NEW GARENDON PARK BOOK PUBLISHED

FREE PARKING ON FABULOUS FRIDAYS To celebrate the return of Love Loughborough’s Fabulous Fridays campaign, which aims to promote the town’s evening economy, Love Loughborough will be running their Free after Three offer - free car parking after 3pm every Friday at Granby Street car park.

Well known local historian, Michael Wortley, has published a new book about the history of Garendon Park entitled: ‘The Garendon Park of 1934. Its history, and its flora & fauna’ The main part of the book is a unique, beautifully hand written manuscript by Miss Madeline Smith dating from around 1934. Madeline was a well known schoolmistress, choir mistress and church organist in Shepshed and the manuscript is a thesis she presented whilst at teacher training college in Derby. As well as the script, there are photographs of the Park and line drawings of flowers, fishes, birds and trees. The book also includes an introduction and illustrated Smith Family History by Michael. This has a number of photographs of people and places in Shepshed, dating back as far as 1912.

Garendon Park has been at the centre of Loughborough, Shepshed and Hathern for well over a thousand years and the book will be of interest to many people in the area. Madeline died in 1979, but her memory will linger for many years to come with this interesting, nostalgic publication. To purchase the book please contact Roy Kershaw on 01509 554889 or email: roy.kershaw@ ntlworld.com. The book is priced at £12 with all profits going to the Garendon Park & Countryside Protection Group.

LOCAL SPECIALISTS URGE 'MUMPRENEURS' TO CLAIM VITAL TAX BENEFITS With more than half a million people starting their own business last year and latest research showing that almost two-thirds of mothers with children under the age of 10 are considering starting up their own business from home, Phil Marriott and Carl Whitehead who run TaxAssist Accountants in Loughborough are urging local people who work from home to ensure they claim vital tax benefits.

efficient as long as you know what you can claim. Over 70% of new businesses are now started from home and with better wireless connections and the use of smart phones and tablets, many local small businesses continue to be run from home. Knowing how to manage cash flow is essential and business owners should ensure that they benefit from any support available.”

With full-time annual childcare costs for two children now reaching £11,702, almost half of mothers surveyed by Direct Line for Business, believed they would be better off financially if they started a business from home as well as benefiting from more flexible working hours.

Carl Whitehead continued “HMRC will allow you to offset a share of some household bills to reduce the tax you pay, based on the layout of your home and the amount of time you spend there. These can include mortgage interest, insurance, rent, utility costs and rates as well as a percentage of phone line rental, the cost of business calls and expenditure on internet connections. Coupled with savings on premises and transport costs, working from home can be very effective for many small business owners.”

Phil Marriott comments “While setting up your own business can be a daunting prospect, with the cost of childcare spiralling, it can have significant benefits, offering more flexible working and the potential to be more tax

Lez Cope-Newman, BID Vice Chair, said “Free after Three is just another way we are working towards Mary Portas’s recommendations to save the High Street. We hope people will come along after picking up the kids or after work, park up for free and shop, eat or take in a show.” Councillor Stephen Hampson, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said “The Council and the BID are delighted to re-launch Fabulous Friday. TODD GROUP - LOUGHBOROUGH TODD GROUP is a new group that meets every Wednesday in Loughborough and surrounding villages for people who suffer from anxiety and depression. We offer 1to1 counselling sessions and a chance to chat and meet new friends Come join us in our Facebook group to find the dates, time and venue. www.facebook.com/groups/ TODD.Loughborough The Todd group was set up in West Midlands by our counsellor Rodger who felt the need to set up a group as he felt that there was nothing for people with depression in west Midlands. He has now moved to long Whatton but works in derby and again some of his referrals have said there is no groups in Loughborough. So Rodger decided to start the Todd Group in Loughborough, and we have meet twice and we have put something in the Echo. Rodger got over 20 phone calls in one night. He gives up his day off for 1 to 1 counselling if needed and we are aiming to get a room to meet, also to go out and about in Loughborough, with possible trips to the seaside. Anyone interested should go to the Facebook page and leave a message and also to find out where we going to meet on a weekly basis

