Great-Nephew Of Charity Founder Scales Germany’s Tallest Mountain For Hope Against Cancer Article by Bethany Shakesby

Christopher Bennett, the great-nephew of Hope Against Cancer’s founder, has climbed the Zugspitze - Germany’s highest mountain. He was joined in his ascent by friends Victoria, Rebecca, John and Amiee, the intrepid quintet raising money for the Leicester-based charity. Allison Wilson, Hope Against Cancer’s founder, started the charity in 2003, before tragically losing her own battle with the disease. Chris has pledged to honour her memory in the most inspiring way he can: “I believe the best way to support a charity is by doing something incredible. My great aunt was an incredible person - so I think it’s only fair!” And there aren’t many things more incredible than scaling mountains. This is no ordinary mountain, either. Standing at just under 3,000 meters, the Zugspitze dwarfs any mountain in the UK. It’s taller than Mt Snowdon and Ben Nevis combined - or three times the height of Scafell Pike. Chris and his team truly had their work cut out for them. Setting off on August 16th, the team spent two nights on the mountainside before reaching the summit on the 18th. From the peak, hikers can survey both Germany and Austria, plus look down on the beautiful Alpine mountain range. Hope CEO Nigel Rose commended Chris and his team for their outstanding efforts, “Feats like this are tremendously important for Hope Against Cancer. Not only do they raise money in their own right, but they encourage others to fundraise as well. I’m so proud of Chris and his team - they’re truly an inspiration.” If you’d like to donate to Chris’ cause, you can at the following link: www. justgiving.com/fundraising/zugspitze Hope Against Cancer raises money to support cutting-edge research in the treatment and prevention of cancer. Bagworth Whistle Stop Bridge One Year On Article by Shelagh Rumbelow

It is twelve months since the start of the relaxed duplicate bridge group started in Bagworth. Members come from several of the surrounding villages and towns including Hugglescote and Coalville. On June 18th the group had its first Annual General meeting which was attended by 26 members who, after the meeting, had a bridge drive and an afternoon tea. The group’s annual report highlighted the achievements of the group by way of its regular weekly attendance, providing Beginners and Improvers courses and maintaining a good financial state in being able to purchase all essential equipment. Neighbouring clubs were thanked for their support and loan of equipment. Members elected their Committee and approved various policy documents and constitution. They also considered future developments for the club and decided that at this stage affiliation to the English Bridge Union was not appropriate and wished to continue as separate club rather than amalgamating with another. However, they did feel that friendly events should be promoted with adjacent clubs. This suggestion has been amicably received by a number of them. For the future, members, agreed that they would like to have the electronic scoring systems which other clubs often use and so hope to generate sufficient funds and to apply for grants for some financial assistance. The group thrives on its convivial atmosphere and the challenge of this fascinating mind sport so don’t be afraid to join them on a Thursday afternoon at the Bagworth Community Centre, even if it’s years since you played! You will be given a warm welcome and given patience and support. To encourage new players the group plans on starting a beginners progamme in the Autumn, so watch out for further details. If you are interested, do contact Shelagh or Carol via email on whisltestopbridgeinbagworth@gmail.com or telephone / text 07530364339. Come on board and get those brain cells working!

Whitwick & District U3A Article by Sue Calcutt

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its monthly General Meeting on Friday 20th September. If you are at the age when you remember that September meant signing up for evening classes at our local community centres and colleges, then the U3A could be for you. We may not yet have the full range of activities that kept us so busy during the cooler months then but there are learning and social groups to suit most tastes, all run on a self-help basis. If you are retired and looking for absorbing activities, the General Meeting offers an opportunity to discover more. Our guest speaker for this month will be Peter Gee-Pemberton with the topic “The Air Ambulance Service”. The Air Ambulance Service is a non-government funded charity that flies two local air ambulances across Leicestershire and four neighbouring counties. The two helicopters provide a rapid response to trauma and medical emergencies over a vast area which includes many of the UK’s major road networks. With an average response of just 13 minutes, between them, the aircraft attend an average six missions a day. Learning more about this astounding charity should be both interesting and engaging. To listen to Peter as well as find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL. Please arrive at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. The U3A movement is non-political and non-religious: everyone is welcome. Alternatively, there is comprehensive information available online at www. whitwicku3a.org.uk

