. Complimentary events will be taking place during the exhibition period. Further information will be available on the Choose Coalville and NWLDC Facebook and Twitter feeds and at www.choosecoalville.co.uk Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “As soon as we learned of Matt’s incredible collection we knew we had to bring it home to Coalville. Palitoy left a real legacy in this town and a lot of people have great memories of working there or had friends and family connected to the firm. My thanks to the support we’ve had from the Coalville Heritage Society, Bob Brechin and of course Matt himself for providing his collection for us all to enjoy.”

The Flower Garden's 1st Birthday Party Bonnie, Jonathan and all the staff at The Flower Garden, Coalville would like to say a massive thank you for all the support from our customers over the last year. It's been a great year and we hope to have many more to come. Thank you to everyone who came and shared a slice of our beautiful birthday cake, that we had made for us by Sugar and Ice, and also the amazing balloon arch that caught everyone's eye, that we had made for us by The Fine Details. Lets face it, its not a birthday without flowers, cake and balloons! We are so proud to be part of the Coalville community and we are so keen to get people to start shopping local and joining in events that are happening here, there is so much on offer in Coalville and we urge people to try and use the smaller retailers where possible while there is such a wealth of choice. Independent businesses all care about the community and we care about our customers. We want to make you happy and as such will provide better customer service than big brands as our name is on the door! Give your local independent traders a go and you will see that you get better value for money as well!

Bob Brechin, former Palitoy Chief Designer, said: “I was Chief Designer at Palitoy from 1967 to 1984 and my main focus was on the development of Action Man throughout that time. When I attended a special preview of Star Wars about three months before general release I was stunned by the whole experience. It was totally toys from the dramatic appearance of the Star Destroyer at the start to the final credits. Shortly after I was fortunate to visit Kenner in the States and witness the first mouldings being assembled for the Tie Fighter and X-Wing. And to think that Palitoy almost passed it by, because the initial thoughts were that it was too risky to try to sell toys based on a single film - especially for what was being described as a sci-fi ‘B’ movie. How wrong we were! But, how right to venture forth.” Owner of the collection, Matt Fox, said: "As a childhood collector of Star Wars toys - now called 'vintage' toys, which doesn't make me feel any younger - I am so thrilled and proud to be exhibiting my toy collection in the very same location where they once originated. “Palitoy is a local company that literally put smiles on kids’ faces, making birthday and Christmas wishes come true, all around the country. This is a chance for Coalville to remember and be proud of their heritage - I do hope that the local community comes out in force, I'd like to see every family bring their kids to enjoy this free exhibition and celebration!" Stuart Warburton of the Coalville Heritage Society said: “The Coalville Heritage Society is extremely pleased and honoured to be part of May The Toys Be With You. Palitoy was a hugely important company in Coalville and has a lot of history in the town, and this exhibition will be a great celebration of that.We applaud NWLDC for bringing this exhibition to Coalville and we hope lots of local people and ex Palitoy employees come along to enjoy it.”

Christchurch G&S Ready To Cast Their Spell Tickets are now on sale for Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s forthcoming production of The Mikado. This is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most-performed comic operettas and Sullivan’s well-known score includes ‘Three Little Maids’, ‘A Wand’ring Minstrel I’, ‘The Madrigal’, ‘The Sun Whose Rays’ and ‘Here’s a how-de-do’. This production has been given a 1920s black and white setting but the score and storyline remain unchanged. The Mikado is set in the town of Titipu where the Lord High Executioner Ko-Ko and his three wards, Yum-Yum, Pitti-Sing and Peeb-Bo reside. Ko-Ko is in love with Yum-Yum and they are due to marry but the wand’ring minstrel Nanki-Poo – really the son of The Mikado in disguise – has returned to Titipu to claim YumYum, whom he loves. Meanwhile, The Mikado of Japan has ruled that, due to a lack of executions in Titipu, unless there is one within a month, the town will have its status reduced to that of a village, which would have terrible consequences. When Nanki-Poo’s hopes of marrying Yum-Yum are dashed by Ko-Ko, he is distraught and prepares to end his life but the cunning Ko-Ko strikes a deal with him; he can wed Yum-Yum if at the end of one month he is prepared to be beheaded! Nanki-Poo agrees and the town prepare for the wedding of Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum. The arrival of Katisha, an elder lady from the court of The Mikado, with more than a soft spot for Nanki-Poo, threatens to throw a spanner in the works but no-one is interested in her revelations about the true identity of Nanki-Poo. When Yum-Yum discovers the fate that awaits her if NankiPoo is executed she no longer agrees to marry Nanki-Poo, putting pay to Ko-Ko’s plans. With the imminent arrival of The Mikado an execution is needed quickly. Will Ko-Ko avoid execution himself? Will Katisha’s advances be returned by anyone and will Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum live happily ever after? Adrian Dobson is making his directorial debut with the group, having returned to the society last year to play the male principal lead in The Sorcerer; Kate King is Musical Director.Valerie Hart and Steve Gale play the romantic leads of Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo with Alison Matthews and Sam Baguley completing the line-up of little maids. Allister Jordan is Ko-Ko with Cheryl Hammersley as the formidable Katisha and Mike Jones, Richard Tomlinson and Roger Muggleton take on the roles of The Mikado, Pish-Tush and Pooh-Bah respectively. The Mikado is at Iveshead School Theatre, Shepshed (formerly Hind Leys College), from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10th November. Performances are at 7.30pm Tuesday to Friday with a Saturday matinee only at 2.30pm. Tickets are £12 (£6 for children) and are available through society members or by calling Margaret on 01509 504376.