Visitor feedback on the museum in Queen’s Park has seen the Loughborough attraction gain a new certificate to proudly display on its walls. The accolade is awarded to businesses that achieve consistently outstanding reviews, scoring four or more. One review on the site says: “Best museum in the world – ever! I love the static displays, but I love the changing displays even more! I regularly pop in just to see what’s changed.” Another reviewer added “Don’t miss this small, intimate museum, lots of local interest, with a café attached providing smashing grub at realistic prices. Loved the display on Elgar.” Councillor Stephen Hampson, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said “I am very pleased

that visitors have consistently rated our museum as ‘very good’ via TripAdvisor. This is a very special year for the Museum as we have a number of commemorative events planned that take place around the building, and this certificate is the icing on the cake. The staff at the museum work very hard to ensure visitors enjoy their visit and this is a testament to that hard work. I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to review Charnwood Museum, we will continue to work hard to bring a range of new exhibits to educate and excite.” This is the first time the Museum has been awarded a certificate from the travel site, in December 2013 the museum was also crowned Small Visitor Attraction of the Year in the Leicester and Leicestershire Excellence in Tourism Awards. Around 4,000 residents in the town will receive postcards in the Outwoods Edge and Dishley areas before doorstep visits begin in July. People will be asked about their travel patterns and given information and advice about alternative travel options, such as walking, cycling and public transport.

Sponsor your child for each good deed and help us to support the children at Rainbows. Order your pack online at www.rainbows.co.uk/do20

Youngsters can support children and young people at Rainbows Hospice by taking on 20 good deeds this summer holidays. Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has launched its Do 20 for 20 campaign to coincide with its 20th birthday celebrations this year. Throughout the summer, children are encouraged to raise vital funds by doing 20 good deeds in return for a donation from their family. Every time a good deed is carried out, a sticker is earned for children to complete a challenge sticker sheet. Katie Baxter, community and events manager at Rainbows, said“This is a great way for youngsters to get involved and support Rainbows, as well as helping out at home and keeping entertained over the summer.

There are lots of things they could do such as going without something, cleaning, selling things or gardening or they may have plenty of their own ideas.” “People can donate whatever they think the deed is worth and everything raised goes towards supporting the work of the hospice, which is the only hospice for children and young people with terminal and life-limiting illnesses in the East Midlands. Raising £10 would pay for an hour’s worth of care, £20 would fund one hour of physiotherapy and an hour of external bereavement support would cost £50. It would be great to have the support of youngsters in the area, especially in what is such an important year for us.” To get involved, call 0800 952113, email fundraising@rainbows.co.uk or visit www.rainbows.co.uk/do20

A range of offers from Kinchbus will be available as part of the survey as an incentive to try the bus, including: £4 travel for four people (single or return journey) on any kinchbus service in Loughborough or Leicester £2 off any 10 trip Kinchkard £5 off any 28 day Kinchkard Peter Osborne, cabinet member for transport, said “Encouraging people to use Loughborough’s excellent cycling and bus links for short journeys, instead of using their cars, will cut congestion and pollution and help people’s health.” The survey is part of the council’s choose how you move campaign – for further details, see www.leics.gov.uk/choosehowyoumove

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Loughborough & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Carillon Bird Table

Talking about art work I spotted this unusual bird table outside the flats on Freehold Street, I do not suppose it was unveiled with any ceremony but it is still a great effort and very ingenious. The real thing is also a bird table for the pigeons that occupy the balcony and cupola at the top. What we need is a Pied Piper of pigeons to lure them away, perhaps to Freehold Street? If you know of any other models or pictures of the carillon or indeed anything else we could include in the July Edition of the Carillon Chimes then please email me at: carillonmuseum@gmail.com

Rutland Remembers

Rutland Remembers the county’s 600 fallen in the First World War with the launch of a new website and they are keen for members of the public to add information about the fallen. A spokesman said, “This site is dedicated to the men - and three women - from England’s smallest County who served and died in the First World War. With the help of our users, our aim is to learn more about their lives and to visit their graves and memorials wherever they may be” Read more by visiting: www.rutlandremembers.org

What’s New At The Museum This Month

Handling Pack, responding to a number of requests to borrow items we have produced a ‘Handling Pack’ for organisations to borrow and already it has been used on a number of occasions and the booking sheet is filling up as schools and other organisations have booked it for lessons and displays. The pack contains a number of WW1 items and some briefing notes with details of each of the items and we are hoping to include more items in the near future. If you want to borrow the pack for a presentation or display it is being stored at Charnwood Museum for easy access and you will need to book it.