World First Prostrate Trolley/ Procedure Co-Founded By Coalville Based Brown Dog Charity Article by Mark Storer

23rd July was another proud day for Coalville based charity Brown Dog who co-funded (with Leicester charity PROST aid) a "world first" prostrate trolley and new procedure at the Leicester General Hospital. The equipment was launched by Masood Khan (Consultant Urological Surgeon) who pioneered this new approach which involves making a small incision in the perineum which gives 100% better access to the prostrate and enables a much improved biopsy to be taken. Dr Khan explained that currently patients have to have a general anaesthetic (with a greater risk of sepsis) and the biopsy is taken via the back passage, which only allows limited exposure to the biopsy. Statistically the results of the new approach are amazing e.g. with the old method 30% of men tested were found to have a problem, whilst the with the new approach it was 60%. This means that more men are getting a more accurate diagnosis which can then be addressed earlier. The whole experience is so much better for the patient. With the old method the patient would have to wait longer for a slot in theatre, on the day they would be nil by mouth, they would then have to be at the hospital all day and wait for their slot to come up and then after the procedure they would have to recover from the effects of a general anaesthetic. With this new procedure, patients are treated as a day patient, the waiting list is shorter, they are given a time slot beforehand (so they know when they will be seen and only spend limited time at the hospital) and the examination is carried out using a simple local anaesthetic. Once patients have been to the toilet they are allowed home. There are benefits to the hospital too, as well as freeing up valuable theatre space and creating the capability to see far more patients, it is far more cost effective which saves NHS money. Dr Khan explained that due to the success of this new approach he is talking to many other hospitals across the UK and organising training for other Doctors so the benefit can be felt across the county and ultimately across the world. Mark Storer (Chairman and Founder of Brown Dog) said that Brown Dog were absolutely delighted to fund such a ground breaking approach which was made possible by people who took part in the Moonfleet 50 mile (through the night) coastal walk in June. He went on to say that money raised will also fund some vital equipment to help women with cancer, more news on this in a couple of months. Brown Dog will be celebrating 20 years of fundraising in 2020 and have just launched their main challenge on 20th June 2020 - for details go to www.cancerbrowndog.co.uk

Swannington Heritage Trust The Windmill’s Sails Are Coming Article by R Bisgrove

Hobby Heaven At Hugglescote Article by Vesta Brownbill

Every first Friday of the month @ the Hugglescote Community Centre from 6.30pm till about 9.30pm: Bring any portable hobby to share, develop yourself and maybe even inspire. Entry is £1. Under 16 need to have adult supervision. We started in June this year and it’s building into a creative, lively place to be on a Friday night. A place to relax after a hard week at work, a place to be if you want some company, a place to be lively a place to be quiet. What ever gender, culture, nationality, faith anyone is welcome. It is so exciting as it is already expanding and developing. We started out on our first night in June with the crafters: knitters, crocheters, sewers, beaders and artists. From that night came a photography group and being introduced to ‘today’s’ boardgames created by a participant. Now we have two hosts for ‘TABLE TOP Role play’ and a group of 16/17 years olds should be coming in September to start that up. Also the Boardgamers/Warhammer etc guys/girls are getting together to plan their first battle in September. AND we have been given the use of a Table Tennis table so a bunch of us are goers for that, lol!! The idea of this started with seven of us now eight, all Christians, deciding to get together and share our hobbies. We are supported and encouraged by St Johns in Hugglescote although we come from various churches from Leicester to Coalville. We would love the people who come to be interested in Christ and the faith we have BUT if they are not that’s fine too. Everyone will always be welcome because it is primarily about creating a good place to be, full of creativity, fun and relaxation in our fast and crazy world.