Join us to celebrate the Beano comic turning 80 with a variety of workshops including how to create your own cartoons with Beano illustrator Laura Howell. Renata performed for us last November at the inauguration of our new piano at Markfield Methodist Church. The recital was an evening few of us will forget. Renata was a student of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and thrilled the full house with her programme of Chopin and Liszt, producing a spontaneous standing ovation at the end. Quite simply, Renata was breath-taking, with a staggering technique and depth of musical maturity. Added to that was her lovely, gentle manner. We are extremely excited to be welcoming her back! Kiddi Caru Day Nurseries Group Gruffalo Book Week The children, at Kiddi Caru Day Nurseries Group across Leicester, took a stroll through the deep dark wood this week to celebrate one of their favourite stories, ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson, as part of the Kiddi Caru Day Nurseries Book Week.

Grab A Tree For Free As Part Of 10th Anniversary Celebrations A scheme that has helped to plant almost 75,000 trees in North West Leicestershire is celebrating its 10th anniversary. North West Leicestershire District Council works in partnership with The National Forest and HK Wentworth Ltd to make thousands of free trees available to all residents and community groups in the district every year. To mark the special anniversary NWLDC has been collecting pictures of free trees that have been planted by residents from all corners of the district over the last 10 years. A display of these can be seen at the council offices reception in Coalville. The Free Tree Scheme has been running annually since 2008 and has given out 74,042 trees over that time. More than 16,000 of those were given to residents and groups last year alone. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the scheme a special commemorative Wild Service Tree is also available to order for residents living within the National Forest only, in addition to four other varieties. Alan Edwards was the recipient of a free rowan tree in 2013. He said: “It was only 12 inches tall when it went into the ground but now it is nearly seven foot tall! It enjoys a lovely sunny spot at the top of our front garden and when it is fully grown, it will be visible the full length of our street. This year, as you can see from the photo, it has developed berries so I assume that it is now a mature tree.” Five different types of trees are available this year: Rowan Crab Apple Bird Cherry Alder Buckthorn Wild Service (for those living in the National Forest) The trees are approximately 60cm – 90cm (two to three feet high) when they are collected and come with a guide on how to look after them properly. Community groups such as environmental groups, allotment societies and wildlife groups can access a larger number of trees.

The nursery practitioners turned their nurseries onto the deep dark wood for the children to walk through and re-tell the story, whilst hunting for the Gruffalo. The little ones dressed as their favourite characters and decorated masks and created a large-scale Gruffalo as part of their Gruffalo themed arts and crafts activities. We saw a mouse, fox, snake, owl and Gruffalo, and they all looked good! The little ones enjoyed messy play and sensory activities with natural resources including grass, bark, branches, mud, water and scented play dough with the Gruffalo characters. The babies particularly loved this activity as they explored different textures and temperatures to help develop their fine motor skills. The pre-school rooms learnt about the different animals in the book and practised moving like the animals in the book in their music and movement activities, such as slithering like a snake and flapping their arms like the wings of an owl. All the nurseries enjoyed decorating cookies and eating Gruffalo crumble for their pudding – with apples and blackberries of course, no Gruffalo’s were harmed in the baking!

