Coalville Heritage Society Vow To Fight To Save The Historic Red House The Coalville Heritage Society are appalled at the Central England Co-operative Ltd. proposal to demolish the Red House and replace it with a poorly designed convenience store which they feel looks like a ‘shed’. The Red House is the oldest building in Coalville and dates from the 18th century. Research by Society members Denis Baker, Professor Jeff Knight and Stuart Warburton have revealed a history of the building that goes back to the middle of the 1700s. The earliest documentary evidence discovered to date is from 1774 when the Red House, it has always been known as the Red House, was a farm house and is featured on maps from 1777 and 1815 as well as the very first Ordnance Survey map of 1835. The Red House has always stood at the centre of the town, even when the area was called Long Lane, and has been a focal point of the area for over 250 years. It was also the starting point for Samuel Fishers reminiscence of Coalville in 1832 as he stood with his back to the Red House and described the fledgling town and its four lanes. By 1799 it had become a public house and the scene of an attempted murder when the landlord William Wisdom was shot and wounded answering a knock at the door. The suspect was arrested in Thringstone, found guilty and hanged but some years later a man arrested for horse stealing at Copt Oak confessed to the crime. During the 1800s the Red House was also known as the ‘Cradle and Coffin’ as legend has it the landlord was left with a baby when his wife ran away with a customer, allegedly he starved the baby to death and then buried it in its wooden cradle in the back yard of the public house. An interesting name and story but no evidence can be found to this gruesome murder. From the 1870s it was surrounded by Coalville Market and at the rear was the livestock market and with the increase trade and links to the markets probably encouraged either landlord Robert Shepherd (1887 – 1901) or Arthur Tyler (1905 – 1911) to build the large red brick extension at the rear of the building and make the public house a hotel with stable and servants. The Coalville Heritage Society have been keeping a watching brief on the building because of its historic importance and that it could be under threat and at risk of demolition when Admiral Taverns, the previous owner, sold it at the end of last year. The Red House stands in the Coalville Conservation Area and therefore the new owners, Central England Co-operative Ltd, have had to apply for permission to demolish. The Coalville Conservation Area Character Appraisal and Management Plan published by NWLDC in 2014 states that the Red House ‘makes a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the conservation area’ and goes on to say that any building that makes a positive contribution applications to demolish will normally be rejected and if approved the replacement building should offer the same level quality and character worthy of the conservation area. The Coalville Heritage Society believes the proposed redevelopment offer neither a quality replacement or adds to the character of the conservation area. Steve Duckworth, Chairman of the Coalville Heritage Society commented that “The proposed convenience store is of extremely poor design and resembles a ‘shed’. It offers nothing in the way of quality development to the town and if a building of such poor design quality is approved then we will not only have lost an important historic building but replaced it with a new building that adds insult to injury”. Steve Duckworth added “The Coalville Heritage Society hopes that all the parties involved, Central England Co-operative Ltd, their agents Marrons Planning and North West Leicestershire District Council can work together to come up with a scheme that allows the new owners to develop a convenience store which reuse and sympathetically adapts the existing historic building. This is not rocket science and there are many examples of historic buildings being converted to convenience stores and retail outlets around the country, let’s learn from these other towns and get the best for Coalville”. The Coalville Heritage Society urge anyone with an interest in the future, as well as the past, of the town to write to express their concerns and objection to this detrimental proposal. The Society has posted a ‘The Red House. An Historical and Architectural Significance Appraisal’ on their website www.coalville-heritage.info which outlines the history and architectural significance of the building.

Local Business Helps Raise Vital Funds For Rainbow Hospice Charity Event! After raising several funds for a children’s charity last year, a Northwest Leicestershire based manufacturer, of insulation and beverage dispense equipment, jumped at the chance to take part in Rainbows Children’s Hospice 10th Anniversary challenge. K-Flex, a manufacturer and distributor of insulation products and beverage dispensing equipment based in Coalville have been raising money for Rainbows since 2013. This year, staff members rallied round as the ‘K-Flex River Pythons’ to battle against 28 teams taking to the water on Nottingham's River Trent on Sunday 5th August. Steve Yearsley, K-Flex Operations Manager and Team Captain commented, “Great fun was had at the Rainbows Annual event as the team battled their way through the hot weather, achieving a personal best time of 62.58 seconds and raising over £600 to support young people and their families across the East Midlands, to add to their ongoing charity donation.“ Tom Stanyard, Corporate Partnership Fundraiser at Rainbows said: “We’re delighted that so many companies from across the East Midlands came out to support us. With little guaranteed funding each year, it’s the generosity of individuals and businesses, like those who took part in the Dragon Boat, that mean we’re able to continue providing vital care to the region’s most seriously ill children, young people and their families.”