New Uniform, for many years the mannequin on the ground floor was dressed in an officers service dress uniform as worn today. It was looking a little tired and needed cleaning so we appealed for a set of modern day Combat 95 Desert Pattern jacket and trousers. No sooner than had we dressed the mannequin in the new uniform than the British Army decided to change into MTP (Multi Terrain Pattern). Designed to blend in with a range of environments, woodland, jungle, grassland and arid stone. We have now been given a set of MTP, However we put it down in the office and are having difficulty finding it? Once we do we will bring the mannequin up to date. (Sue of Brighton, please note the bit about not being able to find it is a joke)

Leics & Rutland Heritage Forum Exhibition Each year the small independent museums belonging to the Leicestershire & Rutland Heritage Forum are invited to showcase their museum’s collection at Snibston Discovery Museum. Space is limited (about shoe box size) and our display this year focuses on a single Loughborough soldier who fell in the Great War, Pte Thomas Marshall. Thomas served with the 6th Bn Leicestershire Regiment, he was the son of Albert & Sarah Ann and lived with them at 4 Albert Place. He Died on 8th October 1915 aged just 20. He is buried in the Churchyard Extension in the village of Berles au Bois and commemorated on the Loughborough Carillon, and in the Emmanuel Church Loughborough.

The Leicester’s’ War Diary records, ‘6.15pm Battalion relieved in the trenches by 8th Bn Leicestershire Regt and returned to billets at Berles au Bois for the night 8/9th Oct. casualties 8th Oct. 1 man killed, Lt M C Hill wounded in knee by rifle bullet late in the evening.’ The Loughborough Echo, reported: ‘News has been received from the front of the death whilst in action of Private Tom Marshall, 6th Leicester’s’ and Private J Ireland, 2nd Leicester’s, both Loughborough lads and associated with the Church Lads Brigade’. We have no photograph of Thomas, do you know of any surviving family members?

The Small display at Snibston telling Thomas’s story and showing his medals, ID discs, cap badge, photos of his grave, the cemetery at Berles au Bois and framed photos of the village circa 1915.

The Carillon Book Launch Not only did we sell 34 copies of the book but engaged with dozens of people about the museum and I am sure raised awareness of who we are and what we do. Not bought a copy yet? They are available at the Carillon, open every afternoon except Monday 1.00pm till 4.30pm.

CARILLON TOWER & WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM 01509 263370 - www.loughborough-rollofhonour.com - carillonmuseum@gmail.com

The WW1 Roadshows

A Small Project For You?

We teamed up with Charnwood Museum and the Library Service and set up shop in a number of local libraries, Loughborough, Birstall, Shepshed and Syston. People were invited to bring along any objects, photographs and documents they may have had from WW1, both military and civilian. The items brought in were, discussed, photographed and recorded and the owners invited to display the items in one of two exhibitions in August, either at Charnwood Museum or at our exhibition in Loughborough Library.

Stolen Medals A New Website

We had a great time and heard a lot of very interesting stories, we also took along a few objects from our own collection to provide some talking points. A gentleman who I only know as Kevin has set up a new website listing lost and stolen medals, he explains “Over the years some museums have been targeted by thieves with medals being the most common item stolen, in some cases the medals are recovered but in other cases they are forgotten like Bruce Castle Museum that had 300 medals to the Middlesex Regiment stolen in 1977. Over the past five years I have put together a website for medal enthusiasts as well as helping families, Police, Museums and collectors. I consider the most important part of the site is the listing of lost & stolen medals this could be Military medals, Olympic medals, Police medals, Nursing medals, Fire Service medals just to name a few. The Lost or Stolen web page has nearly 700 medals listed as lost or stolen, please have a look http://goo.gl/KWeUMF you will see a number of museums listed on the site with medals stolen.”

This is something we will we will have to give some thought as to when we do it again. The photos show volunteers Marigold, Adam & Mel with some of the members of public who brought along items.

Green Tiger Magazine We made it onto the pages of the Green Tiger, the newsletter of the Royal Leicestershire Regimental Association, not once but twice! They used the story about the WW1 bible being returned to a church in Suffolk, the church will be using the bible in a display they have planned before they pass it on to a member of the soldier’s surviving family. The bibles were originally found in a storeroom being used by the association, each has the man’s number rank and name in the front, they were passed to us and we are researching each in turn with the

intention of returning them to the men’s families. Watch out for the Loughborough Echo, they are to appeal for information about one of the bibles, the recipient was a Loughborough man, we just need one of his family to come forward. The newsletter has also published an advert for volunteers at our museum. The Green Tiger goes out free of charge to all the members of the Royal Leicester’s’ Association and there is normally a copy in the museum if you want to pop in and read it.