• 1999 mill structure - cap, floors, windows, doors and some of the milling machinery • 2002 and 2007 ancillary buildings - toilet, electricity, workshop and visitor centre • 2009 fantail to turn the cap, top of upright shaft and windshaft, • 2012 brakewheel, a 10 ft (3m) diameter wooden wheel weighing 1.75 tons • 2014 wallower, 1 5ft (1.5m) diameter wooden wheel that meshes with the brakewheel • 2017 sack hoist The Trust is therefore delighted that a set of four framework sails will be fitted to the mill at the beginning of September. Although the framework sails will not turn when the wind blows, shutters can be added at a later date. The Trust’s philosophy has been to take one step at a time, making sure that each step does not become an obstacle to the possibility of windmill operation. The last time the mill had four sails was more than a century ago. At last Hough Mill will look like a windmill (see artist’s impression). ‘Sails fest’ Sunday 29th September 12 - 5pm Sails fest will be a community fete with live music, dancing displays, bar, refreshments, bouncy castle, children’s activity trail and craft activities, stalls, games, prize draw and lots more! There will also be a celebration of Swannington and the Heritage Trust. If you have memories and photos of visits to the mill when it was derelict or since it opened to the public in 2000, please share them with us. Hough Mill Sunday afternoon openings (2-5pm) will continue until the 20th October. Details of our windmill, railway and coal mining sites which are now beautiful woodlands are on our website www.swannington-heritage. co.uk and on our Hough Mill Facebook and Twitter pages. There also have information about our events, speakers, walks, group visits and volunteering opportunities. Readers can ring our Trust Chair, Katrina, on 07779 275762 or email swanningtonchair@hotmail.com

There Should Be A Will, And There Is A Way! Article by Peter Ralphs

For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will. To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated gift in their will to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times. The offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/will-writing/ Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Anthony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately, 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide. Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”

A motorist that claimed he couldn’t remember who was driving his white Porsche when a cigarette was thrown out of its window has ended up with a £1,642 bill. One of North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) enforcement officers spotted the male driver of the Porsche 928 throw the cigarette stub onto London Road, Coalville, in December 2018. The number plate was taken and Manoj Karpal, 42, of Scotlands Drive, Coalville, was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £90. Karpal responded to the notice confirming he was the registered keeper and the driver at the time of the incident, but then failed to pay the notice. NWLDC initiated court proceedings and Karpal pled not guilty at the trial held at Loughborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 4th September. In his evidence Karpal claimed initially that he or his wife could have been driving the vehicle, before upping this number to potentially three or four different people. He went on to say he ‘did not remember’ who was actually driving the car that day. After deliberating magistrates confirmed they found the council’s evidence to be ‘clear, credible and precise’ and that Karpal’s was ‘confused and not credible’. They also pointed to Karpal’s initial acceptance that he was the driver as a key piece of evidence. Karpal was handed a fine of £692 and ordered to pay NWLDC’s costs of £881, in addition to a £69 surcharge. This totals £1,642. The original Fixed Penalty Notice was for £90 rising to £150 if not paid within 10 days.

Menopause Needn’t Mean Misery Article by Gary Trickett

Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 but in some women it can begin much earlier and in others, as late as 65. For most women there are three phases: peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause. Hormone levels can fluctuate considerably during all three phases, resulting in hot flushes, night sweats, low mood, thinning hair, headaches, tiredness and loss of libido; and in the Western world it is estimated that approximately 75% of women are affected. Thankfully, there are a number of remedies that can help. Right at the top of this list is sage. One of our oldest medicinal plants, it appears to have a rebalancing effect on the hypothalamus, an area of the brain responsible for sweat regulation, amongst other things. When you go through the menopause the ovaries produce less of the hormone oestrogen and this drop in oestrogen causes the hypothalamus to work extra hard on maintaining hormone levels, upsetting its sweat regulating function. This causes sudden surges in temperature and the uncomfortable ‘hot flush’. Sage helps to correct sweat regulation and diminish hot flushes. Fresh sage tincture diluted in a little water three times daily can really help. Try Menosan Sage Drops or for extra oomph, Menoforce Sage tablets. Isoflavones can also help. Oestrogen-like plant hormones or ‘phytoestrogens’, isoflavones help to reduce hot flushes by providing an additional hormone boost when oestrogen levels are low. Popular food sources include foods made with fermented soya such as natto, tempeh and miso. In Japan, where soya is a dietary staple, fewer than 25% of menopausal women are reported to suffer with hot flushes. In fact, steering clear of what might be considered a typical Western diet of white flour (ie bread, pasta and rice), full-fat dairy, fatty meats and caffeine can help considerably. For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Permission Granted For Jaguar Land Rover Development Article by NW Leicestershire District Council