Lights of Love 2018 4pm Sunday 2nd December Ferrers Centre Staunton Harold

Running at the same time is the council’s Hedge Fund where landowners, local groups and local schools can plant new hedges. The offer includes up to 30 metres of a mix of hawthorn and hazel hedging. Applications for free trees opened on Monday 1st October and will close on Friday 26th October. Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “I’m incredibly proud of this scheme and that so many residents have got involved over the last 10 years and planted new young trees. Each year our already beautiful district gets greener thanks to this scheme and the support it receives from people in the community. It’s incredibly important we look after the National Forest and our district as a whole, and getting everyone involved in planting trees is a great way of doing this.” People can find more information and submit their applications online at www. nwleics.gov.uk/freetreescheme2018 Residents that apply for a free tree must be available for collect it on Sunday 19th November.

Make a dedication in memory of a loved one this Christmas at our annual ‘Lights of Love’ service For more details please see our Facebook page or www.hospicehope.org.uk Charitable Incorporated Organisation No. 1169561

County Cllr Dr Terri Enynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk

Over the last six months I have written about how planning decisions get made. I have explained the budget cuts at both your local Councils and told you how they are investing your money. I have encouraged you to have your say about changes to bus subsidies. I have passed on messages from the police about how to spot potential drug pushers. I have signposted you to great places to get support if you are struggling. I have, admittedly, gone on about the NHS a bit, but it was our 70th birthday this year and it felt important. What I haven’t done, in the last six months, is mention Brexit. With our local MP acting as the mouthpiece of the so-called European Reform Group both in here and on the TV news I wasn’t sure if you wanted to hear my views. Sound Bites As we have all been told, time and time again, ‘Brexit means Brexit’. Whoever coined that phrase knew exactly what they were doing. Back in Roman times the children of political families spent much of their school-day studying rhetoric. There is an art to creating sound-bites that trigger the right emotional response. Repeated sound patterns, like alliteration, are comforting. A tautology like ‘Brexit means Brexit’ makes absolutely no logical sense. But, to our hindbrain, it feels true and real. Like a nursery rhyme, it floods our brain with dopamine. We feel safe and warm. Mummy and Daddy are looking after us. All will be right with the world. On the first of June this year my political representatives at the British Medical Association voted on my behalf to oppose Brexit. September’s edition of ‘The Doctor’ had a six-page spread explaining why doctors are worried. With six months to go, the EU divorce is not going well. Britain wants to have all the benefits as well as all the freedom. Few ex-wives are willing to do the washing for a husband no longer prepared to pay the rent. What Will Happen To Healthcare? In the meantime, this Government is playing fast and loose with those institutions that keep you and your family safe and well. The future of the European Medicines Agency is in doubt. The Government has suggested stock-piling medicines in the event of a no-deal Brexit. With many medicines having short shelf lives, this is hardly practical. If Britain is excluded from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, we will no longer get real-time information about dangerous diseases coming our way. At a more basic level, the future of the workforce is in doubt. 12,000 doctors from the European Economic Area work in the UK. Will they leave? Will our home-grown doctors still be allowed to get experience in the EU? I am already being told that social care is struggling to find staff. Some people who voted for Brexit believed that a reduced workforce would mean better training and conditions British-born workers. The reality is a meantime in which there will be few staff to care for people who are frail, elderly and disabled. Brexit does not simply ‘mean Brexit’. It means Britain will boldly go where only Greenland has gone before. With an island population a thousandth of ours, living almost entirely off fish, their miniscule economy has managed since 1982 without the oxygen of union with Europe. Our full-sized economy, living and breathing through trade agreements developed over a further three decades, is a totally different kettle. Another neat political sound-bite adopted by members of the European Reform Group is, of course, the empty catch-phrase ‘Project Fear’.Your doctors would like to reply with a time-honoured proverb: ‘Look before you leap’.

Whitwick Historical Group 35th Anniversary This month, Whitwick Historical Group is proud to announce that the Group, founded in 1983, will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary. To mark this special event, there will be an exhibition in the village on Saturday 20th October and the theme will be “Whitwick Schools”. The venue is Whitwick Methodist Church, at the Market Place end of Hall Lane, and admission is free. School days are something that everyone has experienced and the exhibition will cover a variety of linked themes such as: games children played; school log books; classroom artefacts; the story of WWII evacuees; information on the history of Whitwick village schools and how lessons used to be conducted. Everyone will have some recollections of particular incidents or characters from their years at school so there will be a “memory board” where these can be recorded and shared. We are delighted that both Holy Cross RC Primary School and St John’s CE Primary School have agreed to participate. It will be marvellous to see examples of current school work bringing the story up-to-date.