We have a small collection of Regimental Car Badges, tucked away in a display cabinet in the Yeomanry Room. It struck me that they are quite attractive and deserve a more prominent position in the museum so that they can be appreciated more. However rather than do it ourselves I thought it might be an idea if we invited someone other than one of our volunteers to do the job. A simple project; a length of wood, painted and the badges fixed to it, a single vertical display fixed to the wall. This is an opportunity for you to get involved and to contribute something that will be on display for years to come. First person to contact me gets the job: carillonmuseum@gmail.com

GARDENING

S

ummer is here at long last and thoughts turn towards holidays and breaks from the hectic lifestyle. Spending time with friends in the garden, lighting the BBQ and grabbing a beer or two is high on the agenda, so during the sunniest months it’s good to have a break from the gardening chores. So this month I take a look at choosing plants that are low maintenance. By being selective, choosing plants that require little deadheading, trimming and staking, it’s possible to create a space that looks good without much TLC.

EVERGREENS

There are a several garden-worthy shrubs that look good throughout the year without the need for intensive maintenance. Hebes are number one on the list of must haves. There are plenty to choose from depending on your style. I favour Hebe ‘Sutherlandii’ for use as a soft rounded alternative to topiary, with the added benefit of white flowers. For a brighter splash of flower colour H. ‘Purple Shamrock’, H. ‘Midsummer Beauty’ and H. ‘Nicolas Blush’ will bloom well during summer. Larger varieties may need an occasional trim to keep them in a tidy shape, but that’s all. Lavender is a British favourite for a good reason long lasting blooms, scented foliage and tidy grey-green foliage. English varieties are the hardiest where as the French varieties with the ‘butterfly tops’ will thrive best in sheltered spots. They only require a trim immediately after flowering to stop them going woody and keep them in a good shape. They suit borders and containers with well-drained soil/compost. Lavender ‘Hidcote’ and ‘Munstead’ are compact varieties ideal for hedges. Choisya are very useful in gardens to creating a rounded bush with attractive glossy foliage. They bear fragrant white flowers in May-June on well behaved plants. These rarely need any care, so are ideal for low maintenance areas. They’re best in a sunny border away from cold winds. C. ‘White Dazzler’ is worth seeking out.

FOR A SPLASH OF COLOUR Perennial Geraniums such as the much loved G. ‘Johnson’s Blue’ and the new G. ‘Rozanne’ will give colour to the borders for months at a time. If they stop flowering simple give them a hard trim down to the ground and a feed with a liquid fertiliser and they will be up and flowering in a few weeks. Penstemons are valuable for late summer colour. In a sunny sheltered spot with well-drained soil, they will happily establish and give a vibrant display for months. Their bushy habit means they don’t need staking just a light deadhead every couple of weeks to prolong the flowering. I favour the old hardier varieties such as P. ‘Hewells Pink’ and P. ‘Garnet’ which have elegant blooms.

Geraniums

Fuchsias are hard working plants able to flower all summer long. They are available in a huge colour range and there are trailers for window boxes or bushes for pots and borders. They will happily flower nonstop in a lightly shaded spot with moist soil. Heucheras are now available in a rainbow of colours. Most are grown for their vibrant semi-evergreen foliage but there is also a range with stunning flowers too look out for the plants named after cities e.g. Hollywood which is a favourite of mine. These all require little TLC and will look good pretty much all year around. Try them in pots and borders. With the pots and borders now planted they will require watering until they establish, especially as the weather warms up, so next month I’ll be looking at the best irrigation methods for the garden and which fertilisers to choose to make the most of your plants.

ARE YOU PLANNING A LOW MAINTENANCE GARDEN ON A TIGHT BUDGET? I am donating approx. 3 tons of 20mm golden gravel (worth app. £180) to a local home/school in need. It’s ideal for covering membrane for a weed free garden. It is loose so will need bagging up by the collector and removing from site in Shepshed. The full quantity must be taken & by the 27thJuly. N.B the collector will need their own suitable bags and vehicle to move this heavy load! Get in touch asap if interested. If you need help to make your garden low maintenance or you are looking for design ideas, a Consultation or Planting Plan may be just what you need. Take a look at my website for details of the services I offer www.belgrierson.co.uk or call me on 07506 750250.