Plans for a new 2.94 million sq ft distribution site near to junction 11 of the M42 have been approved by North West Leicestershire District Council’s Planning Committee. The land near to Appleby Magna now has permission for five new units which will create new jobs and boost the local economy. The landowner IM Properties recently revealed their intention to lease the site to Jaguar Land Rover for use as a ‘logistics campus’. Permission was granted at a well-attended planning committee meeting on Tuesday 3 September, which heard passionate speaking and debating both for and against the application. Statutory consultees such as Highways England, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire County Council’s highways departments and the Environment Agency had raised no objections to the plan. Councillor Nigel Smith, Chair of North West Leicestershire District Council’s Planning Committee, said: “This has been an emotive and challenging planning application which has sparked lots of passion and interest in the community. As a committee we must assess all applications against material planning considerations, planning legislation and guidance and our own Local Plan. This development fits within these considerations and promises to be a significant boost for the local economy and levels of employment. Our planning officers will now continue to work with the developers and the local community as this plan moves forward to the construction phase.” The plans can be viewed in full by searching 18/01443/FULM on the district council’s planning portal at www.nwleics.gov.uk

Nominations are now open for North West Leicestershire’s annual celebration of outstanding contributions to sport and health. The North West Leicestershire Local Sports Alliance Sport and Health Awards return to Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitwick on Thursday 28 November. The night provides a fantastic opportunity for the community to recognise and reward local people, athletes, coaches, volunteers, sports clubs and schools within North West Leicestershire whose achievements and leadership inspire and motivate others. Last year Leoni Fielding won the Junior Volunteer of the Year award for her volunteering at Coalville Football Club, helping to train younger players and becoming a real role-model at the club. Ashby Castle Tennis Club’s fund-raising, inclusivity, promotion of junior involvement and disability programme helped land them the Sports Club of the Year. There are lots more people and clubs just like these in North West Leicestershire that deserve recognition too, and now is the time to nominate them. Nominations can be made at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ sportandhealthawards in 15 categories for athletes, coaches, volunteers, clubs and schools who have achieved highly between September 2018 and September 2019. The deadline for nominations is Sunday 29th September. The categories are: • Primary School of the Year • Secondary (High and Upper) School of the Year • School Team of the Year • Junior Sportsperson of the Year • Junior Volunteer of the Year • Junior Team of the Year • Senior Sportsperson of the Year • Senior Volunteer/Coach of the Year • Senior Team of the Year • Disabled Sportsperson of the Year • Club of the Year • Healthy Lifestyle Award • Community Award • Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity • Active Age Award Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “This is your chance to nominate the teams, sportspeople, coaches and volunteers that you feel deserve recognition for their services to sport and health in our district. We had some fantastic winners last year and we know there are plenty more talented and devoted unsung heroes in North West Leicestershire that are deserving of praise. Now is the time to get nominating!” For full details on how to nominate and the award categories, visit www.nwleics.gov.uk/sportandhealthawards

Get In Touch Facebook: NWLeicspolice Twitter @NWleicspolice Email: northwestleicestershire.npa@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk www.leics.police.uk A Message From Insp Jackson