Furthermore, The Friends of Thringstone and Charley Heritage Group will be joining us with displays about the schools in their areas. There should be an abundance of images from around the locality to interest and fascinate one and all. Outside, there will be an exceptional attraction. Parked by the Church will be a Browns Blue double-deck bus. Buses like this were used as school buses so visitors will be able to climb aboard and relive their memories of the journeys to and from school. In addition to the displays, light refreshments will be available. There will be a raffle, with attractive prizes, which will be drawn on the day and the 2019 Calendar, along with other publications, will be on sale. Children of all ages will be able to have a go at a variety of quizzes based on Whitwick. At this significant milestone, WHG hopes to hold an event which will attract all sections of the community and once again reflect our enthusiasm for local history. We look forward to welcoming young and old alike to our exhibition, followed by more years of playing an active role in Whitwick’s life.

County Cllr Michael Wyatt M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk

Landlord Illegally Allowed Tenants To Rent Loft Space A landlord that let at least eight people from six different families rent space in his three-storey Coalville property has been ordered to pay almost £3,000 in court.

Wyatt Says No To Giving Rushton More Power

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) successfully prosecuted David Sansom, 53, of Waterworks Road, Coalville after he turned a home into a House in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) without being licensed.

Tories at County Hall have announced a consultation to abolish Districts and make County Hall one large blotted unitary. Sadly this idea of abolishing the District Council is supported by Labour Councillors in Coalville.

This saw at least eight tenants crammed into the house, with some living in a dangerous roof space.

Cllr Terri Eynon supported the plan according to the Leicester Mercury. She said: “The Labour group are pleased to see an in-principle commitment to unitary status for Leicestershire."

Environmental Protection Officers from NWLDC made the discovery after a tip off from a member of the public. After visiting the home in Waterworks Road they immediately issued an emergency prohibition to prevent the loft from being used as a habitable space. In total 14 issues were identified, with 10 offences used in a prosecution against the landlord.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “We need to send a strong message to the Tories and Rushton that centralising power is a non starter. I believe that this man is responsible for our Town being held back, the knocking down and the destruction of our Museum, the lack of progress on the much needed train-line for Coalville and Ashby, the failure to install the much needed and essential Bardon By-Pass and much more. Now he wants to destroy our local democracy. It’s time he realised that this is a step to far and we will fight this crazy power grabbing Tory policy. If anything we need to give more power to local District Councils who have proven time and time again that local decision making and local accountability works well and delivers a much better quality and responsive service. Labours failure to back the local Districts is another reason why in May 2019 we need to elect more Liberal Democrat Councillors who truly believe in putting people first.”

Your Community Needed You! Do you live in Bardon or in the Greenhill area? Then if you can spare a few hrs then please contact Cllr Michael Wyatt on 07773341531 if you would like to participate in helping to cut speeding within your local community Community Speedwatch (CSW) is a national initiative where active members of local communities join with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices. Vehicles exceeding the speed limit are referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speeds. In cases where education is blatantly ignored and evidence of repeat or excessive offences is collated (even across county borders), enforcement and prosecution follow.

Offences included not having a HMO licence, electrics not being maintained in a safe condition, a lack of adequate fire precautions, obstructions to escape routes, the only exit from the loft being a collapsible ladder and no fire or smoke alarms in the loft. Sansom appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ on Wednesday 19th September to plead guilty to eight of these offences. In mitigation his defence stated that Sansom hadn’t realised so many people would move in to each of the rooms as he rented them out and that work was planned to improve living conditions in the home. Magistrates fined Sansom £145 for each offence, totalling £1,015, and ordered him to pay a £30 victim surcharge. He will also pay the council’s £1,911 legal costs. From 1 October 2018 any property with five or more people from two or more households must have an HMO licence granted by the district council. For more information email environmental.protection@nwleicestershire.gov.uk Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “This prosecution sends a strong message that homeowners cannot break licensing laws or allow tenants to live in dangerous conditions. Legislation exists for a reason, and a there are a lot of factors that need to be considered before we will allow a home to be let to multiple tenants – not least the safety of the tenants themselves. This case shows we will investigate reports from the public and act if someone is disregarding the rules and regulations.” Landlords looking for more information on the guidelines around HMOs can visit www.nwleics.gov.uk/hmo