CUTTING THE GRASS AND MORE

A

ll layers of government have been reducing expenditure since 2010 to try to make the books balance we’re still running at a deficit nationally, and will do so for a few years to come, so we’re having to be ever more creative with how we do things, and in some instances, be upfront about what we can’t afford to do any more. Charnwood hasn’t been immune to a reduction in its income about a third comes from central government grants (which are getting smaller each year), with the remaining two thirds from Business rates (which are set nationally) and Council Tax, which is set locally. Charnwood Council hasn’t raised the Council Tax for 4 years family budgets still haven’t recovered from the 2008/09 economic collapse and Charnwood has no intention of making them any worse but it has meant that the Council has had to find ways to function on less money. Charnwood has been fortunate in that it started to reduce its expenditure in 2007, before the national economic collapse that foresight meant that it already had a plan in place, and over the past 7 years, has saved millions of pounds, whilst keeping frontline services intact, and in many cases improving them. During a period of reduced expenditure, Charnwood has seen its levels of customer satisfaction improve in many key areas, such as refuse collection and street cleaning. A remarkable achievement especially given that the Council has managed to balance its books each year, with money still available to invest in the town. The works to create the Inner Relief Road and town centre pedestrianisation have, for instance, been supported by the Borough Council, with additional money spent of improving the market, car parks, homes and infrastructure. Which brings us to cutting the grass. Most verges in the town are

the responsibility of the County Council, not the Borough a quirk of having two Councils, when most people would imagine one would suffice for simple tasks however, the County Council’s savings plan requires it to review every service and detail, and where those have a direct impact on our Town’s residents, the Borough Council will need to consider where and what it can do to mitigate the changes required. What is becoming very clear is that many more services need to be shared between Councils, both structurally and geographically, and there may come a point when we need to discuss honestly the need for the tier of government between our Borough and Westminster, or whether Charnwood would be better served by working more closely with neighbouring authorities to provide better services at a lower cost. Whatever the outcome, it’s clear that the grass, as well waste, will still need to be cut, and Councils must balance their budgets, whilst still providing the best services to residents.

PROTECTING YOUR VOTE

T

here are some important changes underway across the country to make electoral fraud much harder, and to make your vote count more fairly. As of this month, anyone moving into Charnwood will be asked additional questions when they register to vote, to ensure that they are who they claim to be. Those applying will be required to provide their date of birth, address, and National Insurance number these will be checked against national records, and if there isn’t a match, the applicant will be required to satisfy additional questions and checks before being added to the electoral register. Existing voters will not have to undergo similar individual checks until after May 2015, and will not lose their vote in the meantime

Owner of RENAISSANCE, Dawn Baker, was born in Park Road, Coalville. She is a very busy wife and mum and an active member of Christ Church on London Road. Dawn and her staff raise money for many local charities with their fashion shows. Dawn started her business as a dress agency some 3 years ago and moved into Belvoir Road in August 2013 as the business needed to be extended. This was due to needing more room for the new mothers of the bride and groom department in order to house all the new outfits and accessories which has continued to grow. The boutique has been extended again recently to accommodate space for all the new daywear ranges she now stocks. Renaissance offers that personal touch to each and every individual that visits the boutique. You can call Dawn on 01530 836301 or e-mal dawn@renaissance-boutique.com alternatively visit her website www.renaissancedressagency.com Dawn would like to say ‘thank you’ to a few special people who have helped to create RENAISSANCE BOUTIQUE, firstly husband David, for believing in her and her dream to own her very own shop, Mike Ward - for naming that dream shop, all her close friends and family, friends for their continuous support.

letters will be sent to all registered voters over the summer to explain the current system in more detail, and how it will fully change after May 2015. However, the aim is to stop names being ‘bulk’ registered, to reduce the risk of hard-to-spot fake voters appearing on the register – a crime that has changed the results of some elections in some areas in the past.

There will be an extensive publicity campaign over the summer to outline the changes, and you will receive additional information by post but if in doubt, please do contact Charnwood Council, or look at its website for more information; Charnwood.gov.uk

arlier this month I attended the launch event of the Loughborough Ladies Business Group. The event was held at the terrific Brown’s Lane restaurant in the town. What an amazing collection of inspiration women involved in a whole variety of businesses. I think everyone had a great time and it showed just how important this sort of networking opportunity is to build contacts and share ideas.

inspirational. It is so important that we encourage more young people into science, engineering and technology careers. It was particularly encouraging to see as many girls taking part as boys.

As Minister for Women I recently launched a £1million Government fund designed to help more women starting up or growing their businesses to make the most of the opportunities offered by the internet. There are thousands of women running some amazing small businesses all over the UK but they still make up just a fifth of all small businesses.

I have also met Kinchbus to discuss changes to the local bus routes following the successful campaign for the pedestrianisation trial in Loughborough town centre and I met with the Area Manager for the Environment Agency to discuss flooding and environmental issues locally.