Since my previous update in March we have had a number of officers moving onto new roles. So whilst we sadly say goodbye to PC Graham Wells, PC Craig Turner and PC Louise Gravenall, we welcome three new officers: PC Paul SMITH – Joined the Police service in 1996 and is a very well respected officer who has trained over 30 officers, my-self included! PC Jason HARRIMAN – Having worked as a PCSO in Ashby for 5 years, Jason has undertaken a lot of work around rural crime and also established good relationships with local key contacts. Jason also received a NPA commander’s certificate for outstanding work in relation to burglaries and a Chief Constable’s commendation for bravery. PC Rich WATSON – has worked in North West Leicestershire for over 20 years as a beat officer, response officer and most recently as an area investigator. He has good local knowledge and looks forward to joining the team. Awards Night I had the pleasure of attending the annual Volunteers in Policing awards in June and I’m proud to report that our very own Bob Bancroft received the DMU Lifetime Achievement award for his services to the NWL Community over the years and PCSO Lynette Rose was awarded the Caterpillar VPC Leader of the year Award. Well done both.

Scouting & Girl Guides A number of the team here are volunteer scout and guide leaders and dedicate much of their own time supporting scouting and girl guiding activities. This year Cattow’s Farm in Heather hosted the 9th International Scout and Guide Camp which was organised by Leicestershire Scouts and Girl guiding. The event attracted thousands of young people from around the world. Scouts and Guides aged 10 to 14 camped in sub camps and despite the weather enjoyed a range of exciting activities. I was proud to see officers and staff from Leicestershire Po-lice volunteering to support the event as leaders, and for those who in their own time attended the camp to run various activities including public order training and police dog displays. Ashby Show Ashby show kindly allowed us and our safer roads team to attend this year’s event, assisted by our volunteer Special Constables and Cadets we were on hand to offer appropriate crime prevention and road safety advice. The day was exceptional with many of the cadets and specials giving up their own time to help at the event. I am grateful of the efforts of our volunteer cadets who between them also found an 85 year old missing person. ASB Car And Patrol Plans Together with the local council, we take reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB) seriously. Deputy NPA Commander Sgt Lind-sey BOOTH has recently set up an ASB patrol which sees daily patrols of all hotspot locations at the right time. This approach has been well received and continues as a permanent feature for the daily deployment of our PCSO’s. If you do have problems with ASB please do contact us. PHOTO: PCSO Lynette Rose and PCSO Bekki Hayles out on ASB patrols. Download 2019 Despite the rain, Download 2019 was an exception-al event yet again. Attracting over 70,000 visitors the event was supported by force wide resources and passed without incident. We are due to start work with event organisers soon to plan next year’s festival. As part of the Safety Advisory Group, PS Rog Barlow and I spent some time at the event enjoying the mud and making use of our new 4x4 vehicle!

Supporting Warren Hills School On 26th June the police and fire hosted an event aimed at giving the children from KS2 experiences that don't usually occur at school. Some of the events are providing life-skills and others at experiencing different vocations. Pupils spent time with the police and fire service and engaged in various aspects of the work undertaken by both. This was followed by a team building session at Conkers outdoor centre. Feedback from the children was extremely positive and enabled them to see potential career opportunities in adult life. NWLDC Community Safety Partnership kindly supported this initiative which we hope to repeat.

What Matters To You Event On Thursday 18 July I joined Police and Crime Commissioner Lord Willy Bach and Deputy Chief Constable Rob Nixon who visited Coalville shopping centre and spent time talking to local residents about local concerns. It was helpful to establish that the issues raised mirror our current local priorities which are being ad-dressed around burglary, drugs and associated crime.