MP Andrew Bridgen

M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk As you will all no doubt be aware that we are experiencing significant housing and economic growth in North West Leicestershire, and last year nearly 1000 new homes were built in our District. I know with that level of housing growth there can be concerns about how this new development will look. This is something I was well aware of before I was elected in 2010 and why throughout my time in Parliament, I have championed the principles of good design. It was my great pleasure last week to attend an event celebrating ten years of good design in North West Leicestershire and present the People’s Design award to the Mark & Spencer food outlet in Ashby. It is not just commercial property where you can see a real change in design and layout but also the new housing developments being built in our towns and villages. Our new housing now encourage more of a sense of community, have better accessibility and reflect our position in the heart of the national forest with attractive features, more tree planting and more open space. It is these principles of design accompanied by more employment opportunities, which are seeing a rising demand for new housing in our area. When I hosted a reception in Parliament on the work we have done on design in North West Leicestershire, I stated ‘One of the most important things each generation can do for the next is to build high quality homes that will stand the test of time.’ I believe that we are excelling at that in North West Leicestershire and are reaping the rewards with the standard of development design we now see and that is giving a lift to the whole area. It is never enough just to build houses, we must build communities. As I write this, the Prime Minister has had a bruising setback after trying to sell her Chequers proposals to the heads of state in the EU. Indeed President of the EU Council Donald Tusk has taken to social media to troll the Prime Minster. I said from the off that the Chequers plans were completely unacceptable as it would leave us as a rule taker from Brussels with no say on the development of those rules in the future, and no ability to make our own trade deals on goods outside the EU, one of the main benefits we will get from Brexit. The EU are currently offering us 2 options. We either remain in the European Economic Area which is Brexit in name only as we would have to abide by all the EU rules, or a free trade agreement with Northern Ireland remaining in the Customs Union. They are not budging because they want us to vote again and to blackmail us into staying in the EU. It’s a tactic they have adopted time and again when democratic votes have gone against them as they do not respect the will of the public. We must now prepare for a no deal Brexit as only when the EU believe we are serious about this, will they start to show some flexibility in their approach to the negotiations. Legislation for phase 2 of HS2 has been put back by a year until 2020 and there is an increasing body of opinion that it should be scrapped. There is an expectation from rail experts that the costs for the first phase from London to Birmingham will swallow the entire budget for the project. If that phase does go ahead, then there will be no money left for the phases through to Manchester and to Leeds which will be built last. I am continuing to fight the campaign to scrap the scheme and believe support for doing so will continue to grow.

Number 22 - Coalville’s Newest Shop Marks New Venture For Family Business Two thriving businesses have moved into a new shop after they outgrew their previous home at Coalville Market. Supported by grants and advice from North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), family trio Mandie and Gary Redhead and Grig Macolm have expanded their popular market stalls into their new shop in Hotel Street. In the new shop, Number 22, Mandie and Gary are supporting Mandie’s son Grig (20) with his MMmm Bread local foods enterprise while making plans phase two of the business. Both businesses have enjoyed success in Coalville Market, supported by local shoppers and NWLDC. When the opportunity to rent a property in Hotel Street arose in June, the trio looked to expand and began work to convert the shop into their new business. NWLDC has been on hand throughout to support the expansion to Number 22, providing ongoing business support and technical advice including property, planning, store design and layout, and licensing advice. There are a number of ways NWLDC can support new businesses across the district, whether it be through expert advice or its grant schemes. To find out more visit www.nwleics.gov.uk/business or contact the Business Focus Team on 01530 454 609 or business.focus@nwleicestershire.gov.uk Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business at NWLDC, said: “I think it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to support this growing business through our grant schemes and through the help and guidance our Business Focus Team can give. I wish Mandie, Gary and Grig the best of luck in their new property and I’d encourage any other business owners looking to expand or move into Coalville to contact us so we can offer our support.” Mandie Redhead said: “Everyone at the council has been fantastic. We’ve had advice from lots of people - business, licensing, environmental health – and everyone we’ve spoken to has been really supportive. We really enjoyed our time at the market and made some great friends and excellent customers. We’re pleased to say that we’re now established well enough to have opened this shop. I would advise anyone who has a business idea to give trading on the market a go and to get the support of the council for your venture. It was an excellent stepping stone for us.”