This fund will give women the practical help needed to get their businesses online and take advantage of superfast broadband. This will include online mentors, business clubs and training courses so that women all over the country can benefit. Bids can be made via the local broadband projects rolling out superfast broadband such as the Leicestershire County Council scheme. I really hope local female-led businesses will apply. In late May I was absolutely delighted to attend the 2014 Young Innovators Challenge awards evening organised by 3M and the Loughborough Echo. Seeing the finished projects and hearing about the hard work which had gone into submitting entries was

I also attended this year’s Celebration Evening at Twenty Twenty in Loughborough it was so brilliant to hear about achievements of the Twenty Twenty participants.

I am looking forward to welcome Year 6 pupils from two more local primary schools to Westminster this month Boothwood and St Bartholomew’s Quorn. I have already had my grilling from the pupils at St Bartholomew’s. They asked some excellent questions and I think there are some future replacements for Jeremy Paxman amongst them! The children at the Beacon Academy also asked some searching questions when I visited them a little earlier this month. Finally I wanted to congratulate the organisers and all participants at this year’s Picnic in the Park. It was a really splendid event colourful, thought-provoking and entertaining. It was great to see the event, and Loughborough town centre, so busy that afternoon.

ANTHONY NOLAN AND NICKY MORGAN ON THE HUNT FOR SELFLESS SUPERHEROES TO SAVE LIVES

The charity Anthony Nolan is searching for more local heroes in Loughborough to join their bone marrow register in the fight against blood cancer. Championed by local MP Nicky Morgan this search is underway as the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register has been mapped across the UK by local area for the first time. The charity has revealed today that, in Loughborough, there are more than 1053 selfless people willing to donate their stem cells, or bone marrow, to save the life of a stranger. More than 525,000 people are currently on the Anthony Nolan register and the average per constituency is 796. Anthony Nolan, now in its 40th anniversary year, was the world’s first bone marrow register. The blood cancer charity has been saving lives for four decades by matching remarkable people willing to donate their bone marrow to patients in desperate need of a transplant. Two thirds of UK patients will not find a matching donor from within their

families; instead they turn to Anthony Nolan to find them an unrelated donor. But the charity can currently only find a match for around half of those who to come to them in desperate need, and they still urgently need more people to come forward. Local MP, Nicky Morgan has joined the fight against blood cancer by sharing their superhero selfie for Anthony Nolan to show their support and champion the register in their community. Nicky commented“There are 1053 heroes in Loughborough alone on the register, which is a wonderful figure. However, I’m hunting for more people to sign up today so we can fight blood cancer together. For somebody to give a stranger a second chance at life is truly heroic. I’m proud to champion this cause to my constituents.” To find out more information, or to start your application to join the register, please visit the Anthony Nolan register at: www.anthonynolan.org/

MP NICKY MORGAN ENCOURAGES CONSTITUENTS TO LOCATE THEIR LONG LOST PENSIONS Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan is encouraging constituents to use the Government’s free pension Tracing Service to locate their lost pension funds. In the past year alone, 145,000 people have used the service to locate their long forgotten pensions, which is more than double the number who used the service in 2010. Now Nicky is encouraging constituents to join the growing number of people who are making the most of the Service. It is estimated that there will be 50 million dormant and lost pension pots by 2050. Nicky commented “I would urge residents who believe they have a lost pension fund to get in touch. The average person in Loughborough will have 11 jobs in their lifetime, which means there a lot of long forgotten pensions out there. This Service is free, so why not give it a go!” The Pension Tracing Service website can be accessed at www.gov.uk/find-lost-pension or by calling 0845 600 2537 (textphone 0845 300 0169). Lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Natural Health Holiday Hints

Love Your Feet! Thickened Nails

Submitted by Ken Teppin M.C.P.H Summer is here and many of us are looking forward to our holidays. In today’s hectic world we seem to depend more on having a good break than ever before. So what I would like to offer this month are some tips to help prepare and cope with potential problems. Firstly, regular readers of these articles will know of my three first aid tips. Arnica for any falls, knocks or any trauma resulting in bruising or bumps. Rescue Remedy for any shock to the system that results in upset or tears. Finally Aloe Vera Gelly for cuts, bites scratches and obviously, sunburn. A common problem when away from home is upset stomachs and digestive problems. The two main reasons for this tend to be food poisoning or over indulgence. Food poisoning is quite usual when having to cope with different food and drink. Our digestive enzymes are mainly used to our normal diet and, so consider other foods as toxic although local people can eat them with impunity. The homeopathic remedy Arsenicum 30 will often help. The sufferer will be cold, anxious and even tearful. They will have cramping pains in the stomach and also watery discharge. Also they will have marked weakness and fastidiousness. Over indulgence is something that we all can succumb to on holiday. We have more time to relax and tend to treat ourselves to extras that we normally avoid. Thus we end up the next