North West Leicestershire Challenged To Recycle More Article by NW Leicestershire District Council

Communities and businesses in North West Leicestershire are being challenged to increase recycling rates to 50 per cent through a new campaign. Recycle more… was launched on Monday 19th August by North West Leicestershire District Council in an effort to inspire residents to improve their recycling habits. The council will make recycling easier by making changes and improvements to the kerbside recycling collection service, improving its messaging to make recycling simpler and encouraging the reuse of items. Recycle more… will see: • Recycling lorries now display a variety of educational messaging about recycling • 250 households are signed up to trial new recycling containers in an attempt to make recycling easier and more convenient going forward • A weekly food waste collection trial for 2,000 households starting in the autumn • An awareness campaign about what can and can’t be recycled, where it goes and the consequences of not recycling • A kerbside collection of batteries and old mobile phones will start this autumn. Currently 54 per cent of waste in the district ends up in landfill. Despite this, North West Leicestershire is the third best performer in the county for recycling, but aspires to improve further. Last year, NWLDC ran an online recycling survey with one of the most startling statistics revealing 40 per cent of residents in the district felt confused by what they can and can’t recycle. People are also unsure about where their recycling goes and why it’s important. In NWLDC’s case recycling currently earns the council around £500,000 per year which is reinvested into the many services it offers. Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “We want North West Leicestershire to become a leader in being green and sustainable. One big way we can all contribute positively to our local area and the whole planet is by improving our recycling rate. We have been listening to our residents and are beginning to make big changes to the ways we collect recycling and waste, while also educating the public in an effort to remove some of the confusion about recycling. We are asking our residents to join us on this recycling journey to create a greener and more sustainable district for everyone.”

With various members of the North West Leicestershire (NWL) NFU, National Farmers Union. Andrew Bridgen MP states “It was good to visit Joe Stanley and see other members of the NWL NFU during Parliamentary Summer Recess. Andrew Bridgen MP Attends Hospice Hope Pop-Up Café The local MP Andrew Bridgen attended Hospice Hope’s 'Pop Up' Café at Heather Village Hall on Wednesday 31st July 2019. Andrew met with the team who had laid out a variety of drinks, cakes and snacks for attendees. Activities on the day included a Hope House craft table as well as a fabulous raffle. Hospice Hope provides pastoral support for people with life limiting conditions in North West Leicestershire. Many people in North West Leicestershire have sadly been diagnosed with a life limiting condition. Figures from the last Census in 2011 revealed that 25% of households in North West Leicestershire contain a person with a long-term health problem or disability and these numbers are set to rise. People often struggle with the fact that the local NHS offers no day care provision to support them or their carers, nor pastoral support to cope emotionally with their changed medical situation. There is without doubt an urgent need for care. Since its inception in 2002, Hospice Hope has always recognised the need for pastoral care in the community. To help fill this void, the charity runs four weekly Support Cafés in Ashby, Coalville / Whitwick, Ibstock and Castle Donington, where people and carers can drop-in for the afternoon, receive support, relax and meet new people. In addition to this, since April 2017, Hospice Hope has offered further pastoral support at ‘Hope House’, Griffydam. It is a place for the person with the life limiting condition, where we can offer a warm welcome, emotional support, complementary therapies, activities and a nutritious hot two course lunch, prepared in our own kitchen. Hope House is open 2 days a week from 10.30am to 3.30pm and guests are invited to attend on one of the two days. Whilst their loved ones are at Hope House, carers are able to take a well-earned break too. For more information www.hospicehope.org.uk

Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk

Are Potholes Driving You Potty? While Coalville children were enjoying their long summer holidays, the Head and Governors of All Saints School on Ashby Road were worrying about the terrible state of the access between their building and the West End Club. The surface is now so pitted with potholes it is a danger to life and limb let alone vehicles and their axles. Working together with local councillors I have been doing my best to help the school find a solution to a problem that has remained unresolved for decades. The problem is no-one seems to want this pothole pitted private cul-de-sac. There is no registered landowner. The diligent officers in both Highways and Properties at Leicestershire County Council have dug around in the deep recesses of the Land Registry and it seems that this access road once led to the brickworks. ‘What brickworks?’, I hear you ask. Well, yes, that’s history. This kind of problem is not unusual in Coalville. There are all sorts of bits of land whose ownership is lost in the mists of time. The trouble is, this means there is no-one responsible for maintaining this driveway. There is no-one to take responsibility if a vehicle or child were damaged by sliding into one of the potholes. This problem has been frustrating for decades. In the days when Local Government had spare cash to spare, it might have been possible for you, the taxpayer, to solve the problem by taking the land into public ownership. The trouble with that idea is, as a Highway Authority, your Council would be obliged to bring the road up to ‘adoptable standards’ and that would cost you eyewatering amounts of money. I am pleased to say that, despite these daunting difficulties, all your current and former Councillors and School Governors are determined to do their best to resolve this problem. But we may need your help. With more sites being redeveloped for much needed social housing, we need this school to be able to look after more children living in the town centre. If there is sufficient concern from parents, we should be able to make a case for some other kinds of funding to solve this issue without going to the expense and complications of adopting the road. If you have a child who goes to All Saints School, ask the Governors what kind of help they need from you to get this campaign off the ground. The Many Faces of Palitoy – A Century Of Toys The story of Palitoy – Coalville’s ‘goldmine on a coalmine’ - is 100 years old in 2019. The Coalville Heritage Society together with NWLDC, the Museum of Childhood at Sudbury Hall (National Trust), Leicestershire Museums and Leicestershire Promotions are partners in a successful bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a £86,500 grant to celebrate Palitoy in Coalville with the people who worked at the factories and warehouses, the products, the children who played with the toys and the collectors who keep the name alive. A free exhibition, ‘The Many Faces of Palitoy’ exhibition will take place on the site of the original factory, now the Heartwood Conference Centre, and will feature toys made at Leicester and Coalville since the 1920s including iconic Star Wars memorabilia as well as Tressy, Action Man, Pippa, Tiny Tears, Action Force, Girls World, Play Doh, Discovery Time early learning toys, Mainline Railways to name but a few. The free exhibition opens in Coalville on the 12th October 2019 and will be open daily from 10.00am – 4.00pm until the 10th November. Anyone Interested In Bowls? Scotland’s bowls club off Forest Road in Coalville closed to due unforeseen problems. I have spoken to officers and they have informed me that they are willing to support and help get it restarted but obviously they need genuine people who want to play bowls. They are also looking for members to be on a committee to help run the club. If anyone’s interested let me know. There is already a club house and grounds is the facility is already available and waiting.

Stephenson College Announce Their Charity Of The Year As Your Local Air Ambulance Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland Article by Karen D'Aguilar

Stephenson College are delighted to be supporting their local air ambulance for Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland as their charity of the year and fund-raising activities began last week on International Day of Charity. Your Local Air Ambulance serves five counties across the Midlands and all their life saving missions are funded by charitable donations alone.

Wyatt Calls On County To Tackle Mess On Ashby Road In Coalville I have spoken to the county highways officers on several occasions about the state of Ashby Road which is overgrown and a complete and utter mess. I am pleased to say after an exchange of words the county highway workmen started to tackle the overgrown vegetation near ASDA due to several reports of near misses by several drivers. I really do think the Leicestershire County Council Tory bosses need to get their act together and smarten up Ashby Road which is their responsibility. Ashby Road is one of the main gateways into our town and seeing such overgrown vegetation does nothing to improve our image. It makes me think it’s a deliberate attempt by certain individuals who want to run down our town.

22 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Principal, Dr. Nigel Leigh, said: "We are pleased to be supporting Your Local Air Ambulance who work tirelessly to save lives and alleviate sickness wherever and whenever possible in the local area. Staff and students at the college will take part in various fund raising activities and we are also holding three community events over the year inviting the whole community of Coalville in to the College to enjoy seasonal activities with all proceeds going towards our charity. We are looking forward to a year of fun activities whilst raising vital funds for this worthy cause." Vicky Evans, Community Fundraising Executive for the Leicestershire and Rutland area of Your Local Air Ambulance DLRAA said “We would like to say a huge thank you to Stephenson College for making our lifesaving service their charity of the year. We are incredibly grateful for all of their support and look forward to working with them.” Our next charity event is on 31 October when we will be carrying out a number of ‘Spooky Activities’ for our Halloween Fund Raiser.