Proud Day For Whitwick & District U3A Last month, Whitwick and District U3A held an Open Morning to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the group’s foundation. Ten years ago, in 2008, a very small number of people had the determination to establish a U3A Group for Whitwick, Coalville and the surrounding area. That local U3A has thrived and now has a membership of over 300 retired and semi-retired people. A spokesperson said. “The team behind the organisation of the Open Morning were delighted with the response: attendance exceeded our expectations and there was a lively buzz and positive atmosphere throughout the morning. Seeing so many of our numerous and diverse Interest Groups together in one venue was amazing and gratifying.” Group Leaders had worked enthusiastically to show visitors and fellow members what their Interest Groups do by putting on attractive displays. There were photographs, slide shows and short films as well as examples of items made by the Art, Discovering Dishes, Needles & Pins and Papercraft Groups. Amongst the stalls, the popular Groups for Walking, Gardening, Juke Box Jury and Eating Out were represented along with French, Spanish and Computing. Members demonstrated skills and were eager to talk about their hobbies and the benefits they had gained from the U3A. The Fun Choir performed twice to much acclaim. During the morning members of the public were joined by representatives from Whitwick Parish Council, Councillor Barker and Chloe Mabey, the MP for North West Leicestershire, Andrew Bridgen, and Jane Pavier, the U3A Regional Trustee. The event was followed by a special Afternoon Tea for members only, including some who had joined in 2008. First-class entertainment was provided by local singer Natalie Nightingale and later a splendid celebratory cake was cut. As everyone relaxed, there was unanimous agreement that the whole day had been a very enjoyable way to mark the first ten years of Whitwick and District U3A. Proposing a toast, the Chairman declared, “You are the “U” in U3A!” The next General Meeting will be on Friday 21st September when the speaker will be Dr Wendy Frear with a presentation entitled “Ann Hely, a Crimean War Nurse”. Dr Frear leads the work of Pudding Bag Productions, a community group which uses film and other media to present historical information in an accessible way. Ann Hely of Ravenstone volunteered to become a nurse in the Crimean War. As always, the General Meeting will be held at St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 2.00pm. King Edward VII Science And Sport College Is Celebrating After Another Set Of Successful A Level Results The cohort of 103 students achieved a fantastic overall pass rate of 97%, with 65% of students gaining A*- C, 43% A*- B and 15% A*- A. This achievement is all the more impressive given the exceptional personal difficulties several of our students have experienced whilst studying for their A levels. Amongst many outstanding performers at the college is Oliver Bennett who passed an amazing five A levels at grades A* and A; he has accepted a place at Durham University to read maths and physics. We are also delighted that Harriet Wilton has just had her place confirmed at Cambridge University after securing a brilliant A* and 2 As. Other top students include Alex Reid (A*, A, B, C), and Alex Greenfield and Nathan Turner (both achieved 3 A grades). Within this exceptional Year 13 cohort, we also have two prospective medics, Eden Page and Chloe Knight, who will be reading medicine at Leeds and Exeter next year. The vast majority of students are looking forward to taking up their places at their first choice universities next year. The Principal Jenny Byrne said: "We are delighted with the achievements of our students. Once again, they have demonstrated their commitment to being the best they can be. Despite the ever increased challenge and rigour of the new reformed A levels, they have shown strong levels of resilience and determination to succeed and their efforts have been rewarded. I am always as ever grateful to the staff who have been relentless in their efforts to support the students. Never complacent, will strive to be better than yesterday to ensure the best outcomes for the young people of Coalville and the surrounding villages."

T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk One of the jobs County Councillors do for you, as taxpayers, is scrutinise the way other public bodies, such as local hospitals, spend your money. My Councillor colleagues often complain that the NHS makes too many
decisions behind closed doors. I have to admit that finding my way to the Commissioning Collaborative Board meeting last month, on the 8th floor of St John’s House in Leicester, did involve getting stuck for a while on the wrong side of a locked door that, absurdly, said ‘Welcome’. Measuring The Quality Of Healthcare It is a public meeting and anyone can go and watch how the doctors,
nurses and managers on the the three Clinical Commissioning Groups
(CCGs) make high level decisions about the way Healthcare is organised locally. There has been an updated study of deaths in hospital or soon after discharge. Entitled ‘Learning Lessons to Improve Care’, it revisits
the issues of poor care raised in a controversial Mortality Review back
in 2014. Some things are better. Some are not. I needed to see how the leaders of Leicestershire’s three CCGs would respond.
I was surprised that the only other spectators were a local journalist and
a Labour colleague from Loughborough, Stuart Brady, who I had invited myself. The new report states that, in those cases reviewed, care was
adequate or better in 84%, with 51% of care being good or excellent. Board members were concerned that 16% of patients still received
poor or very poor care. More worryingly for me, as a GP and County
Councillor, the report states that at least half of these admissions at the
end of life could have been avoided through better joined up care in the