Submitted by Sally Prytherch Hinds Feet Foot Care T: 07806786616 E: hindsfeetfootcare@gmail.com W: www.hindsfeetfootcare.co.uk day feeling bloated, nauseous and hung-over. The remedy suggested is Nux Vom 30. The indications for this are: the patient feels worse for being cold, or exertion. They will be quarrelsome, irritable and hypersensitive. Of course I am not advocating over indulgence and then just take Nux Vom, but we all like to party sometimes. A couple of other first aid remedies are Apis 30 which is helpful for stings and severe reactions to stings and Nat Mur Tissue Salts for prickly heat. Finally I would like to talk about exposure to the sun or getting a tan, although I feel we should be cautious about over exposure and more importantly, quick extreme blasts of sunbathing. Some of the current advice about covering up all skin all of the time is a bit O.T.T. Why not spend some more time out of doors in the weeks building up to your holidays? Acclimatize yourself gradually, go for walks, and play outside with the children. Spend time sitting outside when you can. Little and gradual is a good maxim. When outdoors use a good quality protective cream. It just remains for me to wish you all a good summer and have a great time if you are going away on holiday. Good natural health!

Thickened toe nails are often caused by increased pressure on the nail, and can be an occupational hazard for footballers, dancers and anyone wearing heavy duty footwear. Trauma to the nail, fungal infection and conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, poor circulation and diabetes may also be contributory factors, although often it just part of the normal aging process. Discomfort and pain due to increased pressure on the nail bed can be a significant problem, as can embarrassment about how the nails looks contributing to low self esteem for some people. Nails can become white, yellow, red or black in colour. A red or black nail may have dried blood underneath the nail plate due

to injury, but it is important to check with a GP as a black, dark or striped nail not caused by trauma, and which is not growing out could be due to melanoma ( a type of cancer). Identification and eradication of the cause is important where possible, and correct sized footwear can help with comfort. Soaking the feet to soften nails and regular filing to reduce the nail will promote comfort. Where nails are difficult to cut in the normal way careful filing by a professional using a drill and bur (file) may be required. USEFUL WEBSITES:

WHAT DOES YOUR OPTICIAN SEE IN YOUR EYES? Submitted by Bonita Irish Hallcroft Opticians T: 01509 650666 E: info@hallcroftopticians.co.uk W: www.hallcroftopticians.co.uk Retinal photography and its uses During an eye examination, an Optometrist (Ophthalmic Optician) routinely studies the interior of your eye, looking for any sign of abnormalities. We are able to actually photograph the interior of your eyes (specifically the retina), meaning that we can study your eyes in far more detail. By keeping photographic records of your retina, we are also able to compare images year on year, which is extremely useful. We call this procedure retinal screening and it enables us to check for Glaucoma, Diabetes, Cataract, Age related macular degeneration (AMD) and other ailments that affect literally hundreds of thousands of people in the UK.

Retinal screening is extremely comfortable and simply involves you resting your chin and forehead on pads whilst we take the photographs. At no stage do we actually touch your eye. A typical photograph of a healthy retina is shown below. We believe this screening process to be a significant advancement in the early detection of eye disorders and, like any disorder in the human body, the sooner it is detected, the more that can be done to cure and/or slow down the deterioration process. We now offer the option of retinal screening as part of our eye examination and, although we make a small additional charge for this service, it is something we strongly recommend.

KIDS ZONE

SPORTS DAY ! The weather had been sunny for the last few weeks so Daniel and his friends had decided to organise a small picnic and sports day at one of their favourite parks. Christie was bringing some sandwiches and muffins, Bethany was flying in with some fresh lemonade for them and Daniel had packed a bag full of bits and bobs for the races, but he wouldn’t tell anyone what the races were! On the day of the picnic the friends met up in the park and Daniel started unpacking the bag… “Here we go” said Daniel as he started to remove the items one by one… “Three small bags half full of rice? What are we supposed to do with those?” said Bethany. Daniel carried on… “Old clothes?” said Christie, it looks like you forgot to take that bag to the charity shop! Daniel didn’t say a word but kept unpacking… “You packed Welly’s Daniel?” said Bethany, “But it’s not going to rain today and you haven’t even packed enough for all of us!” “I’m not sure about this sports day?” said Christie, you’ve packed some very odd items Daniel! Daniel started laughing! “You need to use your imagination a bit more, these items are perfect for our races!”