Mary always thought she started her sessions in 1975, but thanks archive copies kept of the centre adverts, this was proven to be wrong as in one of the 1974 folders was an advert for the centre’s classes, which mention Mary. Now in her 80s, Mary says she has no intentions of ever retiring from teaching her afternoon sewing class and was overcome with the amount of people from both the present class and those of the past who turned out to say thanks. ‘Over the years I have seen lots of changes. When I started at the centre, it was to do a class called youth sewing. I had a class full of young girls, all of whom seemed to come with the transistor radios, and it was a bit hectic to put it mildly. David Fitt who was the warden there at the time, and actually lived at the centre, asked me to put on a fashion show to showcase the successes the girls had had, and from that, the idea was born to start a panto society. I was then asked to do a dressmaking class, and that has always been really successful – in fact some of the employees at the centre over the years have come to that. We have had a lot of fun, with trips out and so on for members of the classes. People coming to my classes have become my friends. Whilst I have given up my evening class, but there is no way that I will stop my afternoon class because I love it so much.’ EARAXXX- 08/2018

We Know What We Should Be Doing The Board’s extensive Action Plan states that, by October 2018, the
CCGs will ‘examine admission avoidance schemes to establish whether
criteria are suitable for very elderly and end of life patients including care coordination, hospice at home, management of acute illness and support to nursing homes.’ When challenged regarding the tight timescales, the ‘reassuring’ reply was ‘This is do-able because it is building on actions already in place’. If only that comment made sense.
The reality is we know what we should be doing. We have been
discussing Proactive, Co-ordinated Advanced and Better Care Planning (to amalgamate some of the many titles used) for the last 6 years or more. Why aren’t we doing it? Improvements at the ‘front door’ of
University Hospitals Leicester (UHL) have happened. We are also seeing
better escalation of care in rapidly deteriorating hospital patients. Cuts to social care mean that families cannot trust in community services to keep
their loved one safe at home. Improvements in secondary care only serve to pull more frail older patients into hospital. Higher barriers to social care funding make it harder to get them out again. Why Aren’t We Doing It?

The number of people in employment has increased by over 3.3 million since 2010, with almost 75% of this rise in employment is in permanent, full-time jobs, and 104,000 fewer people are on zero hours contracts. On average, over 1,000 more people are moving into employment each and every day since 2010, getting into work and gaining the dignity of providing for themselves rather than relying on benefits, which shows how the steps this Government has taken are literally “working” for people from all backgrounds and from every part of the UK. I am pleased to inform you that the unemployment rate in North West Leicestershire is only a fraction of the 4% national figure.
Our welfare reforms are also working and linked with our modern industrial strategy we are continuing to support more people into work and deliver more well-paid jobs across the country. A report out recently indicated that the bill for HS2 is heading towards £100 billion with the associated infrastructure needed to gain economic benefits being estimated at a further £43bn I have opposed HS2 for many years, voted against it at every opportunity in the Commons and was laughed at when I initially suggested the cost would be £100 billion. It is looking like that figure might actually be an underestimate. I am presently engaged with HS2 in trying to save the regeneration project in Measham which would see The Measham Wharf created, the development of 450 houses and another section of Ashby Canal reopened which would be a major regeneration project for the village and surrounding area. Whilst there is no “good” route through North West Leicestershire , the one which HS2 have come up with

In spite of this, Project Fear continues to rumble on. I’ve already spoken about unemployment and further to this our economy is continuing to grow and businesses are investing in the UK. Indeed although it has hardly reported, figures show the U.K. economy grew in the last quarter faster than the Eurozone economies and this despite all the Brexit “doom and gloom” in the media. Terms such as “crashing out” and “cliff edges”continue to be used. Take the borders issue for instance, there is the idea that if we go to the WTO model, our borders will immediately be congested with lorry drivers in queues waiting for a staff member at the border to carry out an inspection and calculate the tax or tariffs due. The truth is most of the work is done away from the border by computer exchanges. Our border with the rest of the EU is already in their terms a complex border. Goods passing need to be charged VAT, Excise needs to be levied on various items, the currency changes, and various UK domestic rules on health, safety and migrants have to imposed. Any issues with borders appear to be on the EU side ,we won’t put up a physical border in Ireland, it will be up the EU to decide if they want to and if they do then the Republic of Ireland need to take up this issue with their EU masters. The goods we export and import to the EU will be made to the same standards and be just as high quality the week after we leave, as they were the week before. Why would we put up unnecessary barriers to damage our own trade? And equally given we import more than £100bn more in goods from the EU than we sell to them, why would they?

I recently joined the Works and Pensions Secretary of State Esther McVey on a visit to the East Midlands Airport Academy which is doing a fine job in offering those who wish to reenter the job market a proven route to employment. The Airport anticipates that a further 8000 jobs will be created over the next 5 years which will do a lot to maintain and improve further our rate of employment which is currently at its highest ever level.