Last Months Competition Winners Well done to James Pett winning the kids competition and Barry Partridge winning the adults competition. Your prizes are on their way!

Daniel started to put the clothes down on the ground, first three big pairs of socks in a row, a few meters later, three baggy t-shirts and a few meters after that three of Bethany’s old hats! “All you have to do is start at the socks, when I shout ‘go’ we put the socks on, run or fly to the t-shirt, put that on quickly then run or fly to the hat, put that on and then on to the finish line!” said Daniel. “Oh that sounds like fun” shouted Christie, let’s do that first. So the friends lined up and Daniel shouted “go!” they rushed putting their socks on, Christie was in such a rush she didn’t pull them up properly and tripped over on her way to the T-shirts, Daniel got his T-shirt on but backwards and they all rushed on to the hat’s laughing as they went! Bethany grabbed her hat and put it on, but it slipped over her eyes and she started flying the wrong way! Eventually they all crossed the finish line and were rolling around on the floor laughing at Bethany who had flown in circles trying to see out from under her hat! They carried on doing more competations, Welly Wanging with the three wellies and a race balancing the rice bags on their heads! After the competitions they all sat down for the picnic and decided that they had all done as well as each other. Playing with your friends is fun and you can use almost any items to design your own races! Why don’t you have a go?

A man walks into a doctor’s office. He has a cucumber up his nose, a carrot in his left ear and a banana in his right ear. “What’s the matter with me?” he asks the doctor. The doctor replies, “You’re not eating properly.” Q: Did you hear about the fight in the biscuit tin? A: The bandit hit the penguin over the head with a club, tied him to a wagon wheel with a blue ribbon and made his breakaway in a taxi! 2 bags of crisps are walking done the road, a policeman pulls up beside them and asks “do you want a lift?”, they both reply “sorry mate, were walkers!!”

QUICK CRAFT

Tell you a tale of Leicestershire, the county where I live. And of the myriad delights that fair shire has to give.

PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS

The lush green of her rolling hills. Sleepy hamlets of red brick.

Need cheering up? Then Leicestershire will surely do the trick. From Charnwood Forest’s rocky heights the view is panoramic. The fresh, green growth in springtime, it really is dynamic.

Just take a walk in Bradgate Park. History’s all around you.

My home county’s turbulent past. It really will astound you. Go see Bosworth battlefield where King Richard lost his life.

YOU WILL NEED:

• Fresh, whole white or Portobello mushrooms • White paper • Drinking glass • Non-aerosol hair spray

Offered his kingdom for a horse in the midst of all that strife. Visit Melton Mowbray. I really think you oughter.

Stilton cheese and crisp pork pies. Your mouth is sure to water.

HOW YOU DO IT:

1. To make spore prints, carefully remove the stems from the mushrooms. Expose the gills by using a knife (a parent’s job) to trim back the lower edges of the caps. 2. Place the mushrooms on a sheet of paper and cover each one with an inverted glass. Let stand overnight. The mushrooms will release spores from their caps to create distinctive patterns. 3. Carefully lift first the glasses, then the mushrooms, to reveal the spore prints. If you are careful not to smudge them you can try adding faces to make some mushroom people! 4. To preserve the designs, coat with non-aerosol hair spray.

Look east from top of Beacon Hill on a beautiful summer’s day.

That silvery thread is the River Soar meandering her leisurely way.

Hear the chimes of the Loughborough carillon, borne on a gentle breeze. Explore the new National Forest. They are planting millions of trees. Down in the south of the county, Foxton locks is wonderful sight. A staircase of ten mighty lock gates, all in a single flight. So come on and visit my county. It will not disappoint.

INGREDIENTS • 100g softened butter • 100g caster sugar • 1 egg • Drop of vanilla essence • 225g plain flour • 3-4 tbsp of jam / curd METHOD Cream butter and sugar together. Add the egg and vanilla before mixing until smooth. Combine the flour to form a smooth dough. If the dough is too sticky add a little more flour. Wrap the dough in cling film. Chill for 1hr.

Heat oven to 180 degrees. Roll out the chilled dough, on a floured surface, until it is about 5mm thick. Using a cookie cutter cut out about 40 biscuit shapes. Cut out a small hole in half of the biscuit shapes. Place the shapes on lined baking trays and bake for 10-15 mins, or until golden brown, then remove and leave to cool on a wire rack. Take a pair of biscuits and put ½ tsp of jam on the whole biscuit, the place the holey biscuit on top. Enjoy!
